That tribute to Oliver Postgate is one of the best bits of telly I've ever seen. Charlie can come off as crude and cynical so much of the time but behind it there is a genuine appreciation of quality in television (something I guess he feels he rarely finds as so much of his output is about being critical of TV). He nails so many of the aspects of Postgate's work that made it so good, such as the quietness and hypnotic voice. And his delivery in this segment lacks the usual attitudinal stuff and shows, as some have already said, humility.
Could someone do Oliver Postgate level children's TV these days? Maybe if they were working independently with no particular hope of being on mainstream channels. To do animation tho they'd still have to be funded. But we keep a lot from our formative years and so much of children's time is taken up with things like telly, so it really does matter what they're being fed with.
I believe this was the last part of the last episode of the last series of Screenwipe? What a way to go out.

Oh my God this is the best part from any Screenwipe I've ever seen. Ever. The first part was the funniest, the second part was absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking. Also, I think I detected the use of music by Stars of the Lid in the part about mr. Postgate. That automatically makes this one of the best things ever seen on television. I had me in reverential awe.

Oliver Postgate was a legend. I adore Bagpuss. One of my favourite gifts ever was a Bagpuss that when you squeezed it you heard the yawning sound. A true hero of childrens T.V. R.I.P.

I love Charlie Brooker more than I can describe with words here. I wish that more presenters/journalists had his flare, wit and humility.

For me my version of Oliver Postage was Sir Derek Jacobi, the Narrator of “In the Night Garden...” because the tone of both of their voices seemed to draw me in whenever Night Garden or a Smallfilms show was about to start! I still remember all the words to the In the Night Garden... intro, the episodes and of course the “Go To Sleep” sequence at the end of the Programme (including the “Somebody’s not in Bed! Who’s Not In Bed? IgglePiggle’s Not In Bed! (IgglePiggle Squeaks and falls on the floor) Don’t Worry IgglePiggle, It’s Time To Go! (IgglePiggle gets up and starts waving, Cue End Credit sequence)” Part) where as Oliver had “Something’s Coming! Something’s Coming Down! Everybody hide quickly!!” And of course most of what made up his other programmes like “Ivor The Engine” and “Bagpuss”

The difference in sound between Bagpuss etc, and anything from the mid-late 80s onwards, really is very noticeable. A lot of children's TV from about He-Man on has lots of rapid chattering and noisy music, and even when they talk it's meaningless tripe or heavy-handed, moralising claptrap.
Bagpuss and Trumpton/Camberwick Green were serene and quiet. Even the original Postman Pat was quiet. The opening of the Clangers shows kids telly doesn't need to be endless gibbering and silly fart noises.

Problem about viacom is it own everything so you can't for instance boycot it. WHen you boycot viacom, you stop going to the cinema alltogether, you stop renting DVDs, stop buying music. You like the daily show and stephen colbert? Too bad. Oh you thought they were on your side, I'm so sorry.
