    This version is much closer to the book in how things unfold. The original animate has cramped material from various other chapters and side stories etc etc hence it is fine for any one who has read the books, but from a initial first time audience view point, the original can be rather confusing.

      I like that though, in the sense that I feel they committed to playing as history documentary, rather than a story based on a character. It’s a different style but I thought it was effective on its uniqueness

      I also read the book and agree. The original OVA is a timeless classic, but The New Thesis is much closer if an adaptation. Even Von Ruenthal.

      @@joeandrew8752 I mean when you write sci-fi you can't always predict how advanced something is in the future. Computers in Logh are so advanced they send messages on paper instead because hacking is so easy. So when we then look at how tech might advnace which is pretty common for sci-fi universe set within our own world, the original does do a better job. The ships got a functionalist shape, they fire straight lazers and the bridge is usually very well protected. It looks like something that would be built to be functional, built to withstand and to ease traveling in soace, and easy to mass produce. The reason for Reinhard being uneasy about Yang in the original is due to his encounter in the movie that was released just prior to it that served as a prequel and documented their first encounter- "My Conquest is a Sea of Stars" IIRC

  • @brottoyottorb
    @brottoyottorb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    The original being what it was, its first episode works brilliantly. About Reinhardt being aware of Yang, they previously had a confrontation so it's natural too. Both versions work well for what they are. I'll get to the point about how the original's beginning going through all the introductions is part of its subtle narrative but first I'd like to highlight one thing the new one does well.
    THE SPACE BATTLE MAP IS FINALLY THREE DIMENSIONAL. It kinda irked me in 1988 version how the maps are basically 2d with slight height for objects, while the holographic picture Lapp had of his fiance was goddamn 3d.
    Now, to fulfill my promise, I'll just copy paste a part from my blog post: "I don’t know about the novel but, this anime is a historical fiction; and it surprises me how no one else seems to notice something this obvious. It’s not a historical fiction in the sense that a lot of it parallels many things that has happened throughout history, but rather it’s a historical fiction depicting what happened in the future, written even further in the future. The crude dialogues, pauses in conversations, facial expressions, sudden action, they’re all presented in a manner that feels as if the characters are following a script. The script is written to be natural, and the characters play the roles very well. But it still feels like it’s being acted or it’s a drama that is being told.
    The narrator’s words make it even more obvious, while the 80’s & 90’s animation and color palette helps emphasizing the feeling even further. That’s why I always thought that LotGH couldn’t have been made in a more appropriate time. Now, the reason why I consider it a historical fictionalization instead of a simple description of history is because this anime shows detailed interactions among the characters and parts of their personal lives that shouldn’t be available in history. So it’d only make sense if it was a work of fiction written by someone even further in the future, who fictionalized the history to present his story. And the anime embodies this idea through and through."
    Will be patiently waiting for the next part of your in-depth Hyouka analysis.

    • @WackaMei

      Prottoy Rahman Why wouldn't the "private conversations" showcased in the show be known? There are several characters whose entire purpose it is to spread the words of others, like Dusty, Dominique and Mecklinger. Other characters that survive (spoilers) like Mittermeier, Julian and Poplan are vital in sharing these pieces of information.

    • @courtneyvaldez7903
      @courtneyvaldez7903 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@WackaMei This is late, but...because memory doesn't work like that. Eyewitness testimony is inherently unreliable--this is why police try to get interviews with witnesses on record as quickly as possible. Even a couple days can muddy things to the point of uselessness. When you're dealing with years and decades after the fact, forget about it.
      @Prottoy RAhman While the story plays with it elements of historical dramatization, I don't think it's ever explicit enough to say that the base narrative is meant to be taken as a literal representation of one, other than the episodes that were actual history documentaries. I've always taken the narrator as just that, a narrator who may have been discussing the events as a documentarian, but that the scenes themselves weren't meant to be seen as that documentary. As for the "crude" dialogue, that is easily credited to it having been a fan translation prior to this current release (specifically from an English speaking perspective, and can't speak to the quality and/or style of the Japanese dialogue). I would agree, though, that the show is undoubtedly heavily informed by the aesthetic of documentaries.

    I'm so glad they got rid of the nervous Reinhard, that's something they purely added in the OVA. I don't remember him knowing about El Facil at all in the books or caring about who the hero was. This attitude of confidence (not undeserving), plus borderline arrogance is partly responsible for putting him in the battle of vermilion eventually.

    • @timothyvenske6519
      @timothyvenske6519 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hmm I think that it is largely due to there being no “My Conquest is the Sea of Stars: Die Neue These”. The movie, which acts as a pilot/prequel for the OVA, results in Reinhard learning Yang’s name and gaining respect for him. In DNT canon, apparently the first episode is also the first encounter between the two. So, in DNT, there is no reason for Reinhard to be nervous.

