I’ve also found that the throttle body, throttle position sensors need to be “relearned”. TH-cam “relearn throttle body”. Basically, remove both negative and positive battery terminals, touch the positive and negative together ( off of battery) to discharge stored energy which will clear memory. If you have a multimeter you can confirm no voltage between positive and negative cables otherwise it is suggested to hold both cables together for ten minutes. Then reinstall battery cables to battery. Turn car on and let idle for ten plus minutes to get to running temperature in order for computer to relearn variables through sensors. Now drive your vehicle normally driving up to high gear allowing the computer to learn throttle positions during operation. For us manual transmission people, not too low or too high, just right, for the computer to learn proper shift variables. Tech the heck out of these cars.
I had the battery disconnected for several hours so it could be that that also reset the computer. Thank you for the great tip though. I and I’m sure several others will appreciate it. I didn’t do this procedure but I’ve had others ask me about how to reset the tb.
@@OmarsGarage So when you say you disconnected the terminals. Did you disconnect from the battery which taking the wheel or did you disconnect from under the hood??. I have an 2012 dodge avenger and i replaced my throttle body and i went to start and warm my car up because of the cold and ESC light came back on again while my car was warming up so i had to turn my car for it to go off then back on but then my engine light stayed on.
Laisha Baxter i removed the positive and negative from the battery. The engine light stayed on until I drove it about 15 miles so the computer could relearn it.
Thank youuuuuuuuuu!!! Just had my 2008 Patriot towed home today for this exact same issue. The part is currently $60 on Amazon and it looks like Hubby will be tackling this fix in the next week or so. I still love my Patriot just as much as I did back when we drove it off the lot brand new (with the lifetime power train warranty) back in 2007.
@@carlosmercado9157 hubby finally had time to look at it today. Throttle body is definitely the problem and he ordered a new one from mopar. He cracked into the broken one and a few of the teeth on the plastic gears had chipped/worn away. Also, a bolt was missing…possibly allowing air to leak in and cause the engine to run a little rough. I can’t wait to have my wee jeep running again.
Thanks so much for sharing! We towed our 2008 Patriot to Florida with 187000 miles, and it has got the same problem yours had. Dealership basically told us to drive it off a cliff and buy a new one! About ready too, but it would be great if we could just fix it for a couple hundred bucks!! Gonna watch your next video! Thanks again!!
THANKS OMAR!!! This video and the one of you installing the throttle body has saved my life!!! Easy as pie and now my jeep runs BETTER THAN NEW. I'd pay you if I could 8)
Thank You. I, like a lot of others, have the same problem. I researched the heck out of this situation and it seems to be a big problem with Jeep/Chrysler cars. This video confirms all my research. Waiting on the part. A lot cheaper that way. I will follow up with my results.
It worked perfectly! Disconnected the battery. Replaced the throttle body. Started the car (stilling running rough until it settles) let it idle for ten minutes. Shut car off, counted to ten, turned key but not start engine, let dash indicator lights set and go off, push accelerator pedal to the floor, hold it and count to ten and lightning bolt indicator and engine light will turn off, release pedal, turn key back off, count to ten turn car on and drive for about twenty minutes. Once I turned the car on for the final drive, it purred like a brand new car. I bought a non-OEM throttle body for $40 and free shipping from EBay and it was a 40 minute install as opposed to a $1,000+ dealer job. I only take my car in for new tires and alignment. To have any other service done is a serious rip off.
I just had same symptoms with steady malfunction indicator light and electronic throttle control light flashing along with a few other lights on. 2012 Jeep Compass had limp mode only with Reverse gear worse than in Drive. I was prepared to have vehicle towed as live on remote island and mechanic is on other side. The mechanic gave me some free advice to try first: Disconnect car battery, wait 20 minutes, hold 2 wires together, and then reconnect battery to see if that resets things. Before I even did that, I tried the car again and it started properly, all the lights went off except the malfunction light, but the car had power again. Will make appointment to get it properly checked but in the meantime will try the battery disconnect if it acts up again. I'm lucky that the only mechanic around is trustworthy and does not rip folks off. I've used his shop for years and have always had good service (and I'm not blond or young...). Thanks for posting. It helped me talk about the issue properly on the phone to the mechanic!
Yeah I have a local mechanic that I trust also and when I don’t have the time to do the work myself I take my cars over to him. I’ve always enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together so it’s usually fun for me.
Hey, exact same problem with me, 2016 4×4 jeep patriot 2.4 litre high altitude, the dealership said transmission issue and asking for $4000, should I replace throttle body ? Do it needs programming after change ?
Thank you soooo much!!! My daughters 2014 patriot was doing the same thing and the scan said implausible data??? Which lead me to believe the pcm was going bad, thought I had a bad coil pack but watched your video, found a etc on Amazon for $30 just installed it and it’s running like a top!!! Ty for posting this video and ty for the help. You are awesome!!!
I'm having this same issue!! Sad thing is my tools are at my shop so this will be fun. Appreciate you making a video on this! I'm sure this is my issue
@@OmarsGarage yes, i have to do that with mine. its like by restarting the car you reset it, but it happens a lot when the temperature goes below -15 celcius. ill be getting it changed soon....
Same issue but no check engine light. Mechanic at worked scanned it but no codes. I have an appointment with the dealership. I think it's the throttle body but pep boys says it's the computer. Your video is so helpful.
Honestly, the throttle body is cheap enough that it may be worth it to replace it to rule that out. Link is in the description. Should be around $60. Keep us updated if you figure it out so it can help others .
