Tony Randall is by far one of my most favourite guests. Love him as an actor and he seems like such a true and dear friend. We should all be so lucky to have a Tony Randall in our lives. He's a joy!
David Hyde Pierce played Tony Randall in Frasier for a decade and more. D.H.P. even got to DO Tony Randall in 'Down With Love' a rather mean spirited spoof of the Doris Day-Rock Hudson movies and he was the only good thing in the movie.
Around 1972, I found myself sitting opposite Jack Benny in the lounge car of an early-Amtrak Broadway Limited: he had diverted to the train for a Chicago-New York trip due to weather delays at O'Hare. I respectfully refrained from pestering one of my comedy idols. That, and he was accompanied by a Really Big Bodyguard.
You wouldn't think Jack Benny needed a big bodyguard. Who in their right mind would need to be physically restrained around Benny? Or have I missed something?
Jack Benny was 72 here, but did not look anywhere close to 70. A marvelous talent, and Johnny Carson's comedic idol. I remember reading the sad news in the newspaper when he died the day after Christmas, 1974, at 80. Jack Benny, birth name Benjamin Kubelsky, 80 (Feb. 14, 1894 - Dec. 26. 1974 Los Angeles, CA).

I think anyone who lived during that era from the 1930's thru 1970's would agree that Jack Benny was an absolute genius at making the every day things in life ( eating food, reading the paper, walking etc;) histarical. He was successful at radio, TV, movies etc; no one was like him. I loved him dearly as did millions of others. I'm smiling as I type this.

And spactick is right: Benny wasn't a stand-up comedian: he did "situational" humor, where a situation or series of events become funny as well as his reactions to the same. He was famous for jokes that built up over multiple shows or even over years once you were familiar with Benny's character and the characters of his supporting cast on his program.

Exactly in 1970 (to 1974) with his wonderful portrayal of the fussbudget, clean-maniacal Felix Ungar, against his roomie Jack Klugman, portraying the opposite personality Oscar Madison.
My son, whose interest is music, and I have been acknowledging how many in the music, theatre, entertainment field are Jewish and the contribution they have made especially to the US. Tonight we have Phyllis Newman, Tony Randall, Bennett, and Jack B. Week after week you will be surprised at how many are on this show. And let's not forget Mark Goodson. Life would have been so much poorer without them. Certainly we would have had fewer laughs.
I fell in love with Jack Benny's voice, coming over the radio in his last days on the radio. I was only three. I have loved his voice ever since. And I think of it every time I hear some hoarse, nasal, screechy radio personality or politician.
I'm glad that there wasn't a challenger rushed on after Vincent Edwards without enough time to question the person properly. I could see that John Daly was filling in the last few minutes by asking Tony Randall about his visit to India and by repeating his quip about public speaking - 'Be brave, be brief and be seated'. Some 'interesting occupations' were wasted in other episodes by bringing challengers on for just the final two or three minutes.
Jack Benny was not only popular in America but was also apparently popular in Britain because British comedian Benny Hill chose Benny as his stage name in tribute to Benny. Hill may have chosen Benny as his stage name but his style of comedy is quite different from that of Benny. In fact, their styles are so different that one can say that they are as different as night and day.
Jack mentioned that he was going to be appearing in Dallas. Ironically, it was after a performance there in October 1974 that he collapsed. After he was taken back to California he learned he had pancreatic cancer. He died December 26, 1974.
I just looked up the name of the other mystery guest, because I'd never heard of him, and it said, he died of pancreatic cancer. That's strange that both mystery guests on the same night died the same way!
A follow up to my last post: The CBS Television City website says that "The Jack Benny Show" came out of Studios 31 and 33. The Production complex was built in 1952 with four soundstages (the other two were 41 and 43); 31 and 33 had a "Theater Pit", but now, only 33 has one. So the special Hollywood episode of WML, came out of either 31 or 33.
Mrs. Burns was from Shelbyville, Tennessee. Another, more famous person, from Shelbyville, Kentucky, appeared on WML in December 1963, and his appearance probably helped make him a national figure. I'm referring to Colonel Sanders. BTW, the panel did not guess that he owned a chain of fried-chicken restaurants.

