Are you planning to make ship breakdowns on the other ship classes present at the Battle? I'm kind of curious about the Matthew Cormier myself because while I can't make out what her ship type is, I'm guessing based on the fact that she's the first of her class and currently in a training squadron that she is a fairly new class. Though she isn't returning fire during the stern case, is she unarmed? If she is unarmed why did Sevilgard bring her along for his attempt rendezvous with CVS Sapphire instead of just leaving her at Fort Allencourt?
@@gerhardvancoppenhagen3608I agree that there should be more ship breakdowns. I like it how the ships of the Sojourn use physics like the Expanse, but design their ships like they were created with the mindsets before WW2. These ships, the ones that have breakdowns, are inspiration for a Star Blazers retelling I'm working on.
@@gerhardvancoppenhagen3608She does have weapons. My guess as to why she didn’t fire is because this is an abstract depiction of the battle. Maybe she did return fire and it just wasn’t shown.
@@youtubepleb Yeah I know that's the likely explanation. But it's fun to speculate on things.
Is the Sojourn not available in India? I can only listen to volume 1 on audible.
20 minute animated segment F*CK YES
12:55 Sandblasting a minefield is such a creative idea I love it.
I have more questions to whomever thought a minefield in space was a good idea - instead of building more turret/missile platforms.
@@shaftoe195 What's cheaper? A bunch of unmanned mines that can be set up and forgotten or numerous manned weapons platformed that have to be regularly resupplied.
Also consider the enemy they're expecting. Those defenses are meant to deter pirates, not a full on assault from an enemy fleet.
@@instantimagination8163 No offense, but what I just read from you feels a lot like nonsensical excuses for a poor plot device.
the video shows the mines like 2d objects on a flat plane, which is wierd because in space the ships could just fly above the mines? idk
@@qwezil9476Most likely just an abstract representation for video purposes.
There's a poetic beauty that Unioners use the (Literal) dirt cheap sand from Maiala's Rest to overcome Assembly defense systems. It's not only in character to their doctrine, but I can see them seeing it as a kind of symbolic revenge.
You left us to die in the wasteland of the cluster. We'll show you what the wasteland can send back at you.
love the corvette design
Will you buy the second Spacedock Reference Book? I have the first one. I'm a little disappointed that the second book is about frigates. I am looking forward to corvettes and cruisers.
Sevilgard: DON'T WE HAVE SHIELDS OR SOMETHING?!
Hawker: This is not Star Trek.
Hawker would have said: "This is not Star Trek, *Sir."*
@@shaftoe195 Dangit! You're right!
"We're not equipped with shields? Well better buckle up!"
This feels so much like a historical look at events I love it
"Sevilguard was an idiot". - Give this man a medal.
I like Commodore Hadleigh, its nice when someone in the brass is willing to cut past the politics when there is need.
Huge Expanse vibes from the intro!!! That is a good thing!!!!!!!!!!
AWESOME!
Loved how every character has their pros and cons, it's just that Hawker's matched the situation best. Even Sevilgard eventually listened the first time Hawker broke protocol, even if he didn't later.
Hadleigh is a delight.
This show was created in the spirit of the Expanse but is unique enough not to be considered a rip-off. I'm impressed. I found it on Nebula. That was a pleasant surprise.
my god that Sevilgarde fellow was an absolutely useless tool its a shame he had to take Lyrion Point's crew down with him.... was a relief to see the debriefing acknowledge this as well as endorsing the decision to withdraw
Certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed. More like just a tool, probably asking for directions to the shed, too...
@@shaftoe195 tools serve a purpose, so I would not dare risk giving them offence by likening Sevilgarde to them.
However, I would say he is perhaps a little less sharp than a half-inflated beach ball, and I would surmise his IQ and shoe size are within the same ballpark.
The REAL strength of line formation is simple: Even as the ships of the line sailed straight, they bobbed up and down.
Therefore, the real line of battle is not a straight line or even a sine wave. But is is fact every ship fully using a dimension to dodge, as well as a second dimension for the same so long as its doesn't block line of fire for other ships.
This, is why, in peace time, it should be a straight line. But during exercises when extra fuel and propellant allowed, it should be a sine wave. Or cosine if that is your thing.
