I use featherweight non fusible interfacing for a foundation. No need to tear it off, it stays inside the quilt. Don't know it's even inside the finished quilt. I call these String quilts.

When I was growing up we always took our fabric scraps to our Grandmother. Once when I was expecting my first child and was taking Grandma on a weekly shopping trip she had me wait for her to show me her newest quilt. Much to my surprise, without her knowing it, every piece of fabric in her quilt was from MY clothes. She had used pink and blue flannel for the backing. When I told her of the items made with each and every piece she had used, she offered me the quilt for my baby on the way. Today, that baby is 35, Grandma died when she was 90 back in 1991, but I still have that beloved quilt. Just had to share!
I so enjoy your tutorials. They inspire me to quilt after I finish reupholstering a couch, love seat, and Grandpa's old recliner.

Hi Rosemary, Your story gave me tears in my eyes! what a wonderful gift to have! Your own fabric scraps and you got them back with a great gift from grandma! I have finished two quilts for my twin grandchildren ( one boy and one girl ) and send them. They are 5 years old now. This was my first time doing quilts so they are not like professionals but I was happy that I could make some thing for my grand children to cherish when I am gone. Love you!

Love this channel because it's quick, to the point, while still being thorough and there is no extra gadgets or templates that one must buy in order to make beautiful quilts. I appreciate that. Yes there will be expense in fabric, basic tools, notions, and patterns but not all the extra stuff that seems to prevail in the quilt world.

I'm using old phone book paper to make the same blocks at the moment just using off cuts and scraps. I'll have enough to make a whole quilt from this set. I've learned that in future I need to deal with all scraps after a quilt is finished, before they become overwhelming. Thanks for the layout ideas. Great help Donna.

To save money, and paper tearing time, I gathered 100% cotton sheets from yard sales and thrift stores. The color doesn't matter but I tried to stick with white, cream, and pastels. I washed them well and cut my squares at 10-12", then drew my starting lines. This method added another layer of fabric (and warmth) to the quilt.
If you make the square from strips from one corner to the opposite one, you can cut the finished square in half, or in quarters and sew them back together, or mix and match from different blocks to make it really scrappy. I made a whole quilt in blacks and whites with black sashing.
Using a fabric square as a backing is also great for crumb blocks.
You can also use them as a base for traditional Crazy Quilt blocks. My mother was legally blind and wanted to make a crazy quilt. I sewed velvets and satins in random configurations then handed it over to her for the fancy stitches and embellishments. I used wide strips of velveteen as sashing and had a friend machine embroider a fancy label. Working together, we completed her crazy quilt just 6 weeks before she passed, so it is something extremely precious to me.

A few things I like about this tutorial: 1) The title of this video (I love that you used the word, "Redemption"), 2) How you showed where and why to draw the diagonal line (1/4 inch from the middle), 3) How easy it was to make an attractive flange for a pillow, 4) the star layout as an option, 5) making a dresser runner is a nice coordinating bonus, 6) At the end where Matt shows us the giveaway - "Just cut a little Matt, and we'll try it out" - One might say that in this instance, "Father Knows Best" :-) (P.S. the chirping bird sounds at the end was a nice touch too.)

If you start with a square of solid fabric you can draw a diagonal and sew your scrap strips onto the musilin avoiding the stabilizing paper and then your block is finished! My aunt showed me this method.

I have made several things from my scraps like quilt/pillow shams/ throw pillow covers using the string/scrap pattern. Only difference in the way I made mine was that I used the phone book to cut the paper squares. The paper rips off very easy.
