You have steps there that are completely unnecessary for removing the fan. Removing the ram, the harddrive, the antenna and lvds cables, and the LCD are unnecessary.

i just want to replace the thermal paste on the cpu, do i really need to tear it to pieces?

You have to be able to remove the heatsink so the motherboard will have to be removed. www.parts-people.com/blog/2014/09/22/dell-latitude-e5440-heatsink-removal-and-installation/

My system report's the cpu fan stopped working. Is this really necessary to replace the fan?

If you're using it with CPU intensive applications or in hot weather then I'd for sure replace. You may be able to get away with not having the fan working but it'll risk shortening the life of your laptop and it overheating and shutting off.

@dellpartspeople I meant this video.... do I REALLY have to remove all this (content in video), just to remove the fan?

Been doing support for years and this is by far the most ridiculous r/r procedure I've seen in a very long time. I have an e5440 with a non-working CPU fan that runs day and night and never overheats even on 102 degree days. After seeing this I'll pop for a $20 cooling pad to stick the machine on if it ever needs it.

This is precisely why I've been running my E5440 for years with a seized CPU fan. It never overheats and the only annoyance is that it interrupts the POST to whine about it. Truly pathetic design.
