Mitch Malloy: Van Halen's Lost Boy

  • The legacy of Van Halen has never had a shortage of drama or die-hard fans...and rocker Mitch Malloy has a unique place within the still-unfolding drama. Following the ousting of Sammy Hagar from the band Malloy was tapped as the lead singer replacement, but subsequently declined this rock royalty position. For years Mitch Malloy's story was touched on but never fully revealed, mostly by Malloy to avoid conflict with his current musical pursuits. After the publication of "Everybody Wants Some: The Van Halen Saga," which mentions Malloy, fans and media continually asked about his Van Halen experience. This is Mitch's story. Mitch Malloy: Van Halen's Lost Boy.

      Yes, he has the happiness that I'm sure VH craves as they age out. I wish him well, as I also do for the rest of the VH society. They should actually use Mitch for a great example and try to repair the old demons that, soon, nobody will care about anyway.

      sha broussard You can have an opinion but it doesn’t mean it’s a good one. Just look at record sales. Ice cream man, Beautiful Girls, Atomic Punk. Hagar has never come close to touching any of those masterpieces. And how could he have more of a edgy rock voice if most of the hits were way softer rock. A lot of early Van Halen was almost metal it was so hard.

    • @nkw1985
      @nkw1985 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @sha broussard - I like some of Sammy's solo stuff but I never liked him in Van Halen. Van Halen to me is the Roth era (1978-1985). Dave is one of the best and most energetic frontmen of all time in my opinion and I just prefer his style. Sammy is technically probably the better vocalist but it's the way Roth would sing and move that made me like him more. I agree with you about the Van Halen brothers being cunts and Roth not being able to sing well anymore though.

    Well, it seems that this guy is far too level-headed and modest to ever be a successful candidate for such a disfunctional outfit. This guy seems like just pure class and, bless Van Halen, they are just not on that same level. If he had become an active member, we'd be watching a video of how they fucked him over with no notice and ruined his life. So he really dodged a bullet. I love Van Halen - their music, and their place in history - but unless you're Ed or Alex, nobody's gonna be safe in that band.

      ctlegacy.. you've "watched" Ed Van Halen around people huh? Wow! That's an accurate method of making an assessment of how someone may behave in the entirety of both their professional and personal life isn't it? I've personally interacted with Ed on different occasions and this is what I experienced during the particular time I was recording with Mitch Malloy upon his return from the VH adventure..
      ... I was with Mitch the following week when he returned to Nashville from L.A. and the Van Halen audition. We were starting to record some new tracks for Mitch's next record. I was privy to firsthand interaction between Mitch and Ed, and Ed was very cool. In fact he not only offered to help get us gear for the recording he actually followed thru and got the it done!! Ed didn't treat me as though I was lucky on the occasions I've spoken with him, he actually treated me like I was a friend. I'm sorry your "watching" him around people was a bad experience, we all make mistakes. However, my personal interaction with Ed was a wonderful experience, he is definitely kooky yes.. but he was very sweet and humble to me personally. The VH gig didn't work out for Mitch, but Mitch Malloy is extremely talented and doing quite well on his own :) Have a great day ctlegacy!

    Such interesting stuff that I never knew about until Eddie passed and of course you start going down the youtube rabbit-hole and find info that you never knew about. This sounds terrible to say but at the time I think this guy was almost too good for the Van Halen brothers, like Gary Cherone he's too good of a human being to survive the emotional terrorism that those guys put people, like Sammy Hagar, thru. I think Eddie really grew up the last 5-7 years of his life and it was awesome to see so what WOULD have been awesome would have been if this Malloy guy would have come in as their lead singer instead of Roth on that last go-round because Roth's voice was shot, sad to say.

    You're too nice, Mitch. You can say it -- Van Halen totally screwed you that day. That's nice of you trying to pin the whole thing on MTV, but the truth is if that were the case, Van Halen had the clout to tell MTV to shove it. But they used the MTV awards to test the water with Dave, knowing they had you in their back pocket if it failed. God bless ya, dude... but you're too nice about this.

      I don't know. I don't think we'll ever know the whole story. The brothers claim on that video interview on the right there...that they never told dave he was back in the band and that it was just the greatest hits thing. Now...that might be BS, or maybe not.
      But I have NO problem believing the brothers were being told by both MTV and Warner Bros. they'd better bring Roth in "or else" kind of thing. Not even VH has "the clout" to go against corporate giants like that. Sure they don't need to make anymore music.....but if they want to and they want it distributed you bet your ass they need to play ball with those companies.
      With all due respect to Mitch.....Warner Bros. was probably more pissed off with VH at the level of flop VH3 was and that was WITH a singer far more "established" than Mitch....in terms of being a "name". You can be damn sure if WB was told about Mitch they would have been freaking out big time. Don't forget....it's not the brothers who will front the money to make the record.
      Again....I'm not saying the brothers are blameless......probably far from it.....but don't underestimate the power of the labels and MTV to influence even big name artists.