Took it to a mechanic and he scanned it. 2 codes came up. P2110 and C121C. He thought it probably was the air intake. He cleaned and put on new gasket. Codes came up again. He installed a new throttle body and codes were gone. Been driving fine since then.
Same issues here minus engine light a few years ago, replaced throttle body and no issues since.......till yesterday.....doing the SAME thing it did before. Idk what the deal with this Jeep is but I really wish ,you wife hadn't have picked it out as her new vehicle.
There are some good ones out there but I guess you need to read the reviews. I just looked up this particular dealer and most online reviews have them at 2 out of 5 stars.
I just finished this. I removed the top(left) of the airbox and the battery and didn't regret it. BE CAREFUL WITH THE AIR TEMP SENSOR! It is delicate and brittle plastic after 10 years. Ask me how I know... Moving the upper radiator hose did help and it only drips a little, you can top it off with cheap distilled water without altering the ratio in any significant way. The gaskets are not included because Chrysler says they are reusable...I bought a new one anyway too 😉 It took 5 trips around my 1sq mile block to run well so Don't Panic of it doesn't start acting right immediatly, the computer needs a minute to get the new voltage range.
This same thing happened to my 2016 Jeep Compass in sept. Took it to dealer and i think they reset the computer b/c all the lights were off when they checked. They told me to drive it for 60mi and if it came back on to come back but if it doesn’t, then it was prob a fluke. Nothing ended up happening until this morning (October 17th) - same situation. I bought mine used - I’m the 2nd owner. The first person who had it before me bought it new and had it as a lease and that person took care of it too - i saw the carfax. It was still under warranty when i bought it and i put a 6 yr bumper to bumper on it too just in case and glad i did. So I’m going back to the dealer today. It sounds like they made you wait intentionally so they could money grab you. It also looks like the dealer you went to isn’t exactly honest w/ all those mysterious fees. I took pictures and a video of it happening this morning to me so i can show them. I suspect a throttle body issue as well.
The dealer ended up doing a pcm flash - they said that the computer needed an update. Does that sound like this fixed the problem to you? All the lights are off and so far it’s driving fine but I really wonder if that’s really all it needed was a PCM flash. What do you think? It did not cost me anything
Lost in the Clouds the first two times I took te car in to the dealership this is what they told me they did. Eventually it did fail completely though. That’s when they told me to replace it once it was out of warrantyS
Exactly what happened to my 2016 Jeep Patriot Latitude I was in a wreck where someone hit me from the front and destroyed my whole front end and after the body shop fixed the whole front end body wise and the radiator and other parts that where destroyed in the wreck. When I went to go pick up my vehicle I noticed every light on the dashboard was lit up and even though the vehicle drove alright I wasn't going to take it like that so they took it to the local (Pasadena Tx Bayway Jeep and Chrysler dealership) and they kept my vehicle for almost 2 weeks and finally said it needed a brand new Tipm (Totally integrated Power Module) so since it was still covered under warranty they had to cover it even though I thought it should have been covered under the other ladys insurance that hit me but the Dealer was adamant about it NOT being caused by the wreck which did not make any sense to me because I had absolutely no electrical problems prior to her hitting me, but ok what ever as long as my vehicle got fixed and I didn't have to pay for it myself...I agreed. So they replaced the Tipm as well as my windshield wiper motor that the first shop overlooked as well. They told me my truck was ready to be picked up so I went and picked it up and it drove pretty well for the first few days and then all the sudden all the lights on the dash came back on lighting up like a Christmas tree....!!!! So I took it back to the dealer for them to look at it and they told me I wasn't getting the power voltage I needed from my battery, but they informed me that my warranty had just expired about 600 miles prior to me going in, but they suggested I purchase a new battery from them which of course was a Mopar Battery that cost me $165 plus they said I needed a new battery tray which cost me $89 and a battery hold down strap which cost me $26 and they assured me that all this would fix my Patriot so I reluctantly purchased all of them from the dealer and drove it for about 2 to 3 weeks and one day all the lights came back on the dash! By this time I was Irate and fed up with the dealership but I took it back in just for them to not be able to diagnose anything because of course my truck didn't act up while they had it there for the 3 days they kept it. So I was basically fed up and decided to just deal with the lights going off and on my dash as long as it didn't effect my driving so I have been driving it almost 5-6 months and I just started having issues with it dying while I drive it twice it happened on the freeway and thank god I was able to coast it to the shoulder and turn the key off and re crank it and it would drive fine for a while until the red lightning bolt warning light would flash on the dash as well as the traction control light then the truck would slow down to barely a few mph and then completely die out and I would have to re start it again after a few minutes and it has been starting up fine so far but when I researched all the symptoms everything points back to a faulty throttle body sensor or the throttle body assembly. Which I think it should still be covered my warranty even though it expired but since the dealership NEVER fixed my vehicle correctly while it was under warranty I wish there was a way to make them take responsibility for it but I know they won't! Any advice, welcomed?
That’s exactly the same thing that happened to me where I took it in and they couldn’t find the issue. I took it 3 times and the third time it was out of bumper to bumper warranty though it was still under powertrain warranty. They did not want to cover it. I purchased the new throttle body for u ser $100 and installed it myself. A couple years later and the issue never came back. The dealer wanted $900 to replace the part that cost me less than a $100 and only took me about 30 minutes to replace. I don’t know if this is the same issue you are having because it did have an accident, but if you are having the same loss of power symptoms then it may be the same thing.
