When I saw this title, I laughed and thought "This should be interesting!". I was a Rams fan in the 70s and I remember how frustrating they were. The Super Bowl against the Steelers was a good game for 3 quarters despite the final score.
Roman Gabriel was a beast regardless of any statistics, he threw sweet passes and was big and tough. His games against Green Bay and Baltimore were games not to be missed.

Biggest Ram mistake was giving up on Jaws so fast and going with Haden. If you look at what Jaws did from 78-82, he was one of the top QBs in the NFL. Assuming that level of play would have carried over had he stayed in LA, Rams would have been a much better team.
I agree - they drafted him 37th overall in the '73 draft, so they should have given him a much longer look. They only started him three games in three years.

The Rams and Steelers I think were mirror teams of each other. Man for man, I believe the roster was almost equal. The Rams were Uber talented except for one thing. The Steelers had Terry Bradshaw. In the NFC, Dallas had Roger Staubach and the Vikings had Fran Tarkenton. The Rams were probably the best team at least in the NFC except for one position. Quarterback. It was a glaring weakness come playoff time. I believe if the Rams had a Bert Jones or a Joe Ferguson in the mid 70s, they are at least a SB team. The guys they had simply couldn’t get it done and when they finally found a guy ( Vince Ferragamo) the team was past its prime and old. Still they gave Pitt all it could handle in SB14
Bradshaw was not a forgone conclusion to be successful in his early years in Pittsburgh he struggled immensely and he was always at odds with Chuck Knoll.
I'll forever remember the Monday night game with Namath vs the Bears. It was difficult to watch. Whatever greatness that had been in that arm was gone. It reminded me of praying for an over-the-hill Willie Mays to simply catch a fly ball in the '73 Series. Time catches up to everyone.
The Rams were up at halftime in that Super Bowl. Ferragamo threw a bad pick and Stallworth beat Rod Perry over the middle for the long TD that put the Steelers ahead. I was heartbroken.
True and I think Dick Enberg coined that phrase in a season highlight back before it happened. But as we age, we get caught, and this clip proves it. I like that it was added in because as great as Snow was, the urban legend did not age well.
I notice in this highlights reel at around 11:40 the play was at Candlestick Park's artificial turf. I had an opportunity to walk on that turf back in the 1970s: It was a thin carpet on concrete. I was shocked and appalled that the players had to play on a surface that hard. Makes one wonder how many players' careers were shortened with such a harsh field of play.
I'm surprised that the Players Association didn't succeed (maybe they didn't try) in negotiating the "outlawing" of artificial turf. A lot of unnecessary pain and suffering occurred on account of playing on it.
Roman Gabriel appeared in Gilligan's Island and was Blue Boy in The Undefeated starring John Wayne. Roman went on to become the 1973 NFL Comeback Player of the Year with the Philadelphia Eagles. It's a crime that he's not in NFL Hall of Fame. He would flourish in today's passing game. 1969 NFL MVP ROMAN GABRIEL!
when i was a tiny little 70's yoot, Roman Gabriel/Snow were my first sports heroes. My dad and older brother were Niner/John Brody fans and when I saw them playing the Rams on TV one day I said hey who's that with the cool helmets. My dad said that's the LA Rams we don't root for them in this house and I said lol bro we do now.
Nice. The only players that I really remember are those from 50 years ago. Maybe it was being a kid and not having to deal with life as an adult. I had a lot of free time on my hands and used to read great players of the NFL series of books.
My dad was the Rams team dentist in the late 60’-70’s and he had season tickets at the Coliseum on the 50yd line. Jonathan Winters sat right behind us.
When the Rams were headed to the Super Bowl to play the Steelers, I jokingly asked my mother who she thought was going to win (she never watched football and knew nothing about it). She said "the Rams." When I asked her why, she said "because they have nice hats."🤣😏
I like both the blue-and-whites of 1964-72 and the blue-and-golds of 1973-99. I'd like for them to go back to the latter permanently, but I would also be fine with the blue-and-white.
QB play was a difference maker between the Rams &:other dominant teams of the 70s. Others were offering Staubach & Tarkenton. (Along w Bradshaw, Greise, &:Stabler in the AFC.) The Rams QBs of the era had some merits but didn't measure up overall.
Ram fan agrees 100% with you. We despised Roger and Tark especially because we would lose to them every time. Huge respect for both. Coaching is the other reason. LA coaches were all ok and nice guys, but Bud Grant & Tom Landry were miles ahead of them.
The "Ground Chuck" offensive mentality limited the Rams in the play-offs against those teams you alluded to, in my opinion. They didn't catch anyone of guard whereby the Cowboys always used at least a couple of gadget plays every game.
Good point. Once a team falls behind a touchdown or two, having to take 6-8 minutes off the clock to score a touchdown via mostly the running game makes those late-game comebacks near-impossible. This acute lack of late-game, hurry-up offense mastery, that could score a lot of points in a hurry, kept them one step behind the premiere teams of the era who'd mastered the art, and prevented them from winning a lot of big games in the post-season. The Rams should not have moved on from James "Shack" Harris...He was clearly the most physically gifted QB after QB Roman Gabriel...However...the NFL was still struggling with the so-called delimma of determining if black men could handle the complex template of the NFL QB position...The Rams should have also held on to young QB Ron Jaworski...He ended up being a very good QB for the Philadelphia Eagles for much of the 1980s and he led the Eagles to the SB after the 1980 NFL season...
I agree with you on both accounts. They gave up on Jaworski far too soon and they received an evidently non-focused Charle Young in return for him. Young couldn't even start for L.A. Terry Nelson was predominately the starting Tight End. Young only started 3 games in 3 years for the Rams. That was an awful trade for them
For that era, Shack was a big QB. Today, he would be average size. The Rams of that era were too quick to pull the plug on certain QB's (Harris, Jaworski) and held on to QB's past their prime (Namath, Gabriel), although they got a decent package for Gabriel. I wish they would have kept Shack and Jaworski and traded Haden. (I think they kept Haden because he was a local guy and smart, not necessarily because of his ability.) They might have gone to a Super Bowl before 14.
I agree with your assessments. If they had been able to trade Haden, I'm sure they wouldn't have garnered much interest due to his size and sub-par arm strength, in my opinion......but then again the Packers gave up a boatload for an aged John Hadl.
@@markgardner9460they would have been fortunate to get even a late round pick for him. Most teams would have seen him as a backup QB at best. While he had below average arm strength and was short, he was able to have a fairly decent career, with his final season coinciding with Eric Dickerson's rookie season. I imagine handing the ball off to ED didn't suck at all!
He switched back to #18 in 1975 or '76. He probably wore #5 when he got to Philadelphia because wide receiver Ben Hawkins wore #18 and Gabriel probably did not wank to make Hawkins give up his number.
When I was in grade school & high school, my dad would take me to see Gabe and the Rams at the Coliseum. Great memories! I think this video supports what I’ve always believed - that the owners’ quick fix approach to the QB situation doomed the QBs’ and the team’s chances. I think it’s much more likely that it was the owners’ ineptitude that was the problem, rather than the statistical improbability that not a single one of these quarterbacks could’ve been the winner that the Rams needed. It would be interesting to compare how many quarterbacks other teams went through during the same period. It was at the end of the 70s when I got so disgusted with the quarterback musical chairs, that I gave up on the Rams.
Very cool video!!! I grew up in Southern California a HUGE Ram fan. I was 4 in 1970, and when you're growing up, those playoff losses were killers!! Always had a great defense and o-line/running game, but couldn't get a guy to make those plays when you needed them. Then, we finally got there with Ferragame who played very well against the Steelers, until he threw that fateful pick to Lambert inside the Steeler 30 looking to go up 26-24. Knew this was going to be good when dude who narrated it showed himself in Merlin Olsen jersey! Nice touch showing the football cards and purpled out Rams helmets!!!