The line of battle is never straight. When you can dodge up and down, it is very obvious why you don't put ships in vertical sheets. You will get in the way of others who might want to dodge.
So yes. In space. The line of battle is still important. Add up and down thrusters to your ships that are stronger than the port-starboard thrusters. At the cost of efficiency, as those up/down thrusters need to be treated as rapid response emergency thrusters to dodge incoming shots picked up by the sensors.
In the Age of Water. We sail in lines.
In the Age of Astra, we STILL sail in lines.
Disclaimer, this statement applies to ships of the line. Smaller vessels that modify their doctrine have to still modify their own around this doctrine.
The line itself is a chaotic wave-line in battle. Those who play point defense have to play their own game of dodging and weaving....
To put it simply, I just took the inspiration of lines of battle on a sea with waves on it... and said:
"The traditional ships of the line bobbed up and down too. This in space is an evasion maneauver that needs room. So no fleet sheets."
From there is just fleshes out.
Absolutely gorgeous, i love how pieces of acting were mixed with narrated exposition just like in a documentary.
I wish i was able to do my own stories' world building like this, with this level of precision and dedication, i deeply admire how Daniel and the whole team committed to this effort.
Love the smaller CDF vessel designs and the fact that some officers in the CDF are willing to admit there are idiots in their ranks. It is always a problem with a Peace Time Navy that officer will be promoted for their connections rather thank their skill and knowledge. Those good officers are only ever promoted when the latter are caught with their trousers down. Love the story and the animated battle description and would love to see more. Fare Winds.
Holy cow, i would watch hours of this. So guud. I really liked the dialog at the end. It felt very professional and world building to me. Keep up the marvelous work.
Chandra? Like Lt. Chandra from C&C Tiberium Sun?
The amount of technical detail-from astronavigation to reporting protocol/communications here is stunning!
World building is superb-this feels like a real world where everything has history and backstories.
I love the look of ships in this universe: the stunningly detailed models reminiscent of the Expanse, but with less asymmetry so everything here looks more organized and militaristic.
I really admire your stories military professionalism and discipline. Certain… franchises have fallen into a trend of having people who work on spacecraft behave like emotional teenagers, emotionally melting down frequently and disobeying any order they disagree with whilst suffering no consequence.
I’m strangely intrigued by the space station Fort Allencourt and Farbridge- both in their unique designs and histories- It’d be great if an official breakdown was done on the station.
I like how the voice actor playing Sevilgard sounds like he’s constantly winded-I get the image in my mind of a morbidly obese aristocrat barely wedging his corpulent form into a command chair and struggling to keep breathing over his lethal cholesterol.
I like the names of the vessels in this: CDF ships have romantic names whilst the union ships have more diverse names demonstrating how large and varied the participants of this war are.
The battle itself was engaging: tactics, battle and severe consequence over more ‘hollywood’ style of space battle.
I was surprised and amused at the mine field being eliminated by sand! If this was Star Trek the minefield would be neutralized by a ‘coherent Graviton beam’ or other technobabble. Though I am skeptical to how a minefield would work in space due to range issues and the possibility of the enemy simply shooting them at a distance. Unless they are stealth rigged or something.
Overall, love this and would like to see much more!
What a treat this was. Would very much love to see similar content in the future, keep up the good work! Also forgive me if I’m wrong but the CSV Matthew Cormer has a striking resemblance to a certain legitimate salvage 😉
Yeah also I didn’t recognize is ship class abbreviation, BRG I think it was.
@@chuckbuck5002I believe it’s a brig
@@BlandSpagetti Matthew Cormier-class Brig, yes
Damn, that is one consistent design-philosophy, I like it!
This is really cool. I have been wanting some kind of thing on battles in the frontier war but this is extraordinary.
I love the uniform design
The corvettes look amazing. i love the simple design yet amazing
Why aren't you more famous. Quality of this is amazing. It reminds me of Venom Geek Media Battlespace series, but quality is beyond the roof. And his is more of documential films, and this looks more like a show.❤
The warriors understanding of "I am being led by a total idiot."
This is fantastic quality.
