      Another nice thorough review Q101, but I don't see the point in circle me and follow me modes (I like to do the flying when I'm flying) and the max range is 700 metres less than the Bugs 2? What are MJX thinking? 🤔
      p.s. The ants @10:50 reminded me of the movie THEM! 🤣

      Thanks Quadcoperman. I spent a lot of time wathcing many of your videos, enjoying them immensly, before settling on this, I used your link and thanks for the discount code. I'm a mid-level beginner, I had a horrible quad to learn on (good learning experience) no GPS or altitude hold, it finished its last flight being fished out of a river. This is my next one, I'm hoping to prove to myslef that I'm good enough and get enough use out of it to warrant buying an expensive drone, hopfully this will be the ideal one to work towards that step. Thanks for your reviews, espeically the one where your dog escapes and PS, Love the shirt!

    Some older phones, unlike QC 101 said, do have 5G WiFi, as do older tablets. And, battery on the Bugs 2 is also proprietary, you need abit of tinkering to use Bugs3 ones, which I wouldn't rule out here also. Looks like a fine Bug this one!

    Hi Quadcopter 101,
    Thanks for your great reviews.
    Would you recommend this MJX bugs model B5W more than the MJX B2W?
    Which one is more enjoyable in terms of flight? You said this one has the same motors as the bugs b3 so it should be sporty too no? What is the top speed of the B5W? Do you think this one has a better video quality? Would you recommed another quad in this price range? Thanks in advance for your help!🙏

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a 802.11ac WiFi phone, I would recommend this one over the Bugs 2W. It is a more capable drone, with additional features that the B2W does not have such as follow me, circle me, and waypoints. In GPS mode, its speed is comparable to the B2W. Its camera is similar to the B2W, but it has the additional capability of up/down remote tilting of the lens. Finally, its cheaper than the B2W, and I have no understanding why as it is a better drone.

    I am a huge MJX fan, have been since they came out with their helicopters, Now own a Bugs F-49 ( helicopter) A Bugs 2C
    and a modified Bugs 3 with FPV camera and a 4k camera mounted underneath. I want this Bugs 5.
    BUT, I also own a Parrot Bebop, with flight controller, The video stability is MUCH better on my Bebop, The camera can be moved
    vertically and horizonally and the whole
    thing can be bought (used) on Ebay for about $250. If you are semi professional as I am. The Bebop, still a better choice.

    The Bugs App is similar to the X-Hubsan. And the Bugs 5W would be close to the Hubsan H501A. They are both about the same price... but it seems that MJX has a slight edge on quality control and customer service :) I have the Bugs 2C and the Hubsan H501s. Just saying... the Bugs series seems a better build quality with less malfunctions.

    • @minepro1206

      I am going for the H501A with the HT011 controller. It has double flying time, better video fps when you record to sd card and double the range. That rotating camera on the Bugs5 didn't impress me.

    Just some insight for this drone. I know because I live in China and talked to their custom support. The flight height distance is because in china, Drone were regulated to fly below 150m. Any higher would require licence. They restricted their drone for the purpose of a bigger market. Not because of technical limitation.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The holder has a rectangular hole that slides down over the antenna. One side of the hole is slightly larger than the other. So if it doesn't slide down all the way, flip it over and try the other side.

    • @civsully1740

    Nice video thanks! Will the WiFi range be the same as the bugs 2w as in 200m before you lose the live footage on the phone?
    The biggest con for me is these proprietary batteries.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I just flew it for its range test yesterday, video to be released later this week. Although its controller has excellent range (I flew it 600 meters plus), its FPV was only steady out to about 200 meters, then became very choppy. I eventually lost the signal entirely at about 500 meters.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a cheap Android LeEco LeTV X520 with 802.11ac WiFi. As mentioned in the video (and video description), this drone uses 802.11ac 5 Ghz WiFi. Not everyone has a phone with this capability. Before purchasing, it is very important to verify that your phone is capable of using 802.11ac WiFi. You can do such by Googling your phone model's specification to see if it includes 802.11ac in the WiFi specification.

