My grandfather gave me my grandmother old recipe book and I typed all the recipe up and did a book for all the grandkids so everyone got a copy of granny's great recipes.
This is great! Not only present, but also future generations will appreciate your efforts to preserve this part of their family history. Thanks for sharing the 'how-to!'
Thank you for such a fantastic idea. When my parents moved recently, they opened up boxes that had simply been stored for decades. Turns out there are hundreds and hundreds of family photos, newspaper clippings, etc. This will be a nice way to share all the family history between 3 siblings. Maybe if I get started NOW, I can have them ready for next Christmas! :D
What a cool gift to give your dad, Lindsay. Scanning everything in high def must have made it so much easier for him to read all the articles, with no fear of damaging the originals which must be quite delicate now that they are so old. A great idea and something he will always treasure I'm sure. x
That is soooooo fantastic that you actually got all of that scanned. This has been an ongoing project for the last 8 years for me and it has come to a standstill. It just seems so overwhelming that I can't face it. I have large families on both sides and there is so much stuff. I hope that your video will give me the kick int the butt that I need to start up again. Thanks so much.
Love this idea Lindsay! You are so very lucky to have so much of your dads side of your family documented so well. It will mean so much to your children someday! Im sure he did love it! Xxx Chauchetta
What a wonderful treasure you have. I Love the way old newspaper articles are wrote. You did a fabulous job and who knows maybe one of your children will be into genealogy one day...they would have a great head start.
Have been sitting on a project just like this that I have not known what to do with. So happy you shared, will have it finished in no time now that I have direction. Another big thank you!!!!!
What a beautiful gift Lindsay! I scan so many things to keep. Been doing it for years! What a wonderful find of your family history and it going back soooo far! Great video! tfs
I just love this idea, I have a lot of clippings of our family and community. I also have many recipes from my Granny, written in her handwriting which are precious to me. Also her poems and stories she used to write down. Thank you so much for sharing this idea! Alice
That is the coolest gift ever!! I love family history and genealogy myself and think this is the best gift. I wish I had newspaper clippings. You're very lucky. And awesome tips on getting the yellow out and how to make it easier to read. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. It's wonderful that you have so much history on your family. Thank you for letting us view some of it. Also its a great way to keep the newspaper articles.
Wonderful! I've done something similar with old photos and made binders for my brothers and my kids one year for Christmas. They loved them. I'm hoping to add new pages to their books for next year. Love yours!!
This is awesome Lindsay. I have my husband's grandmothers bible and stuff from 1850 and this will help me to put together something for him that he can keep for years to come because the pages and stuff are getting so hard to read and some have faded to nothing.
Sometimes I want to give a BIG thumbs up. This is one of these times. You are to such inspiration in so many ways in your videoes. THANK YOU! This was so great. Want to wish you a happy new year!
WOW! What a Wonderful tersure to have of your family's history and memories for your Dad and your family to have and own, love family history even my own family history it's always very interesting to know where are family's came from and what they did!!! thank you for sharing!!! your family history with us all Lindsay! Hugs Liz x
Thank you Lindsay, this was excellent and at the perfect time. I've been doing genealogy myself now for about 6-7 years and have a scrapbook from my grandmother that looks similar to yours, so now I know how to go through send preserve specific articles.
Thank you Lindsay for another brilliant idea. At first I thought you would be having us spray with archival spray. But the scanning idea is just so much better. You not only save the paper, but improve it.
Thank you for this video! I have a huge pile of newspapers I have collected over the past 6 years with articles of family members that I want to keep but I am so overwhelmed. I thought I would scrapbook them but some are very long articles. This has helped a lot
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Lindsay how wonderful that your family collected and kept such treasures!!! and God bless your gg(g)?gpa on his longevity and things he did and saw! and to have been with A. Lincoln wow!!! how blessed. So glad your dad kept all that stuff and that you were able to scan/preserve them, share them, and gift them! :)
I have been doing this for years..but thanks for the reminder cause I have to do that with my sons football games clippings soon. Thanks for sharing all your tips ! hugs.... ~kmmer