I Started watching football in the middle 70's. The Rams were my first Favorite Team. The roster of players they had was so Solid, Especially on Defense and the OL, that had they had a Quarterback like Staubach, Tarkington, Stabler or Bradshaw they would have won Multiple Super Bowls.

This is awesome! My first NFL memories are of #18 Roman Gabriel and the the 1969 MVP year. I was sad when he was traded to the Eagles. But I quickly came to appreciate Hadl and his connection with Harold Jackson a couple of years later. Thank you for this video and a walk down memory lane.

Hadl was acquired from the Chargers before Gabriel was dealt. In fact, Gabriel did not want to compete for the starting job. Harris was ponderous reading coverages, Jaworski could not stay healthy when his opportunities arose. Harris started the 37-7 loss to Dallas and was pulled in the early stages after throwing an UGLY pick which set the blowout in motion.
@@stuartdollar9912 Yeah, that's why he won NFC Player of the Year in 1973. He was "washed up" after sustaining a back injury in the sixth game that season, after which his level of play declined, though he was so sensational prior to that point that he still won that award.

Started playing and watching football in 1968, had to pick a team as my favorite and in 1969 picked the Los Angeles Rams because of number 18 Roman Gabriel and the fearsome foursome. Yes I'm still a Ram 🐏 Fan!@
The Vikings and Cowboys took turns knocking the Rams out of the Playoffs in those days. With one glaring reason which this presentation shows. Being solid at QB. The Rams had some impressive defenses and run games. But Dallas and Minnesota also had those. And they also had Roger Staubach and Fran Tarkenton. And when they went to the Super Bowl. They lose to Terry Bradshaw. The Rams learned a hard lesson. It's hard to win the big games without a solid foundation at the most important position in the game.
@@markgardner9460 Think of this pattern. 1969 Rams knocked out by Vikings, 1973, by Cowboys, 1974, Vikings, 1975, Cowboys, 1976 & 77, Vikings, 1978 Cowboys. I think the Vikes did the Rams a favor beating them in the Mud in 77. The Cowboys were ready for LA after losing to them in 76. They had to wait a year to shut them out 28-0 to settle that score.

