For me, this song isn't only about an unrequited love between two people. It's also about people loving you when you can't love yourself. When you're depressed to the point, nothing matters to you anymore. You don't have the energy to love yourself or love the people around you. But they love you anyway.

In 2015, I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure. Both of my kidneys failed so bad, they're practically useless. I was alone in New Zealand (I'm a Malaysian, went to Auckland for my bachelor's), no one was by my side when the doctor told me abt the bad news. I listened to this song on repeat every night before bed, and cried myself to sleep everytime. No one would ever love me when I'm this way, I thought. My body's broken and so was my spirit. My father flew to Auckland from home to be with me. The first thing he did when he saw me was he hugged me so tightly and said "Don't worry, I promise you I'll take care of you. You will never have to be alone anymore". And he's still here with me, through every tear, every surgery and every dialysis.
I thought I needed a man to take care of me. I forgot I have my Dad.

I love how so many different people can relate to this song: Aromantics, people who don't know or are inexperienced in love, people who feel like they are doing love wrong, people who feel insecure or unworthy, people who are from different backgrounds which might come in between them, people with mental health issues, people who don't feel love for the person but want to, people who lost feelings for the person, etc...

A friend once said to me "You can't find love if you can't love yourself". She didn't know how much it hit me because I realized that's the reason I never fell in love before or received that kind of love. I don't love myself, don't feel like I deserve love. this song is really personal to me. recently I found out that I'm aromantic, it means that I can't feel romantic attraction towards others and... that's sad. I've always felt out of place because I didn't know what love was like, and even though finding a label made me feel better about myself, sometimes I just get really anxious and sad because I'm scared of the future. I really wish I could love someone, but I know it's pointless because in the end, I would just end up hurting even more people, so I guess I need to face reality. this song comforts me and it's a way I can describe my feelings. thanks omam.

Emotions are often a weakness. I wish I could be like you so I could use your power to live only with logic and cut out all emotional needs.
Edit: Reply to some of the critics: Emotions are human nature. I won't get too philosophical on some comment section.
If you look into the philosophies such as Stoicism, Machevilian, and cynicism and Immanuel Kant's morality, you will understand that emotions are the biggest hurdle to self-control.
If a loved one of yours dies or a loved one of yours is in pain, we feel pain and may cry. But should we cry? Absolutely no, because if someone dies we can't do anything about it, and should just move on. I agree with you that love is everywhere and that is because we all are filled with love. Even I am human, it's just that I wish I was more Stoic and mentally stronger. I too am aromantic to a great extent but not completely emotionless, and that is because I'm human. But if you look closely, love is just an illusion. An illusion of human nature that we all are stuck with and can almost do nothing about. Logic on the other hand isn't.
I'm not trying to say that we should shatter our emotions and go completely selfish, (That is impossible), and not help each other. But rather, we should keep our LOGIC ABOVE EMOTIONS. And logic is helping society, being moral, and living with self-control.
Going on a toxic relationship and emotionally hurting yourself is not logic, that is your emotions at worst.
And about feeling out of place, well, that happens to me as well because I'm not like the people around me. All we have to do is go search for people similar to us.
Edit 2: I'm not saying emotions are irrelevant. I'm saying they are often a weakness. I do not consider logic and reason to be a social construct. Reason and ethics and knowledge is what allowed men to civilize and progress, while other creatures remained primitive. If your emotions make you want to rob a bank, does not mean you are supposed to go on and follow your emotions. I ask you to go and have a look at the man known as aristo who lived during the time of Stoic Philosopher Zeno. He believed we should abandon reason and always rely on our emotion (something like that) . Contemporary philosophers tried arguing with him that such ideas will lead to chaos and carnage. We can't abandon emotions, we simply can't. Attempting to do so is trying to fly on our own. What we can do is try not to follow it too much. For example, emotions instead reason is what often leads people towards toxic relationships. The result is chaos.