Excellent information! Thank you so much. I kept the newspaper from the day my daughter was born and it has been turning yellow. (She is turning 8 this month). Now I know how to prerserve it for her!
That was such a thoughtful gift Lindsay. I think scanning them is the best solution, but I have sprayed newspaper clippings with Archival Mist and the one from Krylon. Thank you for sharing. Take care, Kim :)
Wow!! just what I need to restore some old newspaper clipping of my GreatGrand Father, and my GreatGrand Aunt who lived to age 105. She was a sassay woman and smart as a whip
Thank you I have so much old newspaper clips of my family tree. I need so much to send these to more family members. They have no idea how many I have. Now I can send then lighter clippings to see and keep. They are getting very brittle now. Some are over 80 yrs or more. Now with your helpful ideas. They will get the surprise of their lives from me. They know I have these. But in the past I have sent out item. And never got copies back. Never heard from any of the one I thought would help. Now I know if I send these out. I have the old ones to keep for future members. I know this is long. But OHHH how you have helped me. Love and a Great big THANKS YOUR WAY. B
That is really cool I have a lot of old little clippings I laminated them to protect the old clippings a bit longer. But I also scanned them just to make sure I had an extra copy in case I wanted to print some out for family. I should do this for old family letters and put them in a 8.5x11 ring binder.
Wow! My father in law is turning 94 next month. He's a Pearl Harbor survivor and I am making a scrapbook of various Pearl trips we've taken when the survivors got together. This means I can use reprinted articles on paper that will not damage anything else. By the way, I want to be like him when I grow up ( I'm only 67 lol.) His Christmas gift request was another sky dive; his first was at age 88 from 14,000 feet. Go Jack
I really enjoyed looking through the pages as you turned them. Would have also liked to read some of the articles that were about you family if they were in it. Isn't amazing how far you are able to track your family tree. Since my family came over from Russia, everything was left behind. And,my sister lost all the photos because she moved so many times. It saddens me. However, I have my own photos to pass on to my children. Thank you for sharing and Happy New Year to all. B
that is soo cool I wish my parents had done the same thing. amazing. I would have to read every single piece in that box!! thanks for the tips! Blessings
Great video! WOW...what an awesome discovery and awesome feat of what to do! You did an amazing job tackling this seemingly overwhelming task! Kudos to you! I'll bet that this present will always be the most precious ever! So happy for you and I am touched! (sorry...I am so maudlin!) TFS! xo
At the risk of sounding knitpicky, this isn't really about preserving the clippings themselves, which is what I was expecting: I thought we'd be getting a Lindsay recipe dupe for Archival Mist. But it is helpful I'm sure for those just wanting to preserve the information.Sounds like you come from good healthy stock, Lindsay! :D Really nice and thoughtful project and gift.
Can you do a tutorial of a scrapbook page with souvenir things that you have gotten from trips? Like tickets of a concert or airplane ticket or something?
I found your channel through Derral Eves video and absolutely LOVE it! So many great ideas and amazing tips! I think I'll have to watch all of your videos:) This particular video comes very handy and timely for me. We have some old newspaper clippings with articles that mean a lot for our family. I was always concerned how to preserve these clippings. Your clever idea might be the solution I was looking for. Thank you.
Great idea! I have a huge box full of newspapers and clippings that I need to sort by family and get a little more organized. I do have a question. Have you ever done a family heritage scrapbook? I have boxes and boxes of old photos from current all the way back to the 1800's on both sides of my family. Do you happen to have any suggestions on how to organize my albums? I am thinking of doing an album for my Dad (I have already finished one for my Mom), and one album on each grandparent's family since I have so much. I appreciate any help you can give me.
I have, but I didn't have much memorabilia, so it was pretty easy. I started with a family tree on the first page and then added photos in chronological order. People can flip to the family tree in the front if they want to know how someone is related.
Lindsey, did you notice there was an article with a pic of Ann Frank on one of the pages. It was on the right-hand page, and her pic was in between two men's. I was just curious if it had any thing to do with your family. Or was just something your gramma found interesting. Yours is one of the original "scrap books." Several presidents kept them. It wasn't until the. Last couple of generations that we started making them more personal. I love old things like this. Your local historian would probably love seeing it. TFS, hugs Jess
