  • Join me on the cruise of a lifetime as I visit South America and Antarctica on Holland America’s Oosterdam cruise ship. In part one of my vlog, we journey to Santiago, Chile. On two Holland America excursions we visit downtown Santiago and the Andes mountains up to 9,000 feet! Our embarkation day was quite interesting and a bit out of the ordinary with a closed port and hundreds of delayed passengers. We finish out by looking at our very first day on the ship. This series of vlogs will cover this entire 22 day trip. I will have a new vlog for you every 3 days or so. If you are interested in seeing in depth what happened on our embarkation day: • Holland America Ooster... #hollandamerica #cruiselife #antarcticacruise #southamericacruise #oosterdam #santiago #andesmountains

I'm really enjoying your videos on this particular cruise! We're going in early January of '25 and I need all the info I can get my hands on to be prepared. The packing will be a challenge but you've helped a lot on that. I'm considering the basic internet for $291 just for checking emails, uploading pictures (not video) to Facebook and of course staying in touch with family. But if the connections are not that good I hate to spend the money. What do you think? Thanks for all the tips & pictures you've shared!

Took me 3 days to upload the video-even though Oosterdam has Starlink (and I lowered the video from my usual 4K to 1080p) the connection kept dropping, plus I couldn’t get on the internet at all (or got dropped) when everyone on the ship wanted to be online (before bedtime; after sailing away from ports). In any event, I’m glad to be able to bring you videos while I’m on the ship!

Hi there, myself and a friend are doing this cruise in 2025 just a couple of points that may seem irrelevant but trying to get info of Holland America is quite difficult first of all how many formal nights are there secondly would you advise heavy winter clothing for when we go south i think I’m correct in saying the weather in chile and Argentina is quite warm so that is not a problem but the further south we travel i think it does get a lot colder…..thanks

I believe we had 3 formal nights, but this was not a terribly formal group, at least on my cruise, so I mostly wore nice pants and tops for formal evenings; nothing too fancy. As for the clothing, I think I cover this in another video ,but you are correct-warm weather clothing is needed in Buenos Aires and Santiago, then you need cold weather gear as you go further south. You defnitely need to pack for both summer and winter.

Hi. Can you tell us which tour you took up to the Andes please. Checked Viator and there seems to be many; and would you recommend.

My tour was a pre-cruise tour offered by Holland America. It was a small group tour in a van that went to Portillo, where we had lunch at the ski resort overlooking the alpine lake. It was an all-day tour (I know all of this is in the video, but just in case the information helps you find an Independent tour operator that does the same itinerary. If you are doing a pre-cruise hotel arranged by your cruise line, they may offer the tour.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are looking at this cruise too so this is all very interesting. Did your balcony stateroom come with a bath tub? I have only been on the newer HAL ships and they all have showers, which I prefer.
Also, for the pre-cruise excursions, did HAL pick you up from the hotel or did you have to make your way to the pickup location?

Ty for sharing, I love your luggage! Chile looks so beautiful! The food looks good and I love the room! I’m sorry the internet is so spotty, it’s amazing you got it uploaded though! Holland looks like a brand I would love to try, I usually go Carnival as well but this looks good. I’m glad your hubby didn’t get hurt bad, I always slip or fall on trips…😅 Ty again for sharing!

And thank you for following along! The trip has been incredible so far. I have so much to share! And its definitely not Carnival and that is OK! I think Holland America is perfect for this type of trip.

Thanks. Glad to hear first night in the MDR was easy. Over on the CC message boards lots of people say the first night is chaotic.

Yes, for us it was extremely easy and quick, even though we did not understand the reservation system (thought we had a reservation but there was actually no availability). We are tending to eat early, and that has worked for us on this trip; last night was our longest wait for MDR AND longest meal with nearly everyone on the ship back late from excursions in Ushuaia.

Thanks for sharing. Sorry😢 to hear your husband took a fall, I hope he is doing better. I am a clutz myself and always say I have 2 left feet. I can't wait to see how your adventure unfold, and can't wait for your blog. You are always very informative and I have always wanted to go to Antarctica it's on my bucket list.
