After a mutually unfortunate run-in with a deer, our 1993 Ford Aerostar Sport was deemed a total loss. With some insurance money burning a whole in our pocket, and a compensatory obsession with thrift, how cheaply can we assemble all the parts we need to nurse our Aerostar back to life. The answer, my friends, is blowin' in the wind.

New to the channel, cool video!!
So glad you are getting her put back together! I need to post pics of my 97 restoration soon... it's crazy where the rust hides!
your enthusiasm for the jank is awesome
you should do an Aerostar with all the body panels a different colors like some VW Harlequin edition of the 90's 🙂
If you’re not wearing your seat belt just pull the one from the passenger’s side and click it into your side to silence the beeping.
It looks dinky next to that Econoline! Man vehicles have grown to accommodate our waistlines! 🤣
Might hit the bottom of that new panel with some rust reformer or paint. I've gotten extra years from doing that. I too like all the mix-and-match colors so black at the base not a problem for me LOL.
jealous of those headphones
Man I could use that drivers door panel. Nice find dude.
Vans are the supreme vehicles for efficiency in general. They would suit most people who think they need a pick up truck.
I'm glad someone is showing love to these forgotten 2000s American made sedans which were, for the most, actually pretty reliable! The 4cyl Malibu is one of the best commuter cars, since they use the same engine as the S-10. I love the older Oldsmobile cars like the 98 Royale, but the 4cyl Alero is a great car that gets slept on too much. It's basically an American made Honda Civic. Also the good ol' fantastic plastic Saturn SL1 should never be left out of reliable transportation. Obviously on the Ford side we had all the good ol' reliable panther platforms, too. The American car market was on the cusp of greatness when the recession hit which shuttered so many makers, it's really the biggest shame we never got to see what could have been. I do agree, too, that Pontiac was cooking but got shuttered early which is indeed a sad story.
These were decent cars. Granted, I liked the generation after this one. Mom had a 5th gen, 2001. If I needed a car in a pinch, I'd drive this.
We had a windstar
As soon as you said they should make a electric version I immediately ended the video electric 😷🚮🗑️🤢🤮
11:45 In Cleveland, someone would shoot John Lennon , so no downtown trips to the Rock Hall ,lol
11:07 That's a graphic from the front of an old King Crimson LP Famous for a song named "Maggot Brain"
Interesting… I always thought that it was the cover of the debut album called “In the Court of the Crimson King”
It IS sha-GRINN Falls Ohio, and you could see the falls on FOX8 Cleveland local news most anyday (or recordings) 7:13
That maroon fender actually looks pretty cool. Ties in with center caps.
It is pronounced "Shuh grin". It's about 30 mins south of me.
Fun fact, the Aerostar is in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as the Moonbeam, stunning, also I saw the collection vid (my first vid I saw) and everything is amazing :)
It may be in the later GTA games, but it may be based off different vans
I always thought that was meant to be a Chevy Astra, which to me always felt like a knockoff Aerostar anyway. (When Mom says "we have Aerostar at home")
@drewzero1 it honestly could be tbh, but I looked at the color and front end and thought maybe idk
@@officiallilsideshow Could be both, I think all of the GTA cars are meant to be open to interpretation.
I love the 96' Ford Aerostar, because it has the XL 2-tone. They are probably my favorite Areostars. Edit, I hope you fix your Areostar that got hit by a deer.
what a beautiful septembwr day!!
My grandpa's '85 Ranger had those dog dish hub caps that looked like they had the locking hubs. What a classy look! He always lamented trading it in for his '95 2WD 4banger ranger, said his Aerostar was a much better truck.
Lenny is cool!:)
So cool house!
Nice fleet, Brother. Every one of them is cool. I still have two LeSabres in my modest fleet of four. Keep 'em coming!
That's a magnificent king cab aerostar truck
My experience with late 70s and into 80s cars with carburetors is that sputtering was usually a lean problem. The malaise era was all about emissions and economy. Everything else including drivability and power was sacrificed. My impression is all were designed to run lean from the get go. No idea if the mid--80s 2.3L was notorious for it or not.
My radiator/cooling system has had constant problems. I replaced the coupling in the upper radiator cooling tube system. But the coolant reservoir intake tube is a joke. The tube is the circumference of a phone wire and is crazy thin. Breaks into pieces without even touching it. Ford is a terrible company that no one should buy from.
Reminds me of the Element skateboard logo.
All X1/9s come with a parts car. :)
IS THAT BROWN AEROSTAR THE HOLY GRAIL?? I LUV ANYTHING WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION,BRUUH..😃😂
Great collection, a few of my favorite childhood cars. My dad used to put his sunglasses up on the dash and we'd laugh when they slid across on every turn. We had a '92 LeSabre for a while; I never thought of it as a large car because we replaced it with a Park Avenue that was even bigger. My grandparents had a '93 Aerostar XLT that I learned to drive in. I could never figure out how you'd get to the engine to work on it... Does the hatch over the transmission tunnel give any access to the engine?
