- In this video I will cover the easy mode battery swap that does not need extra devices installed in your car. Pairing with Leaf Spy pro.
My thanks goes to Dala for hooking me up with the beta testing

Information received later has informed me, that I might have been very lucky with my car year and battery combination.
Do your own research before attempting this!!
Many car and battery combinations might not work with this method and do still require you to add a can-bridge to your car. I have can-bridge installation video on the channel too.
I got the code by talking to dala's ev repairshop who was in contact with the developer. This was a beta test, not sure when it's going to be released to public build.
@@gelisob Thank you for the link with the obd dongle. It arrived to me and IT works with Leaf Spy pro 45.155and 161.
Could You please send to me the 45.159 on an email?please!
I'm in the same situation as you were with a 48 %soh 2017 Leaf.
Thank you
Lots of helpful technical stuff here, and your use of English idioms is exceptional (and funny! Love the CAN bridge pun.)
Been planning to swap in a 62kWh battery, with Dala's remote assistance; it's good to get a different perspective on how to do the swap.
Thank you for making this video, and for having fun with it along the way!
Thank you for the kind words, glad that you liked it.
I envy the 62kwh battery, that will be a real EV then :) Make sure your shocks & springs get upgraded too then, that battery extends out quite a bit. I am also running Dala's can-bridge now. This software only method only works on select vehicle models and with 24 and 30kwh battery as I now heard.
Did you end up doing your battery upgrade?
I’ve just bought a 62kw.hr kit from Yaste in China. Waiting for shipping atm.
@@restfulplace3273 Not yet; I can still get from house to work on an 80% charge, and there are chargers at both places. There's also now a shop in town that will drop a used (but >85%) 40kWh in for about $11K, but they want to use the CAN bridge from EVsEnhanced (not Dala's, boo.) And Nissan are even making noises like they might reconsider selling me a *new* 40 kWh.
You simply MUST tell me about your 62kWh experience...once you have it.
Who's your vendor? Can I look them up and have one shipped to the Untied States? I'm happy to DIY the install, however, I have ethical and reliability issues with Chinese batteries...
However, I had some big life events, too. Mostly good, but very chaotic, and I'm still trying to keep it all managed. I might be trying to design and sell a kit for turning a Leaf into a Vector (the unbuilt WJ variant.)
@@stevejordan7275 I bought direct from Yaste. They are on TH-cam and most Nissan forums have discussed them at some point
Great job buddy, someday the 1st generation LEAF will get the respect it deserves. It's a solid electric car that with a much lower amount of money than the other electric vehicles out there can be updated and range greatly improved. The original 24kWh LEAF is still good for more than 90% of people and their uses as well.
(Side note) I call the 1st generation LEAFs with the foot brake 1.5 Gen since Nissan calls the 2017 to current LEAFs 2nd Gen.
Fantastic video! And I loved the humor!!
Hoping that eventually someone would see the market in making after-market replacement battery packs for the fleet of Nissan Leafs already out there. Nissan Leafs are almost unique in that their battery packs are so modular and easily swapped. The only other comparable EV are Nio cars but those are only in China.
Just got Leafspy Pro - glad to hear that it will pair my battery in the future when it hopefully becomes easily available.
There are already such startups happening, making custom batteries for leafs. I have seen them being built in Ukraine and Russia, i'm sure there are more.
Here's one such offering: li.energo-e.ru/nissanleaf
They use 18650 elements, i've seen several using lg 63 cells too.
What an excellent video ... and I enjoyed the humor! Thank you.
I want to swap my 2013 24 kW to 40 kW, You give me motivation
do it :) But be aware, that you will most likely need to get a can-bridge to pair it to your car. Also If your car does not have foot-actuated hand-brake then there's some body work with the battery brackets too.
@@gelisob yes ive spoke with dala and yes its a 🦶 brake 😂
Thanks for your video Gelisob, and greets from Białystok, Poland :)
Hello
Thanks for sharing. I realise this is an older video. As you may already know, Dala has made the can bridge open source now. All credit to him for that. I was considering swapping my old batteries for ones available on Ali- express now for Nissan Leafs. I believe they are a VW ID3 or 4 battery. Interested on your thoughts on this and whether it might work ok. They say they provide details on installation but it would be an expensive flop if I was unable to make them talk to the Leaf. Cheers for now, Neil.
