The road to Chimney Rock is gone - Hurricane Helene aftermath

- A lot of people have been asking how they can help. Here's what I've seen from today (October 1st):
I think the area is starting to get saturated with very legitimate help. I'm not sure how many more hands on deck are needed but I could be wrong. Water is the obvious thing needed since water systems have been compromised/contaminated so if you can find a reputable organization to donate to for water and food, that's a good idea. I was in Swannanoa this morning - they were hit HARD. The river swept through there killing people, reducing homes to rubble, and destroying businesses. I saw random people there just setting up tents with water, food, coffee, snacks. I think that's a great idea as people are in clean up mode, exhausted, sad and they need these things - they can't get these items anyway because maybe their car was crushed, their road is washed out, power is out so grocery stores are closed, etc. People need fuel for their generators (lines are hours long at the stations that are open).
There are communities stuck on top of mountains due to their only line of access being completely destroyed with no hope of it being fixed anytime soon. They're requiring air drops and rescues and these guys seem to be doing a good job if you'd like to donate - Aerial Recovery Group (links below).
I hiked about 6 miles into Bat Cave today heading towards Chimney Rock. I'm not sure what they need because it's gone but like everywhere, they need food, water, gas. I'm hopeful that this whole community evacuated as there is just zero access to Chimney Rock/Lake Lure from the NW anymore. Downstream to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, it's just a mess. I haven't physically seen it because I couldn't get there but I've seen videos. The clean up is going to be enormous. I do know that helicopters are heavily flying here due to no access so once again, Aerial Recovery and other organizations actively flying there need help (they're actually flying to MANY mountaintops within a couple hours).
Wellness checks in the region are a good idea. A friend sent me www.unitedway.... as a way to sign up to do wellness checks if you're local. I'm not sure how that organization works but it's an idea. You can also look in forums and see people asking about specific addresses.
Crazy thing is, this is just a few communities. Asheville, Hendersonville, Burnsville, this whole region, needs assistance. People are coming to help in big ways now, though. I met a group down in the river today from Myrtle Beach, a search and rescue team. I talked with some Cajun Navy people on side by sides today. The more the merrier.

Thank so very much for doing this update. I live in Hendersonville and feel blessed because all I lost was power water and cell service. No harm to me or my neighbors. As I drove into Flat Rock all I saw was devastation. Trees power lines and power poles all decimated. I love Chimney Rock Lake Lure and Black Mountain. The reality is so much worse than even pictures and video show. Stay strong. Stay safe. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This video captures the extent of the destruction better than any news coverage I've seen.
News isn't trying to show you. They are being "light" with it. They haven't shown you entire valleys scoured clean of factories and towns. Entire towns have been erased.
That's sad, but I completely agree. You need a pedestrian's view to be able to wrap your head around it.
I think the area must just be too inaccessible or unsafe for a news crew, either that or there are more urgent needs.

I feel guilty “liking” the video as there is nothing to like about this situation at all but Mark does an outstanding job showing before, after and extent of damage while remaining calm AND on the move to help. He’s like a guardian angel. Living in Michigan we visit western Carolinas every October and it breaks my heart what you are all going through thru. Liking a video doesn't necessarily mean you appreciate the context of what happened. To me, liking it means you appreciate the coverage of it.

My husband and I honeymooned in Ashville, and we were back just 3 years ago with our daughter to hike up Chimney Rock. We didn't have time on that trip to stop in the town of Chimney Rock, but I remember thinking, we'll come back some day and do that . . .
I felt the same way! It breaks my heart to see such destruction in the county I live in! And my husband and I were just through Chimney Rock and Lake Lure the Sunday before this happened. 😢😢

The extremely crushed and almost round car in the river, unbelievable! You captured major astounding footage and I want to thank you for showing this even if very painful to watch.

Or it was someone's car swept away from their house or something with no one in it. The water was very high and raging according to videos out there so this could have floated. I don't want to think the car was there on that street that used to be there.... The weather was pretty bad for anybody to be driving through there.
I have never seen a car that had been rolled down a river like that and rounded off like the river boulders. That was a lot of water flow.
HWY 9 was my road into the mountains. I live on the coast and this is far worse than what we have experienced in the past 15 years. Thanks for showing this.
I've driven this road so many times between Black Mountain and Bat Cave. It was such a scenic and twisty route. My heart aches for the people who live there.