7/17/72: he got it for no apparent reason - complained about chest pain while warming up in training camp. Unitas actually punctured his lung with shattered ribs that occurred during a game & he was back in action in only 3 weeks.
Thanks for the video. I was 3 in 1970, but I remember Gabriel and all these qbs. Also, I remember heartbreak every year from 7 straight divisional titles but not SBs. Losing every year to either Dallas or Minnesota in the playoffs. I hated stauback and tarkington. Ironically, our defense was not as good, but we finally made it to a SB with Faragamo. I never considered that season the same as the 70s teams.
It's interesting how watching football games as a very young child can stick in our memories, whereas other activities/events do not. I guess that's the power of old school football. Thanks for watching and commenting!
These were the best Rams’ uniforms (from the early 70’s) along with the helmets, bar none. Love the Blue ones as well. They should get rid of that garbage they wear now and go back to these. Simple and awesome.
Dempsey, the long-time holder of the record for the longest FG as a Saint. Note he only had half of his kicking foot. I didn't remember he also kicked for the Rams. 13:22
The Bills made Harris the first black player to start a season at quarterback in NFL history & second black player in the modern era to start in any game as quarterback. Haven Moses started a game for Denver in ‘68 I believe. Harris’s nickname in Buffalo was 30 30 rifle, because of the strong arm he had! Farragamo played with Buffalo in ‘85. My favorite in LA was Roman Gabriel! I thought he was the best out of all the guys mentioned. Love the old black & white uniforms too! Jaworski grew up right outside of Buffalo, the Polish rifle!
I thought then and I think now that the Rams should have stuck with Ron Jaworski. He was no Hall of Famer, but might just have provided the QB stability needed for the Rams to be a Super Bowl team.
Mark I was 8-9 years old from New York and loved Joe Namath, couldn’t have been happier when we picked him up, couldn’t have been more disappointed as it went. I remember hearing or reading how Haden out played Namath in training camp but Knox went with the veteran, which he should have, just a year or two and a surgery or two late
I think that I was confusing him with O.J.'s contract situation with the Bills. They gave him a boatload of cash in order to quell his trade demands and that kept him happy for a little while.

@@JeromyBranch The Rams were so fearsome in the 60's they were wearing out in the 70's. Besides that front four they had Jack Pardee and Maxie Baughn plus underrated safety Ed Meador who were tough old veterans.
That QB merry-go-round hindered the Rams and kept them from winning the big games in crunch time. Vince Ferragamo (15) came the closest - had me believing for a while there. Even in ‘82, the Rams signed Bert Jones (7), so it continued into the eighties.
Great music. Perfect for the era. And take note that this was the pre-gloves era on receivers. Therefore, passes were caught against the body whenever possible rather than the [gloved] hands-only method of today.
The same could be said of the Vikings who played in a very weak division, too, however both the Rams and the Vikings were solid teams who played the Cowboys tough for the most part.
The 70s were incredibly frustrating for Rams fans. That inconsistent QB play squandered a great team on both sides of the ball....except the QB position. In '77, Knox made a mistake not putting Namath in that "mud bowl" loss to the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs. Haden's hand was too small to grip the ball in the muck. Namath would've been much better based on the size of his hands and experience. He might've gotten the win.

