while i hate the battery like in the e series with it only seeming to have 1-3 hour batery life depending what you do on it, i admit the e series has made some solid laptops that still function perfectly even after a decade. Must say i might try this, doesnt look too complex. Anything i should know before updating old latitude?

Hello, the critical step before disassembly and installation of the upgrades is to create a bootable USB drive using the Dell OS recovery tool. It is best to use the system and question to create the bootable USB drive because, when you open up the Dell OS recovery tool and type in your service tag you will have the option to create a USB drive for “this computer“. This has the benefit of creating a USB drive with the original operating system that will also include the original drivers.
With the bootable USB in hand you can proceed with the upgrades! Once the upgrades are installed leave the system powered down, insert the USB drive, power on the system, rapidly tap the F 12 key to bring up your one time boot menu, ensure that you are choosing UEFI secure boot if you are using Windows 8.1 or later then, click the USB drive option and installation will begin.
As you will be inserting/installing an unformatted drive you will have to choose the custom option, choose unallocated space, hit next and windows will automatically format it into NTFS. Good luck

They did this so that it would be harder for you to replace the battery on your own computer. They want you to either buy a new computer or send it to them so that they can replace the battery and charge you a premium price for it.

no bro , always use same capacity of ram like 4gb ram, 4gb ram or 8gbram , 8gb ram . in order to avoid any overburdern issues and it is not recommended at all to do things like 2gb,4gb or 4gb,8gb . u should alway use same speed and capacity rams
i have the same laptop...my main ssd is 128...can i install a second ssd of 500gb for extra space on it??? i know i have to remove the DVD Drive and install a cady to support the second one in that slot...but i m not sure whether this particular laptop supports it or not?

E5440 have a NVME M.2 SSD slot, why you don't put a M.2 NVME SSD into it instead of a SATA SSD for faster reading? I'm using an E5440 right now and feel happy with a 1TB NVME SSD.

I have the 5540 which is quite similar to this laptop and I did that upgrade of the Kingston SSD with no problem. Just to confirm that it works great.
there are 2 slots, however they both are different. the one in the middle is the main “SATA” drive that boots. the second one is on the left, where the “Ref. To Man.” is. “mSATA” is used for also booting, and can also be used for storage.
So as I understan , if we put any SSD , I can not use HDD right?
If you have only one slot for hard disc, then yes. But if you have a certain laptop you can install a CD-ROM HDD caddy (you will have extra HDD slot instead of CD-ROM)

No, you can slot a hard drive into the spot where the optical drive is however, you need to get the special proprietary adapter to stick the second hard drive in so that it will properly connect to the motherboard.