I’m in Madison county NC and even seeing it in person for days it’s impossible for the human mind to comprehend the absolute totality of destruction and its true scale… it’s simply not possible to understand. With extreme category 5 hurricanes on the coast there’s evidence of where things once stood, that’s not the case here. It’s like nothing was ever in these places. Nature has reclaimed the land entirely and fully.

"Were taking things into our own hands" You must, you can't rely on government to save you. We live in a rural area like you. We are remote and the last to be snow plowed, last for the power trucks and tree cutters. Being prepared is a way of life. Having the tools and supplies to keep you and your family and neighbors safe and well during a disaster is very important. Everyone on our road stocks fuel, food and firearms as well as saws, trucks, tractors, atvs and skimobiles etc. In 20 years we have used them all. We take things into our own hands. Its a colonial way of life when people got together for the common good.
In a disaster such as this, I’m glad your community is self sufficient. It’s going to take a long time to clear and fix the roads.
Hey that’s great but what about if your house and all your supplies gets washed away and destroyed as seen in this video. Your story is nonsense. All these people had pantries of food too. It can happen to anyone. This isn’t a time to say your prepared and they weren’t.

Send them to jail for breaking what law? I have seen first hand the devistation of a Tornado i Florida several years ago. The Government showed up in a motor home with paper work for residents to fill out. Meanwhile residents don't have a place to live, Medication, food. The Southern Babtists roll in with chainsaws, prepared hot meals, helped people contact relatives. It all comes down to people helping people. @Chakawookfound
The level of devastation here, there's no way the local individuals can do anything but triage. If Asheville and the surrounding areas are to be rebuilt, it's going to require the power of all of us. That power is called government.
Chimney Rock was such a happy little village, many times we would take our children down to the creek behind the shops, and Wade around the big boulders and the little bridge, it was an idyllic spot, and will be part of their childhood memories. So sad to see it gone.
Were there large boulders behind those shops, then a small bridge to a park or something nearby that you had to pay to cross and enter while on foot.
The boulders and river remain, the roads and buildings will be rebuilt.

I've been fishing the Rocky Broad river for almost 20 years. I took my grandson to Chimney Rock when he was months old. Been taking him when ever I can. He's 10 now. I showed him a video of what it is now. I can't imagine how you must feel about your community and the loss you have taken. Thank you for the great video and I am praying for you all. I'm in the Triad (no damage, just heavy rain and up to 40 mpg winds) and have been in tears more than not since it happened. Only a cold and heartless person could look at this and not feel sorrow. 💔
I'm from eastern NC, this gave me terrible flashbacks of past hurricanes we had when many roads were washed out and towns became submerged. This is even more heartbreaking since western NC was/is not prepared for a storm like this.

We just visited in July for the 4th and we fell in love with Chimney Rock, Bat Cave, Lake Lure. It’s so heartbreaking that the beautiful area is gone now. So sorry to hear about your home and neighborhood. You and everyone will be in our thoughts and prayers.

This level of devastation is just completely mind-blowing. Thank you so much for providing this documentation and footage. I'm sure it will take quite some time for this mess to get cleaned up. Patience and godspeed with all of you.
If the clean up after Irene in Vermont (2011) can be some guidance many roads had to be rebuilt completely from the new riverbed up by 5 feet for miles then add the road bed, and then layers required to pave. Power lines needed new poles along those routes that were washed out, that was another long arduous issue. Several of the cut off communities had to rely of supplies being brought in by helicopter or volunteers with 4 wheelers on back woods trails. Many areas had to resort to single lane traffic for several months. The roads will take several months to rebuild there and the area of destruction is much larger than Vermont's was. Hopefully the area does not have any more significant rain fall for a few months so the work can proceed quickly without more damage. But depending on the number of miles of roads that need to be rebuilt the more isolated areas may have a bit of a wait for enough construction equipment to arrive. We were lucky that several businesses up here immediately after the storm went to work with what they had to clear good sections of road and making temporary roads in the riverbeds to get supplies into some of the areas. I feel for these communities in all of the affected states, this is not going to be a good year for you guys, I just hope you all will be able to locate some of the missing people safe and sound, though by the look of it I fear more is to come.

This is so mind blowing. We live in Middle Tennessee and were out in Chimney Rock and Biltmore Village for in August and we were on this same road. I am sorry for everyone who lost a loved and losing everything they had. These videos really show the devastation that no one else is showing. Stay safe.

