Nice outfits the Supremes wore. I had one like the one Ms. Florence Ballard had on when I was a kid in grammar school. I had the hair style too. My older sister would put curlers in my hair the night before and comb it out. She had all their records. She would mimic Ms Ross when we played house.

She seemed remarkably nervous to me. I don't know much about her career, but I suspect that the height of her popularity was already far behind her when she made this appearance, and she may have been worried that she wouldn't be remembered . I think she was genuinely both touched and grateful for the enthusiastic reaction she received from the studio audience.

SaveThe TPC Right you are. As far as I know she had her biggest success in the 40's and 50's. She was also famous for her eight marriages (among others Artie Shaw and Lex Barker) and that her daughter Cheryl Crane stabbed her mother's lover Johnny Stompanato to death in self-defense after he had violently attacked her mother in 1958.

She was either a hypocrite, a liar, or incredibly naïve. She wrote that when she loved a man she married him, like an old-fashioned girl, but Esther Williams could hear her and Fernando Lamas having sex through her dressing -room wall long before he married Esther. She asked why didn't they get somebody not ugly for 'Postman', her best film, (John Garfield--ugly??). She said Tyrone Power was the love of her life without realizing he was bisexual; she denied being pregnant by Mickey Rooney--maybe at that young age she didn't know? And who knows really what happened that night with Stompanato--did Cheryl take the rap?

@@rogerpropes7129 Since when does sex=love? Yea Lana Turner had sex with Lamas, but that doesn't mean she was in love with him and wanted to marry him. She wasn't pregnant with Mickey's child and denied any relationship with him (and looking at her future relationships, Mickey wasn't her type anyways - and Mickey confessed to fabricating many details in his memoir to sell books). It's not her place to call out Tyrone Power's sexuality. And her daughter Cheryl is still confessing to killing Stompanato. And forensic evidence supports her. I read her book and don't remember her calling John Garfield ugly so I can't comment on that one.
I don't know what gripe you have against Lana, but she never said she was perfect.

I think they were trying to make up for what happend on the question before when they asked if dealt in booze. Im not sure the technical def'n of "booze" but it seems booze is a pretty broad term and it seems that responding No was misleading. With that still lingering in the air, Suzy is trying to determine if alcohol is involved so they are trying to steer her that way. It was convoluted and happened a bit on the show.

The "girl group" phenomenon really peaked in 1963 and ebbed by 1964, when The Supremes began their historic run of #1 hits. They were technically a part of the era, but really transcended it, and lasted far beyond its narrow range. Groups like The Shirelles, The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las, et al., were basically off the Top 40 by 1965, while The Supremes had ten #1 hits by 1967, and then as the re-christened Diana Ross & the Supremes, two more in 1968 and 1969, respectively.

In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left to pursue a solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell, so the group's name reverted to The Supremes. During the mid-1970s, the lineup changed with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene joining the group until, after 18 years, The Supremes disbanded in 1977.

Lana got less attractive after 1948's 3 Musketeers, by Imitation of Life, I really didn't think she was pretty though at only 38 years old which was kind of old at that time, 1959.