    • @BudhagRizzo
      @BudhagRizzo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      doublestrokeroll Maybe... but I think that they would have stayed in touch with Mitch if that were the case, had the whole Dave thing gone sour (which it eventually did.) Doesn't seem like the VH camp even contacted Mitch after the fact.
      Look how they've treated Michael Anthony in the media lately! That guy has waved the VH banner from the very beginning and Eddie kinda bashed him in an interview recently, saying he had to show Michael his bass parts numerous times, and that his back up vocals weren't all that great. Basically Eddie was throwing Michael under the bus after they kicked him out for Eddie's boy. Eddie's even been complaining about Dave again.

    • @doublestrokeroll
      @doublestrokeroll 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well...if your EVH you probably know a whole lot of people...which probably means you spend as little time with all of them as you possibly can.
      I'm not saying your totally wrong.....Ed does come off as an ass a lot of the time....but there are always two sides and I'm not one to believe that it's always one side who are the "villain".
      Like personally I think there is too much Michael Anthony sympathy out there. People need to get over it. Sure they probably didn't treat him the best.....but nobody put a gun to his head and made him sign over his credits. And let's be real here.....Eddie may be going to far with his comments about MA...but MA got a ton of money on the first albums when he really didn't write a single thing. They all split credits back then out of traditional "band comradery" but the reality was Ed wrote basically everything aside from lyrics.
      And Ed and Alex wanted their kin in the band. Sorry but I don't have a huge problem with that. It is their band.
      For me I just care about the songs. Are they good or aren't they. And personally I thought a different kind of truth was a great record.
      I'm not star struck by people like this and I don't really give a shit about their personal lives other than a giggle or two. I don't know them and never will and I only see what they want to show. So it's really not that important to me what they do to each other.

Being a big Sammy Hagar and Van Halen fan (yes, Diamond Dave leaving bothered me), I was thrilled Sammy joined.. and the music speaks for itself.. I've seen at least 15 stadium concerts.. two I went to see again.. Van Halen with Sammy Hagar and Judas Priest.. really beyond compare to any other concerts.. WOW, a hidden party of VH's history. Guy seems really nice as well.
    The bummer is, he should have taken the gig even if for only a few years as it would have boosted HIS solo career to high heights. BUT he is happy with his decision and that is all that really counts in the long run. Although it seemed as though he declined due to possible hurt feelings.
    A similar situation happened with a friend of mine long passed away, Brec auditioned for KISS when they were first looking for a replacement for Ace Frehley. Brec was a shredder before the term was used. He auditioned twice. He was offered the gig, did a few rehearsals with them then declined. We about blew our gaskets as...what the F...I mean one of the biggest bands in the world. He could have made great money, great exposure and maybe even given our band a leg up..he was our guitar player.
    When we got the news he had declined we got him home and he said it was simple. He said Gene and Paul were total assholes to work with AND he had found out he was going to be a salaried guitar player with absolutely NO input nor share of concert sales of any merch that had his face on it since he would be in new makeup.. He said after a couple of rehearsals where he wanted to change a few things in his solo time and was actually yelled at by Paul, that did it for him. As well he threw in you would not believe how bad their skin was from the all the makeup they used (Long before they went public with just their own faces) Anyway he had to sign a NDA about the new material they had started showing him and not to even play a lick of it before any of it was released or talk about lyrics notes nada.
    To this day I kind of wish Brec had stayed, if nothing else so he would have made some great money been named on their albums, tour, news papers, rock magazines, done at least one world tour, and all that and I could say, Hey Brec is one of my best friends and he is the lead guitar for KISS. And I guess i can actually say it if even though he was their lead guitar for less than a few weeks.
    So I can sort of see how sometimes you have to walk away from the Gold Ring when so many thousands of bands would give anything to even play a tour.

      The song sucks. It's the same bland Eddie that surfaced around F.U.C.K. and stayed through VHIII. Nothing inspired at all, and Mitch's vocals don't help. He's a good singer, but the lyrics and vocals aren't inspired in this song at all. He sounds like a cross between Hagar and Cherone.

    This guy did the right thing not getting involved with VH, took a lot of balls to turn it down, for this guy to be asked to replace Sammy then to see his future band on stage with DLR shitty move Eddie

    • @Nottalottasleep
      @Nottalottasleep 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not being critical of anything you or others have said and God knows what a circus the "I-said", "No you said" drama that seemed to over take the actual performance of music with VH. But as to the Dave Lee Roth appearance with the "3/4's of" a band that Miller introduces: I have to sympathize with Eddie having been put in such a position. Consider: At that point, the support of VH1, and/or the Television network carried a lot more weight, meant a lot more than today. Eddie was told that VH1 and the Award's show wanted David Lee Roth on stage-
      period. The Producer's and the Network called that shot. Eddie decided that Roth being there really didn't mean anything, nobody was telling him DLR had to be in the band. And DLR could say what ever he liked - he wasn't going out with them again. So Eddie made a business decision - everybody else can fantasize about what they would have done, carrying the weight thrust upon Ed by network hotshots. But had it been me - if I'd been Eddie I could very easily have done the same thing - though I would have been on the phone ASAP to Malloy telling him to stay cool. However, had I been Malloy, I would have done just what he did and dodged the train wreck.

