When I'm spraying parts with threaded holes I plug the holes with ear plugs. They seal up the threads great.
That's a fantastic idea!!!
While sanding etc get yourself a 20" box fan then fabricat a holder for a 20x20 furnace filter on the back. You can even duct tape it on. Run the fan near your work area blowing away and it will filter and capture a lot of the flying particles and it's dirt cheap
Great video ! - Fun tip - you can dilute it 10-40 percent with acetone for a different "smaller" texture and thinner coats for covering parts where you might not need a super chunky thick coating. I usually go 20 percent acetone ( does not change hardener mix ratio ) for things like metal fender liners / skid plates etc . . . 30-40 percent acetone works for a really thin coat for driveshafts / axle housing etc . . . when first sprayed it will not look very textured but just wait ! it will "pull" as it sets and wrinkle/bump up. This grip of this brand is . . .tenacious ... when applied diluted so long as the surface is scuffed and clean and shown in the video. The grips is so good that if you have to redo a part - you will likely need a propane torch to remove it for a redo. 😜
Also - if you thin it - add a little time for additional coats and handling -

@@bobscat-wj4ub Yeah - I can't imagine many pro shops would use this stuff to actually line a bed - at least I would think not. It's been my experience that it's great for covering everything that is lower impact and it's easy to repair. You can put it on thin for something like a fender liner and it won't add tons of weight to any panels. If I need something like a pickup bed done - I'll get it done commercially. I've used raptor liner on step rails / as an undercoating / on axle housing etc . . . and also to refresh a repaired utility trailer that needed a repaint. It's worked great for all of that. I literally thought the exact same thing when I saw the title of this video though . . .😆
I sprayed bed liners professionally for a handful of years and this was in 2003-2007 and it was a two part crazy overly complicated system. So happy to see how far things have come. But yeah on the old machine you would turn the fluid feed down and air up and mist it to the customers texture liking holding it closer or farther away. We were also spraying a guarantee of 1/4” liner all the way around unless specified otherwise. I hated doing over the rail trucks because it was tacky looking. Had to use string tape and be on your game before it all set up to make sure to cut those fine lines. If you had a dual feed style gun which there are plenty of that will spray raptor specifically you can make it gloss and flat, chunky and fat or look like nice and fine grip tape from a skateboard. The gun they supply is legit and works great with beautiful results. Sold on the raptor liner all day though for the price and color mix ability as well.

Great tip with the drop coat; I kinda used to use the same technique for air brushing or rattle canning fine scale military models when I was younger and never thought of applying it to anything else

@@SoWellGarage This tip was huge for me as well, I've been binge watching videos like this so I don't screw up my vehicle when I do this to it, and I see a lot of video's that get the tiger stripes, or you can just see that the coat is not even and was worried about this. I have a hummer and will be doing a 2 tone, black accessories with a desert tan. I was debating tearing things down like you did here but...if I'm going to do it, may as well do it right the first time. What compressor are you using; or suggest using?
@@willdrivesu7914 I'm using a 26 gallon craftsman. It's old and charges back up a few times while spraying a whole vehicle but it works damn good! I'd say try around that size but also get an air/water separator! Makes sure none of the moisture in the tank makes it into your liner

Another tip is clean your gun between coats so you don’t get random clumps and the texture stays consistent .

In all painting the better the prep work the better your end results. After your initial base coat (drop coat) the 10-15 min wait is off gassing, and doing so will help your second coat adhere properly to your base coat and create stronger bond. And if you do this all coats your finished product will end up very durable, all of this is even more important with a rattle can paint job.

Prep work is key to the quality of any job
If I were to spray my side steps (running boards/rock sliders) what would I need supplies wise. I have a compressor to use.
It’s a one off job for now, maybe my quad racks at a later date. I’m just a bit overwhelmed by the options on offer.
What pressure do you personally spray raptor at…..I’m after doing my van but I’m looking for a smoother finish.

