I am sick of al the a bo9at anti-MacGregor crap on the internet, almost all of it by people who have never set foot on one and just don’t get it. If you want to cross an ocean, don’t buy a MacGregor. If you want to win sailboat races, don’t buy a MacGregor. If you want to impress your sailing friends with yards of teak, don’t buy a MacGregor. If you need to have a classic boat, don’t buy a MacGregor. All boat designs are compromises. I have an 18 year-old 26X. There are No stress cracks, the deck does not flex, neither does it have a wood core to rot, The rig is light weight and small for a 26 foot boat. This means that the boat won’t sail fast, but it is easy to put up ad take down. It places minimal stress on the boat. It stores well for travel. I don’t pay the boat yard a small fortune to launch and rig my boat in the Spring and to haul it and decommission it in the Fall. I live on it for two weeks every summer and sail it all over the coast of Maine. When the wind dies, I have a real motor, not some cranky 7 HP diesel that sounds and feels like it is tearing itself to bits. I can even actually go somewhere on the motor. Having water ballast inside the hull instead of a heavy keep means you give up initial stability and perhaps some pointing ability, but I can go to a crowded anchorage, raise the centerboard ad rudders, and drop the hook where other boats couldn’t go. I also lose 1500 bs of weight when I trainer it. The MacGregor will survive some serious weather without breaking, but it’s virtue is its ability to get away from the rough stuff and get to shelter. If worse comes to worse, it is self righting and has positive floatation. By the way, next summer, I [plan to trailer my boat to Vermont, pulled with a vehicle that Alonso makes sense as a daily driver, rig and launch it myself, explore Lake Champlain to the Canadian border, and bring it back to Maine. Try any of that in your Dana 24. “Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya choice.” The right tool for the job, etc.
Many commenters are missing the point. This is an RV for the water. It is about people having an experince on the water. I agree. It is not a good sailboat or motor cruiser. But getting rid of the smelly, noisy, toxic, auxiliary motor in the cabin with an outboard is incredibly appealing. Jealousy comes to mind here visa-vee negative commenters.
Interesting concept. It is the pop up camper in the world of luxury 5th wheels. Good way to get out on the water and have a good time without the high cost or maintenance of a more expensive or "true art of sailing boat". I sure some people sell their boats because the dream of boating was not the reality or they trade up once they get the sailing bug. My brother and I bought a small sailboat when we were 14 and 16 and didn't even know how to sail. As an adult I have been charter boat sailing in the Bahamas and lived in San Diego and joined two sailing clubs to be out on the water as often as possible without having to own a boat. I would have never thought to do those thing without first learning the basics of sailing. The same brother now owns a pontoon boat at his lake house and we still have fun being out on the water. I think it would be fun to explore different bodies of water on long weekends during the summer and be able to use it as a camper once at the destination. From the videos I've seen, owners like to do all sorts of modifications to suit there needs and have a great hobby in their driveway when not on the water.
I like this boat. This boat would get me from Key Largo to Bimini is 2-3 hours, regardless of the wind direction. Then I could sail around the Bahamas for weeks with a party of four. You get two beds, a kitchen, and a table and couch all at the same time, and you can stand up. Plus I could tow it overland to Key Largo with my 6 cyl Toyota Highlander. Yeah, I don't need to win any race, I just want to go snorkeling and have some fun. This thing looks perfect. Slide it up on a beach, have a bonfire. Beats the hell out of sleeping in coffin like quarter births to gain a few knots under sail. I might even be able to convince my wife to come along for a trip in a MacGregor 26m. I guess its all about priorities. I'd rather sleep good and have pleasant company than bragging rights, but thats just me.

@Fran Ra Thank you, that is good advice. Boats are expensive too. We live in the Midwest and keep a runabout for use on freshwater lakes. Skiing, wake boarding. I don't know much about sailing yet. I definitely would not feel comfortable running off into the great blue in command of any boat. For what its worth: I am beginning my ASA certifications this summer. My father, wife and I going to do the first class together. My intent is to work my way up to being able to bareboat charter. Given my location, and how often I frequent Florida and the Caribbean it will make much more sense for me to charter a 30 foot craft once I get there. Its all ready, in good shape, I don't have to tow it there, its bigger, more comfortable etc, we can just fly to the spot. There is no reason for me to own a boat like this for the intermittent use I would get on the coast. We are visiting both East and West coasts semi regularly and are starting to want to expand our experiences, so chartering is probably in our future. Now when we don't have to work anymore I could see getting a bigger boat and cruising the Caribbean for the winter months every year and storing it on the ground otherwise. Of course the Great Lakes do offer lots of cool cruising here in the MidWest, which we're also familiar with. Maybe we would get a MacGregor, there are plenty of places within a day's drive that offer cool on water multi day trips. You're right though, anytime a person is going to take their lives into their own hands they better know what it is they are risking and they better be informed about their own equipment. I agree with that 100%. I appreciate the thought and good intention.
I for one would love to have one of these. So much more technology went into these boats which is all shown in their videos. Not an Island Packet but a few 100k less too. Also remember these are motor sailers, motors like a cabin cruiser and can sail pretty good too. So they can do both but not extremely good at either and it basically says this in their videos. Example a fighter bomber can perform air to air and air to ground but not superior at either although very versatile and useful.

One won't find +128 of any othere model of sailboat for sale anywhere. I stopped looking after reviewing only 3 sales sites; leaving little doubt there's a lot more of them out there. Exactly what does a "bad market slump" have to do with selling anything? Bad market slumps affect 'demand' side of a market, not 'supply' side. I'd like to see the current sales figures for M26s, as well as resale values, unsold inventory, and totality of unsold used M26s available on the open market today.

macgregors are absolute junk........I would not in a million years take that crap out in anything larger than a back yard pond.....stress cracks all over the decks of all of them a total absence of quality cheap fittings that would never stand the test of time and a paper thin fiberglass layup along the lines of a bayliner..........nuff said make sure you wear a lifejacket and have a life raft at hand
the reason there are so many for sale is because they are bought by people with no clue about boating or boats whatsoever...so they buy it and scare themselves and decide that they don't like boating....so put it up for sale for the next person that knows nothing about boats or boating.......they buy the advertising crap that says they are a powerboat and a sailboat...yes they are and they do neither one properly.........please if your thinking about buying one of these do your family and friends a favour and look for a boat of substance designed by a reputable architect...and built by a proper boat building company so you can enjoy your time on the water and not live in fear............

For alot of people this is a perfect sailboat to start with even fresh out of the factory it's reasonably priced for a sailboat of its size and gives beginners or lake hoppers less to worry about with its ability to be pulled by a trailer
Please, no offense intended, but..... fail. This thing should not even be considered a sailboat. I find that although the ideas behind most of the systems are good ones, they have the feeling that they are just pieced together. Great idea for a pseudo-powerboat/sailboat, but, I guess blah. Would work alright as a day-sailer.
Works well as a weekender. I also go camping with my truck and a roof tent, but the Mac is more comfortable, and does that 'float on water' thing my truck can't do. Oh, and it sails, and motors and stuff. Quite fun.

Works best as a starter boat for people going into sailing from motorboating or people getting into sailing in general
