@@kratosthegodofwar2593 Not even for hunting purposes? A Kar98 isn't different from most hunting rifles. You should be able to get a hunting license and then justify owning it that way. It's not uncommon to run into a hunter here in Denmark that has an old Carl Gustav rifle (military surplus) fitted with a moden sight.

So, he told that at the final test almost everybody from their group could hit gun machine target at thousand metres with Mosin-Nagan. But, he was only one who survived from that group.
The man who started the British sniper programme in WW1 was a big game hunter called Major H Hesketh-Pritchard DSO.MC. His book, "Sniping in France' is still required reading for British snipers today and for snipers in many other countries. It is a truly fascinating read which provides in depth insights into the psychology behind the highly efficient German sniping programme of the time and how his training, based on his experience of stalking and killing dangerous African big game, combined with highly imaginative innovations such as precision built highly realistic dummies (which could actually smoke real cigarettes to add to realism) through which the exact direction of a enemy's snipers shot could be calculated, successfully outwitted the highly trained German snipers.
The German K98 is also my go to rifle for long range shooting. The only difference of my setup is that I am using a newer style scope with a mount system that does not need special drilling into the rifle and indeed using existing mounting locations so I dont take away the value from the rifle. I bought mine back when I was 18 and I am now 35. The last time i was shooting at 100 yards and hitting near bulls eye I didnt notice a large crowd swarming around me at the range and put a huge smile on my face.
My dad had a disfunct Kar98 at home, I probably spent 10min operating the bolt-action because every single move seemingly increases your testosteron by 10%. Long story short, I punched a hole in the wall and cut down the old walnut tree by hand. 10/10, would do again.
Without bringing the huge advantage of modern powders, casings & bullets into play, that's some impressive shooting. Typical shots for snipers during the war were 2-300 yds.
Am I the only one who thinks this is maybe the most beautiful sniper there is. It's nostalgic, it's beautiful, it's accurate, well aproved and goes as a good hunting rifle.
And some of its specialty rounds can go through modern day steel plate armor like its play dough, yes for many reasons this is the most beautiful rifle
Spotter should have ate Crow.. Henry would have walked in his second or third shot. If he would have been told actually where shots were landing. That is some super impressive shooting . It's much harder than he makes it look.That rifle and scope were awesome.
Something I've learned from this channels: for shooters, run of the mill shooters at least, it's practically a guarantee that you are less accurate than the rifle you're shooting.
I have learnt shooting when i was 13 years old with Mauser K98, it have over 4000 Joule. You must hold it strong in your shoulder. After 50 rounds i was kaputt for this day.

Also, side note: on the Eastern Front, some German snipers (some sources say all) where also issued with the exploding bullet often used in aircraft or tanks to ... assist in the kill on a high value target, the Russian snipers apparently did the same, Ian and Karl have a good video about the effects of those bullets.
@@braden1986 the aircraft ammo that they grabbed for use was primarily because it was much higher quality and more consistent because it was for aircraft use. The fact you could get incendiary effects too was a bonus!
The Mauser 98K is likely one of the best designed and accurate rifles used by an army. It is a remarkable rifle and a collector's delight. Nicely done.

I have a 98K with the Zf-39 scope with the high turret mounts and have hit an 28 inch gong at 800 meters consistently with Yugoslavian military ball ammo from the 70's.

Awesome video guys! My buddy has a war trophy sniper rifle his father brought back but it's not a K98. The stock was shot through and had blood on it when he got it. No iron sights on it and the original scope is lost but now has a low end optic of some sort. The trigger job on that rifle is spectacular. I have zero doubt that rifle took a lot of lives. Holy. Crap! That was awesome! When we last discussed this Henry it amazed me when you told me the Germans didn't use windage on the particular scope, just mainly elevation. Plus with the whole Kar98k being very nice in it's condition too. That really is something, man. It always made me curious how the US would have employed snipers had they gotten over the whole "honorable rules" during WWII. Though, I think the M1 Garand being the main focus as standard issue was also partly why the US didn't have many sniper rifles made at that time. I believe the War Department didn't want to cause delays on manufacturing incoming Garands. Really would like to test that out with a 1903A4 with the Weaver 330C and "scant" stock. 1903's in general always sparked my curiosity, especially the different manufacturers like Remington and Smith-Corona 1903s. Awesome work Henry and Josh! Loved the 450 yard audio sneak in too. ;) And congrats on your chicken dinner. hehe

