    I wonder how many people have spent $$$$s replacing the VANOS solenoids but never checking these... probably a lot! Makes me wonder if you even need to change the solenoids either... Maybe just remove and clean them like this and keep the engine oil good and clean, should avoid all the expensive VANOS issues BMW engines are so famous/infamous for! This video could save people a lot of money on unnecessary parts! Very well done for showing us this tip 👌

    Brooooo. You saved me thousands, the repair shop quoted me on some bullshit replacement.... these are the things ive done my self trying to solve the misfires, i replaced ignition coils,vanos solenoid,crank shaft sensor,new oil, new sparkplug, i even got the valve cover gasket replaced... and it sat there for 4 years... finally after watching this i did it my self this morning.. removing the front right wheel and removing the wheel well makes it a easier task! The bottom one had some particles, but the top nonreturn valve was filthy!!! I cant thank you enough!!!

    Rough idle can be caused by blocked engine crankcase breathers. The breather filters are built into the valve cover which will need to be renewed if this is the problem. When the engine is running remove the oil filler cap and remove it, if the cap is hard to remove or you hear any 'sucking' noise as you remove it then you have a breather problem.

  • @GPTSkills

    Thanks for covering this. My rough idle is not as severe as yours and does it momentarily on cold start ups. I already replaced my valve cover assembly, eccentric shaft sensor, ignition coils, spark plugs, vanos solenoids, cleaned MAF sensor, and changed oil to 5w30 instead of 5w40. I will be ordering new non return valves to replace them, regardless if they turn out to be clogged or not.
    Update: I replaced my non return valves today. I noticed both the motor and trans. were more smooth, so far. I only get the rough idle after leaving my car alone overnight, so I am gonna have to wait and check how the idle will be the next day after a cold start.

    If rough idle it's correlated with smoke when you floor it, check the O2 sensors, this was the culprit on my N52. Changed everything, vanos solenoids, coils, spark plugs, etc. Problem was Bank 1 pre-cat O2 sensor, NO check engine and NO fault codes...

    Saved a lot also on doing my own starter, that went out again. First time paid over 1200 bucks at a dealership. This time paid less than 200 for the part. Gained valuable knowledge about this car. Also did the coils, sparkplugs, cleaned the various filters and sensors and whola, runs like new.

      I tried everything I could without knowing about these filters. To be fair a bmw main dealer and two independent "specialists" didn't mention these either. One independent adjusted the gap on the finger between the motor and valvetronic cams and it cleared up a lot but was never as silky smooth as when I first got it. It was running like a swish watch one minute, I overtook a lorry on a dual carriageway, then pulled back in and I noticed the hesitation and fluffy Ness on idle and part throttle. Baffling.
      It was absolutely mint with leather interior and the fancy stereo in it (forgot the name)
      I had to sell it quick due to having a company car, I sold it to a chav family from liecster who after about two months wrote it off.

    My 2007 x3 also chugs but has a really loud high pitcged squeal and does it all the time. Everything i found on it is that i need to replace the pcv vavle... which just so happens to supposedly be molded to the valve cover.. atleast from what ive been able to find out about it.. its creating a ton of suction and if i take oil fill cap off it stops squealing but will still chug just not as bad.. took it to bmw dealership and they said my valve cover is cracked.. didnt say where just that it would cost 2500 dollars.. there is no oil leaking tho. Which my dad a mechanic of u.s. domestic vehicle of 20+ yrs says there would be oil leaking out of a crack if there was one... there is some sensor on the top front of my engine that has had caulk rubbed all over the case and there was a bit of oil in the plug part of same sensor.. cant find what the sensor is to replace it tho.. for all i know that could be the thing i need to fix..

    To really clean vanos solenoids you have to disassemble them (which is easy), otherwise there's no way you get to the dirt that is the piston in the rear side.

    • @spazmochad
      @spazmochad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexandert4252 Fair, thanks for replying. I doubt many people take the time to open them up as the general consensus is that cleaning them doesn't help. I will keep it in mind that it's possible though when I look into my cold start idle fluctuations.

    • @alexandert4252
      @alexandert4252 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spazmochad Basically you just bend two metal pieces that hold electromagnetic part inside and whole thing comes out. It then becomes pretty obvious there's just too few parts for something to really break - electromagnet and a piston. But even with my clean motor i noticed some goo buildup that could prevent piston from moving all the way in the future which is most likely the cause of it all. And since i did "clean" it without disassembly first and it didn't go away proves why people think cleaning doesn't help - without disassembly it clearly doesnt. And don't forget to clean (or better replace they're cheap) 2 small vanos filters - those can cause a lot of troubles if clogged
