  • When should I use 'Eu FUI' or 'Eu ERA'? I am pretty confident that you don't ask yourself this question anymore, since it was answered some lessons ago (the link to it is right below). Now it is time to answer another common question - When should I use 'Eu ESTIVE' or 'Eu ESTAVA'? In today's lesson, you will learn when to use the 'Pretérito Perfeito' of 'ESTAR' and when to use the 'Pretérito Imperfeito' of 'ESTAR' in a fun way!
    Besides that, don't miss the tip of the day, where you will learn how (most) Brazilians pronounce the verb 'ESTAR' in those verb conjugations.

    I ended up getting confused and I don't know what I'm missing in my understanding. Earlier in the video, you mentioned that pretérito perfeito is generally used to denote a specific point in time. But when it came to the examples of "estava" etc. You mentioned times e.g 8h10, to me, that's being specific about a point in time, but instead of estive, estava is used. I don't understand why with this general rule you mentioned earlier. I hope I made sense, and that you could help clarify this doubt. Where am I going wrong in my understanding? Bjs.

    • @PlainPortuguese
      @PlainPortuguese  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Olá! I see why you got confused. I may have left out some important considerations. Let me try to clear things out with a few examples 😊.
      1. Ontem eu estive no médico ('pretérito perfeito' - 'ontem' is a specific moment in the past. In this sentence, I am emphasizing a fact, a punctual action of being in a place in the past at a specific moment)
      2. Ontem eu estava no médico quando você me ligou ('imperfeito' - although 'ontem' is still a specific moment, 'being at the doctor' is now the background to something else; a context that is continuous in time)
      3. Eu estive na sua casa às 8h ('pretérito perfeito' - I am stating the fact of being at your place at 8h; similar to 'I stopped by your place at 8h')
      4. Eu estava na sua casa às 8h ('imperfeito' - The emphasis is now on the circumstance. 'Being at your place' was an ongoing action that was happening when the clock hit 8h)
      Maybe, a better approach to understanding when to use 'estive' x 'estava' could be the fact x context (circumstance) perspective. Maybe! I hope I didn't make you even more confused!

    • @MissDre19
      @MissDre19 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PlainPortuguese thank you, I think it's making sense now. Would it be correct to assume that "estive" is like the wagons at point in time while "estava" is more what was happening, providing the context during that point in time?

    Eu posso utilizar "tive" as experiences questions ?
    Such as :
    have you ever watch this movie? Or have you ever been to Mexico?
    Gracias maestra Bea !
    sempre fico feliz com suas aulas

    • @PlainPortuguese
      @PlainPortuguese  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. In Portuguese, you should use the 'Pretérito Perfeito', which is equivalent to the 'Simple Past' in English
      (I know it may sound confusing, but in Portuguese 'I have watched this movie' and 'I watched this movie' are both equivalent to 'Eu assisti a este filme' - 'Pretérito Perfeito'.
      Therefore, 'Have you watched this movie?' and 'Did you watch this movie?' are both translated into 'Você assistiu a este filme?' - 'Pretérito Perfeito em português).
      You may use 'tive' as the past ('Pretérito Perfeito') of 'ter' (have) and the past of 'estar' (be - in a more colloquial way, as pointed out in the lesson). For example, 'Eu tive gripe no ano passado' (I had the flu last year); 'Eu já (es)tive em Buenos Aires.' (I have already been to Buenos Aires). 😊

    • @5511rafa
      @5511rafa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Infelizmente para os aprendizes, “eu tive” e “você teve” são também conjugações corretas do verbo ter. Isso complica as coisas quando as mesmas palavras são usadas informalmente para dizer o verbo “estar” no passado. A gente tem que usar o contexto para entender direito! 😅

    • @PlainPortuguese
      @PlainPortuguese  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Olá! Tudo bem? I haven't made any lessons focusing only on 'I've been', yet. However, bear in mind tha the translation of 'I've been' in Portuguese isn't cut and dried. Let's take a look at the following examples.
      1. I've been a teacher since 2006 - Sou professora desde 2006. (ser - presente)
      2. I've been here since 9 am - Estou aqui desde às 9h da manhã. (estar - presente)
      3. I've been married once. - Fui casada uma vez. (ser - passado)
      4. I've been to the US once. - Estive nos EUA uma vez (estar - passado)
      5. I've been criticized by ... - Tenho sido criticada pelos... (ser - pretérito perfeito composto - voz passiva).
      You will find below the links to some lessons that may help you understand better when to use each.