Great video! I wonder if your question at the end " Still looking for a quarterback to get the Lombardi Trophy" would be to " Wait 15 years, leave town and pick up a supermarket stock clerk as a free agent". Their starting QBs in the 1980s weren't any better for chrissakes.
Did they hit the jackpot with Warner or what? Unreal luck. Dieter Brock? A washed up Dan Pastorini? A physically spent Bert Jones? Their '80's QB's were worse. Ferragamo was in that mix, too.
Vince Ferragamo actually had a very good 1980 season, statistically, throwing for IIRC, 30 TD's and lead Rams to a WC appearance where they lost to perennial 1970's bully Dallas. But even though they had an early post-season exit in 1980, the team, roster, and the one position that had never been filled and was a causal primary factor in why they never beat teams like Minnesota, Dallas, or later on, San Francisco, seemed to be gelling. Then Ferragamo either got greedy, or made a bad business decision by going to play in the CFL for two seasons and there reverted to being a complete bust. Warren Moon, when interviewed many years later and asked his opinion about Ferragamo's time in the CFL when he played Moon's Edmonton Eskimos, and Moon essentially replied that Ferragamo stuck up the place and that every time his Eskimoes played Ferragamo's squad, they totally wiped the floor with them. Moon also insinuated that if a former SB-starting QB could defect to the CFL for more money and regress in his development so badly that he looked worse in Canada than he ever did, stateside why was a former All-American QB and CFL All-Star like Moon still having to bust his ass for 5 seasons just to get NFL scouts, GM's to pay attention to him and give him a halfway-decent chance. Ferragamo bolting for the CFL after the 1980 season essentially put the Rams QB position into same musical chairs carousel for another 5 years until Jim Everett finally became something of a tangible, franchise QB. If the old L.A. Rams had had a competent, above-average QB to complement Eric Dickerson and a still-dominant, strong defense, lets say, someone like Tommy Kramer, Steve Grogan or Dave Krieg, they likely wouldve accomplished more.
At first look, Ferragamo's yardage total looks impressive (for 1980), but he was actually 15th in the NFL. His 30 td's, however, was second best and his completion percentage ninth best. I had heard that he wanted more money and the Rams wouldn't meet his request. Thank you for your comments - much appreciated.
Although he played in 3 games for the Rams in '79, he didn't start any, so that is why I did not include him in this video - only starting QB's are featured.
Well done the video had excellent flow! 3 of these QBs are Hall of Very Good - Gabriel, Hadl, Jaworski. I have compared Gabriel to Hadl as they are exact contemporaries- which one did you think was better? I give the slight edge to Gabriel.
Hadl had a far worse td/int ratio than Gabriel which can be attributed to his penchant for throwing deep on a regular basis. That is the only glaring difference to me, so I give the edge to Gabe.
The fact that the Rams made the playoffs so many consecutive years with such a revolving door at quarterback is absolutely amazing!.I attribute a large part of it to the defense obviously and Chuck Knox did a excellent job but the most surprising thing about that is neither George Allen or Knox got them to a Super Bowl,but Ray Malavasi did in 1979...
James Harris was great and I dont understand why we let him go but the best QB we ever had was Jim Everett. If we had gotten him in the early 70s,we would have won a Super Bowl or two that decade.
6:21: That trade was probably a Win Win for both teams. Rams: Jackson had a dynamite year in 1973. 13 TDs, a Pro Bowler and finished 3rd in the MVP voting ( guess what 2,000 yard running back won it?). He was a solid 35-50 reception a year WR for the Rams from 1973-1977. The 1975 1st pick Dennis Harrah was 12 year starter and 6 time Pro Bowler at guard. The 1974 first pick was Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti who had a meh career, starting at fullback for 3 years but not worth his draft position. Eagles: Gabriel rebounded with a stellar in 1973 year with 23 TD passes and another Pro Bowl. Though he didn't back it up after that it started a renaissance that led to the hiring of Dick Vermeil in 1976 and an eventual Super Bowl 4 years later that was a God Send for the long suffering Eagles fans.
Good stuff - my 1973 first round draft video goes into detail regarding the Gabriel trade. Harold Jackson belongs in the Hall of Fame and some people think that Harrah is deserving as well.
I played “Pop Warner” football in 1971 and there was a kid on my team named Robin Gabriel. Yes, it was Romans son. Living with his mom at the time because she was divorced he was from a broken family, I was too. The thing that struck me then, as of now, he father NEVER came to one single game or practice. Everyone on our team wanted to meet his dad but he never showed up. Great role model right?

Amazing compare and contrast. I don't know what they were looking for, all would be schemed differently. The Bridesmaids 70-71 were good teams - Snow, Rentzel, Ellison and that "D". I remember the SB team, Ferragamo was seeing ghosts, the Steel Curtain put a whippin' on him. Yeah, very good teams but not enough to elevate to a title...Billy Waddy sighting a CU Buff. Everybody in sports media said Ferragamo was outpassing Bradshaw first 3 quarters and he was. The game had four lead changes Steel Curtain put a whippin on nobody. In desperation, they had to injure Wendall Tyler on purpose because he was breaking off long runs and he was hurting them badly. On a number of occasions they are are trying to rip his helmet off after the whistle and never flagged. Steel curtain had no answer to him until then. It was completely different compared to SB 13 where Steelers led start to finish and shut Dorsett down.
I agree with you on all points except regarding the one about Dorsett. I thought he ran well in the first half, but then they cut back on the amount of carries in the second half. He finished with 16 carries for 96 yards with a long run of 29 yards.
@@martinishot I don't know if the Steelers purposely tried to hurt Tyler, they played tough defense they didn't have to cheap shot anybody. They made every team pay for yardage. That was a decent SB. I have no skin in the game I admit that I'm a Bronco fan. Thanks, I value others takes.

What happened to Tyler after blown whistles I have never seen since and that says a lot considering super bowls do have a more let em play approach. I watched the handling of Tony Dorsett one year prior and its night and day.
As a Falcons fan I remember a game where the Rams won like 58-0 and Harris, Haden, and Jaworski all threw TD's. Rams brought in Steve Bartkowski in the 80's at the end of his career with shot knees just like Broadway Joe. Life in the 70's for a Rams QB must have been a lot of fun outside of the stadium.
Yes, 59 to nothing in the second to last week of the '76 season. Bartkowski was injured and did not play in that game. The Rams also brought in Dan Pastorini in the '80's when he was shot, too. They really had a merry-go-round of QB's.

This reminds me of my favorite team the Bears, who had a number of revolving door of quarterbacks in the 1970's and even in subsequent years. The difference between the two teams is the Rams had good quarterbacks whereas the Bears had at that position players who were not so good or mediocre at the best. 7:31

As an old man that grew up watching 1970's football, the Rams QBs, particularly once Gabriel declined, were a forgettable grab bag of retreads, has-beens, and never-weres. If the Rams had say Bert Jones, they'd have been the dynasty of the 1970s, and not Pittsburgh. The rest of the team was that good, and their quarterbacks that bad.
I agree - Jones needed a stronger defense in order to get to and compete for a Super Bowl win...and the Rams had that super strong defense that would have allowed them to get over the hump. Thank you for watching and commenting.

