It's so sad to hear Roger mention Greg Moore, he could have gone on to such great success in CART and even Indycar with Penske in the coming years, and who knows, maybe he'd be in that Penske #3 in the IRL today. RIP Greg, never forgotten.

CarlsonsRaiders well and Gonzalo Rodríguez died the same year. I can’t imagine them having their future picked and then gets stripped from them. Greg Moore was such a talent

AJ’s My Daddy actually gonzalo rodriguez in his first race clasified better than unser jr. It makes me sad that we could not see what rodriguez and moore could achieve being so talented

I think Roger had tentative plans for a Greg Moore/Gonzalo Rodriguez lineup at Penske for 2000. He could have pinned the next decade of his team on those two. Greg was better known in North America, but Gonzalo had shown in F3000 just what a classy talent he was. Little could we imagine what was to come... :-(

So basically the broadcast missed most of the accidents and passes.
Great race otherwise. Great video, thx for the upload.

@panachski i'm agree with you. The talent of latin blood just like Montoya. Can you realise the fact that it was the first race of Gonzalo on a turbo charged car (double power than a F3000) and on a street circuit?? And the fact that he achieved one point in that regrettable car! A fantastic driver and a terrible lost.

Gonzalo iba a ser sustituto de Al Unser jr.
Ahora que lo menciono hubiera sido interesante que lo incluyesen en el documental de Gonchi.

Dario Franchitti: You aaaaaaalways have to be worried about Montoya!

@azapro911 Montoya told once that he only felt afraid when Gonzalo was in his mirrors. Good memories of good times in F3000.

@azapro911 PS: I know Roger said he'd signed Gil for 2000, which is why I say tentative. He signed Gil before he'd seen Gonzalo in one of his cars in race conditions. And hey, they'd run three cars before! :-)

Was never a fan of Belle Isle, not a lot of passing. But I love these old CART races. TY for the upload.

So many levels of sad 5:35 when Penske announces he's letting Little Al go and hiring de Ferran and Greg Moore for 2000, and then Little Al's reaction. You can tell both men are in serious pain about it. It's well known that once you've been at Penske and are let go, it's a humiliation to do anything but retire...everything else is seen as a step down (although that had changed a bit by '99) and also more importantly, we all know now the real reason he was fired: Al's substance abuse. Which ultimately left him broke, estranged from his family, and with a gun to his head on his 50th birthday, seriously considering suicide. They came up with a BS PR spin that it was because he wanted to run at Indy again, but the entire paddock knew the real reason (always keep in mind that whatever you're told in situations like that, it's never, ever the truth.) Thankfully he chose life, and he finally got better and is living a clean, sober and happy life. Then of course Greg...a guy on the brink of big time superstardom...big money, the biggest team, a truly unlimited future. All gone, in one spin, just a couple months later. It's one brutal sport. Like Hemingway (think it was him) said, "there are only two sports: mountaineering, and auto racing. The rest are just games."

Yeah you're right, the Indycar layout was bad but they are switching to the CART layout starting with this year's race.

Thank you for share this race. This was the first and last Gonchi Rodriguez Cart race, and he achieved one point in that dreadful penske car. Check my channel to see Gonzalo Rodriguez videos.

35:22 Huh. So Chicago wasn't the only time that Magnussen did that.
Good to see that he already knew the 'American' way of Open-Wheel Driving. LOLZ.

Nowadays we would have demanded cars with improved safety and boycotted the entire series if two drivers in the same series died in one year. That's just not normal. Formula 1 has the right idea of putting safety first these days. That's why they haven't had any deaths since 2011. Indycars are still more unsafe than they need to be especially because they are racing on a lot of huge ovals with poor safety implements for the drivers.

There was not an f1 driver death in 2011 but in Indycar, we did lose Dan Weldon and in 2015 we also lost Justin Wilson. In f1 2014 Jules Bianchi crashed out at Suzuka and died due to complications from injury in 2015.