What's My Line? Hey, I'm from the "current generation" and I can recognize Jack Benny better than I can recognize any of today's celebrities. (My parents raised me on "classic" tv shows and movies -- and tbh that's what I still prefer to watch.) The panel didn't really get a chance to guess his "line." Once they had figured out who he was, shouldn't John have stepped in and said, "Now you still have to tell us what "line" our guest is representing in this game," or something like that? Instead, Jack tells them at 8:14. They might have gotten it right away, but they might not have, and either way, the guessing would likely have brought more laughs. On the other hand, Jack's own explanations were pretty funny anyway. :)

Vince Edwards is in a movie with Joanne Woodward "The Three Faces of Eve." I think it's one of his early movie appearances if I'm wrong please let me know.

Starting at 22:30, Tony Randall and John Daly discuss the Indian film industry. Neither one mentions the word "Bollywood", a blend of "Bombay" and "Hollywood". The origin of the word Bollywood is disputed, according to Wikipedia. The oldest citation for Bollywood in the Oxford English Dictionary comes from 1976. However, the word was used very little before 1990.

By a remarkable coincidence, only last week I was watching a video of Tony Randall in Bombay. Shifting topics, I find it intriguing and amusing that panelists introduce each other as "young", as Phyllis Newman introduces Randall who was about 15+ years older to her, and how Tony has introduced Arlene Francis in previous shows even though she was 12 years older to him. And coincidentally it was the eternal 39 year old Benny on this episode!
4:53 -- apparently at the last minute, the productions staff decided that Benjamin the concert violinist needed ahand-made title card to really identify him.
Even though 1965-66 was the last season for Ben Casey, the show ended on March 21, 1966, and did not run into summer reruns. So as of this show, he was not appearing in a series.

Lo what the Beatles and the other Boy Bands hath wrought. A young handsome-to-pretty guy celebrity walks in and the girls scream all over the place. I'd have to look at the Rick Nelson 1959 WML appearance to see if they did that pre=-Beatles.
I knew Phyllis knew who Jack Benny was when she asked if he was between age 35-40. My father used to say he was 29 and holding until he got close to 50 and then started saying he was 39 and holding. He took that to the grave at age 67 and people didn't believe he was as old as 39
In the period from 1962 to this broadcast, Dorothy, Arlene and Phyllis were the only women to occupy the first seat. If I were Arlene I would be right ticked both in 1963 and 1966 that Phyllis [who had been on WML at most a dozen times] got the first seat . . . . With Arlene’s introduction, yet. Phyllis's undeniable youthfulness and perky-tude notwithstanding to the contrary.
Although Dorothy and Arlene both sat in the first position, I see it more as Dorothy's position. Just as the third position seemed to fit Arlene (right next to Bennett, who shared great chemistry. ) And this is coming from someone who hasn't watched too many post-Dorothy episodes... I wonder if Arlene had a preference...
She cackles incessantly and is far too annoying. I'm so thankful she's not a regular. Every episode she's on, I find myself fast forwarding to escape her.
Believe it or not, as I started to watch this video of my favorite comedian, Jack Benny, and I wanted Jack NOT to be identified 'till the very end at least so I could enjoy his presence all the way, I immediately knew that when it came to Arlene Francis, she was going to identify him right away, for Mr. Benny was not being very good -right from the beginning- at disguising his voice.
This show was one of the last remnants of old-fashioned formality on TV. Not as formal as dinner at the White House or conducting a symphony orchestra, for which "white tie" formal wear including a tail coat would be appropriate. But when this series started in 1950, "black tie" with a dinner jacket (tuxedo) was the rule. Bennett Cerf mentioned in an oral history that soon he and John realized that wearing a black bow tie and a dark suit gave the same effect on TV: more "dressed up" than wearing a long tie. Other Goodson & Todman game shows were less formal: for instance, Garry Moore on "I've Got a Secret" sometimes wore bow ties, sometimes long ties, usually not black, usually with lighter colored suits.
A lot of the reason Cerf's gag's fell flat was in his delivery. Should have left it to the Professionals. Like Jack Benny. He seemed a bit frail tho now.
Their lines of questioning are often very curious,almost as if they can either see who it is or somehow know. Not 100% of the time maybe not even 50% of the times,but ...I mean for example Phyliss Newman, making mention of his age. Even I know that it was a running joke that Benny always said he was 39 and thats what she was driving at.C,mon. Quiz shows were famous for cheating to one degree or another back in the day.LOL, Benny said he could tell that Cerf knew the moment he came on. Yeah. I'm gonna say probably before.
Bennett Cerf knew a lot of celebrities very well, and he had quite an ear for picking out the real voices when they tried to disguise them. And as was alluded to during this show, they often had an idea who the mystery guest was ahead of time knowing who was in New York to promote premieres and live appearances. I don't think they took the game as seriously for these segments and let the questioning continue for a little regardless.
There was the famous one where Steve Allen guessed "Pretzel bender" as the occupation of one contestant. He was wrong. But the following contestant WAS a pretzel bender. He clearly had to have known.
Yes every answer from her sounded misleading (nerves) and then John would use that same odd voice with all those tentative answers. It was quite annoying in a fun way
The whole concept of the first sequence is just too too funny. However -- in both his 1959 and his 1966 WML appearances, Jack Benny slapped John Charles Daly, the only WML mystery guest to do so. And that is not funny, Jack.
I hate how John always goes on about Tilton, and how it's "his school." It's nothing prestigious and it's was constantly changing formats because it was broke and he needed to stop reliving high school.