The Rams and Steelers I think were mirror teams of each other. Man for man, I believe the roster was almost equal. The Rams were Uber talented except for one thing. The Steelers had Terry Bradshaw. In the NFC, Dallas had Roger Staubach and the Vikings had Fran Tarkenton. The Rams were probably the best team at least in the NFC except for one position. Quarterback. It was a glaring weakness come playoff time. I believe if the Rams had a Bert Jones or a Joe Ferguson in the mid 70s, they are at least a SB team. The guys they had simply couldn’t get it done and when they finally found a guy ( Vince Ferragamo) the team was past its prime and old. Still they gave Pitt all it could handle in SB14

I'll forever remember the Monday night game with Namath vs the Bears. It was difficult to watch. Whatever greatness that had been in that arm was gone. It reminded me of praying for an over-the-hill Willie Mays to simply catch a fly ball in the '73 Series. Time catches up to everyone.
I remember the tv announcers speaking of Mays' misplay like it was yesterday. He had totally lost his grace.
Any QB that showed any promise ended up in Philly.
That sums it up extremely well.
The Rams were up at halftime in that Super Bowl. Ferragamo threw a bad pick and Stallworth beat Rod Perry over the middle for the long TD that put the Steelers ahead. I was heartbroken.

He was an All-America in '76 and The Sporting News College Player of the Year. I remember watching him play on tv that year.
Gabriel was the QB when I became a fan in 1970. All of these QBs are very memorable.

True and I think Dick Enberg coined that phrase in a season highlight back before it happened. But as we age, we get caught, and this clip proves it. I like that it was added in because as great as Snow was, the urban legend did not age well.

I notice in this highlights reel at around 11:40 the play was at Candlestick Park's artificial turf.
I had an opportunity to walk on that turf back in the 1970s: It was a thin carpet on concrete.
I was shocked and appalled that the players had to play on a surface that hard.
Makes one wonder how many players' careers were shortened with such a harsh field of play.
I'm surprised that the Players Association didn't succeed (maybe they didn't try) in negotiating the "outlawing" of artificial turf. A lot of unnecessary pain and suffering occurred on account of playing on it.
Roman Gabriel appeared in Gilligan's Island and was Blue Boy in The Undefeated starring John Wayne. Roman went on to become the 1973 NFL Comeback Player of the Year with the Philadelphia Eagles. It's a crime that he's not in NFL Hall of Fame. He would flourish in today's passing game. 1969 NFL MVP ROMAN GABRIEL!

when i was a tiny little 70's yoot, Roman Gabriel/Snow were my first sports heroes. My dad and older brother were Niner/John Brody fans and when I saw them playing the Rams on TV one day I said hey who's that with the cool helmets. My dad said that's the LA Rams we don't root for them in this house and I said lol bro we do now.

Yes, I do. I loved watching that game. The last one was "rained out", strangely. Roger Staubach received a concussion in the 1972 game.

Nice. The only players that I really remember are those from 50 years ago. Maybe it was being a kid and not having to deal with life as an adult. I had a lot of free time on my hands and used to read great players of the NFL series of books.
I enjoyed all of those NFL Library books in the series as a kid so much that I bought all of them as an adult. It brings back a lot of good memories.

I like both the blue-and-whites of 1964-72 and the blue-and-golds of 1973-99. I'd like for them to go back to the latter permanently, but I would also be fine with the blue-and-white.
QB play was a difference maker between the Rams &:other dominant teams of the 70s. Others were offering Staubach & Tarkenton. (Along w Bradshaw, Greise, &:Stabler in the AFC.) The Rams QBs of the era had some merits but didn't measure up overall.