Did my running boards with their rattle cans. My cousin didn't believe i did it myself. Only the beginning part got me a little nervous, i didn't really wanna sand my new side steps lol
That's so awesome man! And yeah, it's always scary sanding something brand new 🤣 I had a guy bring me like a two or three year old 4 runner and he wanted the whole thing done. Definitely hard to put sand paper to that one 🤣
Rattle can liners is crap. Raptor Liner is 2 part urethane and will last the life of the truck.
It seems that monstaliner produces better finished product vs raptor liner . It doesn't take any real work to get it even looking . If you want it to look shiny shoot it with 2k urethane clear while it's still inside the chemical adhesion window ...you can shoot it after but it would need scuffed for adhesion . I'm doing my xj in predator green and pyroclastic on the axles and under body may do the exo cage in pyro as well . I will be using 2k clear on it to shine it up some .
How does this product hold up on metal that will see a good deal of foot traffic? Applying to the flat surface of a step-up on my truck. Thanks!
how far did 1 bottle of the liner go? was 1 bottle enough to get the job done or did you need more then one?
nice work man, that dust coat makes a big difference. Is there alot of fumes on this raptor liner when spraying? Im about to do my rockers in garage which roughly looks same size as your garage. But its winter here at cannot leave door open. Have a mask aswell but if its too much maybe i need to wait till spring to spray my truck rockers. Thanks

Thank you! And yes! You just want to go heavier on the sanding. Chrome is a pain to stick to so make sure to it has a good scratch to it and then use adhesion promoter!

How do you do a drop coat when painting a vehicle with raptor?
Badass man, 2 quick questions, what do you use to clean the parts after sanding, what do you use to clean your gun?
Great questions, I use mineral spirits to clean after prep, for the gun I remove the bottle from the gun, let it dry, then peel it off. Out of everything I've found that the easiest. I use a seal pick to clean the inside of the Sprayer barrel
I'm about to do my 5x10 trailer deck, for my wash rig in blue metallic raptor liner. I was quoted to have the rest of the trailer, (which is completely torn down and I'm actually adding 2.5 feet to it in the front for a burner unit ) almost $2,000 to have it rhino-lined, professionally. Now I'm thinking about just doing it all myself, with the raptor liner. I just absolutely HATE prep work, and there's a lot of it, due to pre-existing rust and areas of thick layers of paint. Just curious to see how, it will hold up on wood. It's completely dry and I plan on sanding it, priming it, sanding it again, using the adhesion promoter and then spraying the blue metallic raptor liner.

Great question and I'm so sorry that I didn't get to your question sooner. I actually have! And I surprisingly did great! We sealed it with a wood primer and then did the coating. It was for a DIY truck box and it lasted at least a year without issues. The guy I did it for came back for something else and the box still looked great

I would suggest some pvc pipe and painters plastic…build you a cheap spray booth to contain the overspray! Nothing like the “hell hath no fury like” an angry wife seeing the mess after a year of painting parts in the garage. They don’t tell you about the excellent concrete adhesion as well 🤣
Forget the wife's response.....they complain about EVERYTHING all the time. Best to just protect the garage walls and floor.

Sorry for getting back to you so late! So I don't suggest a drop cost after each coat. Just one drop coat at the end as a final coat

Great question! I've become friends with many of my customers and I've had no complaints. Seen plenty of my projects now 2-3 years later and it looks just as good as when I sprayed it

What is your thoughts on clear coat? I’m getting ready to raptor liner my jeep flat fenders and rock sliders.
I’m thinking the clear will add protection and keep its gloss.
I think it's honestly a great idea, I've had a few customers ask for that but the cost has always scared them away from it(since I will only use legit expensive clear coat). So I've yet to do it BUT I think it would definitely be worth a shot! Maybe try a small piece of wood or metal and see how you like it!
@@SoWellGarage automotive clear would sound like a waste $$ wise. Why not use rattle can eastwood 2k spray cans?? $20-30 per can with built in hardener, ive seen people paint entire cars with this stuff.

