Knitting Help - Knitting a Square from the Center

- Knitting shapes is one of the very cool things we get to do with knitting. In this video, I demonstrate knitting a square from the center - a shape that can be used to make any size square, from dishcloth to afghan.
Instructions:
Cast-On 8 stitches using the pinhole CO, divide between 3 or 4 double-pointed needles. Knit around all stitches. (See the pinhole cast-on here: • Knitting Help - Slow M... )
Row 1: KFB (knit front/back) all stitches
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: *KFB, K2, KFB*, repeat around
Row 4: Knit (if you are on 3 needles, separate stitches on to 4 needles here)
Row 5: *KFB, K to last stitch on needle, KFB*, repeat on other 3 needles
Row 6: Knit
Repeat Rows 5 and 6 to desired size, bind-off normally.

The yarn I used for demonstration is Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Chunky.

This is a very interesting technique. I usually default to crochet for center-out squares, but I definitively want to try this some times or another :)

I have lost my patterns for this and as a beginner your video means a lot. I will look to your other videos for hexagonal, octogonal and round shapes with the same technique .I just love making dishcloth that way. For you it is simple but for me it is a big help. Thanks

I have tried this and really like this cast on method.
Great video. Have a pattern(miter) something similar working Afghan with a single diagonal in each square. Knitting as you go connecting the squares, with DK Yarn. Will make a sample, might change the pattern. Thank you🙋🏽♀️

I've been making Bereavement Blankets for 'The Preemie Project'.
I did a Google search for 'inside out' baby blankets, and the only thing I've come up with are colored squares. Can you point us to blankets with DESIGNS instead of colors, since white is the preferred color for these blankets?

If you use a different amount of needles, could you do different shapes? 3 needles to do triangles, 6 to do hexagons etc....
I think the frequency of the increases would have to change. The square works so well because a 45° angle is a 1/1 slope. For a triangle it's 60° which is root 3 over 1 which means you need to increase about 17 times per corner for 10 rounds, but i'd just go with 16 times per 10 so you could go increase 2 three times on the corners and increase 1 for 2 rows corners on repeat.

I use this same cast-on in my newest sock pattern, Star Toed Fleegle...you can use this same CO whenever you're starting with very few stitches on DPNs, knitting from the center out.

Either or. I prefer one circular, starting off on a short (16") then moving on to longer cords as the piece gets bigger.

Cool video. So I'm knew to knitting and just making things up as I go. I've made myself a duster cardigan. I'm REALLY struggling with the sleeves though. To fit the arm hole of 8", the sleeve is too bulky and loose. Do you have any suggestions? I want the sleeves to hug my arms. Thanks for all your videos

The last Shall be first - Thanks. I've kinda figured it out. I'm starting at the sleeve hole and working down. I'm on the 8th or 9th try though. I've always been this way. Heck I taught myself how to dive in the deepened before I learned how to swim😂🤪😂. Thanks for your response. It's appreciated.

How do you calculate how many skeins for this patter for 4"squares in a double bed size or queen?????
This is intriguing ... I was looking for something to use up all my scrap yarns with, like every color imaginable ... just keep stashing out to a huge bed size throw? my only concern is my tendency to create extra stitches or my lesser tendency to drop stitches ... in either case after I find it and repair it, it will make the square look wonky ... I will try to be more vigilant, st st tends to make me go into mindless meditative knitting tempo. This could be fun intermixed with garter but would that warp the shape too much?
Do you knit continental or English? I tend to create extra stitches knitting English style vs continental where I keep the left hand fairly still.
@@chriscode6431 Hmmm no I Love continental and that's really all I know with sometimes experimenting with purling slightly differently to gain speed, but I don't do that often ... Its probably my eyesight, it has changed a bit recently to needing glasses to see close, and I don't always wear them.
Any tips for keeping kfb from making stitches too tight? No matter how loose I try to knit, to still ends up so tight it's hard to knit the next row/round
Just make sure that you're working both loops of the stitch and sliding it up to the fullest part of the needle. Working only on the tips of the needles (for any stitch) will result in tight stitches.
How do you add the neat, tidy, chain stitch to the edge? Do you have a tutorial for it?

how long does it take to knit an 8 inch square for a beginner?
Staci, I remember making a baby blanket from the centre out like this quite a while back. But I can't stand using double pointed needles. I would have used magic loop but now that I'm watching you, I can't picture how I did it that way. My cast one was somehow different too but I really like this cast on you demonstrate. Any way I can do this again using magic loop?
If you prefer magic loop and you're familiar with the technique, you can use magic loop instead of double-pointed needles, no special explanation needed, just plain 'ol magic loop. But really, I think the first few rounds are much easier with DPNs, even if you transfer off DPNs after a few rounds.

Is it possible to use circular needles for this?
You mentioned making a blanket and that was my first thought with this design.. what would you advice to use after there are lot of Stitches to be on the dpn
Yes - you'll have to switch to longer and longer circular needles as the work gets bigger and bigger.
@@verypinkknits I have not tried yet DPN, so can I start it using the magic loop instead?
If you decide to go larger onto circular needles how do you know where to do the kfb since theres no start or end like on dpn?
Just place ring markers on the needle to mark where the pattern repeats (or where the dpns started/ended).

Yes - it's possible. I demonstrate on double-points because I find it much easier to work so few stitches on DPNs.

Only when you are starting at the center of a piece that is going to grow in all directions.
Staci, can I make a rectangle in this fashion by making two of the sides with more increases, would it turn into a rectangle or would it be wonky just on mechanical principle? I don't have the kind of mind to figure such things out. Thanx for your time and talents.
No, not really. Knitting around on a piece means increasing the number of rows evenly on all four sides, which won't result in a rectangle. There are a few different ways to knit a rectangle - this isn't one of them.

You said that the first increase round doesn’t matter what kind of increase we do. When we start increasing between the needles, does it still not matter what kind of increase we use?
You can use any one-stitch increase throughout the piece.

How did you make sure that stockinette st didn't curl?
Using wool yarn and knitting in a looser gauge will keep it from rolling and curling.

Is there a tutorial for how to switch from dpns to circulars?
I don't have a video on that specifically, but I can explain it here. Just put the circular needle in your right hand, and begin knitting from the DPNs to the circulars. Once you make it all the way around, your stitches will be on the circulars.
@@verypinkknits ahhhhhh, ok, thanks, that makes sense. I was trying to think if I'd need two circulars, or one extra long one, or what. Dpns and I are decidedly not friends, lol!
I have a question. When i finished my square my edges will not lay down. Is there a reason why this is happening?
Knitting with a looser tension (using a larger needle size with that yarn) will make a difference. Additionally, using a wool or wool blend yarn allows you to block out the finished square to flat, or steam block it.
@@verypinkknits Thank you. Right now im using all my leftover Red Heart acrylic yarn. I'm also using size 8 DPNS. I think I'll just make the side curls part of the design for my blanket.

The basic idea, yes, but the angles are different.

I know before, you said you were not interested in doing that little baby blanket called “POP”, (it uses this pinhole cast on, and instead of turning the pinhole into squares, it turns them into circles).....please reconsider Stacy, and do a tutorial of this blanket! It’s beautiful but a bit tricky....