I tried many times cause people around me said “you just haven’t found the right person”
but whenever I tried lovers’ step, I was very uncomfortable with the acts.
At the end, all of them ended because they felt “I wasn’t like a lover” and I couldn’t change that way of acting and feeling. That’s just who I am.
But I can’t give a big talk about this i guess, since I don’t quite understand it myself.
I don’t know how to tell you, I love my family and friends. It’s just that I don’t love anyone in a romantic light.
I stopped trying after many failed attempts.
People feel and see that it’s just not it. I didn’t want it but i made them sad at the end of our relationships. I don’t want that anymore.
And besides the society making me think that I’m lacking, I am happy with the person I am.

Insane Jester That's great! Probly, it reminds you of something happy in your life. Diff people will have diff reactions to the same stimulus. The song itself is kinda heartbreaking, but to me it also has to do with the fact that it reminds me of the person who introduced me to this band and the time immediately afterwards, when she and I started drifting apart. If you pay attention to the lyrics, with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions, even the upbeat, jolly sounding tracks have melancholic lyrics. But maybe you'd rather focus on the happy tunes or like I said, maybe it brings you happy memories. XDD

The worst part of being aromantic is when you just don’t love someone back, not because you don’t want to, but because you just don’t feel what they feel, but even so you see everyone being so deeply affected by the rejection while you just feel nothing, no void no missing part no hole in your heart that needs healing, just nothing but seeing everyone react so differently makes you feel like the outsider that you are, they understand how the rejected one feels and why they are so hurt, but you just aren’t able to grasp why they feel that way and start questioning what it is you’re missing out on, if it is worth it to try and grasp this weird feeling you can’t reach yet you hesitate after seeing how hurt someone can get through it, but then you still try to taste this forbidden fruit, and you never reach it, you never taste the flesh, you never feel it in your palms, you never even find it in the first place. This is the story of a minotaur who have lost the way to back home when he was sealing for big adventures that land could offers to him.
One day he crossed the path of an ocean serpent that curiosly chase him underwater cause he have never seen a creature so different from him.
Minotaur at the point of full suffer lost all hopes to carry on and all he could do was to staring at his reflection on the line of the sea crying for being so stupid.
The ocean serpent watching at him felt that the loneliness was the same as him cause he was the most dangerous creature undersea and beacause of that anyone would stay in his company.
The serpent fell in love with the minotaur but he was too scared of the idea that once he would show up the minotaur would run away like evryone else.
So they both keep staring at their fears
Gray clouds over minotaur are full of his depressing feeling of loose it all.
The serpent absorbed in dark water of insicurity.

It's a shame that almost no one knows this song. It's an absolute masterpiece, from the soft and gentle music to the meaningful lyrics. This also reminds me of when I was a teen and I got into a car crash because a drunk driver collided with us. I remember the immense sadness from when no one came to visit me. The only one who did was my now wife. She was a close friend back then, but she was the only person out of my friend group who went to the hospital when I reached out to them telling them about my crash. I remember listening to the album this is from on repeat, because it gave me a little bit of happiness when I needed it. Thank you to Of Monsters and Men for being my favorite band and helping me get out of the pit of depression I was in after this.

As an aromantic individual who's had to break a few hearts, this song touches me a lot. I feel really bad that people think that I romantically love/like them and that when they build up the nerve to confess their own attraction, I have to reject them. I feel like I'm leading them on even though it's completely unintentional. I'm just not capable of loving someone in that way and it can't work because I feel like it would be unfair for them to give me that kind of love and for me to be incapable of reciprocating.

i've always translated this song as being sung from the perspective of a girl heartbroken over her love for a boy - feeling like she was never able to do it right, the way she feels like her love deserves. she feels unworthy, feels like he is one of the most important people to her, yet, cannot love him because there are so many others out there better for him. i thnk the minotaur is the girl, and the serpent is the boy - and there are plenty more fish in the sea, plenty more others who would better fit the beautiful serpent than a (wonderfully magical) land animal such as herself, and she feels like she is from a completely other world - one in which she will continue travelling throughout on her boat, constantly on the move, never settling for someone who just wants to simply swim along with her on her journey.

