As someone who spent a huge amount of time playing Game Boy til the late 90s I found the Street Fighter II port to be acceptable in comparison to the atrocities the Mortal Kombat mobile ports had inflicted upon a generation.
Mobility seem more fluid than Mk or I should say the control of the play. Pulling out specials in MK was tough on game boy. But I only had MK never played StF
I think the biggest drawback of Street Fighter 2 for the Gameboy is its release date. Had it been ported at the same time as the SNES port like other fighters had done (MK games, Killer Instinct), I think it would have been better received for what it is. It still wouldn't have aged well but in another universe, maybe Capcom would have considered making GB ports for Turbo and Super. MK2 on the GB showed that frame rates in fighting games didn't have to be so sluggish. Street Fighter 2 on the GB borrows from Super Street Fighter 2 in aesthetics and gameplay. Had Capcom tried to make it an actual port of Street Fighter 2, it could have maybe been more faithful with the full roster of 8 fighters. Doubt they could have squeezed in all 4 bosses but a final fight with M. Bison would have been serviceable. Releasing the game in 1995 allowed Capcom to have a better idea of the GB's capabilities more so than in 1992 but the game doesn't exactly push the hardware.
PC Engine had what was considered an "8 bit" CPU, but had a "16 bit" GPU and was able to display far more on screen colors than the Mega Drive/Genesis, more similar to the SNES. PCE version was missing one background scroll and music wasn't as good as SNES or arcade, but overall it was a fantastic "8 bit" port, in line with the true "16 bit" consoles of the time. So PCE version was easily the best 8 bit version and depending on who you ask, possibly the best 16 bit version too!
@@emailchrismoll Yeah. Higher quality voices, music taken straight from the original arcade game and maybe some parallax scrolling thanks to the extra RAM
"You can improve the experience by playing it on the Super GameBoy on the SNES." That's not playing Street Fighters II with extra steps, that's playing Street Fighters II with your knees capped.
I remember this. I actually have a copy, it was entertaining at the time. But!! After I played the King of Fighters 95 for the gameboy, I realized that SF could've been better . (MK 2 was also pretty awesome)
To be fair SNK did a way better job at converting their fighting onto their 8bit handheld. The NeoGeo Pocket Color has a lot of the major fighting games the home consoles had.
Still made to this day. The Master System was the best system I ever owned. So many memories of games that were exclusive to the console. I never ever regretted asking for this instead of an NES for Christmas. I got it the year they offered the then new Double Dragon or Reggie Jackson Baseball for free with the purchase of the console.
Very good expose on these 8 bit ports! Are there any good fighting games on the Game Boy? I know of 2: Mortal Kombat 2 and Battle Arena Toshinden! Considering the PSone original Toshinden isn't that console's best fighter (it would at least tide you over til Tekken came along), the Game Boy version with its anime art style is a hidden gem! If I told you about all the games I'd like to see on the Evercade, we'd be here all day! But I can say that I'd like to see a Sparkster cart which also features iOS title Krazy Kart Racing, and Bionic Commando, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden carts that also feature, in ebook form, each franchise's corresponding Worlds of Power novelization!
I know it came out earlier than the Game Boy edition, but maybe US GOLD could've done something similar and slimmed down the roster to make more room for other things like music, or a second input button?! at least they tried to do full-size sprites... the only one of these outside the Game Boy one I'm familliar with was the Master System version, I remember finding the ROM of it in the early 2000s when I was first getting into emulation... I heard the story about how huge the SMS was over there STILL! so seeing them get a port of SF2 was freakin' wild! I have also played some of the Famicom bootleg versions of SF2, nothing mindblowing but it's neat to see SF2 on NES! I heard about sf2 deluxe though, will be interesting to try when it comes out!
The Master System was way more capable than most US gamers ever realized. Nintendo cut them off at the knees with their licensing and exclusivity deals, though.
I remember seeing in magazines, there were various ports. But 8bit.. oh k.. there is only so much that format can do. I only played the arcade, Genesis / MD, and SNES. (On a friend's system) I don't know how to comment on this. But I guess it has its audience?
I never even knew it had released on the game boy. Although I was 14 in 1995. and by then i was more interested in girls than i was handheld games. In fact I think I'd stopped gaming altogether by 1995.
All the original home console versions were demakes of sorts. The SNES captured Street Fighter II best at the time. Everything else was trying hard to be an adequate home version of the arcade experience. This was just the way things were when arcade machines were lucrative (worth investing in the best game technology) and home computer components were made out of dog hair, pigeon feathers and old shoes to save money. You can't expect the Spectrum to run a good version of Street Fighter when you have to wind it up on the side to make it do bleeping noises.
