The ride and seat height of the xB is a true underrated quality! great point. These things have so many different values to a broad set of people, truly an underrated gem coming from the Toyota engineers.
You caputred the essence of what makes the xB great! Practicality and reliability combined with design that's unlike anything else! Got my xB new and my friends still make fun of it (and compare it to Saturn), but its been an amazing car and I have no plans of getting rid of it any time soon
Janky do Thanky! great comment, that's wonderful you've owned it since new and continue to do so. Simply owning a car a long time is one of the best things one can do from a sustainability standpoint, underrated factor. Let em make fun of it when you can fit more stuff in it then their curvy 3 row SUV!
Scion was a gimmick but the best kind of gimmick.. Scion is a Toyota at the end of the day with that comes reliability, fuel efficiency, reliability, cheap parts, easy to find parts. My family has gone through 3 xbs the first two ran forever and they would still be running of they didn't get wrecked in accidents. I have one at the moment and love it drive an hour to and from work comfortably have enough space for a road trip with the family, parts to mod it are so cheap it gets me from point A to point B how it's supposed to. It's not a high end car but when you need something that will last you can't go wrong with a Toyota Scion xb!
The word "gimmick" is so loaded, but I completely agree w you. It's just funny that Toyota thought it needed all the brand hoopla to sell a car which was clearly already a good idea. But in the end it adds a little fun provenance to it. I knew someone with a 1st gen xB that had a huge lightning wrap on it, got t-boned at over 300k, I was personally very mad at the offending driver because I never got to review it. Janky do Thanky for the comment, I'd love to drive another one, particularly a stick-shift.
This is one of the best Scion history video I watch on TH-cam. I just picked up a 2016 Scion TC base, with a 6 Speed Manual Transmission. it will soon look modified and I'm keeping it, for many years to come. I thought about just driving my Camry and letting the TC sit so I'm not putting kilometers on it. I'm the 3rd owner, it has a minor Front end accident police report on the title history. I asked the Dealership about that, they said it was the Front bumper cover with another vehicle. It drives solid, no suspension noise and it feels smooth. Till I drop the ride height then it'll be bumpy.
Hey really appreciate the kind words! Ive always been fascinated with the Scion story and worked pretty hard on the research. TC’s are great didnt know the manual was a 6-speed thats really cool! Actually just reviewed a 2002 Camry, vx 30, what gen is yours? Sounds like a great 2nd car and you can take your time on it and make it really nice. Good luck with the build, i wouldnt be scared with any bumper damage, embrace the jank! Happy janksgiving to ya thanks for the comment.
Wow this is the 3rd or 4th report ive gotten from someone with super high mileage, 300k or more. Seems like these xB’s were underrated by even me, and i thought it was a great car. Janky do thanky keep on truckin!
@@aprilmiller2374 Nothing special i guess. I just drive to work everyday 22 miles each way. Mostly back roads, 6 miles on the hwy to work. It gets 30-32
I have a 2009 Scion xb I bought new. It just turned 100,000 miles a few months ago and it has been a great vehicle. It has front wheel drive and it is so easy to chirp the front tires because of the torque in it. I have a small dent in the front hood from something that was kicked up from the opposite side, but overall it is still in excellent shape. I hope to keep this until the whells fall off!
Wow actually 100,000 miles is quite low if you've had it since new! Sounds like a great little buggy, I'd say with proper care and maintenance you should be good for another 100,000 easy! I knew someone with a first gen xB that had over 300,000 and sadly was t-boned and totaled, which is such a shame because who knows how high it could've went. Keep drivin! Janky do thanky
I bought my Cherry xB in 2006 and I love my car! My Scion "Miss Cherry" was my daily ride to work and I've now retired in 2021. Such a reliable car with just the basic wear that was taken care of the moment it showed up. Got regular oil changes, rotated wheels, changed brake pads one time, three battery changes and just last month added freon for the first time since I bought the car? Go figure. It's at 148K miles and the only thing that I haven't fixed are the maintenance lights that won't turn off? I just changed the engine filter and then the lights disappeared for 4 days but came back on again. Need to make an appointment with my mechanic to check on those lights. Lastly, Miss Cherry needs some cosmetics to her exterior as there is some paint peeling going on 3/4 of the body. Went and got three quotes and they all quoted 10k and North of there. Ugh. I live in Hawaii, I think that's the real reason. It's Hella Expensive to live here. Too bad Scion changed the xB design drastically, I find the box shape cute and more than likely a future collectible too. Great video!
Janky do Thanky, and Aloha, I have a great fondness for Hawaii, tho I have heard its quite pricey to live there. Is it just the clear coat that is failing? Painting cars nowadays is extremely expensive, probably why most people just get wraps. If you don't care about the resale value you could always paint it yourself, and if your really feeling crazy perhaps a custom art job with some Cherry motifs. Ha, but probably not wise to take car-painting advice from this channel, we depreciate the value of all the cars we buy, just a little janky public service. My Fiat X1/9 was delivered new to Hawaii, one of the reasons I bought it so I can have a little piece of Hawaii with me at all times. But the sea salty air definitely took a toll on it as well, quite a bit of surface rust on the doors and rockers, but luckilly the shock towers and window surrounds are all good, which is the really important stuff. I have a lead on a 1st gen xB to review and really hoping I get too, yea the 1st gen's uber-toaster look certainly has all the makings of a future classic. Good luck with Miss Cherry hope you get the lights resolved and make it to 200K and beyond!
