    My signature piece is scarves. I was in a kindergarten classroom for 20 years and I wore a scarf almost everyday. At times the children have called me the scarf lady! I LOVE scarves even when no one else is wearing them. I feel totally complete with a scarf and lost without one. I have learned many ways to tie them over the years and people come up to me and ask me how I tied a particular scarf. I get compliments all the time. That is my unique piece. Love your blog, I get so much useful information here.
    Thanks for being you.

    The biggest secret is wearing the proper undergarments for your body shape proportions and the outfit you are wearing. The second secret is wearing the proper shoes. The 3rd secret is getting your hairstyle for your colouring and face shape, lifestyle. The 4th secret is knowing your colour palette and using it to build your wardrobe. The 5th secret is your accessories should match your colour palette and your body type that including belts and sunglasses. Thanks for the video

    I think a stylist woman knows how to make sure not too much “fine china” is hanging out in their outfit. I’m talking about baby doll dresses or short, shorts, tops that are overly sheer without appropriate foundation wear. Especially as we grow older, I think it’s important to know how to be stylish and modest as well.

      So agree. When women do this, i think they are shouting, "Hey!! I want attention." A secure woman of confidence and style, doesn't need attention. My opinion only.

      I am happy I don't have to be a stylist. I know what kind of styles I wear so I am my own stylist. I know what looks good on me and apparently I do okay. I always have people telling me how I know how to dress and have good accessories, no matter the occasion. I don't wear the most current jeans. I wear what looks good on me, regardless of what jeans are in style.

    Just discovered you this morning! My physical therapist talked to me about having properly fitting undergarments. This was in respect to my back issues which are a result of my poor posture. Proper posture and the right bra significantly help the frump factor and help whatever you're wearing look better.

      I worked retail for several years and it was so difficult to get women to dress for their shape rather than a popular look that really didn’t suit them. Also to disregard size and wear what fit. Just because you can squeeze into a certain size doesn’t mean you ought to actually wear that size.

    My style secret is to use a little restraint and keep clothes on the simply-cut side. The more detailed, the faster a garment will date. I like to add detail to my outfits with accessories instead, like a print silk scarf, classic jewelry or good leather belt. Also, I prefer more classic patterns than, say, a huge multi-colored tropical print or a Boho floral.

    Hi Kay. What a great topic! I think you hit the nail on the head with suggesting that stylish women have a signature in the way they dress. My sister in laws Nana lived in to her 90s and was always stylish. She always had her hair up in a French comb and had pearls in her ears. Always elegant and refined. I don’t think I can really remember her actual clothes. Just that she had style and fantastic accessories and poise.

I've also put on some weight so now I feel fat and frumpy lol! While I was working my style was usually black or dark pants, a shirt or dressy top, a jacket, heels and subtle jewelry. A stylish woman wears things she is comfortable in that fit properly. I don’t feel confident if I have to keep pulling at the back of a blouse to keep it from falling too low or pulling at a top that doesn’t cover my abdomen. I love what you said about knowing your shape signature style. I’m having to learn some new rules as I age but I don’t have to give up looking stylish.

    Great tips, Kay! I hear you about skinny jeans being out of style this year. However, my long legs are my best feature and in the fall, my signature look is a skinny jean or pant tucked into some elegant riding boots. I top this look with a blazer, poncho or vest and it is my fall uniform. So I'm never giving up my skinny pants for that reason! I agree that they certainly never suited women with a fuller or curvier thigh or hipline, but they work for me.

    Hi Kay! Yup... you did it again!! Hit the nail right on the head!!! I agree with everything you said especially when you said, "that is just not me". I thought I was the only one who looks at style and feels where do I fit in? At 72 I no longer have the arms, legs or feet to handle some of these styles!!! However, while I sometimes feel like classic me, I sometimes do get complimented on my "simple" style. I am not looking to win any fashion awards and decided a long time ago as long as I feel comfortable, neat and appropriately dressed I'm happy! Love your channel and I will see you in the next one! Have a great day! :)

    Talbots vintage skirts resonate with me, especially the cityscape ones. Talbots fits me great, but it’s much too nautical for me now and the colors are all wrong currently. So I’m sticking with “pre-enjoyed” Talbots items from Poshmark and my local thrift store.
    I think knowing your brands, the ones that fit you and you can trust the sizes, is one of the keys to being stylish. The separates from that brand will be cohesive and work well together, rather than having a closet full of various brands that seem to fight each other.

