  • This is my review of the ‪@altrarunning‬ Vanish Tempo after 50km. I bought them to buddy up with my Altra Vanish Carbon.

    Nice review. I picked up a pair recently and did 12 miles in them. They were very cushioned....not quite as snappy as I was expecting, but nice to run in. My right foot which is my bigger foot did start to feel a little snug as the miles went on...but nothing I couldn't push through. Tried to wiggle my toes and flex my foot and that usually did the trick. Currently debating if I can trust these to do a marathon on....or if I should go w/ something more comfortable and spacious like the Torin 5 or 6 which I just picked up.

      I would personally choose speed over comfort when it comes to race day. Comfort is important during training, but I'd like to get all the advantage I can get for race day, even if it means sore feet afterwards 😅 not always the best strategy, but I don't get to race that often.

    I really enjoy mine, I think I wear them for everything but easy days if they weren't so expensive. Makes the Torin feel flat and not that cushioned making me want to do long runs in then. And then set a parkrun PB in them yesterday.

    How do they perform when running on road after it has been raining? I.e. is the grip slippy on wet roads?

    I am genuinely surprised with this shoe. Bought it just because it was dirt cheap (less than EUR 80) and did not expect the midsole to be so different from all the other Altras I've owned. Now it's my favourite shoe for speedwork. And it does not matter that the colourway simply sucks (white it the most ridiculous colour for shoes, no shoe manufacturers can figure it out!), and they look so ugly-yuck! I prefer them to my Endorphin Speed 2s, as the tempos don't damage my toes and the plateless midsole feels as lively as plastic-plated Speeds.

    I enjoy your Altra reviews. I recall you having bad plantar fasciitis at one point (which I also suffer from now!). Do the Tempos or rockered Altras in general aggregate your PF?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! I have the impression, that when I run in more cushioned shoes for longer periods, without using more minimal from time to time, my PF tends to flair up again. I make sure to rotate my shoes to always include minimal shoes as well. So yes, the Tempos are very cushioned, and I'd recommend to strengthen your feet with lower stacked shoes as well. At least, that's my own experience.

      @@TDMiller Despite being an Altra guy for several years (Escalantes and Torin), I've been in a street fight with PF over last 6 months and had similar experience with cushioned shoes exacerbating the problem. I ended up buying the cushy Asics Nimbus thinking that giant heel would help my PF pain. It did the opposite making the problem 3x as bad. Not sure if its the high drop and/or the massive pillow in the heel, but I got rid of them quickly. I am back to my Altras - odd thing is that the old 2.5 Escalantes give me the least PF pain, maybe because of the lower stack height. I just know that higher drop cushy shoes are not the answer for me. I'm going to try the Tempos and Rivera. Maybe the snugger fit and rocker will help somewhat.

    J'ai les pieds larges, donc, par pour moi, en plus le prix....J'ai beaucoup aimé les Saucony Endorphin Pro et j'en ai racheté une paire, même si le fit est un peu étroit, c'est soutenable. J'essaierai surement des Hoka carbon, car polyvalentes et de bonne construction et cette marque me rassure pour mes articulations

    Hi TD and all owners of this shoe. I like these sneakers and I want to try them. But I don't really like the light color because it shows the dirt very well. Please tell me how easily they get dirty and they easy to clean?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, mine got dirty pretty quickly. But I must admit, that I'm not very careful with them, so I also run in the rain in them. They look pretty bad, and I've tried cleaning them with high quality sneaker cleaner, but didn't get them back as new.

      It's not a sneaker, it's a shoe with a clearly defined purpose, so the looks don't matter at all.

    Hi, I have a torin 5 and escalante 3, both size 10, bought the rivera 2 size 10,5 following your advice half size up, fits Perfect, not because the width, it was fine, but if I had bought size 10 the lenght will be much shorter than the other 2 I have. The lenght of the TEMPO is the same of the Torin 5/escalante 3 or it is shorter as the rivera 2? thanks

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! In my opinion, the Vanish Tempo is sized more like the Rivera 2. So if you sized up for the Riv2, I'd recommend doing the same for the VT. 👍

    Hi,
    I tried on the Escalante size 10.5 & thought it was ok for short runs. For long runs, I probably would go for 11.
    For other brands I wear 10.5 (Nike Invincible, New Balance More v3).
    What size do you think I should order for the Vanish Tempo please?
    Thanks

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you can wear the same size as the Escalante. 👍 They Vanish is slightly more narrow and tapered, but not that much that you'd need to size up.

    Do the vanish carbons feel any faster than the tempos?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be honest, for the pace that I run, it's hardly noticeably, if at all. The plate might give a placebo effect, but it's the weight I think that let's me be a bit faster, or at least, keep a constant pace over a longer distance.

    • @GTE_Channel
      @GTE_Channel ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried both yesterday. I would not say the Carbon felt really faster if anything they felt a little bit more unstable. For me the Tempo was a better fit and ride, so went with those.

    • @Dan_South
      @Dan_South ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GTE_Channel thanks! I've actually heard from 2 sources that it's really the foam that gives energy return. The plate seems to be a stabilizing element more than anything.

    • @GTE_Channel
      @GTE_Channel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dan_South I'm far from an expert on this matter, the tricky parts of trying these out in a shop is that you cant really detect small benefits in efficiency because you dont run long enough and hard enough.
      I would think the benefit lies in more efficient energy return so you get les tired at the same pace on long distances. This could translate to more speed with the same effort.
      The downside is your foot muscles are working less hard and, for me, that's the opposite of what wearing Altras is about. Maybe I'll buy a pair in the future when I do my first marathon but for now my actual running times are not as important, the durability of the carbon' sole is also questionable so the price per mail is way up compared to the Tempo
      I use these to complement my Escslante racers, which I can highly recommend especially for speed work up to 10k.

      @@Dan_South This is probably because the Vanish Carbon shoes do not have full length carbon plate like the other brands. I could also speculate that full length carbon shoes work better for heel striking.