    Good to see they've improved on the camera of the B2W

    • @airpic5253
      @airpic5253 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pixelpeter surprisingly, the video footage does seem better but on reading the specs off the official MJX site, the camera has not changed...

    • @pixelpeter3883
      @pixelpeter3883 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's quite often a difference between what's in the specs and how things perform in real life; the video out of the B2W wasn't all that smooth, while the B5W video that QC101 showed us here is ;-)

    • @airpic5253
      @airpic5253 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still seems to have some lag/pixelation from the on board footage, not as bad as the Bugs 2 but I would have thought that MJX would have at least gone to a camera that was 1080@60fps not the original 30fps, would have been heaps better...

    • @pixelpeter3883
      @pixelpeter3883 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that TH-cam degrades the original video footage quite a bit. For sure 60fps would have been great, but that would certainly also have bumped up the price ;-)

    • @airpic5253
      @airpic5253 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I myself personally would have preferred an upgraded camera rather than follow me and point of interest, what I want from a camera platform is a good camera, pity the extra $$$$ were spent on those options...

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bugs 5 does not have a stabilized camera. To see why a stabilized gimbal is important, you can compare the in flight video quality of the Bugs with the SG906. Here's the 906 Pro th-cam.com/video/M6aBr8J_s8M/w-d-xo.html and the 906 Pro 2 th-cam.com/video/NVzcvzjGYks/w-d-xo.html Which of the three in your opinion produces the best video?

    In your video you orient the bugz5 with the camera down. I did this and had 2 successful flights. When orientating the drone for the 3rd time it would not lock in lights. I tried several times and same results. I went back and read the manual and they instruct to orientate with the camera up. I did this and got my solid lights. Tried to fly and the drone took off into the trees on takeoff.
    Could the original orientation of the drone on the first 2 flights keep it from orientating correctly? Why did you orientate with camera down? Thanks

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      First question, no. Second question, the compass needs to be calibrated in two different planes (horizontal and vertical). I don't think that it really matters nose up or down. Regarding your flight into the trees, the calibration is very sensitive to any nearby metal objects. Make sure that you are clear of all metal when doing the calibration. This could include buried cables and pipes in the location that you are flying. If encountering problems in doing a compass calibration, try moving to a different location (maybe 10 meters) in case there are unknown buried objects where you are doing the calibration. And always do a hover check immediately after takeoff. If you notice any toilet bowling, switch from GPS to manual flight mode (if available) and land immediately to redo the compass calibration.

    • @ericfenchel5893
      @ericfenchel5893 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quadcopter 101
      I did calibrate on both plains. It’s the vertical I’m talking about. All flights were done in the same place, but I’ll try a different location and let you know. It won’t calibrate with the camera down in my original location anymore, only up. I just hope the gyros aren’t permanently mixed up. Thanks for your help

    Looks like the so-called 'gimbal' is not a true gimbal or it's doing a pretty poor job of compensating for the quad's movements. From the onboard video footage, I could see the quad / camera moving all over the place - similar look to a hand held camera. Is it possible to put a proper gimbal and action camera on this quad or would that be too much weight?

    this is question more than a comment. I just lost my bugs 5 the other day, i was flying fine, battery good had 11 sats. strong signal, fresh battery had the drone about 60 to 70 feet above and about 200 feet in front and i was controlling it away from me then all of a sudden it started to descend like a plane would. I went searching for it but couldn't find it. is there a way i could have found it with the controller?

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. But this drone has a "Geo Fence" restriction for just such an emergency. 300 meters is the default maximum distance that it can fly from you before it will stop and fly no further. Open a Google Maps satellite view of your flying area. Then use Google Maps to measure (right click on the map, select "Measure Distance") 300 meters from your takeoff point to the general direction when you last saw it to set a best bet search area.