I'm so glad I saw this video. My 2015 patriot is doing the exact same thing and I was about to take it to get it looked at where they charge $120 just to look at it! I know nothing about cars but after this video, I'm almost positive that's what's wrong with mine too.
Lea Ann Schmittou check the connectors for the throttle body just in case one has gotten loose and is causing this issue first. Check out my install video if you want to take on the project yourself.
Thanks! This just happened to my 2015 jeep compass yesterday. ugh. I didnt plug it in. canadian winter. my scanner read U0401...it may just be a dead battery but heck the throttle body symptoms may be the same. great video. thanks for your help!
My 2014 Patriot Latitude did same thing. Easy fix , turn on ignition to on position and wait for check engine light to flash then goes to solid red not blinking press gas pedal to floor release gas pedal slowly and turn off then turn jeep over. Problem fixed.. it worked for me. Not necessarily a bad throttle body.
Currently replacing mine afterbirth bought it from someone that thought the transmission would have to be replaced. Glad the throttle body was cheaper 🥰
If your throttle position sensor fails these lights will come on and it can affect braking also - ebrake is disabled for some dumb reason. Engine shake is caused because the electronic distribution doesn't know what to do - again likely caused by a bad sensor. There are warning signs of engine wonkyness a few days or weeks before this, when that happens - clean the throttle and/or air idle control valve but my list of codes only mentioned throttle position, throttle control motor, firing irregularities, and O2 sensor. But yeah it's basically the throttle.
Good grief. I have a 2010 jeep patriot and i actually just paid 900 and got it replaced at a shop that has a 4.5 on google with 250 reviews and a month later (today) it broke again. I am not happy. We need to get a class action lawsuit together against the dealership for doing this to us and stealing untold amounts of cash from people. I wonder just how much money has been stolen from folks.
I’ve had this same issue. I have a 2015 Jeep Patriot, I’ve had to replace it twice since getting my car around 40,000 miles and it’s having the same issue yet again! My car is now at 75,000 miles.
Are you replacing it with an OEM part or with an aftermarket. I have a link in the description for the part I used. I hadn’t occurred again since I replaced it.
Same issue!! Throttle Body!! advice needed..... 2014 Sport, 39000 miles.. only issue, and it is fixed... do i sell while i can? or trust that it works now?? Jeep didn't "find the issue " until the warranty was out! Kinda creepy how similar this video was. Thanks Omar... great vid
In my opinion these throttle bodies should have been a recall. It comes up in almost all Chrysler vehicles since they share the same manufacturer of the throttle bodies. I found it really suspicious that while under warranty they didn’t find it on two occasions, then they want to charge $900 to repair it. SInce I changed the TB it has not acted up so I would keep the car. If it happens again then you know what the issue is and maybe switch to a different throttle body manufacturer. The only "good" thing is that when it goes bad you can still drive the car even if in limp mode.
I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.7L that did the same thing. Brought it to have it checked out and replaced the throttle body. Check engine light came back on the very next day.
Michael Joseph what year is your car. Someone else posted that the OEM throttle bodies had a high failure rate. May need to replace with aftermarket. Check out my other video where I replace the throttle body myself. It may be something in addition to the tb though.
@@OmarsGarage Hey, thank you for your quick response. My Grand Cherokee is a 2008 3.7L 4x4. I replaced throttle body because it was doing exactly what your mother in law's Patriot was doing. Runs great now, just can't get the engine light to turn off. It was off for about a half hour after I swapped out the throttle body but then came back on. I'm at my wit's end with this vehicle. I've dumped a ton of money into it in recent years . Sometimes the only thing that I think will help is a gallon of gas and a match.. 😁
Michael Joseph have you used an obdii scanner to check the codes. There may be another sensor or something else that is also bad. Or maybe one of the connectors needs to be pushed in further.
I’m having the same problem for my 2014 Jeep Patriot. Runs and idles rough. Red lightning bolt is on & traction control light is on. The car won’t accelerate past 20 mph. I ran the check engine light & it came back with the code U0401. Do you think changing the throttle body will fix this issue?
Mine does the same but it has a fuel pressure sensor code that keeps coming on and this vehicle didn't even have that equipped on it. Any answers on that would be great. 2014 Jeep compass 2.4l what could that sensor be?
Asshole Dealerships cant trust them or you regular mechanic not to try and rip you off. ASSHOLES. Its people like you bro that are the real help in these situations. cheers for your time and vid dude.
Same thing happened to me! The same EXACT thing happened yesterday night but fun fact this morning autozone used a scanner on my car to get tho codes and after I left and turn the car off and on (about 3 full trips) the signals are all gone and almost immediately after the scanner machine was used the physical symptoms like loss of power and jolting completely stopped too... idk if the scanner had something to do with it or what but I’ve got until Monday to figure it out on my own because I go and see a mechanic
It may start to happen more and more often if it’s failing. I would try cleaning the throttle body first and if that resolved it then you are good. If not, you may need to replace it later on down the road. Good luck 👍
Listen it’s either the throttle body, or it’s the computer, you can buy the computers already programmed for any car you just look up the make year and it is your conductor to your engine transmission
I had the same issue, where the lightning bolt and malfunction light indicator comes on, once it does i can't accelerate the speed more than 30 mph. To get rid of the lightning bolt also known as Electronic Throttle Control(ETC), I would turn the vehicle off and on. Then the ETC would disappear. Took it to the mechanic, they replaced the throttle, drove it the same day and it came back on. Second diagnostic at the mechanic, gas pedal issue. The resistors are damaged and are not reporting the proper message to the central unit, thats why the ETC warning sign comes on. So they replaced the gas pedal to a new one. Again drove it the same day, got the same issue. I'm currently on that status, heading back to the mechanic this Friday for more check up.....