Two bottles will be more than enough for a set of steps
You should wait at least 1 hour before handling and it takes at least 7 days to fully cure. But, other than that, he does a great how to.

Not after every coat but if you end up spraying a lot after about an hour and half you start getting solid chunks in the spray. I had probably 5-6 spray guns so I'd swap out every few bottle
I have a question, if you finish your first coat and wait 45 minutes to gas off and say you have half a bottle left does that bottle start hardening also or do you need to mix a new bottle
@@jamesdodson9417 it definitely can, you'll notice after about an hour to an hour and a half you'll get big "blobs" coming out with your normal texture. I had multiple guns so it wasn't a problem for me. I'd swap to a clean gun but for the normal person that's not the norm

Thank you for the video. I have 2 questions, how much product would I need to do the total exterior of my 1995 extended cab Mazda B4000 (It is really just a Ford Ranger) Can I spray liner on a polished aluminum tailgate cap that holds my plastic liner onto my tailgate? Thank you for your time.
Great question! For the truck I'd assume about 6-8 bottles would be perfect (1.5-2 gallons), as for the aluminum you'd want to hit that really hard with sand paper, 120 grit and sand till it's evenly matte. For sure use adhesion promoter!

@@gilcruz7869 so I would wait about 10-15 minutes but if you're doing your entire vehicle, by the time you get to the next panel the other is basically ready for another coat.
I wish you had said more about which grit you used to sand.
So generally for truck beds I'll use a Scotch Brite pad attachment on a sander/angle grinder to be able to get into hard to reach areas. After that I'll use 120-220 for the rest of the truck bed. On the steps I used 220 all the way through sense there wasn't any hard to reach places. Since the bed liner is thick you don't need to go any higher than 220. I hope this helps!

The kits are sold by the gallon (4 bottles) for a full set of side steps I'd say half a gallon(2 bottles)

I would! An area that's gonna get constantly hit with wind, bugs, debris, etc. I would coat it fully with adhesion promoter
Have you ever used raptor liner on the back of the fold down seat on the plastic portion I would like to try that to prevent the dogs from slipping around on it any idea if that might work
Great question! I haven't but it's basically the same process and I'd add adhesion promoter. Should give you the results you're looking for!
I'm thinking about doing my step bars on my Colorado, can the plastic step pads be done as well on those? And if so is there any special process for doing them?
So you definitely can, I would use a scotch bright pad to hit the plastic and then use adhesion promoter on it. If you use sand paper use like 220 so you're not gouging the plastic
So when spraying a complete vehicle, if putting on two coats, you would put on the first followed by a drop coat, then the second coat followed by a drop coat? Thank you.
Great question! No need for a drop coat on the first one, the drop coat is so that the texture look the same through out the whole truck. So once all the coats are complete, then do your drop coat. What did you use in the rattle can before the raptor liner?
Adhesion promoter, I generally use it on plastics or areas I know will get a lot of abuse
have you ever sprayed a 2k clear coat over it to give more shine and uv protection?
I haven't but I did research it and people say it works and helps keep it from fading over time. I think it's absolutely worth a shot if you want to spend the time and money!

Im SO sorry I missed your comment! either way is totally fine! what I generally do is if it's bare metal, I use a primer then adhesion promoter, if it's not bare metal, just promoter!
So, if you were doing a whole truck....would you do the drop coat before the second/third coat? After the second/third coat? like at the very end. Or after each coat?
Great question, I've done it a few different ways. What seems to work best is when you finish your 2nd or 3rd coat on a panel do a drop coat, move to the next closest panel and do a drop coat while blending your drop coat into the panel you just did a drop coat on. Once you've done this for the whole vehicle, do one full drop coat on the whole vehicle. This is what's worked the best for me
Wow, this was a great video. Does the drop coat method work with spray cans of Herculiner as well? I like the finer texture of Herculiner spray cans and just have a few small projects
I can't for sure say but maybe try it on a small piece of ply wood and see! I'd love to know what you find out!
You could also try a higher psi on the raptor liner gun to get a finer texture! The more psi the more it's gonna try to atomize the spray