$1K for maintenance after 146K miles is completely justified. I have one of these. It's a great car, cavernous interior, unique exterior. I average 27 mpg with the manual transmission. It's been very reliable
So curious why the "box" isnt utilized more as an automotive design ethos. As a huge Ford Aerostar enthusiast the xB fits right in my wheelhouse, especially with the manual transmission option. And very respectable mpgs I'd say for a non-hybrid.
Hilarious because that is just the opposite of what Toyota seemed to be going for in their massive marketing campaign. The other Scion owner I know personally is a 93 year old gentleman who kept it in Florida as his run around car when down there. Old people in Scion's and young kids in Buick's, its a great world

I have a 2008 xB, auto trans, 250,000 miles, basically trouble tree. Just maintenance. I also have a 2006 xB, 202,000 miles, auto trans. Both are great cars.
wow almost a half million miles between them, major janky do thanky. A good friend had a 1st gen that was over 300,000 miles when it got t-boned, which was tragic because it was still going strong, and of course selfishly i missed out on a review of it.
@@JankyAF yes. They are very very reliable. I am involved with a scion club on Facebook, and there is somebody with a 1st gen XB with 700,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. They are tanks. The car will completely rust and fall apart before the engines give up. Assuming it's maintained like it's suppose to be. And driven with care.
Yeah, I've got a 2009 XB. I love it. If I ever have to replace it, i'll look for a used 2016. Talk about parts availability, drive train is the same as Camry.
I've said it once and I'll say it again, I love the love for the xB, I never get tired of hearing the enthusiasm for these things, makes me feel good that they have developed their own little culture, and with their reliability seems like they will be around for many years to come. janky do thanky
I love my 2015 lifted Scion xB. Turn my hatchback city cruiser, into a rigged af off-road/soft-road box on wheels. 2.5” lift, 215/70/16. And with 17.3 mpg. Yeah that’s bad. But as a daily, it’s not bad as I was expecting it. Took me 1.5 weeks before putting more gas from F-E. I’m not complaining. U don’t buy for mpg? U buy for fun. I had a 2011 used Scion xB with 172k miles. No issues at all. And traded with 2015 for a fresh start. So 10 years of owning Scion xB. And I can’t get enough of it.
Janky do thanky, this is amazing. I can't say I'm surprised because I had a hunch they were out there, but I am really impressed with the love that's come out of the xB in the comments section, and its made me confident that the Scion brand will always have a solid following in the car culture. A lifted xB sounds awesome, and yes, "smiles per gallon" is a real thing. I always think the mark of a "classic" is serial ownership, so many people I know who had Ford Aerostars growing up had two of them, usually bought one after another, and clearly the xB is that for you. I've heard 300 and 400,000 miles on these things, Toyota's reliability really is incredible. If you have some pictures of that lift I'd love to see that - afjanky@gmail.com - janky do thanky and happy toastering
Was my advice to the owner as well, but eventually he got into a really nice AWD CR-V. I'm sure this one is still out there tho, it has a lot of life left in it. Janky do thanky.
It’s hilarious when I watch the video and slowly start to recognize the buildings in the background, and then realize you’re driving around a block away from my house 😂
I’m looking to buy one I saw one 2012 Scion I’m planning to go n test drive it hopefully it’s a good one n no oil burning issues like some other TH-camr mentioned Thank you
I have a 15 manual XB. Its fun and zippy with excellent build quality (something lesser on first Gen). Unlike the first Gen, its got great safety ratings, too.
I would love to drive a 1st gen, but I feel like these (2nd gen) are indeed built much better, I think the 1st gen is a cult classic but it was strange how few years it was produced, especially cause it seemed pretty popular at the time too. The 2nd gen looks have grown on me, I would love to drive a manual one. Is the shifter kinda up high like the auto? Ha yea 1st gen probly not the safest tin can. Janky do Thanky, I have a real soft spot for the brand.
@@JankyAF its up on the dash like the Honda Civic Si early 2000’s. Perfect location. The last couple years have a nice arm rest as well. The XB1 is neat, but Low on power and scary in accidents. It feels tinnier.
@@djkenny1202 Yea just looking at the outside of the gen 1 seems like it would be pretty tin-boxy on the inside. Still would like to drive one tho. That's awesome about the gearshift position, and good call on those early 2000's Si's, seems like those are super rare and i remember the big boot ala the honda element on the gear shift lever. happy motoring!
The thing is none of the issues that this car has despite being rode hard and put away wet are serious. It could easily be fixed up for minimal cost and the car would be good for at least another 150,000 miles. Now I will admit, I prefer the first generation XB to your friend's second generation, but they were both excellent cars. I just think that the first generation was more excellent. I also feel like the first generation car was a little bit more in keeping with the mission of the brand.