This same issue is happening with my 2015 Patriot. I've owned the car for nearly 10 years and have never had any issues with it. Now that it has 131k miles on it, this issue is arising. Maybe the throttle body has gone bad over time and has reached its lifecycle? Not sure. But I dropped it off with my mechanic today and they are looking at it and say they will probably have to replace the throttle body. Looks like it's going to run me around $1,000 to get it replaced.
Might be able to do it yourself, I did mine in this video. Chrysler Jeep Patriot Throttle Body Install. Limp Mode and Rough Idle th-cam.com/video/7Oa4zl6UkCU/w-d-xo.html
they did the same thing in medford oregon. it was the exact same issue you were having but they also needed to change out the o2 censors. Thanks for the videos man, i'll just replace mine AGAIN. Never buy a jeep patriot. they are garbage vehicles and i still owe 10,500 on mine.
Thanks for the comment. Other than the throttle body we haven’t had any other issues. They are no frill cars, but I agree that I would never buy one just from how we were treated by the service center.
Jessica Eso ours acted up every once in a while. The good thing is that you can still drive the car even when it acts up though only at about 20 miles an hour. I would hold off but if it happens often then it doesn’t hurt to just go ahead and replace it.
Okay! I just bought it in July but it is used and just hit 61K. It did have an oil change the day before so I'm not sure if maybe that could have also triggered something? I'm just hoping it doesn't happen while I'm driving on the highway! Thanks for doing these videos! 😄
Mine only has done this twice while starting it up. When i turn it off and back on its fine though.. and the lightning bolt goes away, engine light stays on for a little while and then goes away too @OmarsGarage
I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 and im having the same issue, but I have taken it to a mechanic and they supposedly fixed it, but the problem has yet to be resolved any clue of why this is still happening?
I have a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee doing this EXACT same thing, I bought it from someone back in November of 2018 and after a few weeks the ETC came on briefly when on highway but I didn’t feel any issues, the light would turn off and not come back on for a while unless I was on highway. Last few days I’ve noticed it come on a lot more often and now with the tracks control light, loss of acceleration, can’t go past 20mph, everything works fine after turning car off and back on. But it’s only been three days since it’s started doing this. My brothers aren’t 100% it’s the throttle body and want me to take it in but I really don’t want to end up paying $800 for a $150 part my brothers could install. (They live two hours from me so they can’t exactly come look ASAP) was wondering your opinion on it?
KATRINAMELISSA it could be starting to fail, but if you can still get around I would order the part and have them come down on a weekend to change it. It’s 11 years old now so changing it out may be a good precaution regardless.
Though the position of the TB will be different in your car, the procedure to replace it should be the same. Check to make sure all the plugs are clipped in well before replacing the throttle body. Some people have had similar issues with a loose connector. I have video on my channel replacing mine.
Maybe you can help me I have a 2007 Jeep Patriot I just put a new throttle body in it I put a brand new battery in it I put in a new O2 sensors in it it started up just fine then there's no lights when I put the reader on it but the problem is that every time I try to start it now the throttle body light with the lightning bolt and the battery and oil light and the check engine light flashes and it doesn't start and when I try to rub it or try to crank it more the starter starts going like I'm cranking it too much I replace the starter as well I just don't know what else I need to do to get the car started and running
Have you checked to see if maybe you have a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. Could be that gas is not getting to the engine. So it just cranks, but never starts right?
Thanks dude for this.. happened to me yesterday out of no where.. ran fine all day and then was in wal mart for 20 min and boom... electric light, traction control, engine light, power acts all slow but it’s not starting. It’s still sitting there actually.. hah. Trying to figure out what’s going on and came across this. Thanks for the video and help man. Much appreciated!
If it’s not starting at all it may be a battery. In my case it still started it just ran in limp mode. I have a video on my channel on how to check the battery if that turns out to be it. When you turn the ignition on all the dash lights come on.
@@OmarsGarage yeah you'tr right.. it was a battery issue.. actually replaced the terminal in the positive and she fired right up! Gotta love cheap fixes...
@@OmarsGarage Hey Omar I had a low voltage code pop up on my patriot, I had actually turned the ignition and had the red bolt pop up once and scared the shit out of me , but the car runs smooth can this be a battery issue?
I have replaced the throttle body and I still get the warning lights (lighting bolt and check engine light) only comes on randomly and then goes away. It drives fine but not sure why the earring lights still coming on. I’ll try to recalibrate it and see what happens. Thanks for the video
Sometimes it takes time for the computer to relearn the new throttle body on its own. I know we had lights on for about 30 miles of driving before it went away. Keep us updated.
My 2008 Chrysler town and country does this sometimes and if while driving it happens, turn key off then on again still in drive and it will start and go back to normal. Mostly only does it on mine while sitting at idle
Hi omar, first off thank you so much for making this video! yea i had the same problem a little over a year ago ( October 2018 ) ( i took a picture of the codes i got from odb scanner) u0401 - invalid data recieved from ecm/pcm a u0100 - lost communication with ecm/pcm a p2173 - throttle actuator control system high ? airflow detected i thought it was the throttle body as well, so i went and bought the part to replace it. i also bought a new air filter just in case that wasn't the problem Luckily when i replaced the air filter the car started to act normally, UNTIL one year later (November 2019) the problems resurfaced the car started having issue throttling and no power. the check engine light went on again, i'm going to check for codes and update you
Let me know if it’s the same codes. Also check all the cables to make sure nothing has come loose. What brand Throttle body did you replace the original one with?