Amazing work with the Mauser. I've always loved that rifle. It's look and history and effectiveness give it a timeless appeal. However..if you managed to pack away that entire chicken then you are truly a Legend🤟
I love the Karabiner 98k, it has a beautiful telescopic sight and it one of my favorite blot action sniper rifles. Although, nothing beats American Rifles.

just something I want to add: yes the german snipers got "special ammo" but it was basically "can you get me Anschuss Patronen?" to the armourer/ammo supply person. The ammo you point out was absolutely prefered and sought after from snipers, but official it´s use was as the name says for "Anschuss" basicly a match load for the armourers to check rifles. It´s planed for checking the zero or rezeroing of rifle sights, but it was "semi-official" approved to hand this ammo out to snipers and basicaly the snipers tended to go well with ther unit armourers so they kept some of those bullets aside for them. A German word calles Organisationstalent has 2 meainings, literally being talented in doing things in a clear (organized) way, but because organizing also ment "getting something somehow" Organisationstalent could also mean that this person was very skilled in "liberating, trading, finding, collecting and repurpussing things" in exactly this way most snipers went for al kinds of usefull gear wich they needed to do ther tasks, specialieced equipment was fielded very late in the war. Great shooting I have great respect for the 7.92 round ! Love my K98K and G98-40;s! Especially cause my Dad brought those home from the War! One he actually used to save his bacon in Italy after his Garrand was disabled by a taking a round to it! It still has the blood stain from the poor German that held it prior to my dad getting it! He actually kept the ammo pouches he took off the German and some of the ammo. Had to reload the bullets into new brass cases as they were corroded steel cased ammo.
no wonder it took the germans so long to adopt the G43 and MP44. Leadership just couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that a smaller round on a semi automatic was needed to fight urban warfare when they already had a riflel that could nail someone at 1000+ yds .

I got a Kar98k for Christmas, it's marked SWP 45 and all numbers match. Examples with that code are rare and desirable with few unmodified examples in the U.S., and it's in phenomenal shape with no obvious tool marks or rough finishing you often find on late war models. The guy who helped me sign the paperwork for it thought it was a Yugo Mauser and actually marked the price down. I should've bought lottery tickets with the luck I had that day!
If one is comparing rifles for accuracy, it is important to load your own ammunition for each rifle and calibre because extreme accuracy beyond that of mass production tolerances is required. While almost all ammo is "Good Enough" at normal battle ranges, for extreme shooting it is not of sufficient consistency to ensure repeatable results. That means no batch changes in the powder, and all projectiles weighed (I spin them as well, but few fail in this regard), as well as having exactly the same powder load within one thousandth of a gram or better. Most military ammunition is multi-purpose, loaded to operate a machine gun, either gas operated or recoil operated, as well as be used in a rifle, which means when used in a rifle you also have excess muzzle blast and a flash that gives away your position. Death for a sniper, because it might well mean a 100mm cannister round with your name on it unless you can shoot then scoot. Also, it often also means this clip ammo is not the best load or the optimum powder for extreme range accuracy. One needs a slightly slower powder burn, and an EXACT amount of gas produced to maximise bullet acceleration down the barrel with as little muzzle blast as possible, and to that end, proper crowning of the barrel end as well as using blast reducers and rearward deflectors (as well as reducing recoil, but loud for the shooter) are often employed.
Thank you for the great test and honest opinion. It's next to impossible to hear something good about any historic German technology here in Germany these days - so kudos to you. BTW: A female shooter over here tried the K98 while standing and almost got pushed over be its kick... :D

Using any low powered optic hitting that range is nuts. I would only do that with an MG.

