    • @rhonafenwick5643
      @rhonafenwick5643 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@calypso4882 Quite probably not. The eye socket's sort of funnel-shaped (to hold not just the eyeball, but also the muscles controlling it as well as the optic nerve) and so the pencil would likely not catch on any side of it to accrue enough force to snap. If anything the socket would most likely direct the pencil straight into the brain stem. Which is horrifying and now I wish I hadn't thought about that 😐

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stephanniemorin Lobotomies tend to involve the prefrontal cortex more (the bit directly behind your forehead), as you can damage that and produce radical personality changes (mostly by destroying executive function and thereby rendering the person basically a zombie) without killing the patient. "Icepick" lobotomies were/are performed by slipping a long, thing metal rod beside the eye inside the nose-side of the socket and driving it up through the top of the cavity into the interior of the skull. Then, you use the rod like a windshield wiper and scramble that portion of the brain. Takes about 5 minutes, often done while the patient is awake, and recovery is so minimal that the procedure is often done on an "outpatient" basis, like getting a wart removed. The only non-brain injury produced is often just a black eye.
      Going back from the eye into the interior of the brain, as Joker did, creates serious risk of disrupting fundamental survival systems, like the stuff that keeps your heart beating. Especially dangerous the closer you get to the brain-stem at the bottom rear of the skull. This is why those looking to kill themselves by gunshot often put the barrel in their mouths, rather than, say, under the chin (to the Preacher fans - hi, Arseface!).

    • @echelon2k8

      Knowing Joker's love of novelty knives, etc, it likely wasn't an ordinary 'pencil' to begin with, especially considering the way he first stabbed it into the table. All part of the 'magic trick', no doubt.

    People rightfully praise Heath Ledger for his performance in this, and everyone is great, but man, that part when Gordon says, "We have to save Dent! *I* have to save Dent!" gets me every time. Just the way he says "I." Gary Oldman puts his entire soul into that single syllable.

    Yes the truck flipping scene was done practically
    They actually flipped an 18 wheeler
    And the scene when Joker blows up the hospital was improvised on the spot because there was a technical issue with the pyrotechnics that delayed the explosion
    So when you see Joker confused as to why the building isn't blowing up it is a genuinely real reaction 😄

    • @ethancoolbro18gamer86

      Can confirm: the pyro in the hospital scene was set to go off in 2 stages. The first stage was the "cosmetic" explosions as he was walking out. the 2nd stage was the actual building demolition. That was the plan, so as not to blow up Heath as he was walking out lol
      Also, it was more than "they flipped an 18 wheeler"
      They flipped an 18 wheeler on the streets of Chicago, and the only CGI used was to edit out the giant plunger in the trailer they used to do the flipping. Also, the straight on camera view of the flip was the only shot in the movie not filmed on 1080P cameras, because they only had one take of it and that camera angle was an "added shot" after they had already set up the other angles.

      It's also a joker theme, all it takes is one bad enough day for anyone to become like him. All of us have our dark side that we keep locked away until we break. Harvey isn't important, the fact he was considered uncorruptable and purest of gotham is

    • @osmanyousif7849

      In the comics, Harvey Dent was always broken though. He suffered from bipolar, schizophrenia, dissociative personality disorder. The coin he always carries around with him was passed down to him by his abusive father, who’s the reason why he suffered these mental illnesses. He casually flipped the coin as a way to handle stress. But when things get too far for him, “Big Bad Harv” takes over.
      Heck, even in the comics Sal Maroni is actually the reason why Harvey ends up getting his face scarred.

      @@Dave_of_Mordor Most film makers use cgi; Nolan's preference for using practical effects wherever possible is unusual these days. @@Dave_of_Mordor Do you not remember what the Joker said? "I'm a fan of dynamites, gunpowder... and GASOLINEEE. It's not about the money, it's about.. sending a message." All jokes aside haha, this movie had a huge budget, blowing up an old building isn't all that too surprising.
      Adding on to the lack of CGI, for a while I had thought the scene where the Tumbler that Batman drove head on into the trash truck to eliminate Joker's henchmen was CGI. That was actually done practically, but obviously not by driving the actual Tumblers into a head-on collision. But rather they used miniature replicas of both trash truck and the Bat Tumbler. They even built the surrounding environment like bridge, pillars and side buildings as miniatures just to film it without CGI.

