Thanks for a great video which helped when I was doing a couple of installs with the Funny Playing 3.1 kit. I decided to install the 32.215M crystal in the X1 position on the mod driver board when doing the 1ASIC install to avoid any graphics glitches.
Noice! I love how you've commented before this has even processed for HD ahahaha. Also, I'd definitely recommend you grab yourself an everdrive GG for it =D
@@NewRetroRepairYeahhh, I have notifications switched on :D I actually have a few Game Gear games to play as I have my original Game Gear still (which incredibly still works fine) but yeah I will need to invest in a flash cart for sure!
Any reason why you didn't use the set of header pins on the lower side of the board? Those look to be the exact same signals as the pads in the upper area.
Yeah you're correct. The main reason I didn't is because I used the v 2-0b board and those connectors weren't labelled on the PCB or on the aliexpress vendor page or in the instructions for that matter. It looks like on the V3.1 board those pins are now labelled. If I'd known what they were for, I'd have used 'em. Mind you, there's another pin header that's unlabelled "P1" on the upper left hand side of the board. I've no idea what that's for either.
@@NewRetroRepair I received mine, which ended up being a 2.0B board, despite the page saying 3.1, and ohmed them out. The pinout is exactly the same as what's shown on the aliexpress page, so I did all of mine to those headers, except where it didn't make sense (CLK routes better up front).
@@zaxour Nice! Good stuff. How'd the install go? Hopefully the install went without a hitch and you got that old GG back up and running =) It's a pretty nice mod for the price all things considered imho. Also I'll keep those headers in mind next time I do one of these installs. Thanks for the heads up.
Good morning, congratulations for the excellent work... I installed the lcd clone kit and initially it worked slowly... then I installed the x1 oscillator to try to solve the problem and now, white screen oscillating... I tried to remove the oscillator and the problem continues ...what could it be? game gear model (PCB 837-9130 / 837-9024 / 837-8560 (1 ASIC)
need help with this, I have tried installing this on two game gears, but all I'm getting is a multi-colour static screen and the sound does not work? I have the 3.1 PCB, cant find any help in this issue
If the screen is not connected (just disconnect the power to the LCD controller board) do you get game audio? If you get audio it's likely a problem with your wiring. If you don't get audio then your GG's aren't booting games. If they aren't booting games you'll have to do some fault finding/disgnostics
@@NewRetroRepair I've tried rewiring the game gear and retried on another game gear, both game gears were working fully before the upgrade, I have contacted the seller on ali express and gave them photos i think this kit I got is defective as I have tried this numerous times

I haven't personally needed to install an oscillator. Though with that said, if you need to install one it needs to be installed on the 3.1 board, not the Game Gear itself.

Would you recommend a ceramic capacitor kit for recapping or the original electrolytic capacitors? Also, do you have a link for where you purchased this kit?
I just use standard electrolytic capacitors. That said, SMD ceramic caps are easier to install and theoretically won't ever fail. I'm not sure that I'd recommend the kit versions as they're often all the same value capacitance and voltages, whereas on the GG the values for capacitance and voltage vary a lot. I'm not really an electronics engineer though, and they seem to work for most people that use them. So why not? Honestly, just got whatever you feel comfortable getting. All the caps I use are loose caps. They're not from a specific kit. Also, to get these LCD's just search Game Gear LCD on AliExpress. Or Funny playing game gear LCD.
@@NewRetroRepair How did you end up securign the screen to the motherboard? Yeah that's exactly why the newer revisions have that. It's still odd that units are affected by the glitching so randomly with those kits though.

Mortoffgames.com sells the cap kits, glass and other supplies. I just installed my first LCD and I used double sided sticky tape.
Yeah I usually use double sided tape myself too. It's a good way to keep it held firm.
How did you solder the board to the main board?!

They're a direct clone. They're exactly the same. At least they were when I made this video.