    Such great advice Kay! I wish I could send a link of this to my cousin without her taking it the wrong way. She’s lost 30+ pounds and looks amazing but remains stuck in that “frumpy” style; not feeling worthy of a new wardrobe to honor her new self. We both love to shop at thrift stores so money is not the issue here. Friends have also given her some stylish clothes that no longer fit them. I believe it’s more about self-esteem and how she still sees herself. I know that your TH-cam channel has really inspired me!

    I recently discovered your channel, and I LOVE it!!! I feel like you are one of my friends IRL. We are very similar in a lot of ways, similar age, I'm 57, and I play golf. I live in Texas and your lovely southern accent reminds me of a friend of mine from South Carolina. I am also very interested in style, and pretty much everything you say resonates with me. So I am writing today to say, god bless you, for saying out loud that not everyone feels good in a blazer. I have one black blazer that I hunted for, for probably a year, because, of course, everyone needs a black blazer. And let me tell you, every time I put that blazer on, I feel over dressed. I didn't even wear it to my mom's funeral. I just feel waaaaayy to formal, even though it is a beautiful shortish, one with a lovely defined waistline, and can be worn with jeans. So thank you for releasing me from having to wear that blazer. I shall now return to my cardigans (longer of course). Now I just have to deal with that darn Moto jacket. lol.

    I would love a video on a wardrobe for the caregiver, homebound and everyday casual person. I'm tired of blue jeans. I quit working to care for my Mom and my daughter (a 2 stroke survivor) they both live with me. I got rid of all my work clothes and all I had left were jeans. I never wore anything else. I don't know how to shop for cropped pants that don't make me look funny. I have the basics of the classic pieces, shirts, shoes and accessories. Or maybe I don't. But putting them together is missing something. Maybe more details. I don't know. I do know that I need help. I have no time to really play with my clothes. So I need to get right 1st time around. Really enjoyed this video. Number 5 really resonated with me. At 66, I've lost a fair amount of weight recently, and quite a lot since I bought foundations. In shopping for new clothes, I've definitely come across some things I would have worn before, but not now. In fact, I ordered some of those things to try on at home. (I don't live near much shopping.) I'm ending up returning quite a lot that I loved, but just doesn't feel like me anymore, because of my stage in life, especially having been recently widowed. Sure, I'm in mourning, but that doesn't mean I have to wear all black all of the time. It just means I don't want to stand out too much. I don't want to advertise that I'm available. Not yet anyway. My late husband still holds my heart.

    Ok here’s my 2 cents on the skinny jean debate/dilemma. The skinnies/jeggings were always so tight thru the crotch & rear, like leggings, so I never liked wearing or seeing them unless the top part(s) of the outfit covered or almost covered those areas. The new straights & even slim straights (and boot cut or flares & kick flares) seem to fit less “tightly” through these areas, allowing for a shorter top or jacket, and/or a front tuck or even a full tuck with a belt, while still being modest/decent. So with a mid or high rise, these jeans can even give shorter or petite people a leg-lengthening proportion enhancement. I believe that a slim straight could be tucked into tall boots and would look more modern and would be just enough looser thru crotch/rear as to not require a longer top for modesty/decency. So I am only 5’2.5 but I’m embracing this trend, and updating my belt wardrobe! ☺️

    • @heidimeigs5192
      @heidimeigs5192 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m only 5 ft tall and I have always preferred a straight leg. I don’t wear heels of much height at all so the wide leg or flares don’t work for me. I can wear a bootcut but I live in Alabama so most of the year is too darn hot and humid to wear boots. So the boot cuts only get worn for a short period of the year. I like a straight leg with a white button up and either loafers or ballet flats. I use jewelry and scarves to jazz that look up. It’s rarely inappropriate these days since most of us seem to have adopted a more casual look.