@@OmarsGarage hi omar, its kinda late where i live ill try to update you tomorrow on the codes, to be honest, i have never done any work on my car (novice) and wasn't sure if the problem was the throttle body. i bought the same one you recommended in your other video but haven't changed it because the car worked fine when i changed the car filter i have the same symptoms as you periodically the car will lose power and all the lights will flash, not sure if the p2173 code is related to the throttle body or not.
Hi, my dodge caliber 2008 has the same symptoms, its sluggish and cannot move, but it jas no any code relating to Tps, instead it has transmission code, does throttle issue cause transmission codes to appear?
Does the car not move at all? If you are getting the same lights on the dash then it could definitely be it. The part is cheap enough and easy enough to change that personally I would try that first. If the car will not move the. It’s definitely something else
Hi. After replacing the throttle body. Has the car been running smoothly? Mines is currently doing the same exact thing. Apparently it’s quite common in type of car. Dealership her in Miami is charging me 1265 😩
Christelabella bella it has been running smoothly and hasn’t had any issues after replacing it. Did they diagnose it as a bad throttle body? If they did then get it replaced. The dealership here quoted me $895 to replace it. My next video actually shows me replacing it myself for $200 I think it was.
Yes. They did. I saw that video shortly after watching this one. I’m going to bug my brother to do it for me. He has experience with cars plus your video is very detailed. Thank you for posting.
My jeep patriot 2014 2.4 has aproblem guys i dont know what to do😢 it has no error codes and no engine light or anything of that sort nor does it idle rough but when driving the gears shift slower then normal and the big problem i have is that it does not want to exceed 80miles and rpm is stuck at 3000 and if i floor it the rpm will go to 4000 but the speed will remain the same and engine light will come on flashing . Pls help anyone
I have that light in the middle on and abs light I believe but I think that's from me changing my clockspring with a cheapy one that didn't include an angle sensor
I have a 2002 Lexus Gs430 and this just started happening to me. Did research and it could have been 39 different issues and after I changed the spark plugs the check engine light went off for all of 3 minutes then flicked back on. I'll cross my fingers and hope it's just the throttle body because I'm having these exact issues with my car.
@@OmarsGarage Well none of the basic things were working so I started pulling my motor apart. It ended up being an easier fix because some time in the past, rodents actually started chewing through my knock sensor wiring and THAT'S all it ended up being. I replaced the wiring and also replaced my power steering hose as it began having a small leak from the power steering reservoir. She runs like new again!
Due to all the sensors and electronics cars are more sensitive to weather especially temp swings with humidity why driving early hours see smore issues
hey Omar pretty good vid but my daughters bf has an 09 Jeep patriot with similar issues it shudders and stalls limp mode etc so I did this procedure only to still have the same problems I am a former mechanic of 25yrs any other ideas? what it may be?
Bill S have you tried reseating the connectors for the throttle body and the maf? The mass airflow sensor could also be a culprit. What codes are you getting on OBDII?
@@OmarsGarage the original code(s) were P0303 and P0507 even before I saw the video I would go with basics 1st new plugs then I saw this video and felt had all the same exact issues so went with throttle body
Try this procedure to have the computer relearn the new throttle body. 1). Turn ignition to Run, but do not start engine. 2). Wait for all lights to turn off. 3). Over the course of 15 seconds, slowly depress the throttle all the way to the floor. 4). Over the next 15 seconds, slowly let the throttle out in the same manner. 5.) Start car and drive around for a bit.
Omar's Garage hey Omar I thank you for the input how ever it was not the throttle body at all but the coil packs which where I had included in my diagnosis but where everyone was replacing these I was like when in Rome lol. Replace the coils and car runs like car should thank you again
Bill S very good to know. Hopefully this info will help others. Doesn’t hurt to have a new throttle body though as they seem to fail very often on these cars.
Thanks, man, my 2014 Patriot did this to my wife with my kids going to the School in the Middle of worst Morning traffick, i was on my job when she call me upset, but when I connect the Obd Scanner the codes was: P2173 do you have any idea, i guess it is, because have the same trouble.
My traction control light comes on and my engine either dies or it loses total engine power for a few seconds and runs fine again. Mine is a manual transmission, so no limp mode for me. Mine is a 2015. Traction control light always comes on and now my CEL is now on. Throttle body?
D4Doom have you tried using an obdII scanner to get the engine error code. If you don’t have a scanner you can usually go to a parts store to get a free reading.
I am getting a Jeep Patriot 2014 and i need a 1 out of 10 how good is the car. I am just freaking out watching one after another issues with the car lol. Likely will happen to me with my luck xD. So how much can i expect to pay for a throttle body replacement?
GamePlayRaja I can’t give you a 1 out of ten since it’s not my car. In the three years my mother in law has had it, the throttle body went bad and a tire pressure sensor that is about $50 to get replaced at a tire shop. There is another video on my channel on how to replace the throttle body yourself which I think was $100-$200, but watch the video to be sure.
Could be several things, but throttle body is cheap enough and easy enough to replace that it’s worth either cleaning it first and if not just replace it.
they're just charging you out the butt for that just to make a big chunk of money. I have a pre-owned 2016 Patriot that i got from a dealership 2 months ago and i've been having the same issue with my throttle too, it's a pain in the ass.
Stuart Baucum for under $100 it’s worth it to just replace the tb and rule that out. From the amount of views I get on this video it seems to be a very common issue with these cars.