    Wow you really gotta feel for this guy, seeing Dave at the MTV awards just sinks his feelings of acceptance. Maybe he WAS too nice, and didn't assert his position as well as he could have. I'm with Maverikk68 below, it's just not VH without a pompous self centered dick in front, even if he's paid 7 figures to down a fifth of Jack and call in a lyric forgetting performance in front of hundreds of thousands. (US '83, I was there)
    All that aside his sound is way too popish for me, the outro is... well I just said it.

    • @cathridge
      @cathridge 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually think he dodged a bullet. Doesnt matter who the vocalist of VH is. They have to deal with Alex & Eddie and their monopoly of the band and everyone in it. Asserting his position wouldn't have helped him in this case. DLR will always be the penultimate singer for VH and they'll always have to compare every singer to him. The record labels and industry even realize this and Im sure part of the reason he's back in the band is less about the brothers VH wanting him back in and more about how the industry and the fans view him as the ultimate frontman, which I have to agree.

    • @fuckgoogle4704
      @fuckgoogle4704 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** I guess only Dave knows what was in that bottle, but one thing we can confirm as fact is their performance at the US festival was pretty bad- doing a splendid impression of a drunk band. It's not just Dave forgetting many of the lyrics he even bothered to sing,note how they played many of the songs way too fast. If you look at some of the background on this event it's obvious Wozniak let stupid personal wants overshadow his normal business sense- particularly his late decision to lure David Bowie to the festival with an astronomical paycheck. (made necessary not by greed on Bowie's part but to duplicate the equipment Bowie was already using in Europe) thus jacking up Van Halen's price due to their top billing rider. I believe despite the huge turnout Wozniak did lose money on the festival though the reason there was never a third was probably the deaths of fans more than anything else. I can't recall if it was 3 or 4? Found in parking lots in their sleeping bags, flat as pancakes. Gruesome.
      FWIW I thought the first US festival was much better as it never really placed excess as its own goal.

    • @IRNHYD
      @IRNHYD 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      FuckGoogle+ I was at US Festival 83' for two of the three days. Van Halen's performance was very much anticipated and when they took to the stage, it was immediately apparent there was something wrong with them. It was more like a drunken jam session than a concert set. A drunken jam session between musicians who very obviously didn't like one another anymore. Dave kept staggering about, slurring his words. Regardless, Van Halen put on the worst show of the day, hands down. The band clearly wasn't having fun anymore.
      There were only two deaths involving sleeping bags. Both of them died from drug overdoses....not being trampled. One of them was yards away from a remote Sherriff's sub-station in the crowded parking lot. Drugs were plentiful and flowing freely all day long in Devore on both days that I went.

      Perry Hvegholm Yeah I know some of them were mine! I also tried getting in the gate with a six pack not so well hidden.... one in each sock, pocket, down my pants... they were cool and let me in but told me "put the beer in one of those cans" and there must have been thousands of bottles and cans of you name it in the pile.
      The burning of the plastic containers really sucked, what the fuck was wrong with people?

    • @fuckgoogle4704
      @fuckgoogle4704 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perry Hvegholm Oh yeah if you were in the area perhaps you remember a much better concert a year or two earlier at Anaheim Stadium, "Summer Strut '82" With Loverboy, a red smokin hot Scorpions, and Foreigner and I think one more band. Scorpions were at the beginning of their Blackout tour and had so much raw energy, Loverboy was very good in those days. One of the best live shows I saw in the '80's and that was well over 100.
      Saw VH at SD sports arena on their 1984 tour, after the US, and while much more sober it was a real yawner. Have seen worse, it was just so much like useless masterbation. Even though Michael Anthony is respected he did a bass solo that stands as one of the 3 most repulsive artist solos I've ever seen. (a Tommy Lee drum solo is one of the others)

  • @69Mucci

    It sounds to me, from the timeline, that Sammy was leaving around the same time they recorded the 2 new songs with Dave (for the Best of collection), and they were hanging out with Dave. But it sounds like they weren't necessarily planning on a full reunion with him. Then Malloy comes into the picture, but Dave was still in the picture, which is when they went on MTV. I don't know if Dave was under the impression that he was back in the band, or it was just wishful thinking, but it sounds like he didn't know anything was going on with Malloy. And then it sounds like Malloy left, Dave was out of the picture, and Cherone immediately came in. It sounds like there was a lot of drama and turmoil in a very short amount of time.

      Dick is all grown up, he'll be fine. However, Jim might be interested in adopting a nice Kenyan kid named Barry. He continues wars, divides the races, lies to his supporters, and likes to "redistribute" working people's money to the lazy. But he does get to buy votes with "free" phones, food, housing and healthcare that isn't actually free. Good thing he saved the day by giving us higher unemployment, higher gas prices, strangling regulations on small businesses, lower graduation and literacy rates, higher taxes, lower national credit rating, a near depression, and..........................................