  • @hennyzhi2261
    @hennyzhi2261 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    I think they are trying to shift away from the historical narrative of the OVA and try to frame it as a more present narrative than one being told in the past tense. Their are advantages and disadvantages to that, but I think it will produce a unique perspective on the legend that will add something of value to even people like me who've gone through the show in completion about three times now (which is a hard thing to do as you know because 110 mainline + movies + other material is nothing to scoff at). I wouldn't even say I'm completely adept at recalling all the details of the narrative because it's like studying actual history texts.

    I love this new version because it not only redesigned the characters but the entire plot is the same, although with a lot of twists especially the main characters despite retaining their original personalities. I really love how Production I.G. hired Mamoru Miyano as the voice of cold, rational, and confident Count Reinhard von Lohengramm. Reinhard, in my opinion, is basically the version of Ultraman Zero who seeks the worthy opponent and counter him in a careful military television series. Coincidentally, Zero and Reinhard are both voiced by Mamoru Miyano himself.

Original overwhelmed you with information and many POVs which I like as a fan but it doesn't work that well for someone who just started the series. Grate video! And I would love to see more of your thoughts on DNT in future videos! The reason Reinhard is aware of Yang/nerves about him in the first episode of the OVA is because he does encounter him in the short story that was made into the movie "My conquest is in the Sea of Stars." *However* this short story was written well after the first novel so there is no reference to this within that novel. Reinhard's initial disregard of Yang after hearing his broadcast to the FPA forces is an almost word for word adaptation of how he responds in the original novel. In fact a lot of what people are going to object to in DNT as "changes" are actually places where the OVA deviated from the source material to which the new anime is returning.

    I haven't watched the remake, so can't say anything about that, but I kind of agree with the minuses of the original OVA that you mention. And I feel like that's exactly why the original movies were so important. They sat the tone and heroes a lot better than first episode of OVA and after watching the movies it was much easier to get into the series. If the remake was able to do that in the first episode than I should probable check that out too, cause this story definitely deserves it!

      I prefer Reinhard not knowing who Yang was, as it was in the novel. Having previous connections made up by the anime really undermines the sense that Yang really came out of nowhere. Yes he briefly was a hero in El Facil but that was a minor incident in the scale of this war. People need to fully appreciate that the Battle of Astarte was the first moment when both of them stepped into the spotlight of history, and that's why the story starts from here.

Focus=simplicity and actually yes it's an interesting point that Reindhart (i might mispell watched in other language) didn't see Yang as an opponent. But the whole point of the original show was that he was, you know, a person. He wasn't self absorbed freak that people around him think he was. That's why he needed Oberstein. Here we have unemotional doll that makes him cliche anime genius boy. And of course I don't think original OVA was sacred or perfect. I can talk hours about how it treated its female characters, for example. Anyway, thanks for cool content!

      @ВалентинаВалиахметова-ч4г ปีที่แล้ว

      I've watched both OVA and DNT. And from my perspective, female characters are treated worse in DNT. They practically don't say or do anything if the script doesn't make them do so, while the important events in which they participate are practically the same as in OVA. What's more, OVA gave more time to the characters during such scenes. As for character design, several of them have huge and empty eyes (Anne Rose and Evangelin (Mittermeyer's wife)) like they are lifeless or just high.
      I may have missed something, but I would like to know why do you think that female characters are treated badly in OVA?

      Few watch the original for their art and what not, it is basically the faithful and complete book to animate adaptation in Japanese animate history. The original is 95% faithful to the source material to the point of adding stuff that is good from subsequent side stories in the main plot. I can tell you about the useless time filler scenes of the original, which slows down pacing and serve little purposes (same goes for scenes in old transformers), but over all, the plot stays intact which is as rare as it gets today.

    • @yukie_tn
      @yukie_tn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You really don't have to watch the original at all. Honestly since I read the books first, the original anime didn't bring anything new, and I didn't like the animation style either. What it did well was stay faithful to the novels and introduced this story to people who are not interested in reading or have access to the books. But then at the same time I feel the strength lies with the underlying story/characters and not necessarily with the anime medium. So far this remake looks just as fine and I feel like the dramatic moments may be even handled better, like Yang's introduction.
      Another thing I'd mention is that the novels have finally been translated into English, currently 1-6 are available. It probably takes less time to read than watch 110 episodes + all the movie/OVAs.

