- Why didn't r/Place happen in April or June? What crazy series of events caused so many people to expect it to happen in the first place? This video chronicles the compelling evidence and borderline insanity which was NoPlace.
UPDATE: The details of this video were indeed pointing to a new r/Place event! It took place July 20th - 25th.
I really wasn't planning to make a video for r/Place 2023, but after it didn't happen, I knew I had to share the story that led us to this point. From the outside, we were crazy. Maybe we still are. But hopefully this video can give you an inside look at the preparations which took place. Was it all in vain? Is Reddit simply waiting until I upload this video to launch r/Place?! [Update: yes they were.]

I personally believe this was just a massive long con April Fool's joke that Reddit staff just had a ton of fun selling. I actually tuned into your stream for a bit to enjoy the joke myself.

You should've mentioned how 4 mods joined the splinter server, it made it more legitimate and also gave us the knowledge of how it was a rouge mod and not a collective decision

Was a bit disappointed it didn’t start but it was a lot of fun to hang out with everyone on the livestream.
It was still fun to watch your stream. It was weird. It was exciting waiting for something but nothing came. I was getting vietnam flashbacks of the void destroying everything in its path and the soldiers who fought back. But yeah Derpy is the best streamer.
I'm just now realizing this was posted before this year's r/place was revealed. The ending of this video caught me off guard.

In hindsight I think it was good that it didn't happen, given what's happening over at reddit atm, but I was really invested and excited.
At least you got a bunch of new members, so the stream wasn't a complete bust ;p
I see the theme of the r/place video thumbnails referring to actual historical events. WW1 for 2017, WW2 for 2022, the Cold War for this video. Now that r/place actually happened (literal days after this came out), the most challenging thing would be choosing a historical event big enough to name the video after.
Amazing video. It sure was an experience waiting for r/place so patiently and then realizing that it's not happening.
At least we all had fun with getting ready for it, lmao.

No way thats me! I put incredible amounts of effort into dissecting the reddit client(s) source code for information and clues on r/place, and that's still going! All the changes made in the app are still there to this day, theres even more r/place related changes and hints that never even got covered here, and I still archive and note every r/place related change in every new version of the reddit apps. I personally will not be giving up on this hypothetical r/place event until the code that still lingers in the website and app is removed. I just have my doubts that Reddit would spend months of development time on this just to never use it. I'm sure Littleshy will keep y'all updated if anything exiting does come of it!
Trust me when I say there is a LOT more that goes on behind the scenes than the things shown in this video. I looked over the script for this video and ensured everything within it was accurate to the best of my knowledge, and theres just... so much to talk about and it's hard to condense that.
Huge thanks to Littleshy for making this video. It may have seemed like "nothing" happened, but it brought tons of people from tons of different backgrounds together and created friendships and communities that would have never existed otherwise. As disappointing (and/or relieving) as NoPlace was... it was cool (and exhasting) to play such a big part in it.
You know, watching this video after the 2023 r/place event has come and went was surreal. I didn't know people had thought that was going to happen at all this year. But then again, it was only this year that I even learned r/place was a thing so I've not really gotten into any of the current r/place talk just yet. It is kinda funny that I had found out about r/place being up and running was by a community post about a youtuber's artwork being attacked and the first thing I thought about was if the Bronies had knew this was happening and had the time to prepare.
What an absolute fustercluck. Thanks for detailing all this for everyone who missed it!

Afraid not. My understanding is that the server was run by an individual and it's not practical for them to keep it open constantly. There are lots of non-brony Place clones elsewhere though!

And if I may clear something up, we didn't mind bots, we didn't use them ourselves but to quote a mod "If you want to use it we don't care but we arn't using them as a group"
Dude we had a splinter group and nearly had a civil war over that. Either our leaders are incompetent or it wasn't that simple.
It wasn't that there was an actual rule against bots in the alliance, it was that, intentionally or not, we made a promise not to use them to the other alliance members, and if we hadn't made that promise we wouldn't have passed the vote to enter the alliance.

@@The-Anomalous Honestly I wasn't happy about it when it first happened, but I'm happy with how everything turned out. You could say it might have actually been better in some ways to avoid bots even. Who needs bots when you have friendship?

Interesting. Without any context, and having only saw your livestream in my sub feed, my initial assumption was that Reddit did a last-minute r/place as a cheap attempt to win back loyalty to the site. But I was wrong and this is a much more interesting story than I initially assumed

I'll be honest, I straight up did not know about ANY of this until this just got recommended to me. It was super fun participating in r/place and helping my fellow bronies, defending from streamers and the like, and now I finally understand what everybody in the discord meant when they were talking about "P3ACE". Amazing video!
It was an honor to prepare for the 3rd Crusade with you all!
I suspect they chickened out for fear of what protesters might draw...

So yeah, funny story about that, the group I (would have) led that was planning this piece of protest art, dubbed Black Company, somehow led to the P3ACE alliance getting in talks for cooperation (or at the very least, a non-aggression pact) between itself and The Swarm, the faction behind the ever expanding black blobs back in 2017 Place and 2022 Place. The Swarm and April Knights have a long history of rivalry and I cannot overstate how much of a radical shift in policy on both factions' end this decision to work together represented. Reddit pissed off its userbase so much that The Swarm and the canvas' largest defensive alliance led by their sworn enemy *were allied.* That's how bad it was.
Coincidentally, my birthday is the same as Reddit's so I spent half of my B-day waiting for Pixel War 3.
I had so much fun waiting and coping with y'all. Hope to be with you on actual Place.

heya, the P3ACE guy here with the thing about botting in the brony alliance.
Theres a slight issue you didnt point out to in the video, that being that the P3ACE debacle was not purely about autoclickers but also bot and bot automation scripts, as well as lying about those previously.
Its probably not done on purpose but an important clarification imo
I like to think that the use of auto clickers/scripts is an effective use of ingenuity, used in the creation and defence of our own art.
It shows that while the faction may be small, it is still mighty in its own way.

Reddit's downfall is honestly one of the saddest things to happen to the modern internet. It was the only place that was actually great and not plagued by drama and toxicity. Where do we go next? We'll be asking ourselves that for a long time.
oh reddit was plagued by PLENTY of drama and toxicity, believe me. the thing im worried about is help subreddits being pretty much wiped, erasing important information. i know one of the trans subreddits is archiving everything, we can only hope not too much information is lost

Wasn't the reddit strike in April and June and lost a lot of backers and traffic to their site then they hoisted the R/place to get people to come back so Reddit could get them stonks back up.

I am one of the few person happy that it didn't happen. Don't get me wrong, I get the excitement around it, and feel a bit of it myself. But also, people post tons of screenshot of r/place on subreddits while it take place, and the bright colours and chaos were painful with my disability. I was dreading the return of r/place.