Hi Omar I need some help okay 3 wks should I went on a road trip I drive a 2014 grand Cherokee overland and when I was driving my Jeep went in to basically limp mode went into neutral it suddenly shut off I went to the side of the road disconnected the battery was able to drive it but later turned off again I took it to a friend he basically replaced the crankshaft position sensor well after 10 minutes of driving it the Jeep did the exact same thing it did on my road trip reading again service electronic throttle body help me pls i need answers I really don’t want to take it to the dealership if it’s something easy fix oh also my friend deleted all the codes that the Jeep was reading thank you
Melisa Pina it could be the throttle body, but u less you get a scan to see what kind of codes you are getting it’s hard to say. If it is the throttle body you can check out this video on how to replace it, it’s for a Patriot but it should be very similar even on a grand Cherokee Chrysler Jeep Patriot Throttle Body Install. Limp Mode th-cam.com/video/7Oa4zl6UkCU/w-d-xo.html
Wish I could help but never changed the transmission oil on the Patriot. In general though, I usually go with Motul oil and fluids as a brand. Good enough for my Porsche 911, it should be good enough for the Jeep.
Mine has always had no power when it's cold. You pull out and it's like it's coasting. Then in a few minutes it picks up and drives normal. But when you pull out even after warming up for a bit, it goes slower than a turtle. Not another $$$$$.
I am no advocate for new car dealerships but you also have to understand is that they don't just plug in an OBDII scanner. Codes give a direction to go with the diagnostics, after determining that the computer says their is a problem with the throttle body then it gets looked at with an Oscilloscope to see if the throttle body is getting signal, has ground, is putting out a throttle position signal. It all takes time to do and those techs are paid on a flat rate scale.
Wallace D There are good dealerships and there are bad dealerships just like with any business. My issue isn’t with dealerships in general, it’s with this dealership in particular that had the car on two occasions and didn’t resolve the problem while it was under warranty. I have had several good experiences with dealerships in the past. There is even a video my channel of me at my local Porsche dealership when I lost a wheel lock key. The treated me well and fairly. From the response and feedback and research I have done, the throttle body seems to be a very common issue.
hey omar i have a 2007 jeep patriot i replace the throttle body and other parts associated with this problem and i'm getting this code p2016 the car start right up and the engine is smooth but soon i press the gas pedal i still have no power. can you please help me with this. thanks
From that code it may be the flow control actuator on the manifold. Have you replaced that? If this is not working properly it will not allow air into the engine which means you get no power.
You think the same problem could be on my 2010 grand Cherokee srt8 the exact same thing happened went on limp mode and all the dash lights came can anybody help please ???
Carlos I Sanchez is it intermittent? On the Patriot this is how you have the tb reset itself but not sure of it works on the Cherokee 1).
It may be your battery if not won’t start. Check out this video How to check a battery, alternator, and replacing a battery. Absorbent Glass Mat Battery th-cam.com/video/7uTPMmFpghg/w-d-xo.html
My jeep shuttering like a sob tonight, this after similar experience in late fall in which dealership replaced the alternator. It has had over heating issues as well and bunches of stuff replaced there too. It is nice for wisconsin winters, has good speakers but electronics suck - stereo am/fm doesn't work and other switches don't work like interior lights. Why does everything made now have to be so shitty? Corporations are just evil.
Things are just made poorly now so that you have to keep buying more parts or replacing them. I have a clothes dryer from the late 80s. It’s still going strong. I replaced the bearings years ago. I’ve been through 3 clothes washers in 10 years though. The new stuff is not made to last on purpose imho.
@@OmarsGarage the thing with older things too is that they were made for you to repair yourself, now everything is with computers and covers just to make your life difficult and have no choice to call in a repair man.
That’s looks to be related to you anti lock braking system. It could be one of many things such as the abs sensors. I would get that checked out by a professional who may be able to scan the computer more thoroughly for errors.
I have a 2016 Jeep Patriot and this exact thing happened to me except, the next day when I turned the car on only the check engine light remained on. I turned the car off and back on again, no check engine light. Could I have an electrical issue? I have a code its: P2173
Alyssa Rivera it will act up intermittently. That code could definitely be related to the throttle body. Keep driving it around and if it happens again you may want to look into replacing the throttle body. I made a video on how to replace it right after this video.
Hi I am having the same issue with my 2014 Jeep Patriot I have have already changed the part but I am still having the same issue. Any suggestions on what else it may be ?
Hello sir Im having the same issue, I purchased a used TB for $300 from O'Reilly. The car drove smooth for about 2months and then out of nowhere this happened. Should I purchase another TB from Amazon?
Good Steward Real Estate honestly, I wouldn’t have purchased a used TB as they are prone to go bad. I think I paid $100 for a brand new one. I would try to buy a new and see if that solves the problem. Here’s a link with the details and install video I made. Chrysler Jeep Patriot Throttle Body Install. Limp Mode th-cam.com/video/7Oa4zl6UkCU/w-d-xo.html
If you can work on cars get an OBDM scan tool . They are inexpensive and can reset any codes . Got one at Walmart for $25.00. You can look the P codes online and with some research fix it yourself.
he's the Master OBDII scanners are definitely worth it. I have an icarsoft scanner that lets me reset oil change indicator and other things on my Porsche.
Most aftermarket stores will scan your car for free so they can sell you the part but not all dealers are a-holes like the place you went to but unfortunately they have a dishonest crew and I was a dealership tech for many years but for Toyota and they treated customers how they should but not all Toyota dealerships are the same either, I had a feeling it was the throttle body and now I'm certain tyvm.
