  • Is the Canon 1D Mark IV still worth considering? While I believe it remains relevant, its suitability depends on your specific requirements. In this review, I share my personal and professional insights gathered over 3 years of usage.

    I just picked up a 1D mk.4 as well. I have the 6D currently. Got one in good condition. Has plenty of life in it. Can't wait to try it out.

    Really good video. I watched this before buying a really good used example of the MKIV last June. For years I used a MKII and really enjoyed it, although only 8mp it delivered good shots. But this MKIV is on another level. I'm still getting to grips with it, but find it a really good camera. I know it's now 14 years since release, but to be honest, I'll never use all of it's functions, and I just like the form factor of it, and although it is a huge upgrade from my MKII, it still feels familiar. I recently set it up for back button auto focus, brilliant, and I wonder if you have tried manual with auto ISO. A lot of people seem to advocate this as a good thing, but I think I would limit the maximum to say 6400.

    I originally got 2 of these in 2012 but only in last decade used them a handful of times. I’ve been a lack of confidence lazy photographer. I’ve decided this year to shot every week now using the Mark IVs’. I can’t at present money wise upgrade to a 1DX Mark III for sport so I will settle with these to shoot sport. I hardly understanding the menu settings so I’ve decided to put these through their paces for the next couple of years. Where buffet is concerned it would good to see a video on the compatible memory out there. 16 megapixel isn’t too bad. 1DX Mark III is only 4 megapixels more.

    these pro bodies are all special no matter the age...... they produce results as good as you know photography .....it's plain and simple !!!!! ....I own a Canon 1DS MK III for portraits, a Canon 5DSR for landscapes and weddings and a Canon 1 DX MK III for sports and wildlife...... and they are all considered old cameras......

      I've got a 1DX II that has been my go to for the last two years. It's almost the perfect camera for me although I've been wanting to pick up the 5ds for landscapes or the 5d IV for astrophotography but my 1DX II has been my one size fits all solution

    Hi. Thanks for the review. I've bought a used Canon 1DIV from B&H recently having 46k shutter count. Plan to use it for wildlife photography. Currently using 7D. The new beast will arrive early December. I live in South Asia.
    Now, may I request you for some advanced tips to get the best out of 1DIV? Soon I may embark on a difficult but exciting wildlife safari along the Himalayas in India. My lenses are EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II and EF 400mm f/5.6. Always use extenders with the 2.8 lens.

    Have you flimed anything with it? If so would you recommend it for a beginning videographer?

    • @AleksUsovich
      @AleksUsovich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've filmed quite a bit with it, you can search my channel for "1D IV" and some video will pop up that I've captured with it. I wouldn't recommend it for video even for those who are amateur or semi-professional due to a few nuances.
      The first being that you are capped out at 1080P @ 30fps - occasionally problematic since everything is in 4K now and shooting at 1080p gives you no room to crop. The second problems is that there is no autofocus in video- well no servo focus anyways. This means that you will need to hold down the shutter button to focus during parts of the video (not continuously focus) which causes the exposure to change and the camera begins to hunt for focus. No chance of shooting anything moving like birds, sports, or people unless shooting at f/22 or as closed down as possible. You'd mostly either be manually focusing or shooting something that doesn't move which is a huge drawback. While you can add an external mic, you can't mess with the levels too much in camera making it sort of useless. Plus does not have a headphone jack to check sound that you are recording. If you have the 1D IV and absolutely had to use it for videography, it can be done but there are far superior options such as the T8i, SL3, 90D. Even the T6i or 70D record in 1080p but have the servo autofocus which focuses for you making it a far better option.

      @@AleksUsovich Thanks for answering my question so quick that is super helpful! Do you have a camera you would recommend for videography? I really wanna get into weddings and I am having a hard time finding something that would be good and affordable since I am a beginner.

    • @AleksUsovich
      @AleksUsovich  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ryleehaslam1883 I'd probably start with the T5i or 60D/70D especially if on a budget. You don't need anything super fancy for starting out until you learn more about photography and get to know the camera really well. You should typically upgrade only when you've outgrown the camera or you need something that it can't provide. I've shot a T3i for about 4 years when I was starting out before outgrowing it and going to a 50D, then a 5D Mark II with a 1D IV. And now have a 1DX II that I'll probably own for the next 10 or so years.
      If you don't have any lenses already, you can get a decent mirrorless camera that will do video work much better than a DSLR, like a Fujifilm or Sony mirrorless camera. I'm "stuck" with Canon DSLRs since I've got quite a few thousand dollars invested into their L lenses and would probably have gone a different route if I didn't have so many lenses.

    Hi buddy. How about creating a new video on this great DSLR for the current period. This is my main camera for wildlife photography and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Because from this camera, I get everything I need from an action camera. Talking about still photography exclusively, not interested in videos. Producing meaningful videos is a totally different ball-game altogether that I don't want to get into.
    I've tried a wonderful setup with this great camera. Stacked two version III extenders 1.4x and 2x and joined them through an extension tube as they don't attach with each other. Installed the combo on EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II. So, on the 1DIV the focal length reached 1092mm i.e., 1100mm approximately. But the AF was lost through viewfinder. Surprisingly, a slow AF is available on live view. But how to use it outdoors as the LCD is never comfortably legible in natural light!
    One solution is using a hooded loupe. I don't have it at this moment however, now I use a black fabric covering the camera and my head. This gives me a good view of the live view display and achieve focus.
    Kindly think about my proposal above. Thanks.

      Hi, unfortunately this will be the only video about this camera as I no longer own it and have since upgraded to the Canon 1DX II. The 1D IV will only be able to use one teleconverter unless you modify it like you have done. However the quality you will be getting will not be good as all. One teleconverter with that lens reduces quality noticably. Two teleconverter plus the extension tubes must make the quality very poor. You might have the same quality as just cropping in when using the 300mm and 2x teleconverter.

      @quazisanjeed6395 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AleksUsovich I did it on experimental basis being aware of the quality drop. However, for record shots of distant subjects; this is a good solution. Tried it on my full frame 5DIII also same way, it works. I was interested in one of the 1Dx bodies but, received a used 5DIII recently from my son as gift which appears to be a good alternative to a 1Dx. The burst rate is not as fast but it's ok with me. IQ is great.
      Generally, I use these two cameras with 300mm 2.8 + 2x for bird photography only.
      May be I'll create a short video myself on 1DIV and my other darling 5D Classic, my digital film camera.
      Thanks again buddy.
