    Dozens of seemingly similar videos on youtube and it's you who effectively explains what's going on and how to get results, all in less than five minutes. Thank you VERY much. That was enlightening in more than one way! I added to my favorites and even downloaded your video to have as a reference.

    Thanks Josh - great explanation of setting up a white background and some of the lighting that accompanies the production. I've been struggling with my background and now I know, that it has a lot to do with the lighting, not just the white surface.

  • @DrLauren

    Could we just tack the sheet to the wall itself and skip the scaffold to hang the backdrop? Would the lighting work the same?

  • @ChinmayH

    Thanks this surely helped. Ironing the backdrop is not always possible and makes editing a nightmare. I already have the soft boxes, need to angle it to the backdrop instead of the subject and use some bounce flashes to light up the faces. Awesome.

    im pretty new at this. i have 2 questions. 1: where is the shadow? And why is it gone XD 2: what if you dont have two of these expensive lights?

  • @MarkHinchey1
    @MarkHinchey1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    A decent cheap solution. One critique though. You don't really want to use a hair light because there is no need to separate the subject from the background since the background is pure white. Edge highlights can bleed into the background and actually do the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish.

    • @davidaustin6962
      @davidaustin6962 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Nick Manning You don't need what he recommends. Do it for $38. Kingso 4 pack sockets (with cords) for $19, get 8 total. Have a bedsheet, duct Tape and a wall? A bunch of cardboard boxes? Aluminum foil (put them in the boxes)? That's all you need. What he doesn't mention is how much difference a good video camera makes. That's your big ticket item. If you don't have one, get one on ebay and sell it on ebay when you're done ... the difference will be shipping ... what $10? Now, go. do it.

    • @davidaustin6962
      @davidaustin6962 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually you'll probably want to get some foamboard (or cardboard with foil) to help direct some of the light from the back lights so they don't reflect on the person. He would look better if he did that, which he didn't. Also, he doesnt' mention this but you can zoom up on the person, record it in portrait, then insert into a larger white landscape orientation when editing. Makes more sense since you don't have to light us much background that way and since it's white you can move the person in the video around the final frame wherever you want him.

  • @alikhawar520
    @alikhawar520 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice effort, but you still need those softboxes to pour light on your face. In this particular video, only sides of your face and body are getting a little bit of light from the softboxes. But the middle part is being lit by that nasty looking orangish bulb in the room. For videos with white backgrounds, you mostly need white light to illuminate your face and body, unless if you are purposely going for some specific look. I think a better solution would be to lower down the light of one of those softboxes and have them both caste light on your face from the front. And use several cheap clamp lights to light the background.

    Josh, I am using the same set up as you and probably the same lights. However, what I get is a darker spot in the CENTRE. Any idea why this is so? I have seen other instruction videos that use a bulb, in other words without the shield around the bulbs as in these lights. Could that be the problem, the hood is limiting the throw of the lights? Thanks!

    the CFL bulbs that you're using, how powerful are they? I mean what is the wattage or each bulb and light output in Lumens?
    I'm using 4 LED bulbs (20 watt each = 2000 lumens) in each softbox but I' don't think it's enough. plus light is not spreading well on the background... it's creating a gradient on the background. Can you please help?

    I am using four 4000 lumen Studio Pro CFL bulbs and a white sheet. I have never done this before, but it does not appear that the bulbs are powerful enough to overexpose the sheet and create an infinite white background. I don't know what I am doing wrong or what to do now. The studio Pro bulbs were not very expensive. Do you think they are not really producing as many lumens as the manufacturer claims or am I just not using them properly? They are huge bulbs and I even tried putting them as close as a foot away from the sheet and there's just not enough light.

    • @swallowtailphotostudio354
      @swallowtailphotostudio354 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may need to adjust the exposure on your camera or adjust the levels in post-production to make the white background clip and create the infinite white background. You could also use more bulbs to bump up the light higher if you feel that is part of the issue.