I never ever imaged that flooding could do something so massive in damage before. It makes me rethink about how seriously I should consider flash-flooding warnings in my own community (I normally ignore them cause we get them so much and they never quite reach me). I'm just blown away with how much of an impact a hurricane could have so far in land. I don't think anyone could have imagined this, so I wouldn't blame people in TN and NC for not evacuating. My condolences for those who lost their lives and homes.
This Hurricane was 102% under the control of Weather Modification Technologies…….1. A day before Hurricane Helene was Off the west coast of Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key FL, SQUARE SCALAR waves were viewed in the Gulf of Mexico. This can ONLY occur due to frequencies like HAARP or other Weather Technologies that the Androgynous ✌️elites have access to. 2. *****The DoD just signed a 90+ million dollar deal with Abermarle-Lithium to start digging in western NC as early as 2025. Ground Surveys revealed THE LARGEST LITHIUM DEPOSITS ON EARTH are in this area of western NC!
The bottom line - this Hurricane was guided to this area because Uncle Sam wants that Land! This is a Lahaina Maui Land Grab part 2, but without the lasers 🤣. God Bless and GodSpeed 💪
I suspect we may begin to see more as actual locals regain access to the internet. News orgs would just be a burden to go deep in to capture stuff like this, and frankly, I'm also kind of glad not to see them capturing a ton of footage from the only other option (helis) because that airspace is needed for the emergency response in a way it isn't in many other situations.
People complain they are only reporting on Asheville and such, but OTOH there's reasons for them not to swarm into the more remote/smaller places. They would just be a burden on the tenuous situation, with the way most news crews operate. I'm hopeful this limited reporting could still help drive help to the whole area if news would just mention "it's a huge area affected just like this, imagine this same devastation like this for miles that we can't even get to", even though limited locations are getting featured visually in the news. The damage at these places can still get the point of how bad it all is if the news just plays it right.
News agencies could buy footage from locals on the ground. Pay with water and food. And other goods. Power saws. People with drone cameras.
Amen to this blows my mind ove drove one time to Louisville down pour water up to door of my car was terrified water running off hills and that was terrifying can't imagine that it can get so crazy so fast. Said I would never driv such crazy circumstances again to get to work flash food no joke and next time I'll call in l. At the time drove hour away to get to work at the time. Hadn't flooded at home but man other counties it did and just crazy. So just seeing this and fear so many had one their hearts to see all swept away. Just so heart breaking. However gives you whole new meaning of flash flood don't think you can't be affected even like us being on high ground. Prayers to all affected
Even living in Kasas where tornados, and pretty big ones at that, can barely equal the destruction that amount of water can do. The wide spread depth of what I've been seeing. Almost unbelievable, although I know it's true. I certainly don't find this disaster a laughing matter, but the sight of that beaver walking away from the river, seemingly shaking his head at the destruction, brought a chuckle out of me. Followed by tears at the loss many have experienced. The country is watching and praying for all of you. ❤
During a 3 hour drive yesterday I searched and searched to try to find some news coverage about this catastrophe (all major news channels on Sirius Radio). Found not a thing except for very good interview on the NASCAR channel of all things. Interviewing Gregg Biffle, a past NASCAR driver, who was flying essential supplies to isolated places. He gave a pretty good description. That was the only information I found in 3 hours of trying.
This channel and some other private youtube channels are providing far superior real time information than any "mainstream" news. I hope you are aware of how important and valuable your presentations are. Turning out private youtube channels have evolved to becone the better "go to: way to get good information over "Mainstream media". Seeing the vanished road was an eye opener.

It's difficult for the mainstream media to bury stories any more when there are citizens out there who can shoot footage of events and put it on TH-cam in minutes.
Partially because for most people in the US the storm has come and gone. I work remotely from Florida and my bosses in NY disagreed with me that my dentist would close his office and I'd need to schedule a different day to go.

My family owned a cabin on lower bat cave drive(the upper part of the lower lol) for decades (we sold it a few years ago) we’ve gotten a few pictures of it. When you were at the 64 bridge I was hoping you’d get across and go up there to see what it was like. We’ve had generations of our family drive on those roads hundreds of times. So sad to see to see the town gone and probably never coming back. Thank you for documenting

It’s absolutely incredible, the sheer force & magnitude of the power of that much water is infathomable… it just shows us all how Mother Nature can slowly shape the planet, literally moving mountains. Hey man, I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciated this video. You did an amazing job of documenting this catastrophe from the perspective of someone who is living it, not just reporting on it from the safety and comfort of a news truck. Fantastic video and narrative. It's hard to imagine a level of infrastructure damage this severe on such an enormous scale, but you've given us a clear picture of it, and it's heartbreaking. Thanks for posting this.

