Where's the "I survived Eli Gilbert's '30 Days of Banjo' (and it only took me 6 months)" T-Shirt? Perfect timing on this video. I think I am about ready to take a crack at this one. Thanks for the great content.
@@charlesshepherd2004 Short answer...I haven't started. Right after posting I developed an injury to my index finger on my fretting hand and had to take three and a half months off for it to recover. I am all good now and back at it but had to take it slow at first and re-learn a bunch of stuff that I lost during my time off. That said, I think I am getting close to the point of learning something new. Coin toss between Foggy Mountain Breakdown and Clinch Mountain Back Step.
Thank you so much for this lesson. Finally there’s somebody that not only explains everything but doesn’t go 100 miles an hour. I’m really enjoying learning this song.
@Eli Gilbert Banjo As a 30 yr banjo survivor 😁, I'm very appreciative to you for teaching this version of FMBD. It was the harder version for me to learn. Learning to drop that thumb down to the 2nd is awkward at 1st, but I cannot stress how extremely important it is to master this technique!!!! It is used in almost every single traditional banjo tune ever written since FMBD. I never learned by tabs or even by a full on teacher. I learned almost completely by ear & early on, I never learned to drop my thumb down to the 2nd string. For that reason, I had to re-learn several phrases of Earl's songs & also re-think the way I played several other tunes. It was Joe Isaacs that caught on to my mistake & brought it to my attention. Once I learned it & started effectively utilize it in my playing, it was as if I had discovered the missing link to everything I had been playing, up to that point!!!! Your banjo really sounds great. It's perfectly balanced right in the middle, where I like to hear one. It's not to bright & it's not too mellow with just the right amount of sustain. Sounds similar to my 11.
I did the 30 days a couple of years ago, I'd just bought my banjo when you were putting out those lessons. Ended up shelving the banjo for a bit but taken it up again two months ago. Thanks for coming back with more lessons, I've been following Bill Evans' course this time around but this will complement it nicely 🙂
You do a great job, sir enjoy your TH-cam channel playing Earl Scruggs, style music and what you teach is very easy to understand. Thanks I appreciate you.
Love this lesson. Breaking it down into small pieces is great. I wish I could purchase just the TAB for song and nothing else. Unfortunately, have enough monthly financial obligations to cover. Thanks for the good work you do.
Eli... Thank you!! This is great!! I did the 30 days of banjo, excellent course. Your tutorials are, hands down, the best on the internet!!! Ok, that's enough of me raving, but im just truly grateful and thankful for your content!! 😀 🪕🎶🪕🎶
Very good lesson. Note that the tab in the seventh measure G lick after the Em section shows a 2/3 hammer on the third string however Eli is playing a slide just like Earl did. No doubt a 2/3 hammer as tabbed also would work but the slide with the slight stretch sound great. Nice sounding banjo with super clean technique
Thank you for this comment. I was confused because I had been playing it as a slide and thought I was doing it the same way he did but The tab didn’t match. Appreciate the clarification
Absolutely appreciate you Eli! After having taken several online banjo lessons I have to say that you by far have exceeded what is normally taught and explained! Thank you and Great Job!
Great lesson as always Eli Gilbert Banjo. The 30 days lessons are Justinguitar-level online teaching, really appreciate what you’re doing and wanted to say thank you.
I wish I was the first commenter here so I could catch people’s attention who might not have given this lesson session a full and close listen. I have learned my rolls and paused for the last 15 years. I am finally ready, mentally, to learn the damn instrument (in Scruggs’ Style of course). You provided all the technicals plus the right amount of deep insight to make the path toward learning this tune facile and inevitable. It all clic’d. In fact that last bit of advice about listening and sounding like what you want to hear….I understand music. Thank You Sir! SUBSCRIBED
Hi Eli, thanks very much for that vid, it's really well explained and demonstrated in a great way. I've just learned the basics of the tune from another great player on TH-cam, and still trying to to master it, but yours is slightly different, with a bit more involved, and I'd love to be able to get there with both of them ! Well done, thanks, Steve 👍🏻🪕
Slowing the video to 50% is great...that is until you forget you did that and then Eli begins to talk...the hair and glasses fit together with that rate of speech, though, perfectly...try it for yourself 😂😂😂
I love this! Thank you so much for breaking it down and making this so much easier to learn, it’s very helpful 🙏🏼 if you’re open to suggestions, could you post a video on Sally Goodin (preferably the Pharis & Jason Romero version)? Such a beautiful song, I haven’t been able to find a good video or tabs for it
I saw Earl Scruggs play in 1980 in Georgetown Washington DC at a little bar on 'L' Street. He wore a shark skin suit and his band all wore flannel shirts and jeans. He called his group the Earl Scruggs Revue.

I’m on day 8 of 30 days of banjo, can’t wait to come back to this in the end and learn one of my favorite banjo tunes!
Keep plugging away at it. It took me longer than 30 days to get through it all, but it was worth it.
How's that going now?

Thanks Eli you are the best banjo instructor in the world. I also went through your 30 days of banjo and you make it so easy.
Thanks!
Nice!! Going to have to start picking again, thanks Eli!
Many Thanks! This is a great lesson and love the attention to Earl's details that would have passed me by. 🇬🇧

Can't wait to learn this. I am on day 21 of your 30-day challenge.
Great lesson. Hard to make it any more understandable than this.

Eli,..you are very gifted and appreciate all your sharing,..not sure what made you go for the longer hair look!

❤😅😅😅it’s pretty awesome at slower speed
great lesson
Great job
This is my most wanted to learn tune . 👏❤️🪕 Thank you for doing this Eli .

Thanks Eli
I have heard this song a million times
Cool bananas 😊
Wish I had this for a Dobro. Man, I want to play this song.🦇

Great video! Have you ever done JD Crowe’s Careless Love?
The Dobro player in me can't resist dropping that thumb down on that second string string
.😂
Dear Eli, would you ever consider teaching Banjo Riff the way Rob McCoury plays it? Maybe not the entire song but the first minute. Thank you
i signed up for patreon and paid money and cant access anything.
Why do you slide on some hammer ONs and use another finger on others? Is this just preference or what’s next in the measure ?
The intro hammer ons have been giving me trouble for months. I feel like the rest I have down pretty well.
AWESOME! A beautiful Deering banjo came into my hands 10 years ago and I'm still just noodling. Now I've got a goal! Muchos Gracias Senor!!
I'm still trying to find your Patrion page.

Is it me or the 14th measure doesn't make sense and you are doing it another way rythmically?
Yeah, there's a mistake in the tabulature - you are referencing the beginning where it's written with 16th notes (3rd fret, 2nd fret)
Thanks, I was confused by that too
Embarrassed to say I've been playing the first measure incorrectly for years.