Coaching is the other reason. LA coaches were all ok and nice guys, but Bud Grant & Tom Landry were miles ahead of them.
The "Ground Chuck" offensive mentality limited the Rams in the play-offs against those teams you alluded to, in my opinion. They didn't catch anyone of guard whereby the Cowboys always used at least a couple of gadget plays every game.
Good point. Once a team falls behind a touchdown or two, having to take 6-8 minutes off the clock to score a touchdown via mostly the running game makes those late-game comebacks near-impossible. This acute lack of late-game, hurry-up offense mastery, that could score a lot of points in a hurry, kept them one step behind the premiere teams of the era who'd mastered the art, and prevented them from winning a lot of big games in the post-season. The Rams should not have moved on from James "Shack" Harris...He was clearly the most physically gifted QB after QB Roman Gabriel...However...the NFL was still struggling with the so-called delimma of determining if black men could handle the complex template of the NFL QB position...The Rams should have also held on to young QB Ron Jaworski...He ended up being a very good QB for the Philadelphia Eagles for much of the 1980s and he led the Eagles to the SB after the 1980 NFL season...
I agree with you on both accounts. They gave up on Jaworski far too soon and they received an evidently non-focused Charle Young in return for him. Young couldn't even start for L.A. Terry Nelson was predominately the starting Tight End. Young only started 3 games in 3 years for the Rams. That was an awful trade for them
For that era, Shack was a big QB. Today, he would be average size. The Rams of that era were too quick to pull the plug on certain QB's (Harris, Jaworski) and held on to QB's past their prime (Namath, Gabriel), although they got a decent package for Gabriel. I wish they would have kept Shack and Jaworski and traded Haden. (I think they kept Haden because he was a local guy and smart, not necessarily because of his ability.) They might have gone to a Super Bowl before 14.
I agree with your assessments. If they had been able to trade Haden, I'm sure they wouldn't have garnered much interest due to his size and sub-par arm strength, in my opinion......but then again the Packers gave up a boatload for an aged John Hadl.
@@markgardner9460they would have been fortunate to get even a late round pick for him. Most teams would have seen him as a backup QB at best. While he had below average arm strength and was short, he was able to have a fairly decent career, with his final season coinciding with Eric Dickerson's rookie season. I imagine handing the ball off to ED didn't suck at all!
I seem to recall that Haden would throw a pick at crucial times in big games. He was a fine runner, however.

I think this video supports what I’ve always believed - that the owners’ quick fix approach to the QB situation doomed the QBs’ and the team’s chances.
I think it’s much more likely that it was the owners’ ineptitude that was the problem, rather than the statistical improbability that not a single one of these quarterbacks could’ve been the winner that the Rams needed. It would be interesting to compare how many quarterbacks other teams went through during the same period.
It was at the end of the 70s when I got so disgusted with the quarterback musical chairs, that I gave up on the Rams.
The knee-jerk, quick-fix approach rarely works. I think they should have given the reins to Jaworski and stayed with him.

Very cool video!!! I grew up in Southern California a HUGE Ram fan. I was 4 in 1970, and when you're growing up, those playoff losses were killers!! Always had a great defense and o-line/running game, but couldn't get a guy to make those plays when you needed them. Then, we finally got there with Ferragame who played very well against the Steelers, until he threw that fateful pick to Lambert inside the Steeler 30 looking to go up 26-24. Knew this was going to be good when dude who narrated it showed himself in Merlin Olsen jersey! Nice touch showing the football cards and purpled out Rams helmets!!!

Coolest name in NFL history
I Started watching football in the middle 70's. The Rams were my first Favorite Team. The roster of players they had was so Solid, Especially on Defense and the OL, that had they had a Quarterback like Staubach, Tarkington, Stabler or Bradshaw they would have won Multiple Super Bowls.

This is awesome! My first NFL memories are of #18 Roman Gabriel and the the 1969 MVP year. I was sad when he was traded to the Eagles. But I quickly came to appreciate Hadl and his connection with Harold Jackson a couple of years later. Thank you for this video and a walk down memory lane.

Hadl was acquired from the Chargers before Gabriel was dealt. In fact, Gabriel did not want to compete for the starting job. Harris was ponderous reading coverages, Jaworski could not stay
healthy when his opportunities arose. Harris started the 37-7 loss to Dallas and was pulled in the early stages after throwing an UGLY pick which set the blowout in motion.
Saw that 37-7 blowout it was CBS second game, didn't have a dog in the fight I was a Falcons fan.
Hadl was washed up by the time he came to the Rams.
@@stuartdollar9912 Yeah, that's why he won NFC Player of the Year in 1973. He was "washed up" after sustaining a back injury in the sixth game that season, after which his level of play declined, though he was so sensational prior to that point that he still won that award.

The Vikings and Cowboys took turns knocking the Rams out of the Playoffs in those days. With one glaring reason which this presentation shows. Being solid at QB. The Rams had some impressive defenses and run games. But Dallas and Minnesota also had those. And they also had Roger Staubach and Fran Tarkenton. And when they went to the Super Bowl. They lose to Terry Bradshaw. The Rams learned a hard lesson. It's hard to win the big games without a solid foundation at the most important position in the game.
The Rams either had QB's which were nearing or at the end of the line or way too young to get them over the hump.
@@markgardner9460 Think of this pattern. 1969 Rams knocked out by Vikings, 1973, by Cowboys, 1974, Vikings, 1975, Cowboys, 1976 & 77, Vikings, 1978 Cowboys.
I think the Vikes did the Rams a favor beating them in the Mud in 77. The Cowboys were ready for LA after losing to them in 76. They had to wait a year to shut them out 28-0 to settle that score.
The Rams always peaked too soon. Plus they were a bit too predictable on offense.