I discovered the 'drop coat" by accident. was spraying Raptor rattle can on a jeep fridge platform and was about 4 coats in of frustrating tiger stripes no matter what i did. so i pulled the spray can about 15" or more away and noticed some of the stripes were going away, but now i need another can to add a couple more drop coats only to finish all the tiger stripes.
@SoWell Garage what did you use for the cleaning part, MEK or Ace Tone?
So I use mineral spirits since it'll clean most grease or oil away. Not to mention it's quite a bit cheaper than acetone 🤣

Im wanting to do a two tone graphic design on my truck. I'm finding it to ne very difficult to find anyone who has done "graphics" using liner. My question is what is the magic moment in where to remove the tape to reveal the graphic.
That's a great question, I think it all depends on how intricate the design is. I haven't personally had to do one but if I'd try letting it tack up and almost dry then peel. Probably about 20-30 minutes dry time
What's the spray can you do before the air gun?
That's adhesion promoter. There's a few different brands and sometimes it is hard to come by but Sherwin Williams automotive stores should have it

Great question! If you can't get one and want to do roll on, basically do the same thing. Roll it on and let it tack up, get a clean roller then go back over it to texture it nicely and evenly!

What are you spraying immediately prior to spraying the liner? Primer? If so what kind?
Raptor liner recommends their etching primer for bare metal and adheasion promoter for plastics / painted surfaces. It looks like he sanded the bumpers, wiped them down with thinner and shot them with Raptor Liner. I have used it a lot, its good stuff !
Would raptor liner work over top of chrome? Would it adhere?
So great question, I've done a bit of painting on chrome and what I would recommend is getting an epoxy primer. Sand it with 180-220 and then epoxy primer it. Maybe if go a little lower with the grit to get really good adhesion but the epoxy primer will help stick to the chrome
Just finish white tint raptor lining my Ram, problem is I ran out of liner and need another coat, kit should be here in 4 days..would I need to sand to apply a 2nd coat or just wipe everything down? If so what grit would you recommend?
Great question! I've done the same a few times, just clean it and then hit it with air to knock any debris off!

What size air compressor do you recommend for shooting liner?
I'm currently using a 26 gallon compressor and it works well but does recharge a few times during a big job. If you can afford to go bigger, go bigger but if what you have is around 26 gallon it'll work just fine

So I've heard that mililani oriellys has tintable but I buy through eBay, they'll ship here and takes around 4-5 days

What if you want to touch up the raptor liner 6 months or a year down the road? Can you just respray it or do you need to resand it?
That's a Great question!!!! So what I do is use a foam brush. Apply a little to the touch up area then let it dry for 15-20 minutes, then hit it with the foam brush, that will mimic the texture
@@SoWellGarage do you apply any adhesion promoter to the area that needs touched up or even etch primer? I have a few spot that have rubbed through in the bed of my truck back down to metal.
I would use adhesion promoter but not primer. Primer is gonna be a different color which might affect a larger area and cause difficulty blending the new with the old
Do you change the pressure at all for the drop coat?
I personally don't but I could see why raising it a bit would help atomize it better.
Is there a concern spraying Raptor Liner over Rustoleum Self Etch Primer? The tech I talked to warned me against it, as it wouldn't adhere. I've got several spots already preped with Self Etch, since I went down to bare metal with sanding. Should I use a 2K primer over the self etch first?
I know this is old, but I prepped and painted my entire 95 Jeep Wrangler with Raptor. I used Rustoleum Self Etch on all metal and used adhesion promoter on plastic. It's been 3 years now and it looks like the day I sprayed it. No adhesion problems whatsoever.
Public opinion question: Would just the front and back bumpers look good with raptor liner on a black Jeep Liberty KK? And would I have to take them off or tape them?
I think it could look good! See as how the bumpers integrate into the fenders I'd just tape