Sure it could. The Spectrum's got a Z80 running at the same speed as the Z80 in the Game Gear, and that console has a great version of Fatal Fury Special. It's just a question of how much loading you're willing to suffer through, and what sacrifices you're willing to accept. You'd need some talented sprite artists to make the demake appealing, and more development time than US Gold was going to pay for, but that's not a hardware limitation.
King of Fighters '96, Real Bout, and two Samurai Shodown games say otherwise. Plus World Heroes Jet. And Toshinden. And Killer Instinct. And so many more games that have smooth frame rates. The Gameboy has the best 8-bit fighting game library ever made.
In Russia was Dendy, on Dendy was only version of this game (before megadrive). And of course that wasn't only pirate exclusive, there was also Aladdin, Lion King, Earthworm Jim, Boogerman, Mortal Kombat and more...
If I were Capcom, the 8-bit ports would go: GAME BOY • Street Fighter I • Street Fighter 2010 GAME BOY COLOR • Street Fighter II • Street Fighter II' PLUS • SUPER Street Fighter II • Street Fighter Alpha • Final Fight
As for the GB version, I don't think it is a case of function over form, as much as it is of form over function: they tried too hard to make large, detailed sprites that look close to the arcade, when smaller detailed sprites would have allowed for a more fluid gameplay; see SF Alpha for GBC as an example of what could have been: m.th-cam.com/video/iRkgPxU2hxc/w-d-xo.html
Oh, I'll take the way the Game Boy port plays over the way the IBM-PC port plays any day of the week. You also gloss over the hugest flaw of the Master System version: There are NO character endings. The Game Boy port has them, if you play them on normal or higher, but the SMS version has none on any difficulty setting.
Fortunately Capcom did a much better job with Street Fighter Alpha on the Gameboy Color. Especially in terms of speed and frame rates, even though the sprites took a bigger hit in detail. Still would rather play Alpha on GBC than 2 on the B&W
The Neo Pocket (Color) fighting games (SNK Vs Capcom, Fatal Fury, etc) were amazing though... I guess technically they're 16 bit, but they really look 8 bit.
I was so disappointed when I got street fighter 2 for the gameboy, but after seeing this I guess it could have been alot worse!! Great video I would love to see the NES deluxe game!!
There's actually good port of Street fighter that work on 8 bits machines : - "Street fighter 2" on PC-Engine : One of the best port ! It suffer by the need of a 6 buttons controller to fully play it. Could be potentially e played on the Turbo Grafx-16 (just a rebranded PC-engine) but that machine don't have official support for the 6 buttons controller. - "Street fighter Alpha" on Game boy color : Less detailed background, smaller sprites but better animation with a far better gameplay than SF2 on game boy. Not the arcade feeling at all but simply an enjoyable game.
I always thought the gameboy port was fairly well done considering the hardware. I mean I've seen many many much worse ports. I think this was one of my first Gameboy Pocket games.
I sort of like the look of Street Fighter 2 on the ZX Spectrum. It would not like to play it, but I would probably hang a screen capture of it on my wall.

These are all unplayable. And playing Street Foghter Alpha on the GBC really shows no excuses why this couldn’t be fun. The graphics of course are rubbish, due to system limitations, but you can still make a fun game. The Takara efforts prove that too when it comes to other fighting games, and the GBC Street Fighter. Saying that, I think the still shots for the Gameboy in this video look pretty good for a low res game boy interpretation. And the characters are rather large. The frame rate and lag is what ruins it.
Na I sense some bias towards the SMS here. The game plays about as terribly as the others. I feel the Gameboy edition is the best of the 8bit conversions despite the lack of colour and insane input lag. It still plays much better than the others. That said the game could have been made to play better when you compare to other fighting games on the Gameboy like. Mk2, Battle Arena Toshinden, Samurai Shodown, King of Fighters 95 and 96. Even Killer Instinct is better

Give it a week and Lady Decade will be doing the same video
Got confused when you called the commodore 64 American 👀😅
It...existed over here and had its fans but it was many times more popular in Europe. Im my head, i think of it as a European platform
I totally get that especially when we take into account that Jack Tramiel was Polish too!
Tiger electronic Street Fighter II... wtf
What are you talking about fella?
It was every nintendo fan boy's wet dream and a scientific miracle for GB.
Have you ever seen other GB games?
The women in the thumbnails just keep getting hotter and hotter.
This is getting confusing. Watching 2 channels for 1 series haha
Also, is Jackie Chan's head on Chun Li?
That's actually jackie chan dress up as chun li. It's from the movie, city hunter.
I like this game. 🤷🏾♂️ U asking for too much of the GB especially for the yr it came out.
I liked the GB SF2 port lol
