    Got the codes cleared and too the car out for a spin. It died suddenly after about 1.5 miles. Tried the diagnostic tool again and All the test ports on the A side show 1-1-1. I am at a dead end with this car. At least I know that I have tried and with the help of your videos, I feel that I have done my best. Wife wants to donate the car to NPR now.

    Hey Robert, thanks for the great video. I have used it to pull codes off my 1995 850 OBD-1 in the past. Right now when I use this technique I can only get codes from A7. when I plug into the other ports and hold the button for the same amount of time, it doesn't flash any code. No flashes at all for anything but A7, and I'm not able to reset the codes. On some of the other spots it dimly shows the red light when I plug it in, but on others, no light at all. I wondering if I need to replace anything in the plug system? Any thoughts for when it flashes for one but won't flash anything for the others? I'm pretty sure it has codes stuck in some other places that I've gotten codes in the past (like A3), and that's stopping me from resetting.

    I noticed you started working with A2 port (fuel system airs) and then without any reason, you changed to A3 port (ABS) and then reset the port. Can you explain that? Why you changed the port? If we get the "check engine" message how we know what port we need to start working with? Do we need to buy a special tool? and if this is the case what's the name of it? Thank you in advance for your answer.

  • @2Small2Fail
    @2Small2Fail 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Robert, if I'm correct that this applies to the 960 as well, what I just discovered trying to check transmission codes on my 1993 960 (OBD1) is that instructions I find online say to plug the test lead into hole #1 to run this test. Problem is: when I check the OBD unit, hole #1 has no wires going to it. The harness that feeds the OBD unit A (there are two) only has wires going to 4 of the 8 holes, by design. And hole #1 is not one of them. Your thoughts? Thank you!

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may have an internal link. Does anything blink when you jump that hole? If not, you'll need to check a manual to see which port will give you transmission codes.

    • @2Small2Fail
      @2Small2Fail 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobertDIY Nothing blinks, which was my first clue something wasn't right. At the very least it should give me a 1-1-1 reading. That's why I started looking at the OBD unit itself and discovered there is no wire to the #1 port. I'm following instructions for the pre-'96 960s with the OBD1. The instructions are the same here: www.volvotips.com/index.php/940-960/volvo-960-service-repair-manual/volvo-960-automatic-transmission-diagnosis-service-manual/ AND here: www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/TransmissionAutoAW30.html#OnBoardDiagnostiCodesforAW3040SeriesAutomaticTransmissions No matter, I just thought you might have run across this particular peculiarity and have a thought on it. I was hoping to make some progress this weekend, but I can just ask my Volvo mechanic on Monday. I appreciate the quick response.

    Hi Robert , thanks for your videos I've found out how to fix loads of stuff on my v70xc thanks to your channel. Have you ever encountered an intermittent abs code 0074 hydraulic valves faulty signal? My abs sometimes intermittently kicks in under light braking and I've had the abs and stability light come on randomly for a few seconds after 50mph. I know it's a long shot but could it have anything to do with worn tyres on the front and decent ones on the rear being an all wheel drive?

      Not sure what year model your car is, however, for most of them, if the AWD system is still installed on the vehicle, it is critical to keep all 4 of the tires the same wear ratio/condition. If you fail to do that, you can destroy the AWD system pretty quick.

    • @zultan824

      @@RobertDIY it's a 1999 v70 xc. At first I thought it was just a glitch with cold weather as the lights only stay on a few seconds then go off and only seems to be after 50mph. I put the tyre pressures slightly higher in the front to compensate a bit and last I tried the lights didn't come on but the abs did kick in randomly under light braking. It's booked in to change the tyres soon so will see if it makes any difference but I doubt it

The car has a 5.1 and 6.2 number on the module as well as the part number. I can find replacements for both modules (with matching part numbers) but cannot find out which modules does what?? The problem is basically that the car starts right away and automatically rev's to 2500 rpm the dies. If I pump it it will (after a time) idle but it is rough. Can you please help to clarify which module I should replace? thanks Grant

    Hey Robert, I replaced the mass air flow sensor on my volvo 850 1994. Check engine light went away on its on after I unplugged the battery and connected it back up. So I Did not have to reset that. However, I feel like the car still seem to run lean because the rpm seems to stay about 850 rpm. It does not run rich because the rpm isnt going above 1000 at idle. Could the idle air control valve be faulty? Does it ever need replacing or is this some other problem?

