  • Smash Ultimate Makes Kirby’s Marx Even Better! Marx is one of Kirby’s most famous bosses, so when HAL Laboratory adapted him as a boss in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, they had big shoes to fill. Luckily, this Smash boss fight in the World of Light and Spirits modes is very faithful to the original fight from Kirby Super Star, and it might even be a better boss battle due to the changes Sakurai’s team added. Let’s discuss that, on this episode of Boss Battle Breakdown!

I KNOW RIGHT?! Oh, I know exactly why he doesn’t scream in this one. Notice how none of Marx Soul’s unique attacks are featured in this Marx fight? Notice how they use the regular Marx rather than the clearly superior Marx Soul? It’s because Sakurai directed Super Star, but not Super Star Ultra. This is true for so much Kirby content in Smash. It’s almost all from the games he’s directed: both remixes are from his games. Magalor can’t be enhanced while Marx can. Dynablade is a legendary, but it’s not even a true final boss anywhere. It all lines up. The Great Cave Offensive is chosen over any other, better, Kirby stage. The list goes on.
Edit: Removed “theme” when talking about Marx Soul in order to keep argument truthful.

Do wanna add this as a note for Star Allies. In the new mode Heroes In Another Dimension if you get the good ending Marx *does* backstab you during the credits game and you have to beat his ass there.
It's more of a minigame thing with a small time limit but it plays up the whole "he's only helping you in star allies because he thinks there's a even bigger threat out there" narrative. Also in regards to Marx's forms it's kind of implied that he's *always* had the wings and capabilities seen so him flipping between the two isn't that unfounded. Heck, the smash bros spirit that Sakurai himself made calls the winged version his "true form".

Isn't "don't judge a book by it's cover" a central theme of Kirby? Kirby is cute but super powerful. King Dedede is the bad guy but kind of cute himself. Meta Knight is sharp and scary but inside he's cute and squishy. Hmmm. Maybe it's less "don't judge a book by it's cover" and more "everything in this world is cute".

I ended up fighting Marx at the very start of my experience with Smash Ultimate, as I went straight to Kirby’s Classic Mode to refresh myself on the gameplay and ended up fighting this guy by complete accident.
I almost wish that I had been able to fight Marx in World of Light blind, as this was one of my favorite fights from the game.
I honestly really like that they paid attention to a lot of the smaller details from his fight in Super Star, such as the bizarre face he makes in the split second before firing his massive laser.
I still find it amazing that they somehow managed to make Marx even creepier than in his home game by virtue of his bizarre new moves, especially the ones involving his eyes.
They did do a good job with incorporating all sorts of nods to his boss moveset in Star Allies as well, though.
The Brawl remix of the Marx theme is also as excellent as always.

Granted, if you've read the paranoid ramblings for certain fans, you could argue they're all connected in some way. Amusingly enough, I actually can't think of a link between Marx and Zero, but both connect in some way to most of the other bosses. Drawcia is the most confusing of all of them and Nightmare's connection is pretty flimsy, but every other one I can think of (other than Gryl) connect to 1 of those 2.

Okay so props on the video subject by default. Marx was the first final boss I ever faced, so my nostalgia for him is abnormally high. And thank you for also going into how he plays with a theming expectation instead of just "IT'S HIM BUT MORE ALSO SMASH IS LIKE A KIRBY GAME DID YOU KNOW". Really appreciate that.
What I love about Marx's later two inclusions isn't necessarily redemption, but that he shows himself as a "friend". Perhaps a slightly maniacal one, but he ultimately does share some level and bond with Kirby in some fashion, even if just implied. I like the Smash Bros ending creating a sort of neutral tone with Marx, as you pointed out, and feel it furthers the theming presented in Star Allies. It's also one of the few times I think Sakurai got theming right for a Kirby game post-Super Star - Sakurai's great, but damn does he not represent Kirby post-1995 in Smash at all. Marx is obviously on the line with that, but I feel the influence of the later, darker Kirby installments in that fight, and that means a lot.
Outta curiousity, you got a favorite Kirby end boss? Bias makes me go with this guy, but escalation-wise I LOVE Star Dream from Robobot.

    • @macnamaryb7773
      @macnamaryb7773 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I prefer Star Dream Soul OS, but True Void Termina is a very close second. Only thing holding him back is the Angel phase Master Crown being surprisingly easy, and the fact that Astral Birth Void becomes a bit repetitive, despite the various ways it can use it's three attacks. Change those two things, and True Void Termina trumps Star Dream Soul OS for me.