  • @lisaluft520
    @lisaluft520 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I have to respectfully disagree with skinny jeans comment. All the retailers are still carrying all styles of jeans, including straight/jeggings. I think it depends on how you style them. Tall boots are still on trend, especially the tall western style. You can't wear those looser leg jeans. Also if you are doing the trendy more boxy style blazer, you want to avoid volume on the bottom. There are definitely times where skinny jeans are still appropriate. So wear them if you like them. Just make an effort to style them with modern touches.
    I'm 52 and my friends and family say I'm stylish. I watch a lot of fashion videos. It really seems like just about anything can be stylish right now depending on how you put an outfit together.

    • @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms
      @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I absolutely agree that the only jeans you’d want to wear with tall boots would be skinny jeans. And that’s why I have two pair in my closet 😉. But please keep in mind that stores keep selling things they know will sell. Just because something is available doesn’t mean it’s the most current. And can women still look fabulous in skinny jeans? Yes! They’re just not the most modern choice. That’s all I said, that they look a little dated. I didn’t say they were frumpy our bad style. At that point in the video I was simply saying stylish women make at least a few modern choices in their outfits. Which choices is up to the woman. Jeans is just a great and easy choice to make, but you absolutely can wear those skinny jeans and then top them with a trending oversized button up shirt for instance.

    One of my biggest clothing mistakes in the past was being drawn to and buying lots of statement pieces which were designed well but did not resonate with my style/personality. As you say, the clothes wearing you. I am still drawn to these items but think very carefully before buying now.

    I suppose my personal style is mixing feminine with masculine. I enjoy wearing frilly dresses and skirts with a denim or leather jacket. In the summer I wear shorts with light blouses or flowery skirts with a t-shirt. I also like to play with color combinations from opposites of the color wheel. My favorite color combo is deep blue and brown.

    I detest skinny jeans, I opt for my " tried and true ones. " lol.... I don't wear jeans as often as I once did, I wore them so much at certain times, that I'm not interested in wearing them as much. Lol. I prefer skirts, trousers, longer golf skirts , and I always appreciate these videos that remind us to look at certain items to enhance our Own Style and incorporate into our Wardrobe.
    I have ALWAYS been a " Blazer Girl " .... back as far as the 70's, 80s and still today .... ! Thats a signature look for me , even with certain dresses. I was wearing the jeans/ white top / Blazer/ great shoes " combination" since 1976.

    The tip that has been the most important thing for me to learn is dressing for for my body type. (I'm short, pear-shaped, and have a proportionally smaller torso and longer legs.) The only thing I would add to your list is proper undergarments or foundation garments. And some intangibles might be confidence and treating others kindly- not that those are technically "stylish" but when I think of the stylish women I have observed that is part of it. Maybe I am less likely to think of someone as stylish if their actions are negative.

    I always wear hats. When I lost all my hair I found wigs were hot and itchy and I acquired a wardrobe of hats, and my hair is now baby fine and thin so I still wear the hats, and they have become my signature look,
    and one day going to the dermatologist for my annual checkup, I left my hat in the car and three people in that office admonished me "you're supposed to wear a hat!"
    People compliment me on my hats ALL THE TIME. Twice I have had reporters at huge public events take my picture. Then people say "I wish I could wear hats." Anybody can wear hats. Just do it.

      I think that the reason it is-tricky, for ladies to 'find (*decide-on) a signature style,' is because We Like So Many Different Colors-And-Combinations Of Attire/'Wearables" . . . . maybe women are just-as visual as guys are.
      I remember one of my older sisters saying to me (years ago when I shared my enthusiasm of the library book, 'Nothing To Wear'), "I don't ever want to be/feel BOXED IN!"
      ~ That definitely dampened my newly found fashion excitment...that sister had changed so much over the years, from what I remembered when I was very-young 😓 (my friends were in 3 different parts of the country, from being First Generation American, a Veteran, and relocating several times)

    Love your channel and your advice. To add to the discussion --it's all about what is flattering for you for those over 50 (how about 69). I believe a stylish women is one who: 1. is always presentable, whether at home should someone come to the door or for an occasion in public; 2. wears something appropriate for the occasion, her body type and age; 3. wears colors that flatter her coloring; 4. puts together an ensemble with jewelry, clothes and shoes to coordinate with hair and make-up in that flattering color; 5.modern but classic without necessarily being trendy if it suits us. As long as we look "put together" we will look stylish.