After the Buicks my parents both had mk4 Jettas, and Dad always wished his was a wagon. That was probably my favorite generation of Jetta. (I wonder if the Eddie Bauer edition would still smell like crayons inside.)
Dude, I totally understand you. I collect odd cars too. I’ve got a 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora and my friends make fun of me. I love that car, it’s so quirky. So much character. Keep it up man, glad I found your channel.
The Aurora was by far the coolest Oldsmobile of the 90s, with the V8 in front and those grand swooping curves leading to the magnificent taillight. I rode in a lot of bland Oldses as a kid (Ciera, Eighty-Eight, etc.) but I always got excited seeing an Aurora on the road.
Janky Leno! Jay's collection has nothing on yours, player. The pride in your voice as you wax poetically about these vehicles is inspiring. A frankensteined version of an Aerostar cab with a Ranger bed attached would be a great work vehicle. And I know a crew who could paint it orange if need be.
That guy in the Austin Healey or whatever was probably like "this MF got a Fiat X19 and he's over here looking at a damn Ford Aerostar!" 😂 awesome fleet, forgot that the aerostars were RWD and could have sticks!
Haha, he had a little Patina going on on that thing, so I'd like to think he was supportive of the whole fleet. Maybe I could do a quarter mile drag race against him in my Aero, the 3.0 'Sport might have a fighting chance... Janky do thanky for the kind words, been loving these comments. Was really fun to make this and reflect a bit on my assorted acquisitions, and great to see some people dig it!
Enjoying the video! Awesome presentation! Love listening to you talking about cars! Great energy! Janky do thanky! Waiting for an Orange car! Thanks for the camera man!
Haha, I will pass along the kind words to the camera man! He is loving the Jetta, already getting it detailed and shined up, will have to provide an update soon enough. They did make those X1/9's in a beautiful bright burnt orange, I've lusted after one of those. I have seen two Orange Aerostars ever, not factory, but I think service or highway vehicles or something, it wears orange extremely well. Janky do thanky for your janky do thanky!
They all bare the seasoning from my childhood, them vans got me. My father ran through them regularly due to hauling his equipment from work. Love them.
Just something about an Aerostar, huh? Pretty darn good payload capacity for a minivan too. I really want to get a 4wd/awd one day, and see what that thing can do in the winter... Janky do Thanky
Great video, sir. Keep ‘em coming.
Janky do Thanky! It was really a pleasure making this video. No more car buying for awhile! But plenty of window shopping and tinkering on the existing fleet itself. Really appreciate the comment
😆😆😆😆😆
Looks like the "driveway inside my Mind" 🤯😆🚙🛻🚗🚓🚐
Haha, make it a reality! Or maybe just buy one or two....I got a little carried away, don't quite have Hoovies Garage money, but if I ever did, it would probably all go into more Aerostars, and I'm not sure that could get 1 million subscribers. Those Buicks and Aerostars tho, they are out there and can be had for very cheap. Sadly, the purchase is just the beginning of the expenses.
Still trying to find an early aerostar with the 2.3
Good luck! Would love to see some pictures if you track one down. Through my many episodes of my Aerostar classifieds searching, I've realized that most likely the 3.0 was offered in 1986, maybe not at the very beginning but shortly into their run, and that the 2.3 and 2.8 engines were likely just place holders until the Taurus development was finished. Still one of the best exhaust notes I've ever heard, just a wonderful farty burble. Janky do Thanky
The x1/9 was such neat little car. Troubled, but neat.
saw at acar show later labelled as a "Pininfarina" -the design firm carried it on its' shoulders here in usa for awhile.
Ha, yea I have had my "troubles" - but honestly a lot has been just never having the time or bandwidth (again, self inflicted with all the cars) to get it really dialed in, so we're still in shakedown mode all these years later. I am leaning more and more towards the K20 swap just because it becomes such a more modern car, and eventually I would like to pretty much daily it in the summer season. Just can't beat the looks or the uniqueness of it, truly the only affordable mid engine exotic ever made. I suppose we should count the Porsche 914 as well...
Are you sure it wasn't "Bertone"? because they were imported by Bertone after 1982. The Fiat 2000's, or spyders, which were styled by Pininfarina, were also I believe sold as Pininfarina's, I'm guessing from 1983-on because of Fiat leaving the US market. Those are very cool as well! My Uncle had one and its what got me into the Fiat mark.
