This is why I love watching BJ. I have a soft spot for the old cheap bangers.
With you and Matt having kids at or close to driving age. I'd love to see a "bolt on only" build, that maybe us mere mortals with no fab skills and limited budget could do at home.
Keep up the good work from Australia!!!

That looks great! I have not ever painted a vehicle with a brush or roller, but my wife's brothers and sisters were nice enough to paint their dad's van with brushes and house paint when they were little! It didn't turn out near as good as yours, but their hearts were in the right place. Needless to say, he was definitely surprised!

Colt, you will never be lost with that paint job! Rat's Nest can be spotted from space, now! I have actually rolled paint on a car! It's been 15-ish years, back when the interwebs was abuzz with the roll on Rustoleum paint job. I helped a buddy paint his tubbed Gremlin with rollers. It came out pretty good, though he caved and sprayed the final coat.

Yes I have painted my daily driver with a roller, a 16 year old toyota. My friends laughed for a while cause I didn't spend like 3 to 4 grand to paint it, but I got the job done, the car looked decent and it held up ok for about 2 years now. It was worth it given the fact that I spend under 100 $ for that paintjob. Painting the metal of a car is not such a big deal if you don't want showroom perfection, it's when you have rust when the problems appear and it becomes harder to DIY.

A cool paint trick we use in our shop is we use 1/4" soft rope around the window weather stripping and it allows us to paint around the weather stripping and it comes out super clean. Great video by the way

I painted a 62 Scout with a roller. I used oil based Rust-Oleum brown, it looked like a new car compared to the ugly green and silver and black... The best thing after a day of rubbing trees and rocks I would just dust it off, open a quart of paint and hit it with a brush. New again for the drive to work.

I've roll pained two vehicles , here is what I've learned. 1st was with tractor paint (similar colour to this jeep - Deutz green). It went on quite thin and was over a darker coulour. Took 3 coats to make it a solid colour, sanding between each coat. From a few feet you couldn't tell it was rolled on. It did fade after a few years, but rubbing compound by hand and 2 days effort (by hand) mad it look good again. 2nd one military vehicle paint. 1 and done,no 2nd coat needed. But looks textured, not as obvious as the bedliner, but form 3m (10ft) you can tell its not a spray paint job. I sprayed one with this type of paint 15 years ago, and it still looks the same as a week after I painted it - dull but ok.

Decades ago I repainted my 73 K30 work truck with Rust-Oleum , thinned slightly with an expensive brush, then leveled it up with spray bombs in the same color. Came out rather nicely, lol. Great DIY for most, have thought about those liner paints, certainly will wear well. & prep is the difference in quality work. Thanx !

A cool trick with hardener is always use what the manufacturer says no matter the temp outside so at a molecular level it is correct and doesn't do weird stuff months down the road. If it's like 110 or so outside you can put the hardener in the fridge or freezer because if it thinks it's 30 degrees outside it will harden slower than if it thinks it's 110

I was about to paint my teardrop camper with this stuff until I saw this video in my feed a couple days ago. Did not like the aggressive texture he had, so I changed out my roller for 1/4" nap that is solvent resistant. Love it, it's like it was sprayed on now, love the product, did mine in emerald, green. You get about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs work time using a brush and roller. Definitely use a respirator, up to pulling tape and walking out. I need a roof fan in the future.

Just out of High-school I had Chevy panel van that I turned into a camper inside. I used to to hunt out of so I and a friend raddle can painted it camo that would make a army truck envious, some years later a cousin died and I had to make a trip south to the funeral. Those family members that were riding along with me were not impressed by having to go to a funeral in Camo hunting truck. After taking some heat from my Mother I went to Lowe's and got all the stuff needed to roller paint the van. Egg shell exterior latex looked great and it lasted for several years.

That reminds me of painting my motorcycle tank when I worked in a motorcycle shop. My mechanic peers called it a half-mile tank. I said no, it isn't for a half-mile race bike, it is for my trials competition bike. They said I was confused, that the paint job looked good from half-mile away. ;)
I have a 99 XJ too, and have wanted to make the bottom half red. This may be the way to do it. Thanks, it does help make it seem possible only my garage is full of machinist tools, so it will be outside this summer.
It is a good thing you are big like a Clydesdale. Hoods are hard.
    Gas door should be green...

HAHA! Nice! I did a roll on bed liner on a blazer once. It turned out pretty decent. One tip I would suggest, depending on how you want the texture to be, use a foam roller so you don't have such a textured layer. It will go on smooth and then you typically don't have to worry about pieces coming off into the paint either.

Bahaha that amazing fool puts me to shame , I’ve got 12 yrs of working in the field . My dad had a 1975 Chevy van. We peeled the paint off primed it kind of and roller ed the paint on heavy. It took a half gallon. At 30 ft it looked great up close not so much
