still playing RDR2 from time to time, best open world ever made in my opinion. Rockstar is the GOAT when it comes to Open world games
100 percent agree
RDR2 or Skyrim for best of all time
I do beleive they where the first to do it or do it successfully
Rdr2 and the Witcher 3 will always be the open world goats.
For me RDR2 has no rival. Then Kingdom Come Deliverance is a great game, difficult to master the combat but once you learn is super fun.
What I like about Dead Ialand 2 was that it looks exactly as advertised and the game didn't have any bugs. I had more fun with Dying Light because there is so much to do but I hope they continue the Dead Island series. For the time being, Danbuster should focus on adding more content for Dead Island 2. Haven't been on for a while. Maybe there is more now.
I'm pretty sure it just got its first story expansion. Takes place in some psycho's art mansion.
Who is Dan Buster my guy?
@@TheRealCaptainFreedom he meant Dambuster Studios, the people behind the game.
They also added some outfits but most of them are locked behind dumb stuff like special editions or having to link your amazon prime membership and some other websites accounts to your deepsilver account, oh and also they're timed exclusives so yeah....................
Yeah I'm hoping it will drop on steam sometime next year so I can play it. The gore effects look great.
Wow! Sons of the Forrest really nailed the graphics.
Fortunately because it's the only good thing in the game
I bought Cyberpunk 2077 at launch and I can’t tell you how glad I am that I waited to play til after 2.1, I’ve enjoyed exploring the city without any prejudice or preconceptions and not to mention this play through is my first time trying mods and its freaking awesome! 🤘💯
Just picked it up couple weeks ago, only like 15 hours in but i am enjoying it!
The game was great on release. People just had shit-tier PCs and ran with the TH-cam hype. It's amazing now though.
@@manashieldmediaNot really, most of the criticism didn’t come from PC users, I am one myself, but from ps4 and XBONE users since it wasn’t ok in thouse.
Also idk how it is now, but the game felt truly life-less, you could park your car in the middle of the road and people just stopped behind you, not at all real reactions to stuff you did, I personally didn’t have much bugs on pc but didn’t like how lifeless the game felt.
@@bestintheworld4850 🥱
@@bestintheworld4850 Wahh cars stopped in the road bad game 👿
Having a lot of fun with Avatar. Though I do certainly have issues with the game it's overall a pretty good experience
I'm quite impressed with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. I expected *WAY* less from this game. I got positively surprised by all aspects, especially the graphics and scenarios.
just the graphics imo.. cant deny that
You seem like you enjoy Starfield as well
It is basically Far Cry Primal with a new skin and improved graphics. I mean, it is basically Ubisoft.
@@ariellira5881it's more than that, until 6ou play it you never realize it
I didn't buy it cause I hate first person games 💯
I liked alot about dead island 2. But just felt bit short in terms of content. Wanted crafting/upgrading to be bit more impactful. But the gore system was hands down my fav.
Cyberpunk is in my top 5 favorite games ever now. They really redeemed themselves and have went over and above adding even more to make it how it should have been. PL is amazing.
That shit is ass even the driving feels like you’re going 1 mph
Would you honestly recommend it to someone on the fence about it? What's the time investment needed like?
@Rawgangsta it's honestly like a rpg as far as gameplay, if you run through the story, or if you like to run through the side missions and complete the game, 40-80 hours, give or take 10 depending on how u play each mission. Actually u can add 15 hrs with the Phantom Liberty DLC also.
Ditto choom, even before Phantom Liberty, this game became my top 5 all time favorite game also, been doing multiple playthroughs since day 1. Each update has given me a new reason to play again.
And Phantom Liberty has only added on to those playthroughs 😅
@@AS34N you will get your moneys worth, if you just wanna cruise thru the story you can do that as well. You can put an easy 80 hours into it or play like 20 if you choose. The side content is totally worth playing though.
Phantom Liberty is an excellent expansion to Cyberpunk 2077 that delivers a rich, polished bonus act to the dystopian RPG 😍
Cyberpunk has a great storyline not gona lie.