There's one thing you kind of missed. Marx having more gory looking attacks makes him fit in with some of the other Kirby bosses. Like Zero and whatnot. I mean.... I know people keep saying Marx is super creepy. But honestly, he was more goofy to me than creepy. (Not counting the Soul version. THAT one was a bit creepy.)
But, when your first Kirby final boss was Zero.... Yeah, he's pretty mild by comparison. Ultimate, however, puts him more on that level, thanks to having veins burst from where his wings were, his eyeballs tearing from his eye sockets to be used as an attack, and the weird compound eyes attack.... Yeah, he's quite a bit more disturbing now. In a good way though. It ties into just how psychotic he is.

Nothing from Super Star Ultra or later will ever make it into Smash.
Sakurai refuses to acknowledge any Kirby games made after his departure from HAL (he quit after Air Ride’s release).
In fact, that’s the precise reason that Dedede’s Final Smash in Smash 4 was Dedede Burst instead of Smash Ultimate’s Masked Dedede attack (Dede-Rush). It’s also the real reason that Bandana Waddle Dee will never be a playable fighter.
Sakurai was petty enough to deny Masked Dedede’s existence, even though Super Star Ultra had been out for 6 years by Smash 4’s release.
It’s especially amusing, since Kirby games have done nothing but improve since other creators have taken over.

Smash acknowledges things from Kirby games Sakurai wasn't involved in all the time. Adoleine, the 3 mage sisters, Halcandria, Kirby's giant sword, Magolor, Revenge of the King, Galacta Knight, Dark Meta Knight, C.R.O.W.N.E.D., Zero ²'s theme, Kirby's robobot, Heart of Steel, some other themes from 3D Kirby games, Amazing Mirror's forest theme, & probably some stuff I'm forgetting.

i honestly think Smash Ultimate Marx and Star Allies Marx are like two sides of a coin.
I like to see the Star Allies Marx as his normal form, where he looks cute and innocent, whilest in smash ultimate, it represents the power hungry (quite literally) demonic Marx.
I think that maybe, if it wasnt because of the limitations of the era, the campaing of milky way wishes could have a playable Marx or have Marx help you in some kind of way, showing that he actually has strong powers, but maybe toned down, since in star allies his moveset is kinda designed to be op.
I love the star allies Marx because it looks like a representation of what could have been a more deep role of Marx on the whole campaign of Milky Way Wishes, that would totally make a greater bound with kirby and the player, just like Magolor did in Return to Dreamland. Plus, i can totally see Marx as a playable fighter in smash because of that, again, with really toned down attacks, and even that would be awesome, because it could be interpreted as like Marx always had those powers, the nova just maked it stronger.

Great video as always. I like that you tried to address those new attacks as well as the model and animations and such, and your whole point of "don't trust appearances" is one I feel couldn't be any more fitting to the Kirby series.
One more thing I'd like to add, however, is that Marx's three new attacks feel a little like distortions of the older ones. His eye-lasers are obviously a variant of his mouth laser that is dodged in a different way - the mouth laser required you to stay in one 'sweet spot' while the eye lasers require you to keep moving with them in order to stay safe. The screen-filling branches are a play on his plant attack where he plants seeds in random locations and thorny plants grow out of them. Again, this attack is completely turned on its head as the pattern in which the branches grow is always predetermined here - it's just a matter of making it to the safe space in time. The bouncing black eyeballs are a little more difficult to figure out, but my guess is that it's the cutter attack distorted in the same way as the other two. While the cutters were launched all at once in a predetermined manner, the bouncing eyeballs are fired off one at a time and bounce unpredictably around the arena, as well as lingering around for longer. This requires the player to keep thinking on their feet to avoid them, as opposed to the cutters where they had to predict where the cutters would fly in relation to Marx's position. All in all, I think these new attacks are great and add to the whole feeling of insanity, as they look similar to other attacks (the bouncing eyeballs less so) but actually work in the complete opposite fashion, messing with the player just that little bit more.
Sorry this comment was so long - I didn't mean to write a huge essay this time - but there's one more thing I'd like to ask. With Giga Bowser becoming a boss once more, how well do you think they handled his return? I can guess what they might have been going for - the format of the Melee battle is combined with the 'every boss uses stamina' mentality of later installments and the non-flinching characteristic added to Giga Bowser when he became a Final Smash in Brawl and the Wii U/3DS game. If that's the case, how well do you think they captured the character of Giga Bowser throughout the series? Or do you think they were trying to make something different altogether? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

As a longtime Kirby fan, this battle made me so goddamn happy. From the bombasticly over the top intro and defeat animations, to the faithful recreations of all his old attacks, and the wrenches thrown in known as his new attacks, which REALLY caught me off guard, but left me smiling the first time. And they finally got to use the Brawl Marx remix in something. It made me so incredibly happy to see a Kirby boss this faithfully recreated. Besides the final boss of WoL, this is by far my favorite fight in the franchise, it's just so well done.

