First thing I thought was this would be best applied to camping/backpacking. If you're making coffee for more than one person you'd either have to share the same straw or buy multiples, which instantly detracts any possibility of it replacing a coffee machine.

This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact th-cam.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

  • @arturothecook

This idea is taken from a very popular South American drink called Yerba Mate. You pour lots of that “tea” on a special cup. The “filter” part of the “bombilla” ( the name of that straw) filters the Yerba just like this coffee drinker. Now this one has a finer colander style filter than the Bombilla but it works the same. The reason you orange juice didn’t go though is that coffee or tea don’t clog the filter because of the size of the fabules. Orange pulp is too rubbery and clogs it.

    • @OgdenM

Yeap, I said the same thing. But, coffee is VERY different then mate. It gets more and more gross tasting the longer you let it brew. Vers Mate gets even better tasting.

    • @EpsilonRosePersonal
      @EpsilonRosePersonal ปีที่แล้ว +7

It's probably worth noting that Yerba Mate is brewed a little bit differently, in that you typically use MUCH more of it is pile most of it on one side of the cup, so it forms a wall, rather than stirring it around.

@Lenny Buttz Seems like there's a bit of confusion, let's try to explain it simple for you.
The original poster is explaining that this product is similar to a straw called a bombilla used in Argentina to consume a drink called mate. You may have seen a product at your local grocery, sometimes called yerba mate. The poster then further explains that a filter can be attached to a bombilla and that bombillas are readily available at supermarkets. The poster then finishes with a bit of a rhetorical parthian shot commending the product as a "good idea anyway".

This is actually a common myth. Due to the science of how coffee extracts, because all the water and coffee are sitting wiht each other and no new water is being added, the coffee reaches an equilbrium quite quickly where it can't desolve/extract anymore of the coffee. This is why coffee tastings that last 20 minutes do not result in bitter coffee.

Or black coffee you probably shouldn't use the straw with just the coffee grains. Because the benefits of a paper filter is that it filters out the some of the oil that causes some of the more bitter taste.

I'm a Kickstarter backer for these. I've had one since launch and I freaking love it. I've used it on a nearly daily basis and I have yet to have an issue. It's fantastic at work where there's no coffee maker and being able to sip coffee without using my hands helps a lot while working. They sell replacement filters but mine is still good as new after over a year and a half of use. There's one caveat, though: if you like cinammon with your coffee you're out of luck, since it will clog the filter and not go through it. A solution is to put the cinnamon _inside_ the filter, but it'll be all gone very soon that way.

I'm not a complete coffee snob but I did learn, especially from various TH-camrs, some techniques to make good coffee and the science behind them. Similar to a French Press, you pour in about 200 degree water (to "cook" the coffee since boiling would "burn" it), add in a precise amount of medium grind beans and steep for about 4 minutes, press and pour a cup of coffee. Now the problem with both, is if you don't drink the coffee right away, it will continue to steep and "over-extract" becoming bitter which will kill any other flavors. So, with a French press, you can pour the extra coffee into an insulated carafe, or have a special press that closes of the filter, separating the beans and water.
So, if you don't drink the whole cup fairly quickly, it'll become bitter the longer it sits. and personally, adding cream to the cup with the beans still in it, is like adding milk and/or sugar to tea with the tea bag still in it. The bag will absorb some of it and it will lose some of the added flavor when you take the bag out.
Still, I think it's an interesting product with some potential. Thank you for the review.

Reading tea leaves. As a kid the first tea I drank was made with loose tea in a cup with boiling water. You allowed the tea to set a little time and then drank it, being careful not to stir up the grounds. Of course the very last of the tea had to be left because it would become impossible to not get tea leaves in your mouth. In the old days, fortunetellers would look into the cup and "read" the tea leaves, supposedly telling your fortune (future).

My other comment was long, roughly explaining over-extraction. I wanted to mention a similar looking coffee device popping up on my feeds from Kickstarter, called FinalPress. Rather than drinking through a filtered straw in a cup of over-steeping water and coffee grounds, you fill the basket with coffee, dip it into the hot water, stirring for a couple minutes. Then you press the plunger button on top of the stem and it acts like a french press, squeezing the water and coffee out before you remove it, to drink the coffee. It makes it similar to the tea leaf steeping ball you had. The coffee you drank right away was still in the "sweet spot" but the longer the Jogo stayed in the cup, the more bitter it would become from over-steeping/over-extracting.
Side note, I don't know if the FinalPress Kickstarter is related to the similarly named and styled FinalStraw, FinalFork and FinalSpork.

Though a nice concept, I fail to see a use case for it. For backpacking, space-wise you'd be better of bringing instant coffee (since you also need to bring coffee for the straw). And since the grounds stay in the beverage, you have the same LDL health issues as with a French press.
And even if you have the coffee and the hit water, you could still make coffee cowboy style.

One con to using straws of any sort: they cause gas. That doesn't seem like a big deal for most people, however, there are people with digestive issues (such as myself) where added gas is painful. I had been drinking water from a Britta water bottle, which uses a straw system, and once I quit using it, I felt so much better, and a lot of my issues went away. It seems like it's just a straw with a coffee filter on the end, in which case you could do this exact same thing, but instead of using this straw, just pour it through a coffee filter to get the grounds out. Then you have the choice to use a straw or not, and you don't have to worry about your coffee/tea getting stronger and stronger as it sits while you drink it lol. Like the straw isn't replacing a coffee maker, the process of making the coffee in the cup is. The straw is only making it so that you don't have to take a few seconds to filter the grounds out, while also making it so you must use a straw.