      I get about 200 to 250 meters. But this uses 802.11ac WiFi to do such. Not all phones have 802.11ac WiFi. Before considering purchasing, first make sure that your phone is indeed capable of 802.11ac WiFi.

    • @Quadcopter101

      No it does not. This is primarily an outdoor drone, and should not be flown with prop guards. Prop guards greatly degrade flight performance, and act like hooks if you accidentally crash into a tree.

      Sounds like you're trying to use the waypoints function. It also sounds like you have the map set too wide. Zoom in on the map by spreading and wide on two fingers over the screen. Zoom in all the way before setting waypoints on the screen.

    I have the H501SS (hi) and would love to have a remotely tiltable camera "mod". But it looks like the MJX 5w has everything the H501 has PLUS a remotely tiltable camera. Video transmission changes from analog 5.8ghz to digital 5ghz (wifi), but feature for feature they are pretty much the same. I would use it with an S7 phone. Question: have you tried with "3D" Bugs-Go mode with a smartphone HMD? I use my S7 with a GearVR HMD and a 5.8ghz UVC RX and the image is wonderful th-cam.com/video/8bmZ6rCBDjE/w-d-xo.html. Can I expect similar from the Bugs Go app using my GearVR HMD? Just wondering if you have any experience along these lines. Thanks!

    I've waiting for this one, I can't wait to see your next review of it. Do you know how many megapixels the camera has? Hopefully more than the two megapixel camera on the BUGS 2W. And does this have EIS to help keep the video stable?

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Still pictures are 2 MP. It's just a 1080p frame grab from the video (1902 x 1080 pixel resolution). And sorry, it doesn't have EIS or a stabilized gimbal. But you can always use a video editing program for do it yourself EIS.

    • @RonaldBrown59
      @RonaldBrown59 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find that when stabilizing 2 MP video using Final Cut it degrades the video quality so much that I usually prefer the jello to the degraded quality of the video. Thanks for letting me know. I always enjoy your reviews.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The specs also say that it has "mechanical gimbal stabilization", but it doesn't (just an up down remote controlled lens). And again, the photos are simply 1080p frame grabs from the video. Here's an example that you can download. files.fm/u/76cyhubv#_

    • @airpic5253
      @airpic5253 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am quite aware of the gimbal only working on the pitch, still better than not but from what I have seen on the specs compared to the Bugs 2w is that the camera is the same, damn shame as I was hoping it was going to be better, at least could have made it 1080 @ 60fps, guess MJX thought that the other changes were going to be the seller for this Bugs 5w, me personally would have preferred an upgraded camera...

    it's beyond me why Hubsan / MJX have NOT offered a quadcopter with a 3axis gimbals with one of these. Think of it, this is $200, lets say with a gimbal they can keep it under 300 -- Spark is 399. It could compete with DJI.

    • @gimpman1357
      @gimpman1357 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Masci Agreed. The issue is that the Chinese worry too much about cost and not enough about value and benefits. They could easily provide a better camera/gimbal for $50.00 and we would eagerly pay $100.00 to $150.00 more. For some reason they think we are poor and will not pay.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      See the above video starting at 5:08. For the horizontal compass turns the lights should be flashing yellow. Switch to vertical compass turns once the lights change to green. The compass calibration is successfully completed once the to Red in the front. If you don't get the red lights, then you need to redo the compass calibration. Do not fly until you get the red lights.

    I dont know about USA, but in Britain 5g is only a cell phone standard, not WiFi. 5g uses 900MHz, 2.4GHz and 23GHz
    The drone, on the other hand, uses 802.11ac which id 5GHz WiFi...

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The G in 5G stands for fifth generation of a technology. There are 5G phone data networks, but that is something entirely different and unrelated. Currently 802.11ac is the fifth generation (5G) of WiFi. The other previous four generations of WiFi technology being 802.11a, b, g, and n. To furtheradd confusion, and entirely by coincidence, fifth generation WiFi also happens to operate on the 5Ghz band.