Excellent video as always. I think the reason why Marx's recreated boss is more similar to the other recreated bossed was because Sakurai worked on Kirby Super Star before Smash (plus, the Kirby games that has the Super Star game play style like Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot, and Star Allies pretty much play very similarly to Smash but with one attack button instead of 2) though Dracula was also pretty spot on to his original boss but that boss honestly seemed very easy to recreate in a 2D playing field, same creator or not. Now I would joke that Smash is secretly Kirby Spin off fighting staring Nintendo (and gaming all stars) but I am sure a lot of people did so already. Also, when it comes to Marx's Star Allies appearance, I always seen it as a non canon playable character that was added for fun but I could be wrong.

Filling the screen with attacks has become a common tactic of Kirby’s final bosses in recent years.
The true secret final boss (yes, the TRUE secret final boss; the distinction is necessary) in Star Allies puts almost every previous final boss in the series to shame with its absurdly erratic attack patterns and ridiculous levels of projectile spam. And this is in what is generally considered one of the easiest Kirby games in the entire series.

Three phases of a behind-the-back shooter followed by an entirely new on-foot battle. I forgot how rough it was just to reach the final phase with a decent amount of health, let alone win. Especially considering stuff like the desperation attack at the end that’s somewhat likely to tank your first run, among other things.
I suppose I was just looking at it in terms of strictly the final phase of the fight when I said “true final boss”. That was clearly a mistake.
At least in the case of Soul Melter EX Void Termina, Phase 2 is horrifically easy even on the highest settings of the Ultimate Choice. Star Dream Soul OS doesn’t even have that.
I’d have to compare these two more directly to see which one seems more difficult for myself, but Star Dream Soul OS is almost definitely on par with Soul Melter EX Void Termina in difficulty if not more difficult.

She was also aware of how much I really love Splatoon, and since Marx is the boss of Inkling’s Classic Mode, she kept saying to play Inkling’s Classic Mode once I got the game. So, once I got Ultimate on Christmas Day, and saw Marx, I screamed. The combination of seeing Marx back, in Smash Bros, all the while the Calamari Inkantation, my favorite video game track ever, playing as the theme, I melted. When I first ran into him in World of Light, I was instantly hyped. Marx was one of my most favorite bosses/villains as a kid. And unlike what was common to think at the time, I didn't see him as "oh look he's a backstabber that became the devil", but as an awkward friend who felt left behind by Kirby, as Kirby became more loved by everyone else. I honestly empathized with the guy, since that's how I was with my friends (except, you know, I didn't make a wish on a Shenron-o-clock).
So having that fight in World of Light was such a highlight for me, just ranked below the final-final fight (because that was seriously hype too).
I still have my reservations about Ultimate not being so Ultimate (mostly from being told nearly everything about it before it released), but this fight and the final final fight... And ring dong dang... Made me shut my mouth and just enjoy the darn game.

    But otherwise, nice video
I liked the boss a lot althought it was a bit overdoing it and the animations honestly looked a bit like garbadge by not redesigning the sprite and probably just literally ripping the sprite into a 3D model.

Sure, I agree that all devs need more credit, and consideration when it's given to newer folks [i.e. Kenta Motokura credited as the designer instead of Miyamoto]
However, Sakurai has historically been credited for Marx, and as far as a return to the game series where he is such a huge part of it, I do think a credit to him is fair here.

I don’t think Marx from smash is as good as you say he is, he is missing the lightning arrow attack, not to mention the entirety of Marx Soul. I also don’t like Marx’s model, the color is too pale for Marx, and maybe this is just because of the “Fixing Marx’s Render” video, but Marx’s model is shaped too ovally, and his movement is a bit too stiff overall, I do enjoy the new attacks though, as well as him being more creepy now. I’m glad he’s here, just think they disserviced him, I guess that the electric arrows would go on too long for so characters to avoid damage, and we all know Sakurai dislikes anything he didn’t create relating to Kirby, that includes Marx Soul. Also I noticed that the “evil” leaving Marx’s body looks exactly like how king Dedede and Meta Knight look when they become un-possessed(?) by the dark Jamba hearts in Star allies, so maybe this Marx fight is an unofficial, non canon prequel to Marx becoming a dream friend?