How long can you store the raptor liner after adding the hardener?
Great question, I'm honestly not sure. Even after putting the cap back on the reaction has started and by the end of the day it'll be solid. I'd say you have about a 2 hour window of working time but it also depends on the amount. A thinner or smaller amount will dry faster
What cleaner did you use? And… didn’t it get all over your floor and walls and toolbox and cars in the driveway? I figured you would have to cover everything.
Great question, I use mineral spirits and/or wax and grease remover. Also the over spray does get everywhere. The floors were easy enough to pressure wash off but I'd highly recommend masking and covering as much as possible
Hey man I’m doing a regular cab f250 I stripped the whole truck to bare metal I’m going to apply 2k epoxy primer then the custom coat bed liner which is raptor should I sand the primer if I I’m in the time window for the primer or should I just paint over the primer
If I were you I'd sand the primer slightly. Just to knock off anything that's not fully attached. But raptor liner is very forgiving so it doesn't need to be perfectly flat or super smooth. I'd also recommend the adhesion promoter that raptor liner sells
If you purchase your epoxy sealer from SPI or local dealer, you get a 7 day open window to spray your Raptor liner over it. As the sealer cures chemically, the Raptor liner will grab onto it with an unreal bond. The plus side is the SPI chemically seals your bed better than most on the market. SPI Epoxy sealer is extremely popular in the truck and auto restoration aftermarket, because you can spray it, come in the next day and spray feather fill to sand this high build or use with filler to sand a needed. All will re-spray it if they break thru to metal. Require oil and grease remover (Like Everything) sand with 80 grit, wipe again, air and tack, spray the epoxy and follow with your Raptor. @@deankay4434 hey man well I got the Kirker primer 2k expoxy it’s like 130 dollars a gallon with activator I’ll definitely follow your instructions. I scuffed the truck to bare metal with a abrasive grinder 3m bad material like the scuff pads but it put nice marks in the middle smooth but has the scratches so I’m ready to go I just heard I gotta get rust dissolver spray the whole truck let it cure so the epoxy primer sticks like a tank to the metal as much as possible
If your are talking a rust converter like Eastwood sells, or something else. Southwest Rod and Customs with Pete Hugh’s, has been in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for 28+ years before moving to Moab, UT. But, he has a video where he takes a door outside and mixes muriatic acid (Diluted Hydrochloric Acid) scrubs it down with lots of PPE, scotch bright then uses vinegar water mix to clean off before shooting epoxy. Vinegar alone is a weak acid while muriatic is much stronger. The stuff the sell is a phousporic acid mix that does the same thing, as depending on what you read is good or not so good. It comes down to your wallet, the area that needs fixed, but no one want rust under a top coat of anything unless you don’t plan on keeping it.
I think the grinding pad you were talking about is like a thick scotch bright with almost epoxy holding its shape. Sold by different companies now, never used one but some get good results in videos. I just don’t want to spent $60 for something I can do for $10. Best of luck with your project!

@@deankay4434 thanks man yeah it’s kinda like what Eastwood sells but it’s pricer a bit better results reviews it’s called rustblast by KBS coatings I called Eastwood today and they said that it’s good to use a rust dissolver coating on bare metal before you paint on it especially in Florida where I live the expoxy primer it gonna stick great to it
So it was just one coat with 50% overlay plus what you call the drop coat, right?
Basically! But you can always do more! I tend to go heavy in areas that I know will see a lot of abuse
Would you recommend doing a "drop coat" if you were spraying an entire vehicle?
Yes!!! That's exactly what I do when lining an entire vehicle, if you don't you'll more than likely get banding.

That's a great question, it does have a little bit of flex to it but not a lot. I've used it on wood and seems to adhere and flex fine with wood bit I'm curious how "flexible" it would be with steel

I'm using a 26 gallon craftsman compressor that's rated at 150 PSI max

I have a 26 gallon Craftsman. I can generally get a little more than half way through spraying a truck bed before it needs to kick on again.
