💯 LOVED this film. Saw it twice. But, oddly, Terrifier makes me sick-maybe because that’s pure evil and gore for the sake of gore. What kept me going throughout The Substance is I sensed it had a point to its grotesqueness. Fave horror movie of the year for me.
I know what you mean - there are layers of theme and subtext in The Substance. At the end of the year, this might end up on my top 5. Thanks for letting me know what you think.
Gross? Maybe, but the sheer artistic quality of it nullifies that aspect 🤔 an utterly brilliant film, audacious, daring, unafraid, and with a lead performance by Demi Moore that deserves a nod 😉
She proved it to me long ago. This was a BOLD choice for everyone and the commitment is what makes it work. Her face in the shoulder, omg. 🫢🫣😆🤣 - Justin
Easily my favorite film of the year. I'm still a bit torn on if the last 10-15 minutes were absolutely necessary, because the film is just as effective without the very ending, and it really could've had a chance with audiences and the Oscars had it ended before the last title card; but, you know what, I wasn't bored, and I still enjoyed and understood what I was seeing. Maybe a light 10 but a 10 nonetheless.
I think what you're torn about is where the French came out in the French filmmaker and pushed it over the line. I feel like that's a national trait in their movies (generally speaking). They like to ruffle feathers.
@mariomarino1616 - Sure, there's always something bloodier, but I can't remember a recent movie this good, with talent of this calibre in front of and behind the camera, that goes this far. A movie that is not directly sold as a horror film (maybe obliquely) pushing the limits of what an audience will watch. It helps that there are layers of theme and subtext to give it all meaning. But thanks for the comment! 😁 - Justin

Thank you for basically copying the indiewire review from the trailer 🙄
@ I don’t need to copy reviews, I have my own opinions thanks 😴
@@hughgrection5674 which is the same 6 words shown in the trailer lol you’re a mastermind
@ what words in what trailer are you on about? There are limited words in the English vocabulary, they will be re-used at some point.
I rarely go the theater these days but I just had to do it for this one.
That's all you got? 😆 What did you think about it? That's what I want to know. - Justin
@@screenjockeys -- loved it, I was laughing out loud through the last twenty minutes.
Me too! That monster was just too much - I was laughing when I wasn't cringing. 🤣
@@screenjockeys -- Demi Moore gave it a thousand percent. So ironic that it took a movie this absurd to prove that Demi is a very serious actress.

Terrifier 3 will probably top this movie. I'm looking forward to seeing this though.
I'll take that bet. And you should definitely see this. - Justin
Nonsense! Many, many bloodier movies. The Substance is a quality movie. Terrific performances, filming, sound design, etc., all top quality.