Holy. Crap! That was awesome! When we last discussed this Henry it amazed me when you told me the Germans didn't use windage on the particular scope, just mainly elevation. Plus with the whole Kar98k being very nice in it's condition too. That really is something, man.
It always made me curious how the US would have employed snipers had they gotten over the whole "honorable rules" during WWII. Though, I think the M1 Garand being the main focus as standard issue was also partly why the US didn't have many sniper rifles made at that time. I believe the War Department didn't want to cause delays on manufacturing incoming Garands. Really would like to test that out with a 1903A4 with the Weaver 330C and "scant" stock. 1903's in general always sparked my curiosity, especially the different manufacturers like Remington and Smith-Corona 1903s.

Amazing work with the Mauser. I've always loved that rifle. It's look and history and effectiveness give it a timeless appeal. However..if you managed to pack away that entire chicken then you are truly a Legend🤟

I love the Karabiner 98k, it has a beautiful telescopic sight and it one of my favorite blot action sniper rifles. Although, nothing beats American Rifles.

just something I want to add:
yes the german snipers got "special ammo" but it was basically "can you get me Anschuss Patronen?" to the armourer/ammo supply person.
The ammo you point out was absolutely prefered and sought after from snipers, but official it´s use was as the name says for "Anschuss" basicly a match load for the armourers to check rifles.
It´s planed for checking the zero or rezeroing of rifle sights, but it was "semi-official" approved to hand this ammo out to snipers and basicaly the snipers tended to go well with ther unit armourers so they kept some of those bullets aside for them.
A German word calles Organisationstalent has 2 meainings, literally being talented in doing things in a clear (organized) way, but because organizing also ment "getting something somehow"
Organisationstalent could also mean that this person was very skilled in "liberating, trading, finding, collecting and repurpussing things"
in exactly this way most snipers went for al kinds of usefull gear wich they needed to do ther tasks, specialieced equipment was fielded very late in the war.

WW1 and WW2 Era Bolt actions are my favorite. I am amazed at the quality and ability of these rifles. I have a Lend Lease M1917 that is crazy accurate with ball ammo.

Great shooting I have great respect for the 7.92 round ! Love my K98K and G98-40;s! Especially cause my Dad brought those home from the War! One he actually used to save his bacon in Italy after his Garrand was disabled by a taking a round to it! It still has the blood stain from the poor German that held it prior to my dad getting it! He actually kept the ammo pouches he took off the German and some of the ammo. Had to reload the bullets into new brass cases as they were corroded steel cased ammo.
Guns and a Whataburger cup in the background...... doesn't get more Texas than that!

no wonder it took the germans so long to adopt the G43 and MP44. Leadership just couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that a smaller round on a semi automatic was needed to fight urban warfare when they already had a riflel that could nail someone at 1000+ yds .

I got a Kar98k for Christmas, it's marked SWP 45 and all numbers match. Examples with that code are rare and desirable with few unmodified examples in the U.S., and it's in phenomenal shape with no obvious tool marks or rough finishing you often find on late war models. The guy who helped me sign the paperwork for it thought it was a Yugo Mauser and actually marked the price down. I should've bought lottery tickets with the luck I had that day!
If one is comparing rifles for accuracy, it is important to load your own ammunition for each rifle and calibre because extreme accuracy beyond that of mass production tolerances is required. While almost all ammo is "Good Enough" at normal battle ranges, for extreme shooting it is not of sufficient consistency to ensure repeatable results. That means no batch changes in the powder, and all projectiles weighed (I spin them as well, but few fail in this regard), as well as having exactly the same powder load within one thousandth of a gram or better.
Most military ammunition is multi-purpose, loaded to operate a machine gun, either gas operated or recoil operated, as well as be used in a rifle, which means when used in a rifle you also have excess muzzle blast and a flash that gives away your position. Death for a sniper, because it might well mean a 100mm cannister round with your name on it unless you can shoot then scoot.
Also, it often also means this clip ammo is not the best load or the optimum powder for extreme range accuracy. One needs a slightly slower powder burn, and an EXACT amount of gas produced to maximise bullet acceleration down the barrel with as little muzzle blast as possible, and to that end, proper crowning of the barrel end as well as using blast reducers and rearward deflectors (as well as reducing recoil, but loud for the shooter) are often employed.
