Yes--Black-eyed Susans and other types of Rudbeckia work great under walnuts. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for this topic. I have a large black walnut in my small back garden. I wanted to plant some sprinter boxwoods around a paved circle. Then I panicked and thought they will die. You are the only person who has said box woods will survive. I do have some a few yards away and they are ok. I am going to give it a go. Thanks again, I have found more bushes I can plant.
Btw I have lilacs everywhere on my property and they grow and flower no problem.

We're so glad you found this video helpful! We find that gardening near black walnuts can be a bit challenging, but there's definitely lots of options that work.

Did you end up planting the box woods and how did they turn out? I planted some winter gem as semi formal border of my kitchen garden which is within 50 ft. of my walnut and the 5 closest to the tree all started to decline a month after planting. I had read they should be tolerant before I purchased.

@@laurawilson3708 I have 3 Chicagoland Green boxwoods in my circle of 8 walnuts that have been there for 4 years and doing great. I have 3 Mont Bruno boxwoods on the other end of my circle of 8 walnuts that have been there for 3 years and are also healthy. And I have 3 Green Velvet boxwoods under one large walnut tree's canopy and they've been there for 8 years and are full size at this point, all green and healthy.
If yours are dying out, I wonder if it's root competition from the walnut tree. I had to keep mine watered every 3 days for the first three years (I'm still watering the Mont Bruno more regularly than the others since they're still technically new) because otherwise they started wilting at the tips. Boxwoods are drought tolerant, but only once they get established. Walnuts are native to river valleys and love moisture, so they suck a lot of water out of the soil.

Thank you very much for this video. Truly helpful both with information and your delivery. Your personal experience is awesome. Especially the added content re: deer and rabbits. There is so much misinformed out there about juglone and too many times I’ve been told ‘nothing will grow’ which obviously is incorrect. I have 3 large walnuts in my back garden so always looking for more information. Thank you!!!!

Thanks so much for watching, and you're absolutely right--there are so many plants that grow just fine around black walnuts. We have yet to find a satisfactory list of juglone-tolerant plants, so we keep doing a lot of trial and error in our own yards.

Here's what has worked for me:
My tree is 80+ feet tall and I have half an acre. There are 6 other trees on the surrounding properties)
Directly under the canopy, part shade:
    Chicago lustre viburnum Viburnum Opulus
Gooseberries (grows in shade and decorative if pruned properly),
    Basic Ferns
Right outside of the dripline, full sun, west side of house:
    Ninebark Diabolo
Ninebark Ginger Wine (an amazing shrub )
20-30 ft. from dripline 4-6 hrs afternoon sun:
Panicle Hydrangea ( if far enough away)
    Elderberry
    Oso easy Rose
    Rugosa rose
    Blue Kazoo double play spirea
    Snow Storm Spirea (discontinued)
    Goldmound spirea
    Lonicera (the native shrub)
    Lonicera (the invasive one)
On the perimeter, south side of property, farthest away from tree, but still gets some nut litter from squirrels :
    (2)100 year old Lilac trees
Pin cherry ( If you cut them to the ground every 3-5 years, they will grow as a multi-stemed openish shrub, I've done them both ways),
Cheyenne Privet ( dappled shade all day, the dryest of land) , Euonymous (the invasive one), Nannyberry (slow grower)
Wild grapevine grown on a fence and elsewhere as a groundcover (wonderfully aggressive, multi- stemed, grows at least 40 ft/yr. and I cut it to the ground every spring)
    Forsythia Northern Gold?
    Sem False Spirea
    Regular False Spirea
Anecdotally, they will grow right under the tree, as well.

I am SO excited to see that more than half my wishlist of fragrant shrubs will work under our walnut (whether the walnut stays or goes). Thank you for this video. It's been super helpful.
