They really should have done a direct adaption of this story. I heard once the author of birthright said when he heard man of steel was taking inspiration from this story he was very excited to see it. When he went to go see the film however, after the first hour he wanted to walk out the cinema because he was annoyed at just how much wrong they were getting about the character and his mythos.
While I'd absolutely love a direct adaptation of Birthright, I'm definitely still in favor of seeing what new creators can bring to the story over time. It's tricky to describe; I think we all have our favorite take on the character but it's taking new directions that lets the character grow and deepen. And sure, there will always be versions that I'm not a fan of, but I also can't wait to see where Superman goes next.
Yeah Mark Waid was really not happy with Man Of Steel but David Goyer when writing the script did take direct moments from his series so I could see why he was upset. He was not happy at all in his review of the film. Also great job on the video geek. “Superman wins by killing Zod. By snapping his neck. And as this moment was building, as Zod was out of control and Superman was (for the first time since the fishing boat 90 minutes ago) struggling to actually save innocent victims instead of casually catching them in mid-plummet, some crazy guy in front of us was muttering “Don’t do it…don’t do it…DON’T DO IT…” and then Superman snapped Zod’s neck and that guy stood up and said in a very loud voice, “THAT’S IT, YOU LOST ME, I’M OUT,” and his girlfriend had to literally pull him back into his seat and keep him from walking out and that crazy guy was me. That crazy guy was me, and I barely even remember doing that, I had to be told afterward that I’d done that, that’s how caught up in betrayal I felt. And after the neck-snapping, even though I stuck it out, I didn’t give a damn about the rest of the movie.”
@@ForEveryKindofGeek We need a Superman film that actually captures the spirit of Superman. No more new takes. Just give fans a 100% faithful adaptation of Superman.
@@Emoney-hy2kn you watched the whole movie right paid attention to the fact that zod stated that his only purpose for living was to save krypton now that all that was lost he saw no reason to let any life on earth live. Tell me what was clark suppose to do to a being that clearly can out fight him and cares that no one will get hurt or even use that against him superman could not fly up because zod most likely stronger could keep them grounded and he could not block his heat vision because earlier in the film we see that heat vision does harm kryptonians his only option was to end him and he felt awful about it. Plus this wasn't the first time he killed zod he did that in the comics too for the same reason but instead of snapping his neck he slowly killed him with kryptonite.
Superman Birthright is an excellent story of the origin of Superman, this would have been the beginning of the DC Extended Universe with the indicated tone that they set when making that adaptation of the comic.
Superman: Birthright may be my favorite graphic novel that I own. It's certainly up there. Birthright is the definitive Superman origin story/early superhero career in my opinion. The influence of Birthright is a big reason why I have a soft spot for the film Man of Steel.
Superman: Birthright should have been the blueprint for the live-action Superman for the 21st Century. Mark all but laid out the perfect shot-by-shot script of a thoughtful, engaging, introspective, and brilliant superhero instead of the angry, brooding conflicted mess we were subjected to in most of the movies. Superman is supposed to be inspirational. He is supposed to embody hope. He is not supposed to be a brooding Shakespearean character on some throne. He is supposed to be in the sky and helping those in need and that is what Birthright gives us. A solid origin of an intelligent hero who wants nothing more than to help people in need.
I wish adaptors would actually just read this and Secret Origin to make the best adaptation yet. Together, such a combo would be the Superman film equivalent of Batman Begins.
I legitimately got goosebumps at the end! A lot of people don't understand why I love Superman so much, dismissing him as too overpowered but this video perfectly captured my love for the character. Absolutely a fantastic video on one of my favorite characters of all time!!!

Probably the most I've loved a Superman comic since reading Superman Smashes the Klan. I feel this is how you write Superman into the 21st century without losing what makes him so iconic of a superhero. This video is also as incredible as the comic. Great stuff Doug.
Awesome video mark waid is one of the all time writers kingdom come his seminal runs on flash FF and the legion of super heroes. And of course irredeemable and incorruptible waid is an excellent storyteller and superman birthright is a perfect example of it
After picking up and reading a copy of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man after I saw your video on that series, I'm definitely psyched to look into reading this one! It seems you find some great series that really encapsulate the best versions of these characters.
Thanks! I always try to look for books with more "human" stories, and Birthright has that in spades. I absolutely loved Waid's take on the character, putting him in a world closer to ours and having him rise above it anyway. It makes Superman feel even more timeless.

They said the new Superman film is gonna take inspiration from "Whatever happened to truth justice and the American way", but I hope it takes something from Birthright too. Legacy isn't gonna be an origin story, but i hope there's like some brief Birthright origin shown, like Clark's time in Africa. Especially since I heard Legacy is gonna be early in his career and have him hop into a world that already has heroes. So a little backstory couldn't hurt.

Honestly? BVS's Luthor is at least a bit different from Birthright's version. Birthright's Luthor is sloppy, awkward and such as a young man. As an adult, however, he is closer to his Post-Crisis counterpart and at least more contained. BVS's Luthor is just unhinged 100% of the time.
Nah Jesse's lex is straight ass,unintimidating and full of quirks and lines like "Ahoy","Uhmm" or "Eh",birthright lex is actually colder and more in control than eisenbergs erratic and manic goofy acting

Thats.....ironic birthright is part of the reason I don't have a soft spot for MOS. And mark waid certainly doesn't have a soft spot for that movie.
