HOW TO FIND TOP DEAD CENTER ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE. (WITH A BALLOON) (2023)

  • Automotive technician since 1991, I show an easy method for finding TOP DEAD CENTER ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE for #1 cylinder using a screw driver, hose from a compression tester and a BALLOON. Yeeeep a Balloon. its simple and can be done just by taking out the #1 spark plug. These methods work for all 4 stroke engines and will help you find that dreaded TDC on the compression stroke so you can line up your timing belt correctly. I also explain Camshaft Lobe position and why it needs to be off the lifters for compression to take place. KEEP IN MIND you DO NOT need to take the valve covers off to perform this task, I only have them off because I am changing the head gaskets on this vehicle..Another thing also, if your piston rings are bad (not sealing properly) or your valves are not seated and sealed tight you will have low compression and if it is extreme, it will not inflate the balloon. Keep your faith strong in Christ and never ever give up! Excuse me for calling the Crankshaft pulley bolt a Nut lol, I blame it on my A.D.D. lol

Nice! Never saw the balloon trick before, great video. I this whistle thing my old auto shop teacher made from an old compression tester fitting with a slot cut into it. You turn the engine and when it whistles, your on compression! The balloon idea is new to me though. Very cool.

I can watch 3 other videos totaling 45 minutes and still not have the answers I was looking for, or i watch your videos and have an answer in a matter of minutes, this video alone gave me the help I needed in under 7 minutes, thank you! Keep up your great work, your videos are helpful, and very much appreciated

This is really a good idea. I made my own variation on this. I broke out the ceramic center of an old spark plug, then shoved a piece of heater hose on it and screwed it into the spark plug hole. Worked like a charm! Thanks oldskool!

@@fidenciolucianoflores7814 I put the spark plug in my bench vise and just started breaking it with vise grips. Once you get it started it falls apart.

Good DIY TDC fix. I had a hard time finding the compression stroke by myself, I had to turn the engine until the rotor was looking at #1 sparkplug and the screwdriver was on the top of it's travel. Your balloon is another point and an excellent visual aid.. Thanks for taking the time to share..

***** Faith is an ideology, and can be classified as "not real", unfortunately the bible isnt the only record of a man named jesus christ, see the romans documented him.....including the famous trail of jesus in rome, where he was sentenced to execution......if you trust the romans accounts of wars, astrology, geology, math, and accounts that the roman government said happened in general, then theres no reason to say they're official government records would be a lie about that 1 matter lol. Especially since they didnt believe in a single god, neither did the other people or places that documented him outside of the bible, nor did anyone like what he had to say, so giving this person credit for existing, would mean him being there was not beneficial to any civilizations he traveled to. Would you take the time to write a full on hate blog about a made up person ? Hes classified as a heretic, not the easter bunny.
whether or not he was the son of god is the question. No historian on this earth would ever say jesus christ did not exist, the bible itself also talks a lot about wars and geology.......spoiler alert.......those things happened and existed also by the account of the civilizations involved.....outside of the bible.....
I love 2015 lol, goodbye history, farming, and the passing of time tested information, hello computers and assumptions based on assumptions, keep the ball rolling is the name of the game.

So compression stroke is TDC all the time or does it make a difference on exhaust or intake... Im confused.
I rebuilt my 6.0 engine and I'm having a crank no start and Im not sure if the timing is correct as far as if I had tightened my rockers on compression stroke. Though my piston was at TDC I don't know if it was on the compression stroke.... Just need to verify because I'm nit sure if the exhaust or intake valves are supposed to be open or closed on compression stroke... Please help.

I have a hose with a fitting from a leak down tester but the hose is bent slightly and this throws is out of alignment when I try to screw it into the deep set plug hole. Where can I easily find a hose with the 14mm x 1.25mm fitting?
Also, my spark plugs go in at an angle so I am afraid to use the screwdriver method for fear of jamming the piston and damaging the spark plug hole threads or scraping carbon pieces off it that could get in the rings and cylinder wall.
Valve covers are on since I am only wanting to use a thread chaser before installing new plugs and want to be sure the chaser doesn't hit an open valve or the piston.
Great demonstration though and I will use the balloon method if I can get something with a spark plug thread on it with hose attached.
    Thanks!

That's a cool vid bro. Never thought of that. Been trying to come up with some way to assist myself without any help around to find TDC on my 91 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L. Was changing distributors and think I was off a tooth but now I know I am way off. Have the No.1 spark plug out but there is no notch on the crank balancer pulley so I wouldn't know exactly when TDC is centered. I am waiting on my TDC Whistle Tool to arrive in the mail to help me by tapping the engine over but I know it would be only approximate. Also learned about a Piston Stop Tool to use but I would have to get underneath the car to turn the crank bolt. Lets just say I wanted to go ahead and use something as a Piston Stop Tool without actually ordering one. What would you slide in there to get the most accurate reading to mark the crank balancer pulley? Don't think I have any wooden dowel pins and how hard will it be to turn the inline six cylinder engine with five plugs and serpentine belt installed? Is there any risk of snapping that bolt off?

  • @65sohc
    @65sohc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I didn't have a balloon so I cut off the finger of a rubber glove and taped it to my compression tester hose. I wasn't able to get a wrench on my crank bolt so I put the manual trans in fifth gear, brake off, and rocked the car back and forth pushing/pulling on the shock tower. This method seemed to be quite accurate as far as determining TDC as the glove responded to the slightest piston movement. I also tried the screwdriver method but I think the balloon is more exact and there is no possibility of damaging anything inside the cylinder.

What did you put on the hose to screw into the motor with the ballon? I get the hose and ballon concept but I'm lost as to what you used to screw it in.

Love your videos man!! I have an issue. I tried doing this balloon test you did because my 93 civic cranks but doesn’t start so I set the timing marks and put the compression hose like you did on spark plug 1 with baloon attached and balloon doesn’t fill up with air but it does suck up air. I turned the engine about 4 times. Please help my friend!!