This reads like an ad ngl
Stop lying

Avatar co-op is my favorite gaming experience of the year.
Mr.Falcon, may I ask what mic you record with?
I'm a baritone and use an EC RE20, but yours does mid range really nice.
At last someone is giving well deserved recognition to Season: A letter to the future. That game is nothing short of a simulated immersive journey. Glad to see it here.
Never heard of it, but it looks right up my alley!
@UnjustifiedRecs yes, a fantastic looking game - going to grab this if I can
i never heard of it, but this video sold me on it
Currently on steam sale for 12 quid, snagged that straight away
@@UnjustifiedRecs Great purchase. If ya are into narrative games, this one will take ya into a whole different journey.
A few weeks ago I started cyberpunk 2077…the 2.0 and 2.1 update have done amazing things and I’m happier than ever that my first experience of the game is version 2.0
I started a new playthrough for cyberpunk 2077 yesterday and its STILL not fixed 3 bugs in 2 hours. I dont know what people are gushing about. The bugs are not game breaking , but it does affect immersion.
@@arun199113 Which platform do you play on? I’ve just started my second playthrough on ps5 and it runs very smooth. There are only a few insignificant bugs. You really have to be a snob to dismiss such a great game due to such trivial bugs
@@arun199113
3 bugs in 2 hours doesn't seem serious. What kind of bugs were they?
I still think it's incredibly overrated. I also played it for the first time with 2.0 and it's like 80% cut scenes and after 18 hours the story is over.
It just felt very forgettable and I wasn't motivated to play a lot of the sidequests afterwards.
The atmosphere is good at times during some of the heavily scripted sequences but that's about it.
Plus there are still tons of bugs and glitches. People floating in the air. Terrible physics.
@@Grapefruit5000yeah physics in that game is mess i don't know why people are still defending cdpr they clearly advertise it as most immersive open world experience to date and when it launched people were like oh it's rpg details don't matter like what why they still defend that game is beyond me
If mad-max 2 came out next year, pretty sure that'll be in the top 15 open world 2024
👍🏼
Hey Falcon, can you please include a link to the older videos that you reference? Just makes it easier for us to follow.
8:15 wasn't a fan of the movies and never felt enticed to read the books... but hooo boy, the game was so much fun XD my face muscles started cramping with how much I was grinning, I enjoyed the game a lot
I find it strange that Diablo 4 and Starfield were placed so high. At least Zelda got its much deserved first place.
Looks like Microsoft sponsored this top.
Diablo 4 crap of they year
Agreed. I'm done with that series it was trash after D2
Tbh im so glad to see Avatar make it to this list. The game is fantastic and Ubisoft did a TERRIBLE job marketing it. Massive did an AMAZING job making it.
I absolutely LOVE the Far Cry series, and Avatar makes me stop murdering people to just marvel at the atmosphere
That's a near-impossible feat lol
Ubisoft misses out on marketing part
The game sucks, I can pay 1 dollar to buy Far Cry 3, and I would have played the same game. Then i would have saved so much money, but i prefer to save that last dollar and not play any of those games.
It's a far cry reskin the game sucks
@@gamingjesus420 and if you think that then you've obviously never played it.
I would have put Cyberpunk much higher, but great list all the same, picked up some new titles to try as a result.
Love it when Jedi: Survivor gets some love. Based on first-hand experience on PC, Patches 7 and 7.5 more or less ironed out majority of the release day wrinkles and it's far more playable now than back then.
I loved Jedi Survivor so much. It had everything I wanted from a Jedi Fallen Order Sequel and more.
It feels like it went from a fun little Spin Off story with Fallen Order to becoming its own identity with a ton of content, great characters, amazing villains and insane set-pieces
i have a 16gb ram and rtx 2080, yeah it's an old GPU but it's still way above average (according to steam data) and rtx 2080 is above the recommended settings of the game.
and i still CAN'T play jedi survivor on a stable 60fps at LOWEST settings. and in the times i get 60fps, the stuttering is still annoying.
totally unplayable for most people.
worst thing is, it doesn't even look THAT good like RDR2.