    Fun fact: For anyone who doesn’t know or is interested the thing with the plane is a real thing. The Fulton surface-to-air recovery system commonly referred to as operation skyhook was a real thing thing that they used from 1965 to September 1996 when the practice was terminated due to advancements in helicopters and other aircrafts.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting info, thanks! Skyhook also had a bunch of operational restrictions (eg. even if you can get permission for the airspace, you gotta fly something relatively slow and low to do it, which is not great if MANPADs or AA might be about, and you need relatively open terrain to do the pick-up without bashing your passenger to pieces on the nearby landscape features, etc.). Also, even with the full-body harness to distribute the impact, apparently instantly going from 0 to at least 150+ mph really, really, really fuckin' hurts.
      A very cool technique given the limitations of the time, though! Talk about lateral thinking.

    It's strongly theorized that Rachel was recast because Katie Holmes was attracting some unusual and unwanted press after her relationship with Tom Cruise went public, and he started jumping on Oprah's couch like a weirdo and pushing some of his Scientology beliefs during interviews.
    Joker's lip-licking and lip-smacking came about from Heath's discomfort with the prosthetic "scars". He found them very uncomfortable to wear on his cheeks and lips, so he would lick at them reflexively.
    Yes, that truck flip was completely practical. They actually flipped a real truck on LaSalle Street in Chicago. At 16:23 when you talk about Harvey reflipping the coin, I don't think you realized this, but that's a rare mint coin that has two "faces" or "heads", one on each side. So Harvey was bluffing. It was never going to come up tails, but the psychopath didn't know that. It's a reference in the comics to Janus, the Roman god, who had two sides and represented beginnings & ends, journeys & transitions, and duality. In the comics after Dent becomes scarred, the coin is deliberately marred and defaced, to represent Two-Face and his obsession with chance, whereas I think this movie just understates that the coin was defaced by the gasoline explosion.

The prisoner tossing the detonator into the water. These are just a few of countless moments Nolan perfected in this masterpiece! I appreciate all that you do Ange, much love for these!

    Joker didn’t consider what he did “a plan.” He just introduced chaos and waited to see what would happen. He had a pretty good idea what the outcome would be, but as we saw, some things did surprise him. The cool thing is he still technically won because he took away Gotham’s white knight and the dark knight and a chunk of the city’s hope

    This brings me back, I saw this 6 times in the movie theater when this came out. Fun fact The jokers voice isn’t Heaths real voice. Heath imitated Tom Waits the singer. If you watch a interview with Tom waits and listen to the joker, they sound identical. Thanks for reminding me of the good days. No one since has played the joker this good! Rest In Peace Heath Ledger. You are missed! 🤡

    There's a film that has another villain who uses a coin to decide peoples fate, his name is Anton Chigurh and he is without a doubt the most psychopathic person in cinema history! The film is called, "No Country for Old Men" and it's a true masterpiece. Javier Barden's performance will give you the real creeps as Anton. I highly suggest watching it for it's nihilistic and pessimistic views on life and how a deadly cat & mouse chase can play out good vs. evil.

    Hey, Ange! Great reaction as usual!
    MCU in this film stands for Major Crimes Unit.
    Yes, the title reveals the Dent and Batman are kind of polar opposites fighting the same battle, hence Harvey being the White Knight, and Bruce being the Dark Knight.
    Dent's foreshadowed his own fate with the line at the restaurant: "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Dent died the villain, but Batman lived long enough to make himself from hero TO villain so that Harvey's reputation could be protected and hope in Gotham could thrive.
    The boat scene when I first saw it surprised me - can regular people be as sadistic as a crazed madman when their life is on the line and they're about to be blown up? You expect the prisoners to do the wrong thing, and you almost expect the citizens out of fear to do the same.....neither of them blew up the other boat because they're both human, and that's the whole point.
    And no, the Joker doesnt really "plan" - well, okay he does to a degree - but his agenda is always chaos. Alfred was right again - Joker wasnt looking for anything logical. The Gotham mafia tried to buy him, he took over and burned his share of the money. Batman beat him to get info out of him, and he still didnt save Rachel. Dent was horribly disfigured, and without Rachel, he lost everything. Joker saw that and tipped him over the edge into madness when Dent was already a bit unhinged when Rachel was threatened.
    Mostly, the Joker failed, but if Batman, Gordon and even Dent hadn't been there, Gotham would've been even worse off, and more citizens would've died.
    I think one of the greatest Batman writers of the comics, Dennis O'Neal said that the only real motivation the Joker has to do what he does is that he believes there's not enough laughter in the world, but unfortunately for the Joker, what makes him laugh is other people's suffering. He's a mentally unstable individual who could laugh himself tired while beating you to death with a crowbar.

    "Please tell me they actually flipped the truck on set!"
    It was an actual street in Chicago, not a set. Yes, the truck flipped, by a big pneumatic piston inside the trailer. And Christopher Nolan was wearing a t-shirt that read, "CG is for wimps."