Reminds me a lot of the Patrick O'Brian books.
Wow, that was amazingly awesome!
I am looking forward to a continuation of this series!
Fair Winds!
The pilots in battle should be thankful the battle took place by a space station and not over the planet of Servais major itself. Considering how common Hydro sulfuric acid is on that world, i shudder to think of th fate of any unlicky soul who would have crashed landed on its surface.
Soo we can hope for a youtube drama series coming soon? Great work by the way. Love the characters and really hoping of a animated series.
Probably not TH-cam doesn't provide enough revenue for them to put it for free here
I really hope that this series doesn't fall to the trap of making every other character utterly useless and incompotent in order to make Hawker look better
there will probly be some imcompetence in the high ranking officer and admirals
Yeah that annoyed me immensely
Nevermind that was part of the setting and how the CDF has become complacent
That would get old. It wouldn't take MANY bad or simply inexperienced captains to cause problems.
What is a good number of bad officers?
Really wishing that The Sojourn would have an animated series, all animation work on every video is wonderful
I want a ship breakdown of THE Arashi-Sakara as soon as possible pleaase, I want- ney, NEED to know what is considerded a dreadnought in Tantalus
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I'm going to watch this again so I understand the engagement better. Nice work in general.
I think the Commodore is being a bit harshly judged in the end. Yeah, he made bad mistakes. He didn't stick to them and he bravely tried to fix the mess he found himself in. That said, yes, I can understand why he felt the way he did. It was a horrible loss for a mistake.
He seemed very stressed throughout the whole thing.
@@youtubepleb
I don't blame him. Having what ammounts to a field trip attacked and potentially wiped out is very stressful.
The commanding officer of an entire battle group deciding he doesn’t need to monitor communications at all even if it was a training mission is just beyond incompetence.
@@chuckbuck5002
It wasn't a battle group. It was an exercise.
I disagree. He sortied his forces out of a defended perimeter against a superior foe, refused to hear any advice, and when the engagement started he completely lost his sh*t and disorganized his forces. The shot that took out his quarterdeck did more good than harm.
If he'd held at the fort, that would have changed the math drastically.
Awesome. Can’t wait for more.
just simply AWESOME
This really flipping cool.
Please keep it up.
YESSSSS!'
YOOOO LET'S GOOO it's finally out! Great work!

The first story from The Sojourn I had listened to. Very enjoyable.
THIS WAS SO FUCKING GOOD!
damn really great representaion of that battle.
This was, pardon my French, *FUCKING EXCELLENT.* Thank you for this auditory masterpiece and visual accompaniment. It made my night. @TheSojournHQ
As someone who likes CS Forester books I love the age of sail traditions these space ships use!
I am the very model of a modem major general.
This show is phenomenal.
I suggest you to make this audio drama franchise animated by a Japanese team just like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners so that we could see another Legend of Galaxy Heros
I'm not familiar with this fictional universe, could someone please explain it to me. It looks really interesting.
The setting is a stellar cluster called the Tantalus Cluster, at the time of the main story inhabited by three main polities; the Merician Freehold, the Frontier Union, and the Centrum Assembly.
This video takes place during the opening shots of the Frontier War, which saw the Frontier Union, fed up with a perceived lack of support for the outlying worlds from the central government, declare independence and attack targets within Centrum systems. The war would last ten years and consume so much resources that it created a cluster-wide famine that threatens the whole of civilization. The main storyline involves a long range expedition comprising of ships from all three states to a nearby nebula in a desperate search for new food sources. Near the end of the video here you hear a mention of an Admiral Farren, he’s the father of the captain of one of those ships, a privateering ship named Guinevere whose crew are the main characters of the story.
It’s a great story to listen to, would definitely give it a recommendation
@@startrekker4596 Thanks for the explanation, VERY much appreciated!
@@blockmasterscottif you are interested the audio drama is aviable on distributors like Apple Books, audible etc. I really enjoyed the series so yeah.
This is giving huge "Honor Harrington" vibes. And I like it.

yeah the crew sure is gonna be sore after that lol
They have G-damping systems, but yeah, that’s not gotta be fun.

