The story Richard relates starting at 41:51 with meeting the man who would become his godfather, strikes me as THE answer to how we can most effectively evangelize our friends, family and the world around us. I've saved a quote from Fr. Stephen Freemen on this idea that just keeps coming back to me and I'm trying to make my prayer:
"That the world is hungry is beyond doubt, but the world is not hungry for a new and winning argument. The world hungers for God whether it knows this or not. The proper Christian answer to the hunger of the world is to be found only in the manifestation of God. Thus the challenge of a modern atheist should not be met with an anxious rejoinder from our panoply of arguments but with the urgency of prayer that we ourselves might become an answer through the reality of the presence of God in our lives."

Wow. Keep those words near indeed. To become is the way all of this now resonates within me. “To prove” is hollow… like the word implies….without a center.

It would be such a treasure to make a list of the "old but gold" safe stories for kids.

Hi John, what a beautiful talk! I really appreciate what Richard said about not having your home culture overtake the culture you are evangelizing/ministering to. I studied abroad in Jordan during my undergrad years and expected to find an Old World culture. Jordan is definitely Old World, but especially in Amman it is being colonized by the New World- Western mindsets, development projects, consumer products, and institutional forms. How do you work alongside that reality? I believe you have hinted at this in other podcasts as well, but I would love to hear more about how people who appreciate the Old World interact with the incursion of the New World out in the field. Do you try to protect the local population from it? Do you work with it? Alongside it? Do you try to translate contemporary trends and terms for the local people with an Old World mindset?

We’re going to have dinners too in the big room, I call it the ballroom, which has crystal chandeliers, huge crown molding and my mom’s (RIP 2018) antique furniture and crystal, China, etc.
I hope to attract younger adults to learn about Christ through beauty!

Awesome stuff. Related to the hospitality and culture gatherings you were talking about at the end: not sure if you've heard of the Sheehans' Artefact Institute; I think there would be good collaborative opportunities there.

To be a missionary is to attempt to make faith transparent in a new language. Wow.

Let's not get too nostalgic for the old world.... it also had a lot of serious problems.