@@SnafuWT that fricking sucks. IDK what to tell you, I've not had problems with the game but your experience is absolutely valid too. Just wish everyone who wants to play it can enjoy it problem-free
@@DelusioNic014 yeah i'll probably just wait till they patch it or till i get a PS5. i ABSOLUTELY LOVED fallen order, i want to play jedi survivor so bad.
i've seen some performance mods for it on nexusmods but i dunno if it'll work.
Sons of the Forest is absolutely a beautiful game. I very rarely purchase games as soon as they’re released anymore but I purchased it within the first hour of the official release.
Hope it releases on PS5 soon
exactly the same as me man, so worth it, also not being a massively overpriced game either like a lot are nowadays
@@mrjamezjc9845 yeah exactly. I think it cost what, $40? Not bad for a big, beautiful map.
It's "beautiful" but it's a crappy game, one of the most bland and boring I've played in recent years, an empty shell.
Plus the graphics are pretty, ok, but we don't even really enjoy them since the map is insipid, what's the point of having pretty graphics if there's nothing that makes you want to explore and discover the world?
never knew atomic heart was open world . i added it to my play later list . but not checked it out yet. looks fun
When open world games are done right like these 👌🏻 cant wait to play SM2, Jedi Survivor, DI2, AH, and Avatar
I dont know about the last 5 games listed here but great video for those looking to experiment I guess
Starfield at #3 is wild
Not really
It’s has a very nice open world and big one
@@theemptyhandofdc2458 doesn't even have an open world it has open segmented zones that you can fast travel to through menus and there's nothing on most of them except the same 5 or 6 repeated "points of interest." All separated by SIXTEEN TIMES THE LOADING SCREENS
Not sure if this is just a list of games or if they’re supposed to be in ranking order 🤷♂️ and even if it is, it’s all just somebody’s opinion. Who cares?
Yea, it's pretty hilarious that Starfield and AC Mirage are even on this list. Just make the list shorter. These are not games that need to be celebrated.
Didn't expect to see Atomic Heart on here. I liked it, thought everyone else was disappointed with it.
It’s awesome how many big IP video games we got and all of them were good to great. Plus all of them being open world we were spoiled this year
Honorable but admittedly niche mention, is Asgard's Wrath 2. It's the first big budget open-world VR RPG. It feels like a mixture of Skyrim and God of War, but in VR. I bought a Quest 2 about 2 years ago for this game. I just didn't know it yet. If anyone has a Quest 2 or 3, and you enjoy Skyrim, GET THIS GAME! I hyped myself up again to the point where I wanna continue playing again, which is what I'm going to do right now!
2077 should be expansive and have at least 2 more dlcs. Seems a waste to not keep working in it. It has great frame work for growing.
It's definitely unfortunate. Would love a dlc every year until cyberpunk 2. Obviously, they would be smaller than phantum liberty with the amount of resources going to cyberpunk 2.
Not sure FF16 qualifies as an open world. We can debate about the quality of FF16, but whether it's an open world is not really a point of debate.
That is the case with a few of the games listed in this vid.
2pm real time, playlist playing in the back ground, and just driving around night city night mode. Different feeling fr
The story of the dead island 2 is amazing dude you must have mentioned it🥶
Just wanted to say thanks to you guys for the shift you put in. Gameranx is my favourite channel and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the work that goes into your content. Hope you guys and your families all have an awesome Xmas 🎅
I think there should be a split on genres for certain games. Like for Final Fantasy, I think there should be both fast action games, AND turn-based games. I feel the same about Pokémon as well, where there should be both open 3D games that could even shake up the combat a bit, as well as traditional top-down turn-based games. Both series are large enough that they could squeak by financially making both kinds of games. The "big" 3D releases, and the smaller budget "traditional" games.
I will play Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom when the new Nintendo Switch is released
👍🏼
Huh.. There were some surprising games on this list, especially given where on the list everything was. Anyways, thanks for the video, Falcon!
What game is the thumbnail from?
