It's so true when you can make your instrument sound like it's you. Both brothers have their iconic sounds. What a legacy to achieve such tones. Thanks for the tattoo of being the tone chasers.
This guy was similar enough to Hagar that the transition wouldn't have been too jarring, yet unique enough in style (both singing and songwriting) that this incarnation could have gone in it's own direction. Not been just a throwback. The sky could have been the limit with Malloy. They screwed up with that MTV stunt and lost him. They really screwed the pooch. And they never really recovered from it.
As a huge fan of all VH, I think no matter who came in after Hagar the VH mega-run was over! IMO VH III was decent with Cherone! To me it’s not all about the front man! I just dig the VH sound! They had a great run! I do wish Mitch had his chance! I’m sure it would been a great album! Chances are it would of had similar results if not worse of VH III. Music is always changing and it was time for the kings to fall!
@@chaddrumm6809 I respect your right to have your own opinion. From my point of view, Cherone was a terrible fit for Van Halen. Not a bad guy, and actually a genuine talent, it just did not mesh. What he did just did not inspire songs that worked. And he did not seem to have the kind of energy that got through to EVH like Roth or Hagar that inspired EVH to make music that did work. By that point, however, it also seems like the VH brothers were no longer capable of listening to anyone and locked on a crash course to failure. You see this happen to a lot of bands once founding members leave. Remaining members inherit total control of the band, and anyone new, no matter how good, does not have the pull or decision making input to influence the outcome of projects. It became the Ed and Alex show, not the Van Halen or Van Hagar of old. Then, they ejected Michael Anthony, ensuring that nothing could ever be the same. I think Edward came to regret these things, but not until it was too late and his health had declined to where there was not time to rectify the situation. Too many missed opportunities where the moment should have been seized and things should have been set right "Right Now". We still have those moments where it did work, and it was amazing. But it is too bad we never got to see that true Van Halen reunion, perhaps even with Roth and Hagar both. Even Roth said on many occasions he did not understand why Anthony was not brought back into the fold. He should have been. Roth himself neglected opportunities to reunite with his classic Eat Em and Smile band and for that, also, it seems to be too late now as well with Mr. Roth's retirement from performing. We will have to be content with our music and memories.

Don't blame MTV for that. If anything, blame Ray Daniels, their manager at the time. He was a big proponent of them getting DLR back in the band. Also, I'm sure that Warner Bros had a hand in getting them to appear with Dave to promote their "Best Of" album.
The most rare VH song in existence. And the guy WAS a member of the band, so they've had four singers, not three. Great song. Kind of reminds me of the chorus in "Right Now", and the verses of "Top of the World".

Man this would have made a killer Van Halen song, if only they would have finished it. All that's missing is Mike's signature background vocals and of course, one of Ed's phenomenal guitar solos at 2:24 in this track.

Any musician who is a decent human being would have talked to a lead singer they were about to bring in the band and explain what was about to happen. They did not consider Mitch when they made the decision to do it and, essentially, sent him on his way.

These vocals were recorded many years later. I say there’s one thing missing: While he was finishing this up, he should’ve invited Michael Anthony to contribute background vocals.
I now wish they'd gone with Mitch Malloy and that I'd heard this for the first time about 5 years ago! And as for Eddie, it still kills me that we lost someone so lyrical, rhythmical and brilliant so early. Note perfect and sooo in sync with Alex.
I imagine VH was being pressured into a DLR reunion. Mitch might have helped VH into a similar direction as Sam Halen. Its tough seeing Ed so thin in some of those clips. Ive wondered if the bad hip caused a painkiller addiction in addition to all the other issues. He became such a different person & its so sad things had to get so rough.

This guy is an extraordinary singer. Very Sammy like. I can understand why they went with Cherone. It's a totally different thing. Many people says that Gary couldn't fit. The thing is, VH could fit with Gary and do something artistically different. That what artists do. Art.
Molloy was pretty much signed up to VH but suddenly the band appeared on mtv with Roth to do an award because mtv said they wanted Roth to appear . Molloy was gobsmacked with not being told and decided there and then it wasn’t the gig for him . The van halen brothers really cocked this one up and went on to flop with Cherone in a big way . For me though it all just adds to the intrigue of this incredible band .

Don't blame MTV for that. If anything, blame Ray Daniels, their manager at the time. He was a big proponent of them getting DLR back in the band. Also, I'm sure that Warner Bros had a hand in getting them to appear with Dave to promote their "Best Of" album.

@@jacksonmiller6679 Actually, by walking out onto the MTV award stage with DLR, they did let MM go... Any musician who is a decent human being would have talked to a lead singer they were about to bring in the band and explain what was about to happen. They did not consider Mitch when they made the decision to do it and, essentially, sent him on his way.
After seeing him front Great White I'd say nothing was lost. This was not the guy. He just sounds like every 80s power ballad singer.
@@michaelwill7811 They were pressured by MTV and management. The reason Mitch left was because that stunt caused people to believe DLR would make a comeback in the band which wouldn't be good for Mitch at all.

I imagine VH was being pressured into a DLR reunion. Mitch might have helped VH into a similar direction as Sam Halen. It would have bombed just as much too. Ed wasn't in the right state mentally when he was working on the VH3 album.
What might have been...his voice is great and we would have slayed the Sammy stuff, but I think his era in VH would have suffered the same fate as Gary Cherone’s era. It’s a shame, this is a great tune.

This guy is an extraordinary singer. Very Sammy like. I can understand why they went with Cherone. It's a totally different thing. Many people says that Gary couldn't fit. The thing is, VH could fit with Gary and do something artistically different. That what artists do. Art.
Molloy was pretty much signed up to VH but suddenly the band appeared on mtv with Roth to do an award because mtv said they wanted Roth to appear . Molloy was gobsmacked with not being told and decided there and then it wasn’t the gig for him . The van halen brothers really cocked this one up and went on to flop with Cherone in a big way . For me though it all just adds to the intrigue of this incredible band .