I had a childhood book like that, with the pages cut into thirds, showing various animals. It was so much fun to see the many combinations.

Interesting to see the panel blindfolded for Jack Benny. They were NOT blindfolded two weeks later, when Steve Allen came on in Game 1.
The panel didn't really get a chance to guess his "line." Once they had figured out who he was, shouldn't John have stepped in and said, "Now you still have to tell us what "line" our guest is representing in this game," or something like that? Instead, Jack tells them at 8:14. They might have gotten it right away, but they might not have, and either way, the guessing would likely have brought more laughs. On the other hand, Jack's own explanations were pretty funny anyway. :)
That's because no one knew Steve Allen sold motorcycles. Everyone knew Jack Benny played the violin.

Vince Edwards is in a movie with Joanne Woodward "The Three Faces of Eve." I think it's one of his early movie appearances if I'm wrong please let me know.
He had actually been in the movies and on TV for about 10 years when he played an Army sergeant (uncredited) in "The Three Faces of Eve" in 1957. His first movie role was an uncredited part in "Dark Passage" in 1947, as a cop in a tollbooth. His next movie role was credited, as Tommy Tomkins in "Mister Universe" in 1951. Other credited movie parts along the way include roles in "Sailor Beware," "Hiawatha," "Rogue Cop," "Cell 2455, Death Row," "The Night Holds Terror," "Serenade," "The Killing," "Hit And Run, "The Hired Gun" - and, after "The Three Faces of Eve" but before he hit it big in BEN CASEY, "Ride Out For Revenge," "Island Women," "Murder By Contract," "City of Fear," "The Scavengers," "Too Late Blues," and "The Outsider."
He also performed on a number of TV drama-anthology shows in the 1950s, including FIRESIDE THEATRE, THE FORD TELEVISION THEATRE, CELEBRITY PLAYHOUSE, THE 20TH CENTURY-FOX HOUR, GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATER, STUDIO 57, and ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS ("The Young One," in 1957).

Not the "Daily News", the "Sunday News". It was for research for that night's program with the famous Coloroto section plus the entertainment section to keep up with what was happening in the city. Besides, the "Times" didn't have comic strips. Where else could you catch up on "Dick Tracy", "Little Orphan Annie", "Brenda Starr, Star Reporter", "Dondi", "Winnie Winkle", "Smilin' Jack", "Moon Mullins", "Smokey Stover", "Gasoline Alley", "Rick O'Shay", "On Stage", "Terry and the Pirates", "Smitty", and comic strips like "Li'l Abner" that came over to the "News" as other NYC papers folded.

For those who don't know, Jack Benny loved to say he was perpetually 39 years old.
Starting at 22:30, Tony Randall and John Daly discuss the Indian film industry. Neither one mentions the word "Bollywood", a blend of "Bombay" and "Hollywood". The origin of the word Bollywood is disputed, according to Wikipedia. The oldest citation for Bollywood in the Oxford English Dictionary comes from 1976. However, the word was used very little before 1990.
SO WHY BRING "BOLLYWOOD" UP IF THE WORD WAS NOT USED BEFORE 1990?
RE: Vincent Edwards: I am not sure what played opposite Steve Lawrence's variety show and "Ben Casey" but whatever it was -- it knocked both of those shows off the air.
It was "Run for Your Life". Both BC and SL were cancelled that year, while RFYL went on to a 3 year run.
And when it went into syndication it became "Re-run for Your Life".
As Vince Edwards walked off stage, the sound of the applause was weird and "wavy" sounding. Defective audio on the tape.

