Nailed it right on the head. Brawl is my favourite aswell (it's probably just my nostalgia goggles) but i do truly love all the games in the series even the horribly outdated Smash 64 and Smash 3ds!
I'd argue, that the adventure mode in melee has more in common with the single player mode in the first smash game. In both you fight every character, which doesn't have to be unlocked and there are no random parts.
Poor smash 64 lol. It's the game that was more of a prototype that no one plays anymore or take about but still loved when it came out and started the series...but true Melee is the first modern smash bros, plus it's a GameCube game so of course it's amazing!
64 is still hanging on believe it or not, I mean I still play it and Id consider it my 2nd favorite game right behind Melee. If it ever got a rerelease I can see it blossom into relevancy once again, the only real time it gets a considerable attention nowadays is in the Genesis line up and it does pretty well in viewership.
It's pretty much like Street Fighter 1. Everyone thought it was pretty neat, but then when Street Fighter 2 came out it blew the gaming community out of the water.
We can all agree that the series overall is amazing. I love each and every entry. But like with a things you love, there's always going to be one you prefer the most. And that's okay. I get why people love Melee the most. I also get why people love Brawl the most. There's something for everyone here. Once Ultimate drops here in a few days, I think we'll all be meeting in the middle. I have a feeling that game is going to be everyone's preferred entry.
Brawl was my first smash game and carries the most nostalgia, ultimate is my favorite semi competitive smash (playing my friends with 2 stock no items omega only and actually trying we’re just bad) and melee is the best comp game. I only have 1 friend who plays melee and he won a bunch of local tournaments. But what character did he use? Roy. Our boy.
ACKSHUALLY tournaments use three stocks But also, no need to restrict yourself to just omega stages. There's like 20 stages that are completely neutral and competitive that aren't flat and boring. Idk. Play your game how you want of course, just saying
I grew up with melee and brawl and I kept going back to melee without knowing anything about the competitive scene, the game just felt better. You could keep your dashing momentum while jumping!
kirjian that’s exactly how I was. I remember when I first got brawl and I was like “why is this so slow?” The pace was thrilling in Melee. Launching your opponent and catching up to them within a second to deal more damage was just so much fun, and I think brawl lost that thrilling feeling with its speed.
i think people who shit on other smash games (in the competitive sense) are childish. this goes for melee players who hate every other game and smash 4 players who hate melee.
Tbh, some comp players do like other smash games and give them a try now and then (including the mods). But those who piss on Brawl or Smash 4 because there isn't a comp scene kinda are just asking to be regressive. I pay them no mind because I like a balanced diet of multiplayer and single player. Not just multiplayer.
Ben Link smash 4's competitive scene is pretty big, not as big as melee's, but its up there. though, when smash ultimate comes out i think it will end up obsolete like brawl.
I'll tolerate hate but only in the context of what makes a good smash game for competitive mode. This never gets asked in chess because it's already decided on. That said, I'll almost hate brawl. Not hate, just... rather wish they never put in random tripping. And wish they didn't balance it THAT much so everyone's sorta equal...
I think nostalgia plays a huge role in the love for Melee, like your preference for Brawl. Old people like me grew up with Melee, and it was quite some time between Melee and Brawl, so it's what we had for a long time.
Yeah, I agree with pretty much all you said. I like the newer games better, but the jump from 64 to Melee is truly mindblowing. As good as all Smash games are, the impact Melee had on the series will never be topped. And no amount of fanboys who hate everything that isn't Melee is going to make me forget that.
Okay, I keep seeing this “melee elitist” kinda image of Melee fans in the comments and I’ve only found one of them actually in the comments. It just gets a tad irritating. I totally love and respect fans of all smash games. Just because I like Melee the most, people keep putting me in a box for being a “Melee fan” and I have completely nothing against anybody for liking Brawl, and I know many other top Melee players are respectful as well like Armada and M2K! Hope you get me dude. Sometimes we just gotta vibe to Ocean Man by Ween and chill cuz we all love Smash, and we all just people at the end of the day. Enjoying what we love.
I spent some time learning some advanced stuff for Melee. The problem is that it takes a ton of time to master even the simplest techniques like L- cancels. I've learned enough that I can understand high level matches easily, but couldn't actually pull off the crazy difficult tech they do.
theacp127 Wait a smash game where you have to put some work in the lab to git gud at? Preposterous! shitty game. Literally every other fighter requires practice to get even remotely good at. Id like to see you try to play tekken let alone melee.
Octavio Gonzalez I happen to be very good at Tekken actually, one of my favorite series. I didn't say I was bad a Melee either. I've probably spent hundreds of hours playing and practicing. My point was that I'm not as good as the pros, who have spent the last decade at least perfecting their skills. You're just trying to act elitest about it.
I love how I’m literally one year older then Scott but version of Smash is my forever favorite. Probably because I got a gamecube at Blockbuster with a copy of smash and no memory card. Me and my buddies still play this. Brawl didn’t have this impression. So crazy to see how much 1 year makes a difference when it comes to nostalgia.
This is honestly the best review I’ve ever listened to for Melee from a casual perspective. People often slam Melee saying that the only good thing about it is the competitive play, but the casual play really is just as good. As a competitive player myself, thank you for giving such a genuine review of Melee as a whole without getting wrapped up in the “politics” of the competitive scene lol
Yeah, I pretty much agree with this video. I got into Melee in late 2004, and it kick-started my long-lasting love for Smash Bros.. Melee is easily one of the best examples of a quality sequel. Take the core ideas of Smash 64 and crank it up to 15. There is so much expansion to it. Smash 4 is my favorite Smash game, followed by Brawl, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is unquestionably the most impressive jump from one Smash game to the next.
Just passing by to remind you of how beautiful it is listening to Scott and the way he talks about Smash Bros. It's just great, you can see how passionate he is when it comes to Smash
Melee: Your time is up Ultimate: Well, you're gonna have to catch me first! (Tries to airdodge into the ground and fails repeatedly) Ultimate: Youch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shark Tale is also a game for the Gamecube.
At least 64 is better than brawl.
64 actually still has somewhat of a competitive scene lol. Brawl's competitive scene died after Sm4sh came out