Watched a bunch of gameranx videos during my acid trip come down., and felt great. Thanks for the awesome content ❤️
Will have to check out #7 . Sounds interesting and passed me by.
I also liked Expanse telltale season 1, mortal kombat 1 campaign, and super Mario bros wonder
FFXVI is not open world.... More like linear zones
Starfield and Like a Dragon Gaiden 🏆
Thank you Falcon for your perspective on the avatar franchise. You are not flying on that island alone.
I like that these games were ranked in descending order
Wicked year for games. FF16 as an open-world is a bit of a misnomer. I think SE struggled to flesh out how to go about that aspect without embracing a true open world formula. Superb game nonetheless, and I can't wait to see where they go with FF17.
Zelda TotK is just, wow. It has so many problems, and yet the new tools and gameplay mechanics are undeniably a thrill. Nintendo just missed the holy grail with it by not fixing BotW's innumerable issues. I do miss the old Zelda formula, but hey, what we got this year was pretty fun.
Also, Jedi Surivor is NOT an open world game.
I can't wait to play Totk. I'm trying to get through Botw in a reasonable time frame but its so good that I'm finding it hard not take my time.
Just enjoy it!
The main issue I have with The Crew Motorsport and the new Avatar game being on this list is, in the light of Ubisoft's removal of the Crew (and the ability to play the single player portion offline on your own), we have no way of knowing if we can play these games later in the future. What they did with The Crew makes it more of a rental than an actual purchase than we have seen before and I feel they need to think on hard on such a decision. I am, for example, not buying either of these 2 until I figure out if they plan on releasing an offline patch so I can play this game on my own.
They kind of did the same with the Trackmania franchise, where it's now just more of a service type game where you rent it for a year, or whatever tier you want to pay for, and will never be able to be played in the future because it's no longer an offline game. You can play it for free, but it's more limited now than it was when it first released as Stadium.
@@DKTronics70 It's true that Trackmania is less than it used to be, but the Crew will be unplayable once this change goes through. This sort of idiocy should give everyone that wants to buy any more games digitally (which, let's be honest is quickly becoming the only option) reason to think twice since they have no idea what their purchase will be worth down the road. This goes double for any sort of game with a multiplayer mode baked in like the Crew's.
This year was amazing for gaming (and VR gaming), and a large chunk of the plethora of great games was Open World games, and I have to give it to Cyberpunk, because it obviously wasn't one of 2020's best, but as Falcon already critiqued (more elaborately), they turned that game around in a big way, finally making it the game we all wanted at launch. But Hogwartz Legacy.. THAT was the biggest surprise hit for me, and I'm not even a big HP fan, it's just a really good open world game with some excellent combat and progression
I love star wars Jedi survivor
Happy Holidays gameranx
starfield top 3 LMFAOOOOO
I'd put Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores on this list, since DLC is allowed. For me, it's the best of the year. I'm also fully enjoying Starfield, in a totally different way - but HFW: Burning Shores is far and away my favorite game of 2023, and among my top 5 games of all time.
Good call!
HFW easily has the Best Graphics ever on PS5... That game is just insane looking... I played on my 55 inch 4K TV and mind was blown when I first started it... Only game that can surpass that game in terms of graphics will be GTA 6
@@yashsoni7614but everything beside the graphics is just so bland
@@rensb9214 ah yes, figuring out how to destroy a robotic t-rex with miniguns on it without getting absolutely destroyed. Very bland.
True, it was a expansion with big open map, much bigger and much more open then tiny cp2077 expansion 😅
dead island 2 isnt a open world game
Assassin's Creed Mirage looks really good, people complain about the supernatural abilities but i would argue that makes the game interesting
Can someone tell me what the game from the thumbnail is? Can’t find it
I can now see why they made avatar first person. It definitely does feel way more immersive being so up close to the forests and landscape.
It will be amazing in vr.
To see your character's toes. Just like in Cyberpunk 2077.