  • @WackaMei

    This video is great.
    ... HOWEVER, the comparison between episode 1 of DNT and episode 1 of the original OVAs is not fair unless you count the "episode 0" tv movie (a 1-hour prologue basically) where we're introduced to Yang And Reinhards factions. Had you acknowledged this in this video I'd have been fine with any criticism, and even agreed to some larger extents.
    But this is not the case when the context of the movie is omitted and you presenting episode 1 of the original OVAs as "the first episode/introduction" to several characters. Because it's not, in the original anime.

    I only have two complaints:
    1. Ship redesigns. The original designs were simplistic and realistic. Imperial ships had some curves for style and atmospheric operations, but still quite simplistic overall; FPA ships were blocky and looked like ship versions of T-34 tanks because their focus of mass production. All the ship components you could clearly tell what they do. The remake makes the ships a bit too shiny, and there are too many funky parts sticking out. Like 3:20, why are the engines moved to the front now? Why a combination of "red" and "blue" engines? And why the slanted ones(FPA ships don't do atmospheric flights)? They also look like the original imperial ships reversed. The imperial ships has aesthetics and all but they look more like Protoss ships now...
    The weapons are supposed to be particle beam based, they travel at almost the speed of light, so the original did a better job by just drawing continuous straight lines(one could argue it saved animation money). The remake is fancy and CGI is beautiful, but it loses that realistic touch, one could mistake the battle scene as star wars, mass effect, gundam, star blazers or any soft scifi that involves space battleships.
    2. The new series being PG-13. The original doesn't hold back when it comes to bloodshed and it truly showcased the terror of war, and that any character is mortal and fragile. The remake...I have no idea how they're gonna do the hand-to-hand combat now.
    Otherwise, I agree with this video that the remake does a fine job and makes many welcome changes on storytelling. The characters look a bit weird for someone who watched the original but maybe fine for someone new to the series, but the voice acting and characterization is still on point.

      IMO, DNT ships is arguably more realistic when you factored in that in the Novel these ships has insane acceleration and deceleration that they can cross light second distance in minutes and stop just as quickly. Realistically the small deceleration/directional thrusters they gave to the OVA ships cannot accomplish that without throwing suspension of disbelief out of the window for the same reason one wonder how ships in Star Wars are supposed to decelerate when they don't have reverse thrusters. Hence DNT ships now has visible, large thrusters on their ships to decelerate instead.
      As for the front mounted engine for FPA ships, I once thought like you too that it doesn't make sense, but then I remembered how one steer starship IRL.
      Simply put, it make these ships able to steer without dotting the entire length of their ship with directional thrusters and hence weaken the ship structure. It's the same idea with how you steer tracked vehicle IRL; you stop port engine while leaving the starboard one running, then you'll steer left. Stop the starboard engine while firing up your port engine and you steer right.
      FPA ships has the engine slanted downward also for the same exact reason; notice that the front are slanted backward while at the rear end of their ships has another engine slanted forward, firing the front engines and the ship will pitch the nose up, while firing the rear engine will pitch the nose down. It's basically give these ships a vertical movement.

      Actually the only complaint towards Die Neue These I have so far is design for some character. I can't differentiate Schoenkopf/Schenkopp with Attenborough and Reuenthal's design is not my taste

      That large ship design was similar to Dune's, Adding a weighty , stabilising affect against all the fast moving objects and thus suggests innovations in metals and fuels .

    Disagree. It doesn't really matter how many characters get introduced in the first episode of the original for the simple reason that it then has 100+ freakishly epic episodes to tell their intertwining stories and develop them. You don't have to immediately focus on who is who for every single one of them, nor you are required to in order to understand what is going on.
    Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned the remake was neither needed nor wanted. The only part that the remake does arguably better (you can still lve the vintage style) is the representation of the space battles, because of the obvious advantage afforded by superior technology. The character design is IMO absolute garbage, with the modern anime style that makes everyone look the same. I cannot believe anybody can tell me with a straight face that they prefer the anonymous look of the new lifeless mugs to the unique, expressive original faces of Oberstein (good lord I love the character), Schonkopf or pretty much any other main player

    The original pacing is horrible at least in the first episodes, try to introduce to many characters at ones, at least the remake have a more coherent storyline and better, way better space battles.

    Analysis is ok, but throwing in a dislike on account of completely butchering the pronunciation of so many words.
    Astarte, 'ass-tartey' not 'estate', Reuenthal, not "Rointhall" Phezzan is 'Fez-an' not 'phase-ahn'.

    • @christianalbertjahns2577
      @christianalbertjahns2577 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "Rointhall" part is actually more accurate. The accurate pronunciation is something like "Roienthal". The "eu" part is read "oi". It's German name, after all

    • @christianalbertjahns2577