Hahaha melee will never be topped.
Haha opinions and meeting in the middle
ultimate takes second to melee for me
ultimate takes secind compared to melee now. Especially the online
hahahahahahahhaha good joke, friendo
Brawl was my first smash game and carries the most nostalgia, ultimate is my favorite semi competitive smash (playing my friends with 2 stock no items omega only and actually trying we’re just bad) and melee is the best comp game. I only have 1 friend who plays melee and he won a bunch of local tournaments. But what character did he use? Roy. Our boy.
ACKSHUALLY tournaments use three stocks
But also, no need to restrict yourself to just omega stages. There's like 20 stages that are completely neutral and competitive that aren't flat and boring.
Idk. Play your game how you want of course, just saying
Also you have a friend that wins locals with ROI?
Other smash games are better than melee
Okay Obama
@@SuperGamerxl when it comes to competitive, none
I grew up with melee and brawl and I kept going back to melee without knowing anything about the competitive scene, the game just felt better. You could keep your dashing momentum while jumping!
kirjian that’s exactly how I was. I remember when I first got brawl and I was like “why is this so slow?” The pace was thrilling in Melee. Launching your opponent and catching up to them within a second to deal more damage was just so much fun, and I think brawl lost that thrilling feeling with its speed.
Brawl isn't even that slow
@@SuperGamerxl Brawl is a slog compared to Melee and Ultimate. Hell, Smash 4 has faster gameplay.
@@jotarobogard Brawl isn't that slow

Finally Scott! All here waiting for this video!
i think people who shit on other smash games (in the competitive sense) are childish. this goes for melee players who hate every other game and smash 4 players who hate melee.
tyler Yeah fr just let us like what we like. Melee is definitely not my preferred smash game but I don't hate on people for liking it.
And wish they didn't balance it THAT much so everyone's sorta equal...
tyler I personally think Ultimate will renders 4’s scene obsolete
I think nostalgia plays a huge role in the love for Melee, like your preference for Brawl. Old people like me grew up with Melee, and it was quite some time between Melee and Brawl, so it's what we had for a long time.
it's mostly the competitive scene, actually, not nostalgia
Hey if those copies of Melee are real I’ll take one for $Free.99 please.
Pacob 62 So, 99 cents?
Bryce Bitetti Sure.
TH-cam: "video posted 1 year ago"
Me: It's literally 2 years tomorrow....

I've learned enough that I can understand high level matches easily, but couldn't actually pull off the crazy difficult tech they do.
theacp127 this is why melee is the best. I've probably played this for like 300 hours. I'm still bad
I've only been playing for about a week and I have so much fun playing it, I also like labbing with characters, rather than watching a combo tutorial
L cancels aren' too hard imo. Doing a SHFFL'd aerial consistently at the start sure, but at the end of the day l cancels are just press l, r, or z lol
theacp127 Wait a smash game where you have to put some work in the lab to git gud at? Preposterous! shitty game. Literally every other fighter requires practice to get even remotely good at. Id like to see you try to play tekken let alone melee.
Octavio Gonzalez I happen to be very good at Tekken actually, one of my favorite series. I didn't say I was bad a Melee either. I've probably spent hundreds of hours playing and practicing. My point was that I'm not as good as the pros, who have spent the last decade at least perfecting their skills. You're just trying to act elitest about it.
This game was the shit. So many hours of me and brothers playing vs matches.
And now melee has better online than every smash game
Melee doesn't have online. The emulators and stuff do.

Me and my buddies still play this. Brawl didn’t have this impression. So crazy to see how much 1 year makes a difference when it comes to nostalgia.
Melee is truly a masterpiece. Still relevant even today. Very few games of that kind of life span.
I loved how in melee the Pit trophy hinted that he would be in a future smash game.
Some dude was so ticked off about the metaknight trophy being wrong, he almost singlehandedly designed metaknight for brawl.
Ever consider doing a video covering pre-order bonuses? Seems like that would be right up your alley
9:43 I didn’t know Melee was ported to the Xbox!!
RIP Trophies...ok, where did my soul go again?
Yeah, I pretty much agree with this video.
I got into Melee in late 2004, and it kick-started my long-lasting love for Smash Bros..
Melee is easily one of the best examples of a quality sequel. Take the core ideas of Smash 64 and crank it up to 15. There is so much expansion to it.
Smash 4 is my favorite Smash game, followed by Brawl, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is unquestionably the most impressive jump from one Smash game to the next.
The one thing I love about melee is the Mario character design. It's my favorite definitive Mario design.

I didn't know about Smash 64, so when my brother got a Gamecube for Christmas of 2001 and Smash Melee we thought it was the coolest thing. It was the first Gamecube game we really played and the improved graphics compared to any N64 game were just mesmerizing. I was almost 22 and my brother was 16, and we had a blast. A couple of years later he went off to college and our days of gaming together were mostly gone. I still think of my brother every time I think of Melee. I miss those days.