For me, this song always reminds me of the end of a relationship, where one person has fallen out of love for one reason or another and is trying to still love the other, but just can't for one reason or another; and the other still loves them and doesn't necessarily realize anything is wrong (or is trying to fix things or in denial if they do).

this song really hits different to me. i remember listening to this as a kid (yes, i'm a teenager) and relating to it, but i didn't know why quite. after years of self discovery and breaking a few hearts (which i regret, but that was for the better) i've discovered i'm aromantic asexual. sometimes it's hard to come to terms with that, because sometimes all i want is a romantic relationship and to feel those things- but i just don't experience it in the same ways. i also just really wish there was more of a community of aro ppl, but i think some of it is that arophobia and acephobia are definitely still very real. once i told the biggest ally i know- well, i didn't tell them i was, i was just vague about it- that i was aroace, and she basically said that aroace people are confused and haven't met the right people yet. and that really hurt. ive come out so many different times in my journey yet this is the scariest.

So there was a boy. We were good friends and I really thought we were soulmates. But we lived in different countries. I was so into him, but I didn't know he had a crush on me back then, but one day he just sent me this song. I never analyzed the song itself, but the melody was actually sad and the lyrics were sad as well. Even so, after a week or two, he became my boyfriend.
A little bit later, I realized that he was trying to say was that, even if we love each other, our love wasn't gonna be The Story of Love, the one literature sells to you, or even fantasy and stuff like that.
We were together for over a year, but we, indeed, couldn't love each other; not in the way we needed or deserved. We even broke ourselves so many times. Or at least me.
Sometimes I call him my first love, sometimes I don't. The truth is... that sometimes I want him back. Because even if I can't love him, I really want to love him.
I don't really think this song is about friend zone, no i think is more about that kind of persons that have a really hard times in their lives and they feel like they can't love nobody because they cant forget the pain, i think she wanna love him but she don't wanna suffer.

They could easily don't be friends, like simples strangers, you don´t have to be friend of every single person that you to tell them not "not i don´t want".
If they know they can't love they sound pretty close. From what they say in the song they sound very close.like holding tight all night etc. That's just how i see it.

In my interpretation of this song the fact she says she can't love him, doesn't mean she doesn't love him. Initially it seems as though she doesn't, but then she begins to reminisce about moments of closeness between them.
At that moment in the video you also see that the serpent is staring back at the minotaur. The song is about two people who should be together but are separated by circumstance. In the metaphor in the video the minotaur doesn't belong on the sea and would one day have to return to land.
I relate so much to this song. He deserves someone that loves him well, not like I do. And maybe I could love myself more, but I just don't have enough strength to make this out. And I'm really sorry for him

This song is hitting me hard, right in the feels. And i'm crying... "cause, ..it's my story. I cant forget, and i cant forgive me.
There was that guy, the sweetest i know, everything was just right with him. And we got together and he loved me more than i would ask. But.. i wasnt able to do the same. I wanted it, i really wanted, for one time, feel that sweet emotion. But nothing came and .. i broke his heart..., twice.
It's just until not long ago that i realised that i wasnt able to fell in love at all and,.... it's a bitter feeling to put a name on it.

I was kinda led to this song by a friend of mine who is aromantic. He wrote a story based on the entirety of the album it’s from (My Head Is an Animal) about a girl who has a meltdown relating to being pressured into telling her friends about her crush, which she can’t, because she’s aromantic, and she uses the album as solace.
Anyway, this song is really beautiful. I like that it can just be seen in a whole variety of love-related contexts.

the minotaur was the most powerful creature in all of the land and he never found anyone who could match his power. until one day when he was sitting on a beach he noticed something in the water and when he swam out to see what it was he met the sea dragon. she was the most powerful creature in all of the seas. he would try to hold his breathe under water to see her but he could only hold it for a few minutes. when she tried to meet him on land her scales would burn from the sun. so he would take time everyday to canoe into the ocean and spend time with the sea dragon until she decided to not waste his time anymore and stopped showing up. but she still descends to the bottom of the ocean to watch him