@@JankyAF watch the reverse gear…
@@JankyAF yeah, after some thought, it was Bertone 🤔
When I was a car dealer in the 90's and early 2000's I have sold dozens of them they hold up pretty well
Which do u speak of, Aerostar? Or LeSabres? Or maybe Jetta's?
I drive a 1988 a baby blue lincoln town car with dark blue interior 98k miles now im the only one that drives one in the entire city I live in.
Wow, what a great spec, I love the baby blue, its probably the same shade that came on the Aerostars. It's funny there is another 7th gen LeSabre in white that looks exactly like mine (same pre-facelift front end) so I have a decoy in town. Those town cars are so awesome, is it the 5.0? Sounds like you have many more miles ahead! Janky do thanky
@@JankyAF 5.0 yep 4 speed overdrive its a base model no add ons
Literally me, I own 2 Geos and I need more weird "regular" cars
I love the Geo brand! Are they Storm's? Metro's? The great Carolla clones, what were they called? Janky do Thanky
@@JankyAF 2 Prizms (the Corolla clone) one 1991 base model 3 speed auto and one 1994 LSi with a 5 speed
Ah yes of course the prizm! I had a 2000 carolla, loved that thing, wish I still had it. Nice you got one for the highways and one for the country roads!
@@JankyAF mhm, one of them (the 1991) is currently non-opped and needs a headgasket, the entire time I've owned it it's been running with a blown headgasket. no coolant in the oil but there's oil in the coolant
42yr wrencher here. I have worked on all of the models you have in your fleet, at one time or another. Fiat not so much. I really enjoy your energy. You are just a likable good guy. I drive beaters others gave up on fix them and as you know when you just do the simple things on maintenance issues they will last forever. 99 civic 11 escape 12 odyssey. Really enjoyed the content. 63 cincinnati oh here.
Wow, that a nice fleet you have listed! I love the honda odyssey's, I have had a chance to drive a few of the older ones, your generation and the one before it (Always loved the generation just before that one too) - I reviewed an Escape from around that time period as well and found it great, loved the boxy-ness of it. I had a circa 2002 civic, pre-facelift, gold sedan with a manual, absolutely loved that car, only car I've ever crashed (loved it a little too much) - the 99 generation hatchback is a bucket list car for me. Really appreciate those kind words, you just can't take yourself too seriously at the end of the day, and so I try to keep things laid back, even tho I can be pretty intense in my mind sometimes. Cars should be fun, even with the headaches that the janky ones throw at you sometimes. Bought my '93 Aerostar out of Columbus OH, I've always found interesting vehicles in OH, and a lot of Aerostars. Fiat not so much, but at all? Curious if you ever encountered one in your days of wrenching. I have the utmost respect for mechanics, I'm trying to learn a little here and there but the sad reality is it usually is easier to stay in my lane as a painter and leave the major stuff to the professionals, but I'm finding my way when I can. Its a fun little puzzle for me. Janky do Thanky, take care out there, who knows maybe an Aerostar will cross your path again someday...
I'm moving to rural Michigan so I can have a yard full of shit-bomb cars too. Soft spot for Peugeot 504's and VW Dashers.....Go ahead and try to find one. i'm ancient enough to remember riding in brand new Aerostar vans.
If I ever get to heaven or invent a time machine (whichever happens first) I think the first thing I will do is go to my local Ford Dealer and drive a brand new one off the lot. There are a couple of cream puff Aeros left with basically new paint, and they just glisten, I love patina and all - obviously - but there is something to be said for a mint condition classic, because it really does take you all the way back, and you can imagine what an impression it had when it was new. Ha, I wish you nothing but the best with your yard of shit-bomb cars. The 504's and Dasher's (which the internet has told me was basically the genesis of the Passat? is that correct) are both great choices to collect. I'd love a french car one day, so much to like about em, and I think Peugeot would be my mark, as I've had bicycles by them before, and I love the logo. Janky do Thanky! best of luck
Nice sleds Brutha!!!
Aerostar FTW!! Brings back childhood mems. I can't remember the channel, but some guy had a video of his modded out car, it was pretty sick. But in the background in his garage he had pristine Aerostar....everyone in the comment section was more interested in that vs his car lol
Ha, that story certainly checks out. Aerostar always steals the show. I took the '93 Sport to a car show and all the old gear heads in their modded out hot rods all pooled together and voted for the Aerostar for best in show, I think mostly as a joke but I'd like to think their was a little bit of seriousness in their hearts, standing up for the underappreciated. We didn't win, but the point had been made. I think we're up to 5 Aero's sold on bring a trailer, and the comments section of those listings is usually pure gold, I think sometimes (as I alluded to in the vid) people don't even realize what a spot the Aerostar had in their consciousness until they see one again, and then it all comes rushing back. Kind of cool. Janky do Thanky!
@@JankyAF hahaha love it bro! Cheers!