The picture leads to a problem with the criteria and the destruction and it shows how careless people can be. This shows how negligently people have prepared for the future or for such problems. People tend to repeat mistakes and not learn from them.

The devastation is heartbreaking
Thank you for braving the elements. My cabin is immediately downstream from the bridge on the Edneyville side and we have been desperately searching for footage to see if it made it. All media is in Chimney Rock or Asheville. Yours is the only footage I've seen of the "in between" and is greatly appreciated. There is no access from either direction and it doesn't look like there will be anytime soon. Our beloved area is devastated. We have friends hiking in soon to check for those of us that don't have a way yet to get there. Keep up the good work. Bat Cave will never be the same. God Bless.

I'm at a complete loss for words. The damage and destruction you showed in this upload is as you said, unimaginable. I'm glad you and your family are okay. It was good to see the neighbors in your area out there taking things into their own hands. Sending T's&P's to everyone in the area. News reports are that there's a ton of help either there or on their way. This clean up is going to be a huge undertaking. Thanks for the update. It was hard to watch, but a reminder to try and always be prepared and ready.

We drove down there from northern Indiana and stayed in a cabin on the other end of Lake Lure for my brother in law's wedding two years ago. Went up on Chimney Rock and down the trail to Hickory Nut Falls. Such a beautiful area and great little towns. I'm still shocked every time I've seen the pictures and videos from down there. So much destruction. Hope you all are able to get cleaned up and rebuilt. We're definitely thinking about all of you in the areas on both sides of the mountains. Crazy stuff.
My favorite place destroyed. Been going since childhood and can't describe how it made me feel... the nostalgia is palpable for me. You walked by places I've been to hundreds of times... now almost unrecognizable. Cabins, homes, and businesses... gone. The river bed 4 to 5 times wider. Did the people have any warning? Makes me cry for their losses (and it's a tourist-dependent place) and the loss of this beautiful, magical place.
Sounds like Lahaina, Hawaii comments. Glad the DEMONCRAPS SENT ALL THAT MONEY TO ISRAEL AND UKRAINE….

Crazy as I was just passing through Chimney Rock a few weeks ago. Told myself I needed to stop in when it wasn't busy tourist season but looks like thats not happening anymore. Thanks for posting the video

Man the futher you walked , the sadder I got my heart just fell to the floor, I loved that area , I took my grandmother to chimney rock every year forcrhe last 20 yrs of her life as she wanted to see her friend A lady named Mabel / or that’s what we called her and now this lady’s long passed away now but she had a apple farm an sold apples 🍎, they were so good , my grandma is passed away now but so many beautiful memories from chimney rock 🪨, stay chimney rock strong an I will return to visit one day when it’s time an all have some what healed , God bless y’all an comfort each person in there needs , I hope you all heal soon an the rock is rebuilt for the next generation

My husband and I lived near Edneyville until recently. Thank you for the on the ground coverage. I cannot believe how different the landscape is now. If I hadn't driven, walked and fished there so many times I would truly have no idea where you were, but sadly I do. I'm heartbroken and still in disbelief.

I live in Ohio and I’ve never lived in an area that had this kind of weather destruction. Thank you for sharing it, I have been donating to groups that are providing food and water and so forth, so I am really glad that you posted the aerial recovery link. I’m going to donate there now. God bless you and stay safe, There’s a long road of cleanup and recovery ahead, but you will all get through this because you care about each other and we who live elsewhere care about you.

That is one of my favorite riding roads in that area. Heart breaking. Going to be years or never before that is restored. Heart goes out to the victims of the rogue storm.

I think I needed to see this to really believe that an area that I loved so well was not really there anymore. We go to the Mts several times a year, and chimney rock was often our destination. My first dates with my current and hopefully last husband were here, and I loved it dearly. We would have been going to western NC in the fall for the leaves as we always do. I spent most of my life in the NE TN and WNC area. This is just unreal damage that the rest of the world doesn't really understand the scale of - YET. Prayers for all. It's never going to be the same.