Hey Neil. Sourcing batteries from china is always a very risky and complicated endeavor. I do not know what batteries you are talking about but most sellers are selling cells that are for some valid reason discarded from official use. That can be fine for some offgrid home battery projects but with vehicles it gets dicey fast.
I do not know where you are situated but I would recommend putting your time and effort into something that gives you extra money and find local or nearby sellers that will sell you 30/40/62kwh leaf battery that has not been used much. Dala bridge stuff is indeed open source but do think long and hard about how much time you must sink into it to get usable results out and with what cost. Might be easier to just go pay Dala the 150 and have working thing to move on with.
But if it's a side project and not your essential vehicle then sure, research long and hard the chinese battery seller and dont buy from someone you cant find history and forum threads about :)
Well done! Very informative video as well! Congradulations!
Many thanks for the video! Looking forward for that Leafspy Pro functionality!
Very informative
Glad you think so!
You should start an ASMR channel ... with that voice!!👍👍👍🇩🇪
Great video, it's fantastic to see LeafSpy will soon have a battery pairing feature. I wonder if this will also work for Nissan e-NV200?
I know it has been successfully tested on at least one e-nv200 from 2014
nice to know that you can put the 30 battery on a 24 car without modifications, i have a 24 system and a 30 battery :)
also important, that it is gen2 car, if it's gen1 then it needs modifications.
2015 so all ok
@@CrAzYDr1veR bit isn't it true that the 30kwh degrade faster ?
i have no idea
Thank you for short video full of useful information. I have 2012 Leaf with swapped 30kWh battery but I think I didn't get the best battery because my car doesn't go over 150km on one charge. How many km-s yours does now?
You can check your battery with a 10$ odb2 dongle and free app leafspy. (KONNWEI OBD2 ELM327, lime color)
Also the bars next to estimated km's show the battery health state, still got 12?
Leaf uses ~18kwh for 100km, less in summer, more in winter. New 30kwh batt has 28kwh usable. This means new 30kwh should do exacly 150km average with one batt. Maybe someone left you with wrong impression that it should do a lot more. For me it's fine, I can cross my country with two 15minute stops.
@@gelisob Thanks for the reply! I am using Leaf Spy pro already, wouldn't imagine driving Leaf without it. Yes many 30kWh Leaf sellers gave me the impression that it does over 160km without problem in any weather conditions. Then my battery is fine and I need to add extra pack for longer trips.
@@Ruudi05 well they are not lying if they mean you drive only city speeds and never turn on heating :) Then it does 160km in pretty much most weather conditions.
Wow, didn't knew it's possible to use car without CANbridge.
Just have to install diesel heater and range in winter will be close similar to summer :)
Diesel heater in electric car? don't be weird sir :D Cabin heating will not heat up the cold battery anyway, so it would not help that much. Also this car has heatpump. If you want to get extra range from less heating, you can use some of those old battery modules for hours of heat, no need to burn anything :)
@@gelisob diesel heater are quite popular, especially in colder regions in Russia, Ukraine etc. countries.
Do you understand Russian? I could give some links to videos with the information if interested
Diesel cars are also quite popular, does not mean we should not try EV's :) If i was looking for an easy way out, i would have not bought EV and messed with battery change, eh? :D No diesel in my EV, it will be batteries.
@@gelisob Ok good that you have heatpump but how many minutes do you think it works under -10C ? My experience with 24, 30 and even 40kWh loaner cars shows that max one hour it works then heatpump system stops giving heat and PTC heater takes over and you lose range. PTC heater under dashboard is a little better because older Leafs coolant heater system loses heat when heated liquid is pumped through hoses in the electric motor room. So in this system and with older battery diesel or petrol heater would help to get longer trips done!
@@Ruudi05 @gelisob yea, I understand the Diesel is not the best to use, if you think of greenery aspect. I'm still thinking to put it or not for mine car.