Even though Atomic Heart does have an "open area", I found this area extremely hard to explore and enjoy due to the infinitely spawning enemies. There is really nothing to discover except for those training grounds (mini dungeons?) and it serves no major function besides going from one main underground area (Main dungeons) to another in order to advance the story. In terms of level design I think it's more comparable to BioShock 2, where you could traverse the open sea to go from one area to another. I really hope the developers decides to do another Atomic heart because the world, setting, and story they created deserves to be further explored. They just need to decide whether to do an open world kind of game or a more linear one like bioshock.
Thank you. I quit after I got to the open world. It’s literally just being pestered by endless AI enemies that are annoying to fight while trying to find your way around an annoying area
Agreed, atomic heart could have been so good
@@AFatOcelot at several points in the story I wanted to quit too, and they were always in the outdoor areas.
The game was absolutely peak when you were in the enclosed spaces like the underground areas but the open world was awful.
Still I completed it but I would definitely rank it below something like Jedi Survivor
nah the crew being online only is not a positive thing. as soon as they shut down severs like they already proved they will is not ok. stop defending devs who do that
I really love open world games where you can go wherever you want do whatever you want at your leisure like minigames, visit clothing stores, restaurants and so much more that I can think of.
I feel like BG3 should have made the cut, but I can see why it was left out in comparison. But me personally, I think the world is STUNNING.
BG3 while being an AMAZING game isn't really open world. Baldurs gate the city alone is like 4 different maps if you don't include all the smaller dungeon maps inside of the city areas.
It’s not an open world tho. We can love everything that bg3 is. But they can’t be on every top list just cuz of that. Lmao its everything but a top 10 open world game of 2023
That game is good but you probably should know what 'open world' actually means.
same can be said about final fantasy, star wars or starfield... or @@canadiangopher4443
Dead island 2 is less open world then bg3 is though tbf
Star Wars Jedi Survivor, AC Mirage and Crew Motorfest 👍🏻
Love to see what the developers could do with a Zelda game on XboxX or a PS5.
Did we forget about Balders Gate 3? Hahah Solid list other than that. Enjoyed a lot of these games
I love how the inclusion of Diablo 4 makes me skeptical of the other titles chosen lmao.
Pretty much the entire list and order does lol
I blundered in here but definitely one for the Do Not Recommend Channel Again ha
@@jd_99 lol after I finished the video I realized that the entire list is filled with solid "C" tier games in terms of quality.
@@TrashcanActual At least 5 of the games suck. They are not a channel for game recommendations, because they are void of opinion. The information they give on games is designed to offend the fewest people possible to maximise their profit. This channel can only be used for video news summaries.
I really love avatar frontiers of pandora. The game has made me more hyped for Star wars outlaws if anything. Great video 👍.
So glad to see the crew motorfest on here it’s so good I wish it would’ve one best sports/racing game this year
Wanted to try the game but what turned me off was the always online.....that's the same reason I didn't buy Forza Motorsport.
Now I am interested in Starfield. Thank you [>
Y’all should’ve put The Day Before as an honorable mention just to troll us
I think Starfield was the troll pick lol
I agree 100% with your picks of cyberpunk, hogwarts legacy, starfield, dead island 2 and atomic heart. I love all these games ive beaten all 5 of them on the hardest difficulty these games are amazing experiences. A lesser known open world i wouldve personally added would be the talos principle 2 that game is like open world portal with gorgeous graphics. I just started star wars jedi survivor and its great!! 🤟
How much free time do you have?!?! omg!
@@loading...7583 i game much more than the average gamer lol
I feel like Atomic Heart is probably the most difficult on highest difficulty, but the others are fairly easy still on hardest setting, just gotta use patience and pay a lot more attention to your surroundings. Especially in Dead Island 2, because using the elemental stuff like shocking the puddles and stuff becomes crucial.
Love open-world games! ❤😊🎉
cyberpunk was so much fun, i just wish if it had more stuff to do and invest in, beyond missions. casual activities i mean
Im currently playing Dead Island 2 second run and changed my character, let me tell you it's a refresher to see it through another characters eyes, Im having fun! Im exploring more! and genuinely enjoying the DLC!