Marvelous
this would make an amazing game
"dude, this shit's so cool" - me
I'm waiting for season 2
boost the alogrithm!!!
That whistle is giving me bad memories
So, I'm about 5 minutes in and the comparisons to Honor Harrington are hard to silence in my head.
Just once I'd like the hero/ine for one of these space operas to be German, French, Italian, or Japanese using their naval traditions as a cultural baseline. Or having the 'idiot fat commodore' be female... just something to break up the tropes.
None of this means I'm disappointed or annoyed by choices the author made here. They've done a good job, an **excellent** job; I'm just giving my stream-of-consciousness first impressions. As it stands, I'm probably gonna end up buying the series. We'll see how much I like the some of these clips.
Knowing the people who make this, the Honor Harrington comparisons are likely intentional.
We getting more of these? anytime soon? like... now?
YEEEEES
How much money do I need to give you to get a 12 episode series of this? Cause wow call amazon this was dope.
Scratching my head, why the Union ships did not move over or below the minefield? They wouldn't need to breach them.
Because it’s an abstract depiction. The minefield was likely 3D and just displayed as 2D for simplicity.
Lt. Cmdr. Trevelyan? If that's a Halo reference I'm really happy
We need season 2 to be animated

Wait, at the end, it says that the Combined Fleet has Freewarden Lemaire as well as Fleet Leader Tandil. Is Lemaire actually aboard the fleet, and if so, why is he not in a joint command with Tandil (given he's a Union Councillor)?
*She* is. As the video says, it’s a jointly lead fleet.
@@youtubepleb I missed the bit where it says the joint command at first.
On the other note, The Sojourn Wiki says Lemaire's a man.

…nevermind it turns out that I *am* wrong. Serves me right for not checking my notes, I guess.
We are not worthy!!!
East?! 17:49
Towards Union space.
So the ship of the line, even the second rate still couldn’t defend itself against the coil gun strike? I mean, if that’s the case then why haven’t all ships just try to take out each other’s bridges with a well placed shot? There’s no air or gravity in space so aiming shouldn’t be difficult. Or I don’t know, can’t they just put like a meter or even ten or twenty meters thick armor around ship’s bridge?
It was a lucky shot. The Lyrion Point was still facing toward the enemy, leaving her bow exposed which is something no CDF captain wants to happen.
Also, she’s a third-rate.
@@youtubeplebOops, I forgot that she’s a third rate Haha but still, can’t the ship command position has any sort of protection against railgun or coil gun rounds? The real life battleship do have a very thick conning tower just saying.
@@thinaphonpetsiri9907It does. It was a lucky shot.
@@thinaphonpetsiri9907I realise that just saying ‘it was a lucky shot’ isn’t very informative, so I’ll explain:
The Irrio-Kenja was still accelerating when she fired the shot. The Lyrion Point also, while decelerating, yes, was still moving toward the incoming projectile, it was that combination that likely gave the round the momentum to pierce her secondary armour.
Whats more concerning is that the ship doesnt have a secondary command position that would be fully manned at action stations. Even our modern day sea-going warships have secondary and even tertiary command positions onboard.
I like the design of CDF ships more but Union have better ship names. Long live the Miss Conduct and the Peckish Porcupine!
Oooof VA quality is really all over the place in this one.
If I may sir, if I may ma'am, if I may speak to manager actual.
They really gave up a fortified position that could have been used as a staging point to sally out. I feel like this was a critical mistake on every level, only permitted to make the main character look good on paper.
Would have made more sense if she had held out a system against an overwhelming force from a fortified position
I felt the stuck-up commanding officer kind of tropey and lazy writing. Still great content ofc but a bit disappointing in that one respect.
They were outnumbered. Their enemy had just taken out the flagship and the entire command staff. Plus, additional Union reinforcements were a lot closer to the system than CDF ones. It would have been suicide to hold out. What Hawker did was preserve CDF ships that could very well be crucial in the war to follow.
@@Grummar these kind of stupid mistakes happen in history all the time.
@@EGRJ Yeah, fair nuff, and they did explain it with the context of the officer core being filled with prestige positions.
@@Grummar Which also happened in history a lot. Naval or Army.