But the results from Ukraine guys testing different leafs with/without diesel heater clearly shows the advantage of diesel heater :)
th-cam.com/video/2jnFkveQDFU/w-d-xo.html
can't find that video anymore, but saw that one guy has in boot old Leaf battery modules + 2kW inverter + electric heater (something like Defa Termini), so that gives him the possibility to drive the car without using heater for around 2h.
@gelisob, Hi! Could you share please a names of scrap yards in Estonia, where they can be available Nissan Leaf batteries? I couldn't find any of them (maybe I should just call them instead of trying to find it in the Internet)
Estonia is too little place for any good advice in that regard. You might be hunting for very long time along with others who try to get it locally. If you want to find it yourself then you better expand your search to latvia-lithuania-norway. Or if you value your time more then go to facebook and look for estonian ev group and contacts for local guy Kaljo who has batteries in Tallinn and can sell you one. He has contacts and gets them from nearby countries.
@@gelisob Thank you! It's very valuable information for me!
How did you generate the 6 digit pairing code that you entered into LeafSpy?
You don't need this code any more.
@@pashko90 Thanks, I've upgraded my battery using this LeafSpy battery pairing method th-cam.com/video/RmzlNWBnZGQ/w-d-xo.html

Do you have a positiv feedback from some one?
How much is the battery swap on those cars?
Hi there where did you get pairing code through beta testing in LeafSpy or through a different source
it was through the beta testing. I'm not up to date how they currently handle all that or is it now even more automated into public version.
but beware, it only works on certain combination of car year and battery capacity, not all.
@@gelisob my car is 2013 Nissan Leaf with foot well parking brake. It has the early lizard pack. Hard to find battery swap in North America, is there a lot of 30/40kwh packs over in europe
@@evliving5495 try checking out vendors listed on this webpage map: nissanleafbatteryreplacement.com/
Changed my battery the only issue I have is the timed climate control doesn't work now if you could help me get this feature back that would be great
Hello my friend, when installing a 50 kw Alcatel cell for a 2015 LEAF vehicle, for example, how to make a way to read it correctly by adjusting the 24 kw meter to read well
maybe it's a language barrier thing but by what you wrote, it does not seem like you understand the complexity of the situation you are describing. If you are planning to take 24kwh leaf battery and swap out cells inside it, you are still having 24kwh bms talking to the car. I can not give advice or guidance how to reprogram nissan leaf BMS. I have not heard this to be done at all. Please do not set yourself or your family or your house in fire. Making a safe battery internals that can withstand thousands of kilometers of shaking and bumping, is not a trivial thing. All the Leaf fires i've heard about have been caused by people tinkering with their battery and trying to change it.
Wowww what... Maybe get w Dala's ev repair, yt
not everyone has the tools or lifts to replace these, which are heavy.

Good point; there is one TH-cam video where a guy in Florida used two furniture dollys, which looks like a low-cost option. ☮️
Is this feature included in the Leaf Spy pro app now?Does someone has new feedback on this issue?
I got a 30 kwh Leaf and a 40 kwh pack on the way so I need to know more about this in order to do the proper steps!
If it 's included I'm allmost certain that it will work!I 'm not bothered about the quirks"!!
So please, YOU Leaf lovers out there give some feedback! Thank you!
I have had no reason to look into it after that but i was informed, that this feature works for very limited set of car+battery configurations at the time. I got lucky. I was told that 40kwh packs were not able to be paired like this. If this has not changed, you should take into account that you will need a can bridge for pairing the battery to the car.
@@gelisob since the 30 kwh Leaf pack has the same wiring I 'm thinking there is big chance that it will work!
The can bridge it will add another 500Euro to the total cost,so it worths trying
I think the biggest problem is finding 40kwh battery, almost impossible or so expensive you'd rather just update to a newer leaf
That is true, specially at pandemic time when less drivers are out and about. I was looking for 40kwh too but a year passed and my 24kwh was really weak, so I changed my plan to 30kwh and I can live with that, since it was almost half the cost :)
😆