Haven't tried that piece yet. Would you say it's worth paying a 30 slot for? Loved the other DI's way back when, but I'm scarred by buying newer games for obvious reasons 😅
yea I would say grab it on sale since it can get repetitive unless you are always looking for better weapons or schematics, wait for the DLC to be on sale as well!

Given how beautiful Avatar: FoP is with the Snowdrop engine, it actually makes me very much looking forward to the eventual The Division 3.
Cyberpunk did the impossible like no man's sky
No. Stop. This is not a thing. Both companies falsely advertised incomplete, broken games, then finally got around to making them playable. No applause necessary
@@mgiebus1869 So, in your opinion, these companies don't deserve a second chance? They screwed up their launch, so they're dead forever? Do you hold yourself to such a standard?
@@MatthewTyreeKS any other industry wouldn't put up with this, let alone praise it. So yeah, I hold myself to the same standard. Pizza place sells you a pizza and half of it's missing, that pizza place won't be there long. Car dealer sells you a car that isn't finished, you crash and die, car manufacturer's out of business. Game company sells you half a game, you patiently wait, then praise them for finally giving you what you paid for
@@ryanshoults123 I'm playing the game right now dumbass. People still driving invisible cars, constant pop in and pop out. So no, it's not fixed. The saddest part is the potential it had because the graphics and world are great
@@ryanshoults123 why would I be respectful. I have zero respect for you. Same goes with yt.
The Crew Motorfest- Oahu isn't a big island. Depending on traffic, you could easily circumnavigate the entire island in a couple of hours. So If it's a small map, that isn't a bad thing. That's actually pretty damn accurate, actually. I haven't played the game, not really a racing fan. But I've lived in Hawaii off and on since birth, and Oahu is one of the main islands I spent time on (Hawaii/ Big Island for the locals reading being the other one). There aren't that many neon and fluorescent lights though.
Scooby doobie dooooo! Shaka Zuluuuu! FFXVI was spectacular. Can’t wait for the DLC.
Starfield in a best list? Bruh....
As much as I adored Spider-Man 2, I do feel it’s a shame that there’s only 2 things to do after you 100% it - random crimes and replaying Mysteriums. I loved using stealth in the Hunter bases, would be great to replay them at will (we could replay bases in the first game, not sure why it’s not a thing here).

Awesome thanks🎉😊😊😊😊
Having Spiderman lower than Season and Atomic Heart is weird.
How can Starfield be considered an open world? 😂
Because it is. How can jedi survivor or dead island be considered open world?
Woah, a letter to the future looks VERY good and rly promising, might give it a try
Great video as always
My favorite videogame genre next to rpgs, can always count on you fellas to recommend the best, much love and happy holidays to everyone!
Open world isn't a genre...

please invert the number count down slides. the white is blaring in the dark late at night. love the content!
I loved Atomic Heart mainly for the incredible environment and cool enemies...but I admit it was far from perfect. That being said, I really hope Mundfish learns from their mistakes and comes out with an even better game next time.
It really felt like the game wanted to be Portal and Bioshock combined.
The puzzle lab things were definitely the meat of the game
Currently playing final fantasy 16 rn and love it, Probably because I love the dmc combat so much
Good game I think
What about Baldur's Gate 3?
Tour de force lol
I'm learning so much from you
May the force be with u Falcon
Run it on 4K!
Starfield is my jaaam! 😍❤ Also busy with CP2077, BG3 and Hogwarts Legacy; it’s been my fave year of gaming in a long time.
I've been holding out on AC Mirage and Avatar. I think maybe when I'm done with AW2 Final Draft I'll pick one and try it.
I would save avatar. Mirage felt very unfinished and the combat and moment is lack luster, story was short and mirrored Valhalla and it doesn’t have much replay value.
Finally
Been expectin' dis video
Its nice to see a very positive video about gaming right now. It seems like most videos dropping are just out to trash games, devs, and gaming platforms
starfield is NOT an open world game!!!! You have too load to go to stores!!!!!!!!! It's semi open world at best