7/17/72: he got it for no apparent reason - complained about chest pain while warming up in training camp. Unitas actually punctured his lung with shattered ribs that occurred during a game & he was back in action in only 3 weeks.
Thanks for the video. I was 3 in 1970, but I remember Gabriel and all these qbs. Also, I remember heartbreak every year from 7 straight divisional titles but not SBs. Losing every year to either Dallas or Minnesota in the playoffs. I hated stauback and tarkington. Ironically, our defense was not as good, but we finally made it to a SB with Faragamo. I never considered that season the same as the 70s teams.
It's interesting how watching football games as a very young child can stick in our memories, whereas other activities/events do not. I guess that's the power of old school football. Thanks for watching and commenting!
These were the best Rams’ uniforms (from the early 70’s) along with the helmets, bar none. Love the Blue ones as well. They should get rid of that garbage they wear now and go back to these. Simple and awesome.

The Bills made Harris the first black player to start a season at quarterback in NFL history & second black player in the modern era to start in any game as quarterback. Haven Moses started a game for Denver in ‘68 I believe. Harris’s nickname in Buffalo was 30 30 rifle, because of the strong arm he had! Farragamo played with Buffalo in ‘85. My favorite in LA was Roman Gabriel! I thought he was the best out of all the guys mentioned. Love the old black & white uniforms too! Jaworski grew up right outside of Buffalo, the Polish rifle!
Marlin Briscoe was the Broncos QB, but he was turned into a WR
Don Criqui pronounced Jaworski's name "ya-WAR-ski", but I think he was the onky announcer who accurately pronounced it.

I thought then and I think now that the Rams should have stuck with Ron Jaworski. He was no Hall of Famer, but might just have provided the QB stability needed for the Rams to be a Super Bowl team.

I think that I was confusing him with O.J.'s contract situation with the Bills. They gave him a boatload of cash in order to quell his trade demands and that kept him happy for a little while.
Rams defense is what won all those games. They always had a decent d.

That QB merry-go-round hindered the Rams and kept them from winning the big games in crunch time. Vince Ferragamo (15) came the closest - had me believing for a while there. Even in ‘82, the Rams signed Bert Jones (7), so it continued into the eighties.

Great music. Perfect for the era. And take note that this was the pre-gloves era on receivers. Therefore, passes were caught against the body whenever possible rather than the [gloved] hands-only method of today.

The reason the Rams went to the playoffs so much was they were in the same division as the Saints, Falcons and 49ers in the 70s.
The same could be said of the Vikings who played in a very weak division, too, however both the Rams and the Vikings were solid teams who played the Cowboys tough for the most part.

The 70s were incredibly frustrating for Rams fans. That inconsistent QB play squandered a great team on both sides of the ball....except the QB position. In '77, Knox made a mistake not putting Namath in that "mud bowl" loss to the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs. Haden's hand was too small to grip the ball in the muck. Namath would've been much better based on the size of his hands and experience. He might've gotten the win.

Did they hit the jackpot with Warner or what? Unreal luck. Dieter Brock? A washed up Dan Pastorini? A physically spent Bert Jones? Their '80's QB's were worse. Ferragamo was in that mix, too.
Vince Ferragamo actually had a very good 1980 season, statistically, throwing for IIRC, 30 TD's and lead Rams to a WC appearance where they lost to perennial 1970's bully Dallas. But even though they had an early post-season exit in 1980, the team, roster, and the one position that had never been filled and was a causal primary factor in why they never beat teams like Minnesota, Dallas, or later on, San Francisco, seemed to be gelling. Then Ferragamo either got greedy, or made a bad business decision by going to play in the CFL for two seasons and there reverted to being a complete bust. Warren Moon, when interviewed many years later and asked his opinion about Ferragamo's time in the CFL when he played Moon's Edmonton Eskimos, and Moon essentially replied that Ferragamo stuck up the place and that every time his Eskimoes played Ferragamo's squad, they totally wiped the floor with them.
Moon also insinuated that if a former SB-starting QB could defect to the CFL for more money and regress in his development so badly that he looked worse in Canada than he ever did, stateside why was a former All-American QB and CFL All-Star like Moon still having to bust his ass for 5 seasons just to get NFL scouts, GM's to pay attention to him and give him a halfway-decent chance.
Ferragamo bolting for the CFL after the 1980 season essentially put the Rams QB position into same musical chairs carousel for another 5 years until Jim Everett finally became something of a tangible, franchise QB.
If the old L.A. Rams had had a competent, above-average QB to complement Eric Dickerson and a still-dominant, strong defense, lets say, someone like Tommy Kramer, Steve Grogan or Dave Krieg, they likely wouldve accomplished more.
At first look, Ferragamo's yardage total looks impressive (for 1980), but he was actually 15th in the NFL. His 30 td's, however, was second best and his completion percentage ninth best. I had heard that he wanted more money and the Rams wouldn't meet his request.

I believe Bob Lee should be part of this list since the Rams acquired him Dec 1979 and played against the team he came from (Vikings).
Although he played in 3 games for the Rams in '79, he didn't start any, so that is why I did not include him in this video - only starting QB's are featured.

3 of these QBs are Hall of Very Good - Gabriel, Hadl, Jaworski. I have compared Gabriel to Hadl as they are exact contemporaries- which one did you think was better? I give the slight edge to Gabriel.
Hadl had a far worse td/int ratio than Gabriel which can be attributed to his penchant for throwing deep on a regular basis. That is the only glaring difference to me, so I give the edge to Gabe.