      I am having this weird feeling because every time i shift from park to drive/reverse, the rpm fluctuates for a quick second and then becomes constant. Is that normal?
      Is it possible to diagnose or findout if this weird feeling I am getting is false? Since there is no lights on except ABS/Tracs, which means obd in the car wont give me codes on this cause. So can I check this forsure in any other way?

Recently the light came back on once again, and as I tried to check and clear the code on terminal #3, the terminal light goes on right when I connect the jumper and stays on no matter what. Hi Robert, do you have a suggestion? I can't clear a 4-4-4 code for A3 port? After the initial press of the button 7-10 seconds I am not getting the red light to reappear so I can clear code. No other codes exist except for the B2 cruise port throwing 1-2-2, which I understand would go away if I tested after a drive with cruise on and test without shutting car down. ABS light goes out a few seconds after startup. The ABS hydraulic pump noise/test functions at 20-30 MPH indicating pump is OK. 1994 Volvo 850 N/A 5-speed.Thanks!

      +David Silbert I don't understand your question, do you have a CEL?

    • @tampawithdave
      @tampawithdave 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert DIY No CEL. I had an ABS light temporarily because of bad connection with the big connector on driver side strut tower after I moved it to install a strut tower brace. I checked for coded in thePOBD1 after I reconnected to see if I needed to clear ant related codes. The 4-4-4 in A3 and the typical B2 1-2-2 for the cruise if tested without driving along 1st. I tried 4-1-5-1 to clear the 4-4-4 but it did not work like resetting a CEL or Service reminder. Resetting the ECU did not clear code

    • @tampawithdave
      @tampawithdave 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Silbert So the issue is that while the jumper is plugged into A3, holding the button for 7-10 seconds does not make the red light come on again after 3 seconds so I can hold the button for the next 7-10 push to clear the code. I did try entering 4-1-5-1 and the red light did stay on after the 4, but when I continued entering 1-5-1 the red light flashed the 4-4-4 code before I could continue the 1-5-1. Do you know if there is a code I can manually enter to clear the 4-4-4 in A3 port or do you think that in time it will clear itself?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is NO CEL, there is nothing to clear.

    • @tampawithdave
      @tampawithdave 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert DIY I sprayed the button and ports with electro-contact cleaner and searched online for Volvo 850 4-4-4. I read a lot including VolvoTips, the factory repair pages and MVS. I was able to clear the code. I drove the car about 10 miles. When I returned home I put the jumper back in A3. I turned the ignition key to on and viewed the code twice. I performed the 7 seconds button press but this time the red light did come on after 3 seconds. Did the second 7 seconds button press. The light went out. I did the 1 second press for codes and got 1-1-1 - trouble code cleared. I think the secret was to check for codes till they repeat and then to the clear procedure all during one session. I'll check it again after the 40 mile round trip to work tomorrow and report back if it returns.

      @@RobertDIY ive checked with a voltmeter and tried to pull at the battery terminal, and even checked the ground to the engine block but none of them was loose and i had 14,4 voltage at the block. Didnt find anything wrong with the wiring.

    Hi, i cant seem to pull codes from the b6. nothing happends when i push the led button, it only lights when i press then nothing more happends. i think i have the same issue on other ports aswell if i remember.
    I wanna see the codes since the passenger power seat (back rest) wont fold up and down the motor makes a sound 1second then quits. guess it needs to be recalibrated.. dunno how to do that.

    I was able to get the codes cleared from the "A" OBD tool. Ran the car for a while back and forth in the driveway and no problems. Now I am really confused and I know I have to take this car out on the road to really test it. This time I will get my wife to follow me in the other car. I guess if it stalls again, it wil throw a code and then I will be sure if it's the MAF sensor or the Cam sensor.