I just found your video. I have my grandmother’s high school graduation scrapbook that her mother made for her in the 1920s. The pages have photos glued on them and captions written underneath. Some of her friends wrote notes to her on the pages. The pages are fragile and are deteriorating. The scrapbook is a bit on the large side. What would you recommend? I’m not sure scanning is possible because of the page size. I am not a crafter so I don’t have supplies and tools. I need help please. Thank you!
Lindsay, Thanks for this! My father was a great athlete. I have tons of newspaper clippings of his accomplishments. What type of paper did you print on? What type of scanner did you use? I have old equipment and plan to buy all new equipment including up to date computer. I am excited about doing this! Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this, Emi! I was very interested in your old book as well as your techniques. I have many relatives from China, Maine and Clinton, Maine on my mother's side. Have you thought about publishing the old book as an ebook? I would be interested in purchasing a copy!
I have a question please. I have a very old newspaper clipping it is very worn. Should I secure it with a like self laminationg white back, hes adhesive so I can let it lay flat, then laminate on a black background. I am worried the adhesive will make it degrade further. Then I thought well its sealed twice. Bad idea?
First I would scan it. If I were to laminate it I would use a heat laminator because I am afraid the adhesive in the self laminating pouches might yellow it more over time. Laminating is permanent though so be sure you want to keep it that way. If you want to glue it to a cardstock first use an acid free PVA glue and make sure it is totallydry before you laminate
Danke Lindsay, abgesehen von deiner SchwertGoschen, ein wundervoller Beitrag. Do you have any ideas-sources - I have files, with paper clippings, tons of, some pasted on both sides. Could you share some wisdom on how to handle that ?
What I did was create a database to house all of years of clippings. Using an iPhone coupled with the database, everything is organized under its own category, date, subject, person, place, etc. Easily searchable. That way, the original clippings are not damaged. I see that exact zoom-able picture on the iPad or iPhone. Then if need be, I can print as many copies as needed. Or email them to friends. I even enter the newspaper name in their image to give it the eye appeal of the real clipping. Let me know if you or anyone is interested in such a database to house hundreds of thousands (if need be) of clippings. I made this database because I saw nothing on the internet that would show me the exact article which I can read from and at the same time be able to create search words for each article. It's great to be able to show friends immediately the clippings or articles that date back to 1910. Anywho, if you or someone you know needs an organizer like this, let me know.
In leu of scanning, Why couldn't you take a picture of each page...then edit via computer.... My printer is not the best, but I would put all on a thumb drive and take it to a quality printer...maybe Kinkos or Office depot. Comments welcome
My grandfather gave me my grandmother old recipe book and I typed all the recipe up and did a book for all the grandkids so everyone got a copy of granny's great recipes.

Is printer ink all the same or is there some high quality ink I must use? I always thought printer ink would fade/run over time.

I have old equipment and plan to buy all new equipment including up to date computer. I am excited about doing this! Thank you!
Acid free cardstock. I used an HP printer.
What did you end up doing with the original clippings then?
Gave them back to my parents.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Emi! I was very interested in your old book as well as your techniques. I have many relatives from China, Maine and Clinton, Maine on my mother's side. Have you thought about publishing the old book as an ebook? I would be interested in purchasing a copy!

very helpful tips, thanks
Thanks so much great tips

What if you don't have a scanner? What are the options?
You can have them color copied at Staples or another copy place
How do you make the paper stick
Great info yes I have over 700 articles of my sons athletic career lol I have to get all archived newspapers first lol
Wow! A star athlete. You definitely want to preserve those.
Danke Lindsay, abgesehen von deiner SchwertGoschen, ein wundervoller Beitrag.

good
Awsome
thnx
Well how she's handling the book in the first place ouch
Question
What are the technique used for preserving and conservation material
you can use a deacidification spray on old clipping you want to preserve. Archival Mist and Preserve it by Krylon are two choices.