Does anyone else talk about how the music also makes him creepier? The remix of his boss battle music from back in the day makes this boss even creepier as well!

Marx in Star Allies _could_ be the case of helping _just_ to get the bigger threat out of the way, then go back to being evil.
But there's also the possibility he isn't actually there, but a clone conceived by Kirby via the Dream Palace, and whoever Kirby summons is a friend.

I love the Theory on how it can be said that Marx was possessed. When I first fought Marx in WoL not only did I go crazy over my favorite Kirby villain being in the game but also how after you beat him purple demonic like flames leave his body. It made me think the Darkhon(sorry if spelled wrong) possessed him to do his bidding like similarly to Galleem possessing Giga Bowser in WoL. Really makes you think there is truly a demon inside Marx and I believe the next Kirby game that gives him a big role or return of him will emphasize on it to help us have a better vision on how Marx sees things and what he deals with.

Was hoping this would be a breakdown of the actual battle. His attacks, exploits, etc.

Good video, though I don't like the weird interpolation on the Superstar and Superstar Ultra footage.

In Star Allies, he’s being less creepy because he’s pretty much forcing himself to be nice in order to get more food. You can see him almost snap in his waiting animation, and at the end of the DLC mode, he goes back to his evil ways and attacks you in the credits.

You know, when you were talking about Marx in Star Allies. I was honestly surprised you didn't mention his appearance as a boss during the credits of Heroes In Another Dimension. Granted, it is pretty much an exact recreation of his original fight without anything added except he doesn't have the atmospheric background and they simply used a bigger version of his cutesy playable model. I still thought it was at least worth to touch upon. I guess it would be a spoiler to some, but at this point most of those who care enough to finish the new mode have already done so.

Marx is WAY cooler as a boss than he could ever be as a fighter. I was blown away to see him popup at the end of Kirby's classic mode.

An interesting tidbit is that ultimate uses the original marx design rather than his soul form from the true arena. Ultimate marx is super fun for sure but even I like to go back to the soul form battle every once in a while. His soul fight is also creepier than ultimate in my opinion.

I've heard some theories that the creepy compound-eyes thing might be a reference to Miracle Matter (the penultimate boss of Kirby 64).

I can't believe I've played so many kirby games and smash bros games and have never once noticed Marx. If it weren't for all this footage I wouldn't beleive this boss even existed.

I never played superstar or superstar ultra, but marx always looked like a good boss fight, and finding out he was the same in smash ultimate at the start but the finding out he actually had a few new moves was a really cool experience.
I never liked his music though. I still don't think it's too outstanding, but it's better than it's original version.

I always assumed the light that leaves Marx's body at the end of the fight is just him losing his powers. In Super Star he got the power by asking Nova so maybe one of the two deities of Ultimate gave him power.
Though him being posessed would also work in this story.

I was kinda hoping for his terrifying scream and split from the True Arena as his death animation. That ending stuck with me pretty hard.

Marx was my number one pick for a character before ultimate came out (he still is, but I now seriously doubt he will be one). But I gotta say I was nothing but happy the first time I saw him after finishing kirby's classic mode.

Is that me or did you speech speed got somewhat slower? That's kinda nice if it did since I sometimes have some trouble understanding fast talkers.
And yeah I'm glad Superstar Ultra is one of the few Kirby games I've played, just so I could see how faithfully they recreated Marx's boss battle with new creations. However, I don't think Marx is the kind of character that necessarily NEEDS a redemption. He's already some sort of traitor and I think making him just possessed or something would just strip him out of what he's know and like as, a crazy deceptive trickster, I kinda see him as Kirby series' dimentio tbh.
Also, Ultimate really made me realize Smash Bros does NOT care about spoiling! Putting an other game's final boss as a regular boss battle is really something particular and I couldn't see a lot of other series having this audacity!

Hey Spongyoshi! I did try to slow down my cadence more in the past few uploads, as people have brought it up and I think it makes the videos more understandable. Granted, I'm still learning the pacing of it, since I naturally talk fast, but it's something I'm very excited to improve upon this year.
Interesting point about the Smash bosses, there definitely is more of an all-encompassing feel to how they make their bosses compared to the reveals in the origins.
Thanks for checking this one out!