By a remarkable coincidence, only last week I was watching a video of Tony Randall in Bombay. Shifting topics, I find it intriguing and amusing that panelists introduce each other as "young", as Phyllis Newman introduces Randall who was about 15+ years older to her, and how Tony has introduced Arlene Francis in previous shows even though she was 12 years older to him. And coincidentally it was the eternal 39 year old Benny on this episode!

Even though 1965-66 was the last season for Ben Casey, the show ended on March 21, 1966, and did not run into summer reruns. So as of this show, he was not appearing in a series.
"The Avengers" aired in that timeslot (Monday 10 PM ET on ABC); its first run in the U.S. It would continue in various slots until 1969.

My father used to say he was 29 and holding until he got close to 50 and then started saying he was 39 and holding. He took that to the grave at age 67 and people didn't believe he was as old as 39
I think he was 80 when he passed away. He was the master of dead pan humor.
In the period from 1962 to this broadcast, Dorothy, Arlene and Phyllis were the only women to occupy the first seat. If I were Arlene I would be right ticked both in 1963 and 1966 that Phyllis [who had been on WML at most a dozen times] got the first seat . . . . With Arlene’s introduction, yet. Phyllis's undeniable youthfulness and perky-tude notwithstanding to the contrary.
Although Dorothy and Arlene both sat in the first position, I see it more as Dorothy's position. Just as the third position seemed to fit Arlene (right next to Bennett, who shared great chemistry. ) And this is coming from someone who hasn't watched too many post-Dorothy episodes... I wonder if Arlene had a preference...

Believe it or not, as I started to watch this video of my favorite comedian, Jack Benny, and I wanted Jack NOT to be identified 'till the very end at least so I could enjoy his presence all the way, I immediately knew that when it came to Arlene Francis, she was going to identify him right away, for Mr. Benny was not being very good -right from the beginning- at disguising his voice.

This show was one of the last remnants of old-fashioned formality on TV. Not as formal as dinner at the White House or conducting a symphony orchestra, for which "white tie" formal wear including a tail coat would be appropriate. But when this series started in 1950, "black tie" with a dinner jacket (tuxedo) was the rule. Bennett Cerf mentioned in an oral history that soon he and John realized that wearing a black bow tie and a dark suit gave the same effect on TV: more "dressed up" than wearing a long tie. Other Goodson & Todman game shows were less formal: for instance, Garry Moore on "I've Got a Secret" sometimes wore bow ties, sometimes long ties, usually not black, usually with lighter colored suits.
The only time I recall the men wearing straight ties was for the first show following Dorothy's death.
A lot of the reason Cerf's gag's fell flat was in his delivery. Should have left it to the Professionals. Like Jack Benny. He seemed a bit frail tho now.

The horse collar lady was one of the most annoying contestants in the history of WML.
Their lines of questioning are often very curious,almost as if they can either see who it is or somehow know. Not 100% of the time maybe not even 50% of the times,but ...I mean for example Phyliss Newman, making mention of his age. Even I know that it was a running joke that Benny always said he was 39 and thats what she was driving at.C,mon. Quiz shows were famous for cheating to one degree or another back in the day.LOL, Benny said he could tell that Cerf knew the moment he came on. Yeah. I'm gonna say probably before.
On the other hand, Jack Benny received a humongous ovation, as few others would, and I thought he hardly disguised his extremely well known voice.
Bennett Cerf knew a lot of celebrities very well, and he had quite an ear for picking out the real voices when they tried to disguise them. And as was alluded to during this show, they often had an idea who the mystery guest was ahead of time knowing who was in New York to promote premieres and live appearances. I don't think they took the game as seriously for these segments and let the questioning continue for a little regardless.
There was the famous one where Steve Allen guessed "Pretzel bender" as the occupation of one contestant. He was wrong. But the following contestant WAS a pretzel bender. He clearly had to have known.
Arlene was a spoiler.

The whole concept of the first sequence is just too too funny. However -- in both his 1959 and his 1966 WML appearances, Jack Benny slapped John Charles Daly, the only WML mystery guest to do so. And that is not funny, Jack.
