What makes a superhero long lasting, I think, is their level of empathy. Cynical characters are fun, but people will always want to reach for a story where the hero cares but can still be nuanced And that superhero ideal has to change throughout the years, especially as new problems and ideas have greater weight in society.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek

Could't have said it better myself. Christopher Reeve had a great quote on Superman, that “What makes him a hero is not that he has power, but that he has the wisdom and the maturity to use the power wisely." For me, the idea that Clark's empathy is his power hits harder than any other element of the character, and I think it's a shame that it's often ignored.

I don't know. I recognize what they were going for. But it's trite. I know how Superman started. Busting up slums and the like. This sounds like hippie crap.

Superman is an ideal. Not an ideal of having power, but of having the wisdom, compassion, and restraint to use it justly. We should all strive to be closer to that ideal, especially those who already have power.

Thanks so much!!! And I totally agree, most of the New 52's Superman stories were lost on me, a lot of Pak's included, but what I really liked about Hard Truth was that it did so much with so little. I just wish we could get more grounded, street-level Superman stories like that in the future.

That is the essence of Superman comics, he is constantly in the middle of a moral conflict, in each issue Superman has to face a tremendously difficult decision to do or not do what is right, on many occasions what is right is indiscernible.

I used to dislike Superman. He was too...super. I told this to an old friend and we discussed why I disliked and he loved Superman. My reason, he just felt too strong to big. He was boring. But his response was that's the point. This of him as not something you can be, but someone you can always aim to become. He is the pinnacle of whats right. And I just thought about it, took it in and I came to love Superman. Fighting for what's right, being empathic, doing all he can to even save one person. I don't need stories where he fights gods. But I love stories where he fights injustice. I would never want to be Superman. But if I had his power, I would want to just save everyone I could and stand up for those many try to silence. This was a great video, count me in for more of what you got.

I have always have had a soft spot for Superman and never liked darker takes on him. He is the good part of humanity. He has the morals which anyone can achieve. He may have all this power but he chooses not to use it most of the time, Superman rather use his words to solve a problem. He inspire others to do good just like him, just the little bit of hope everyone needs.

I've always loved that take, and I think it's especially present in Hard Truth. Pak had a really interesting idea at the end of the book, that while Superman is always going to help where he's needed, it's also on us to live up to his example. It's an incredible call to action, especially today.

Thank you so much. This was actually the arc that started around the time I got into comics during a hard time I was going through in High School and I was one of those naysayers who didn't like Superman since I couldn't get what he stood for at the time. Then I read this story alongside Superman: Lois & Clark and in an instant, I got it. That image of Clark protecting the protesters from the cops always stays in my head and is one of the many reasons I strive to help others like Superman. Hell, Pak and Jurgens Superman's stories are why I want to write comics and why my #1 goal in my career dream is to write Superman. Thank you, sir, for covering one of my favorite arcs in New 52 Superman.

This video is great, I’ve only read all star, losing and Clark, and rebirth action comics and Superman until Bendis got on the book. I really don’t care for the much of the action or grand elements of Superman, and just like seeing him help people and just be a real genuine guy you’d love to have in your life, Seeing his interactions with Jon and Lois during rebirth was so heartwarming. I’d never had given this arc a chance if it wasn’t for this video, even since I found out about Clark’s inherit political roots, I was curious to read those types of stories, so I’ll definitely give these issues a shot. A truly super video!

I read a DC’s Death Metal post finale one of the stories was about how Superman prepared for the finale battle to make the most of his possible finale day he builds a watch that allows him to be in multiple places at once, it’s still one of my favorite stories to this day because it captures everything to love about the character his kindness his ability to give hope and the sci fi goofiness and wonder I respected the character for, in those old comics I read from my childhood or the classic completion from the golden age my grandfather gave me. Superman may not be my favorite Super Hero but if modern audiences can love similar modern characters like Invincible/Omni-man, All-Might, Then why can’t Superman be loved equally. I feel like it’s because the character isn’t as wide spread and shown to variety of people as they used to be and the recent portrayals of Superman haven’t added to the character or their popularity, My opinion if the character has any issues it’s how the media markets the blue boy scout as for their core and personality itself there’s always going to be room in people minds and hearts for a character like Superman.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I couldn't agree more. I know there's plenty of cynicism and pragmatism in superhero media today, and I think it all builds on superhero tropes incredibly well, but I have to believe none of that would hit so hard if there wasn't a part of us that already bought into the idealism of heroes like Superman. There are plenty of stories that talk about "more realistic takes" on heroes, but I think there's a power in reaching towards examples like Superman.

  • @kr555wizard

I came here from drake's channel, and boy is this amazing, I've been a comic fan ever since i picked up my dad's old comic book collections many many years ago, and this really reminds me why I love them. Sure the powers are cool and epic, but I love them cause they inspire. To me this is how a hero can be realistic, being darker and grittier is not realistic at least in my eyes, real heroes who inspire others exist, and I feel disheartened that most people think that for a hero to be realistic and relatable they have to be darker more selfish, more angry. Yet stories like this show a realistic hero can still hold on to their ideals, still strive to be the best beacon of hope, while also dealing with hard hitting matters that exist in the real world. Thanks for making such a great video on superman.

Just found your channel, absolutely terrific video.
New 52 Clark did have some good stories, tucked in around some very mediocre ones, and this was one of the best.
To me the notion that Superman is 'out dated' or has no relevant stories to tell in a modern context is deeply misguided, I could scarcely conceive of a more apt hero for our time.
Having him in a t-shirt again, like Morrison's Action Comics and the old stories, was a great way to match his 'striped down' powers and relatability to every man and woman. The Golden Age shield is another nice touch.
Also, you have a really terrific speaking voice.
Going to binge your channel, share some videos and look forward to new things!

@@johnthai6188 yup that's right and funny enough both stories with new 52 superman and bendis superman secret identity revealed were both retconned out out of existence years later, which for good reason because secret identity revealed were just bad and garbage ideas from the very beginning.

@@TevyaSmolka i don't know about that, have u read hard truth? that is a great superman story, with his identity being revealed. or even watched the video all the way through? because it would just seem like you only watched it because the content creator said he didn't like bendis superman: not the story he's talking about. which is kinda sad in a way, that you only watched it because he didn't like bendis's superman.
the sad thing about new 52 superman is that by the time he get's his secret identity back, he dies in the next arc.

Try Action Comics #1. Although I’ve got a feeling you have, and this is just in bad faith. Either way, hope you open your mind a little in the future.