The fact that the Rams made the playoffs so many consecutive years with such a revolving door at quarterback is absolutely amazing!.I attribute a large part of it to the defense obviously and Chuck Knox did a excellent job but the most surprising thing about that is neither George Allen or Knox got them to a Super Bowl,but Ray Malavasi did in 1979...
James Harris was great and I dont understand why we let him go but the best QB we ever had was Jim Everett. If we had gotten him in the early 70s,we would have won a Super Bowl or two that decade.

Crazy to see the goalposts in the middle of the end zone when they first switched it to the end of the end zone. That seemed weird.
Some of the goal posts were not straight either - crazy. That would never be allowed today.
6:21: That trade was probably a Win Win for both teams. Rams: Jackson had a dynamite year in 1973. 13 TDs, a Pro Bowler and finished 3rd in the MVP voting ( guess what 2,000 yard running back won it?). He was a solid 35-50 reception a year WR for the Rams from 1973-1977. The 1975 1st pick Dennis Harrah was 12 year starter and 6 time Pro Bowler at guard. The 1974 first pick was Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti who had a meh career, starting at fullback for 3 years but not worth his draft position. Eagles: Gabriel rebounded with a stellar in 1973 year with 23 TD passes and another Pro Bowl. Though he didn't back it up after that it started a renaissance that led to the hiring of Dick Vermeil in 1976 and an eventual Super Bowl 4 years later that was a God Send for the long suffering Eagles fans.
Good stuff - my 1973 first round draft video goes into detail regarding the Gabriel trade. Harold Jackson belongs in the Hall of Fame and some people think that Harrah is deserving as well.
I thought Gabriel had 33 TD's that year.

Yes, it was Romans son. Living with his mom at the time because she was divorced he was from a broken family, I was too. The thing that struck me then, as of now, he father NEVER came to one single game or practice. Everyone on our team wanted to meet his dad but he never showed up. Great role model right?

Amazing compare and contrast. I don't know what they were looking for, all would be schemed differently. The Bridesmaids 70-71 were good teams - Snow, Rentzel, Ellison and that "D". I remember the SB team, Ferragamo was seeing ghosts, the Steel Curtain put a whippin' on him. Yeah, very good teams but not enough to elevate to a title...Billy Waddy sighting a CU Buff. Everybody in sports media said Ferragamo was outpassing Bradshaw first 3 quarters and he was. The game had four lead changes Steel Curtain put a whippin on nobody. In desperation, they had to injure Wendall Tyler on purpose because he was breaking off long runs and he was hurting them badly. On a number of occasions they are are trying to rip his helmet off after the whistle and never flagged. Steel curtain had no answer to him until then. It was completely different compared to SB 13 where Steelers led start to finish and shut Dorsett down.
I agree with you on all points except regarding the one about Dorsett. I thought he ran well in the first half, but then they cut back on the amount of carries in the second half. He finished with 16 carries for 96 yards with a long run of 29 yards.
@@martinishot I don't know if the Steelers purposely tried to hurt Tyler, they played tough defense they didn't have to cheap shot anybody. They made every team pay for yardage. That was a decent SB. I have no skin in the game I admit that I'm a Bronco fan. Thanks, I value others takes.

What happened to Tyler after blown whistles I have never seen since and that says a lot considering super bowls do have a more let em play approach. I watched the handling of Tony Dorsett one year prior and its night and day.
I remember Vince started the in the playoffs because Pat got injured and was not able to play, and Rutledge was a rookie.
As a Falcons fan I remember a game where the Rams won like 58-0 and Harris, Haden, and Jaworski all threw TD's. Rams brought in Steve Bartkowski in the 80's at the end of his career with shot knees just like Broadway Joe. Life in the 70's for a Rams QB must have been a lot of fun outside of the stadium.
Yes, 59 to nothing in the second to last week of the '76 season. Bartkowski was injured and did not play in that game. The Rams also brought in Dan Pastorini in the '80's when he was shot, too. They really had a merry-go-round of QB's.
@@markgardner9460 - Surprised that they did not bring in Snake Stabler in their carousel of bad washed-up QB's. Pastorini was cracked up after his flak Jacket episodes with the Oilers. I am thinking these were all the idea's of a love-lorn Georgia Frontierre after Carrol Rosenblum.

This reminds me of my favorite team the Bears, who had a number of revolving door of quarterbacks in the 1970's and even in subsequent years. The difference between the two teams is the Rams had good quarterbacks whereas the Bears had at that position players who were not so good or mediocre at the best. 7:31

As an old man that grew up watching 1970's football, the Rams QBs, particularly once Gabriel declined, were a forgettable grab bag of retreads, has-beens, and never-weres. If the Rams had say Bert Jones, they'd have been the dynasty of the 1970s, and not Pittsburgh. The rest of the team was that good, and their quarterbacks that bad.
I agree - Jones needed a stronger defense in order to get to and compete for a Super Bowl win...and the Rams had that super strong defense that would have allowed them to get over the hump. Thank you for watching and commenting.