Every place is different. I’ve taken my Tesla in for warranty work several times and they are the best. No questions asked just fixed whatever. Then you hear horror stories at other Tesla Repair shops. It shouldn’t vary but it does sometimes.
This procedure is after you replace the throttle body. Plus, make sure everything is turned off, radio, A/C, all accessories
@@OmarsGarage Okay thank you
It’s exactly what happened to my car tonight. Thx for making this video so I can show my mechanic.
You get it resolved?
Thank youuuuuuuuuu!!! Just had my 2008 Patriot towed home today for this exact same issue. The part is currently $60 on Amazon and it looks like Hubby will be tackling this fix in the next week or so. I still love my Patriot just as much as I did back when we drove it off the lot brand new (with the lifetime power train warranty) back in 2007.
Let us know if this fixes the issue.
Did it work
@@carlosmercado9157 hubby finally had time to look at it today.
If you are having the same issue it may be worth a try for $100.
Hey Omar thanks for the video, I changed the Throttle Body on my wife's 2015 Jeep Patriot and it's running beautifully.
Glad I could be of help 👍
Did you have to reprogram the throttle body??
@@fjnnkvbkkk3690 No, I didn't.
THANKS OMAR!!! This video and the one of you installing the throttle body has saved my life!!! Easy as pie and now my jeep runs BETTER THAN NEW. I'd pay you if I could 8)
King Emac glad I could help. A like and subscribe will do 😉.
This same thing happened to me. thank you so much for making this video. It helped tremendously.
Anthony Harris great 👍
I just had same symptoms with steady malfunction indicator light and electronic throttle control light flashing along with a few other lights on.
Omg thank you! This is exactly what happened with my car on the freeway to work this morning :(
Hey, exact same problem with me, 2016 4×4 jeep patriot 2.4 litre high altitude, the dealership said transmission issue and asking for $4000, should I replace throttle body ? Do it needs programming after change ?
Same thing just happened to my 2017 jeep patriot today ... this information is very helpful
Did you fix it? I got a 2017 patriot as well.
Comments like yours are exactly why I keep doing what I do. I’m so glad I could help. Thanks for the feedback. 👍
What's pcm mean
The computer.
@@OmarsGarage can you be proper I asking a question
The PCM refers to the Powertrain Control Module. It’s the computer in the car that controls everything.

Joe Nacos sometimes if you turn the car off and on it will sometimes fix itself but eventually it will completely fail.
@Adam Rodriguez that’s great news. It’s been several years since I changed mine and no issues.
Same issues here minus engine light a few years ago, replaced throttle body and no issues since.......till yesterday.....doing the SAME thing it did before. Idk what the deal with this Jeep is but I really wish ,you wife hadn't have picked it out as her new vehicle.
Bogus charges from the dealership are hilarious. Thank you for warning me to never get something fixed at a dealership
There are some good ones out there but I guess you need to read the reviews. I just looked up this particular dealer and most online reviews have them at 2 out of 5 stars.
We bring ours in they wanted close to 900$ to replace it. The part is cheap to get. My fiance uncle is going to do it with part 250$.
Thanks for the video I'm having the same exact promblem!
yup, same thing happening to me. 73k miles on a 2012 Patriot.
Thank you so much. I’m having the same issue. Waiting for the part to come in.
Did you solve the issue I’m having the same
Sry you experienced this. The electronic throttle body can be cleaned in most cases.
Works sometimes, but for many it will gradually start happening more often.
@@OmarsGarage I hope not 😕

What brand throttle body did you use and where’d you buy it? I just got my 2016 jeep Patriot days ago and it’s doing this problem
Thank you so much this just happened to me last night on my way home I thought I’d never figure out what it is😭
Hopefully you get it fixed quickly and cheaply. Glad I could save you a headache 😆
Currently replacing mine afterbirth bought it from someone that thought the transmission would have to be replaced. Glad the throttle body was cheaper 🥰
Wow, you must have gotten a deal. $60 part.

Sounds like the same problem most folks have had. Since I replaced mine it hasn’t acted up for at least 2 years now.
Mine does the same but it has a fuel pressure sensor code that keeps coming on and this vehicle didn't even have that equipped on it. Any answers on that would be great. 2014 Jeep compass 2.4l what could that sensor be?
Sorry, I don’t think the fuel pressure code would be related to this, but if you have the exact same symptoms, it could be. For $60 it’s worth a shot.
I have the same problem!! My 2011 Jeep Compass is in the shop right now
Javier Olvera they all share the same throttle body I believe.

Thanks man. That’s the point of most of my videos. Thanks for watching.
Don’t buy it, buy the computer instead
Keep us updated. Curious as to what else it could be.
Any updates?
This same issue is happening with my 2015 Patriot. I've owned the car for nearly 10 years and have never had any issues with it. Now that it has 131k miles on it, this issue is arising. Maybe the throttle body has gone bad over time and has reached its lifecycle? Not sure. But I dropped it off with my mechanic today and they are looking at it and say they will probably have to replace the throttle body. Looks like it's going to run me around $1,000 to get it replaced.

they did the same thing in medford oregon. it was the exact same issue you were having but they also needed to change out the o2 censors.
Hi Omar! My 2015 Patriot did this last Thursday but hasn't done it since. Do you think it still needs to be replaced or maybe cleaned? Thank you!!
What did the mechanic say they did to fix it? Did they replace the throttle body?
@@OmarsGarage they only replaced it. They really didn't say much and that they can't find anything wrong with it.
