    Interesting video. I was 20 years old when I engineered/designed/drafted this vehicle with the other 5 of us. After the designing of this charger I was transferred to the production line with my supervisor to instruct the production guys how to build. I am now 77 and it still brings back many memories. We went through the testing around Adelaide etc before started racing. Many good memories. Good one guys.

      I owned 4 in my youth, after seeing the Chrysler Performance Driving Team arrive in Armidale, NSW, to do a display at the showground. Four white brand new E37 Chargers, with Champion, Dunlop, Castrol stickers, racing stripes, the whole deal. As a 7 yr old boy in 1972, they were the most awesome thing I had ever seen, and I have been hooked on them ever since.

    Actually, I'm a big fan of Chrysler Australia vehicles. I firmly believe Chrysler and it proud new parent company Stellantis should absolutely support the Australian and the entire region including New Zealand markets. The market seems quite loyal and strong. Kind of an Australian alter ego American love of vehicle especially performance cars and Chrysler products. I've always been interested with the Australian MoPars. lol, just can't get used to the right hand drivers position. Thanks for all E49 Charger picks they're beautiful. I had a 72 valiant Duster 340 and a 74 Charger SE 440 V8 Carter Thermoquad 4bbl carb.

    I'm in Toronto Canada, just subscribed, and seeing for the first time ever the unique classic and performance cars of Australia. Well, unique to our eyes. And have to say I like this. Recently I noticed posts of '60's Pontiacs, right hand drive, with factory Chevrolet engines, chassis, etc., that were made here in Canada - just miles from here - and exported over there. They were the "Canadian Pontiacs" with Chevy engines and parts that were initially made for Canadian market only - Americans couldn't get them - but then were exported abroad. Needless to say it blew my mind seeing them featured in Australia on TH-cam. Thanks Aussies, you have a big fan here in Canada of your muscle cars and classics and just love watching each new video. Cheers!

    Great interview - thanks for all the information. One thing that was not discussed was the bonnet air scoop. Up until today I did not think the E49 had a scoop but googling pics I found a few with them - so on a new car was it an option or is it a aftermarket thing at the time that some cars had put on.
    As I said great interview.

    • @7s29
      @7s29 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was a dealer option. The one on this car looks after market. The factory made scoops had a wrinkle finish.

      The scoop was always non-functional and in my opinion looks better on the car when the bonnet blackout patches are also in place, which in Phil's case, they were not.

    To believe you in recovery and restoration, may I ask you where did you get those body decals from? I have Valiants too and can't even find a neddle in the haystack. 😕
    If you notice here that this Charger has the bonnet scoop on the side instead of the centre. That was my idea in '69 after I put a scoop at one side of my show car Valiant. I always had a feeling the Chrysler executives had visited the motor shows to pick on ideas. Why is that? Let me tell you something. Every car enthusiasts scoffed at the idea and often asked why the scoop is at the side of the bonnet, even ridiculed about it during the 4 years that I took this magnificent vehicle to motor shows. Here is the story. The Valiant had a total facelift and was named Torquebird. Because dad and I were mechanics (I was barely 17 when dad and I rebuilt this car for show propose to promote our mechanic/engineering business in Port Melbourne in the 60s). The car first had a hotter up 225 slant six. 2 year later in 1970 the slant six was replaced with the new Hemi Pacer 245 inline six and two barrel carby. A couple of months later we made a manifold that used 2×2 barrel carries, since the engine already had a high end cam. But there was a small problem with the air filters being high and touching under the bonnet. So, the decision to cut a hole to make way to the air filters was the least we could do, but looked stupid. So, I went to Carac Dandenong, a speed shop of my days and bought a scoop and we installed it. However, it looked a bit stupid being at the side instead of the centre, but we had no choice. Besides, if it didn't appeal us we could easily find other alternatives. It was a fixed scoop, unlike that of the new Falcon GT which had a scoop in the centre and shaking because it was attached on the 351 v8 engine. At this stage in early 1970, the Valiant was driven to the Exhibition building Custom and Hotrod Show. Despite the modified appearance, it drew a crowd. But in 1971 after the arrival of the Hemi 265 6 Pak engine, dad couldn't resist to install it in the show Valiant. This we did, hotted up the new engine together with the triple Webber carbies and extractors, and then selected a body colour to go with it. We chose Ford's Calypso green. We completed it just as the Charger E38 mafe appeared from the production line and, emember "Hey Charger!" call? But, funnily enough it had a scoop installed on the left side of the bonnet. It seemed a bit of copycats job in doing that, despite the objections and scoffs from other car buffs. However, nobody saw this green menace until the next Custom/Hot rod Show, which won us a trophy for the best presented customised Valiant. Sadly, that beauty was sold in the 80s because a semi trailer drove right on top of its bonnet while trying to turn right in a a busy and overcrowded street where the Moorabbin drive-in picture theatre used to be, and repairing it to show condition was never the same.
    Today, I have another Valiant, the last Of our pride and joy, the AP6 4PV v8, the few of these that were special vehicle with a black vinyl roof and white body. A rare car in my opinion. It is still with me in the garage and drives like new. Chrysler did make quality vehicles in the 60.

      This was the racing variant. 265 cu in w/triple webbers and 4 speed box. Initial racing box was standard 3 speed as rules dictated there be no mods carried out as it was Australian Touring Car Regulations. The Charger was also sold with the 318 V8 but was found to be too nose heavy for racing so they went with the six and put a large fuel tank in it , which meant they also had to sell the road car version with this as well.

      Not all Chargers [or Vals in general] have that. I have seen really good cars with and total pigs without. You just have to check the rain guage [the glovebox] to see how rusty it is around the screen.

      @@ldnwholesale8552 I drove the most rusty LeBaron known to man . $100. The car started imploding on the drive home. Because of the chassis rail cancer the steerbox became loose!!! As I got to my street the car started crabbing severely to the left. A leaf hanger separated. I had 3 attempts at getting it thru my front gate till my neighbor, in hysterics said, try reversing it in. The good bits from the LeB + bits from CM SE, GLX, 318 & LSD from cop car, all went onto my CL. What a car!!!. I had badges made up that read: " Le' Sex "
      Oh the 80s & 90s, cheap free Vals for everybody...