"more excellent" - I love this description, and I happen to agree, its more "pure" from a styling standpoint. Between you and me I really wanted the car to be saved as well, and it was traded in, so I'm sure its probably out there still. I think whereas the benchmark used to be 100,000 miles (and nowadays has kind of come back there) then toyota and honda kind of said no, the benchmark should be 200,000 miles, and a new standard of longevity was made in the 80's thru 2000's, and now I think it should be 300,000. That's what I'm trying to get my '15 Prius V to, I think 300,000 should be the benchmark. And I know someone who had a 1st gen xB that had like 280,xxx and was doing great until it got t-boned. Sad story. A manual 1st gen xB is a true collector car at this point I'd say. Thanks for the comment! Love the love for the Scion brand.
Not shabby at all. I kind of consider 30mpg the benchmark as "good mileage" so considering the toaster aerodynamics and all the storage capacity id say that's impressive. Its funny too that a lot of early hybrid small suv's will get less than that. janky do thanky
Ha, well sort of. I do not currently live there, but visit as often as I can, and have called it home 4 separate times. So basically my home away from home. My 04 Chevy Malibu review also takes place in Buffalo, as I hope many future reviews will as well! Janky do Thanky
No every car is NOT a great car.. Japanese? Yes. Domestic? NO. ( By the way- some Saturn's had Honda engines) and I'm guessing your friend doesn't regularly maintain it either..
I am aware that some Saturn Vue's had honda engines, the 1st gen vue is a favorite of mine, and i believe offered with a manual transmission. Overall I'd say the car was very well maintained, considering it lived in the northeast and had to be street-parked in the city of buffalo for a decade. The exhaust was the pressing issue, and even that was just a little farty really. The car was actually traded in for a Honda CRV. By the way, does a Saturn Vue with a Honda engine count as a domestic or foreign car? And is it then great?
Yeah, that friend was a total failure. Thought just because it was Japanese it could run maintenance free. Dummie! You should get him on the phone ASAP and give ‘em hell!
2nd gen sucks I'm sorry. People love the xb because of it's awesome cargo space and great mpgs. 1st gen gets 30/34 while the second gets 22/28? It lost it's appeal. Toyota messed up.
Ha I simply love that there are fervant opinions being cast upon this car, proves to me that these are important and noteworthy. I can totally get with the argument that the 1st gen is much purer and arguably much cooler, and I think something like MPG should be very important in this segment and think both cars should have got better mileage, boxy and all. but 34 is pretty respectable. And it is very curious to me why they totally redesigned the car after only 3 years or whatever it was, definitely seems like a mistake in hindsight given how lauded the 1st gens are. The thing I ultimately think it came down to, and this is just a hunch, is making the interior a little quieter and the car in general a little sturdier, which would of course explain the worse mileage too. I like em both in their own way, I think a manual in the 2nd gen would totally change it too, having not driven one. janky do thanky for the comment
I have a lifted Scion xB2.5. And 215/70/16. And since it’s now a considered gas guzzler because it has 17.3 mpg. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 and to be honest with u. Even if u think that I will fill up with gas every 4-5 days, just by goin from work to home, groceries, or go cruz. It took me almost 1.5 weeks which that’s not too bad. When it was winter, it hit my mpg really bad. It had 14.8 mpg. That took me 4-5 days for as. That was bad. But now it’s went back to 17.3 and I got no complains. 22 mpg city and 28 on the highway is not horrible. It’s a decent mpg for city hatchback.

@@JankyAF it’s a pleasure man. DonMr u have a IG though? If not, I will get the cha de to send u pics of mine through email
@@JankyAF I sent an email to u man. 👌🏼
Listen, put the 1000 dollars into the car, it’ll go another 100k easily
Was my advice to the owner as well, but eventually he got into a really nice AWD CR-V. I'm sure this one is still out there tho, it has a lot of life left in it. Janky do thanky.
It’s hilarious when I watch the video and slowly start to recognize the buildings in the background, and then realize you’re driving around a block away from my house 😂
Aha! Very good, always happy when my travels bring me to the Queen City! Janky do thanky, happy janksgiving
I’m looking to buy one I saw one 2012 Scion I’m planning to go n test drive it hopefully it’s a good one n no oil burning issues like some other TH-camr mentioned
Thank you
Sorry for my late response, did you end up getting a Scion? If so would love to hear how it worked out.
@@JankyAF no I didn’t
@@JankyAF not lots of love for r that gen Civic Si. My mother in law has Roomates with one. In black. I put the word out I’d like to buy it.
love my 2014 xb
great to hear! janky do thanky
I get 25 city and 30+ highway
Not shabby at all. I kind of consider 30mpg the benchmark as "good mileage" so considering the toaster aerodynamics and all the storage capacity id say that's impressive. Its funny too that a lot of early hybrid small suv's will get less than that. janky do thanky
Quirky little bastards
Lol
lol you live in buffalo
@@JankyAF all about mpgs. Especially with todays gas prices.
I hear that. Surprising they didn't do a hybrid or something
I get 25 city and 30+ highway