Thank you same thing is happening to my dodge charger you saved me a trip and money car is doing Exactly the same thing
I’m curious… What were the codes?
It’s been a while since I’ve made this video, but I believe several folks have given the codes in the comments.
Did you ever get it to go away. Change my TBM last week and still going into limp mode.
My 2008 Chrysler town and country does this sometimes and if while driving it happens, turn key off then on again still in drive and it will start and go back to normal. Mostly only does it on mine while sitting at idle
I’d try cleaning the throttle body firstz
Hi omar, first off thank you so much for making this video!
yea i had the same problem a little over a year ago ( October 2018 ) ( i took a picture of the codes i got from odb scanner)
u0401 - invalid data recieved from ecm/pcm a
u0100 - lost communication with ecm/pcm a
p2173 - throttle actuator control system high ? airflow detected
i thought it was the throttle body as well, so i went and bought the part to replace it. i also bought a new air filter just in case that wasn't the problem
Luckily when i replaced the air filter the car started to act normally, UNTIL one year later (November 2019) the problems resurfaced
the car started having issue throttling and no power.
the check engine light went on again, i'm going to check for codes and update you
Let me know if it’s the same codes. Also check all the cables to make sure nothing has come loose. What brand Throttle body did you replace the original one with?
@@OmarsGarage hi omar, its kinda late where i live ill try to update you tomorrow on the codes, to be honest, i have never done any work on my car (novice) and wasn't sure if the problem was the throttle body. i bought the same one you recommended in your other video but haven't changed it because the car worked fine when i changed the car filter
i have the same symptoms as you periodically the car will lose power and all the lights will flash,
not sure if the p2173 code is related to the throttle body or not.
That happened I changed the throttle body and the engine computer along with spark plugs. Any other suggestions?
Could be a coil pack …have you scanned the complete yet after replacing the plugs and tb?
What do you mean scan?
Hi, my dodge caliber 2008 has the same symptoms, its sluggish and cannot move, but it jas no any code relating to Tps, instead it has transmission code, does throttle issue cause transmission codes to appear?
Does the car not move at all? If you are getting the same lights on the dash then it could definitely be it. The part is cheap enough and easy enough to change that personally I would try that first. If the car will not move the. It’s definitely something else
@@OmarsGarage i showed it to a mechanic today, he said (i am sure its the transmission control issue)
I have the same issue. On my 2018 Jeep Compass. But no check engine light or the voltage light. Anyone have a idea what it could be?
Christelabella bella great, let me know how it all works out.
@@OmarsGarage Thank you so much for replying and posting this video. I'm changing mine tomorrow.
Let me know how it goes.
Is the car running bad or do you just have the lights on? The angle sensor is pretty expensive.
Let us l know how it works out for you.
Shaun Mckelvey what a pain in the butt. Glad you figured it out.
What about if u turn it on and it shuts off
Due to all the sensors and electronics cars are more sensitive to weather especially temp swings with humidity why driving early hours see smore issues
hey Omar pretty good vid but my daughters bf has an 09 Jeep patriot with similar issues it shudders and stalls limp mode etc so I did this procedure only to still have the same problems I am a former mechanic of 25yrs any other ideas? what it may be?
P2173 is a Throttle Actuator Control System Code so most likely related to the throttle body. Should be the same issue.
Broo the exact thing is going on with my car omgg thankk youuuu
Hope this is it because it’s a quick and easy fix.
You said it was under warranty why should you have to pay anything
Don’t get a Jeep Patriot that’s a girls car.get a manly Jeep Wrangler
throttle body shorted means bad throttle body?
Could be several things, but throttle body is cheap enough and easy enough to replace that it’s worth either cleaning it first and if not just replace it.
Keep driving in the left lane....
they're just charging you out the butt for that just to make a big chunk of money.
Also…..ugh. Dealerships are the WORST.

Melisa Pina it could be the throttle body, but u less you get a scan to see what kind of codes you are getting it’s hard to say. Omar's Garage thank you so much for replying I took it to auto zone and they said to replace the accelerator pedal position sensor
So idk if that could be it ugh this Jeep never again it gives me so much problems lol
Melisa Pina well the pedal position sensor should not be that expensive so I would try that out first.
What is the best transmission oil i can use for jeep patriot to avoid over rev?thanks
Wish I could help but never changed the transmission oil on the Patriot. In general though, I usually go with Motul oil and fluids as a brand. Good enough for my Porsche 911, it should be good enough for the Jeep.
We had these exact same symptoms and it turned out to be the OIL PRESSURE SENSOR.
Jairo Marquez do you have a part number?
@@OmarsGarage no, but it was a jeep commander
Is it safe to buy a car with limp mode
Dealerships like to drain your wallet
hey omar i have a 2007 jeep patriot i replace the throttle body and other parts associated with this problem and i'm getting this code p2016 the car start right up and the engine is smooth but soon i press the gas pedal i still have no power. can you please help me with this. thanks
From that code it may be the flow control actuator on the manifold. Have you replaced that? If this is not working properly it will not allow air into the engine which means you get no power.

Carlos I Sanchez is it intermittent? On the Patriot this is how you have the tb reset itself but not sure of it works on the Cherokee
1). Turn ignition to Run, but do not start engine.
2). Wait for all lights to turn off.
3). Over the course of 15 seconds, slowly depress the throttle all the way to the floor.
4). Over the next 15 seconds, slowly let the throttle out in the same manner.

Chrysler itself is a problematic brand, my mother in law threw over 4k in a pt cruiser and still having problems.