    I believe I may have stated this before: I do not follow trends, never have. I have made it my business to find out what suits me and my lifestyle, and I will find items within seasons that appeal and suit - but usually I err on the side of classic, as I take good care of my small wardrobe and wear things for years. I have discovered that Long tops, cardigans and jackets really make my legs look short and fat, so I wear all of these items just below groin level - this is y perfect length. I never wear cropped pants, as they seem to make my legs look short and stubby also! Besides, I do not have the so slender and lovely ankles and feet most American ladies have.....🙂; cropped pants merely draws attention to my fat ankles. No, I do not have a fat pghbia, genetically I have short legs and my ankles swell in our hot sticky summers - really do not need attention drawn to them. I love wearing fit and flare print dresses as this is a cool option that can be dressy with the right shoes and accessories. I also wear mesh or delicate lace cover ups to hide my agin arms....still cool, and stylish, but I believe sensible at 73 years old. While my decorative years are far behind me, stylish is what I do - need to look the part for my profession as a musician and calligrapher, ready for client meetings or setting up to play for a church service or sing at an event. I know that v-necks, u-shaped slightly lower necklines suit me best; I wear beautiful earrings that catch the light but are not super sparkly; the sensible me tells me that now I can only wear and confidently walk in flat or low wedge shoes. I draw attention to my eyes, which are my best feature; my slowly greying hair is also attractive, so I now wear a cheeky long pixie style, that is never 100 percent perfectly done - there is allure and attraction in a slightly less contrived hairstyle! I wear soft colours of eyeshadow, very subtle eyeliner, loads of mascara that is brushed to clump free perfection, draw in soft feathery eyebrows, wear a tiny touch of blush and lipstick two shades darker than my natural lip colour. Thanks for all your tips and encouragements, Kay!

    Great tips. My style is preppy/classic/tailored and every time I have tried to change it up I have realized it was a mistake. So I just try to keep it modern and fresh but true to who I am. I believe that anything exaggerated or in the extreme will always be a fad, not a trend so I stay away from those items. BTW, I find the skinny jeans/wide leg pants thing amusing. I think that the pushback probably means that the skinny jean/narrow silhouette/leggings/jeggings are here to stay and have become a classic. I just spent 3 weeks in Europe and saw no wide leg pants anywhere - just narrow legs everywhere, and Europe is usually ahead of us. Just saying. However, I will take straight leg and slightly bootcut jeans and pants 24/7/365.

      I just saw several videos of people in Italy out shopping. There were many wide-leg pants, mostly on women over 45-50. That said, it's hard to say if they were locals or tourists. In any case, I'm giving wide-leg pants a pass, too, except at home for loungewear. At 5'2", the last thing I want is something that makes me look wider and shorter. It's straight leg and bootcut for me. I really wasn't impressed with how wide-leg trousers look on other women - real women, not models.

    Great tips. I know that this season’s bright colors would just overwhelm me, they don’t suit my soft coloring. Those almost-neon colors are supposed to make us happy, but I would be miserable in neon lime or orange. But, I love staying modern with enduring trends, not fads and will adopt the trends that do work for me. I’m in the blazer camp with you, the tailoring is a woman’s best friend! I always feel dumpy in cardigans, except for the new waist-length V-neck ones. Skinny jeans are completely out of style, especially with a long, baggy tunic over them, it’s a very aging and frumpy look. Don’t get stuck in what you wore 20 years ago!

    Loved this video. I think everyone needs a full length mirror to see the outfit they have picked to wear. It might look good from the front, but from the side or back it is not right. Also, I see so many women wearing casual clothes to run errands or shop and their clothes are way too tight! Like they are wearing the size they wore many years ago, or they picked out something from their daughters’ closet who is 2-3 sizes smaller.
    I agree we need to pick clothes that suit our body shape and size.
