@3:14…when Jack Youngblood broke his left tibia…and came back in the second half!…played the rest of this game, the NFC title game vs the Bucs, Super Bowl XIV, and even the Pro Bowl…incredible
Thank you for posting this. For me being a Rams fan since 1968, this is a watershed moment. After all the playoff frustrations from 1969 through the 70's with great teams, they were unable to defeat the Vikings or Cowboys in the big playoff games. This time they knocked off a great Cowboys team and went on to the Super Bowl. Even though they lost to the mighty Steelers, there was a great deal of satisfaction. To beat the Cowboys in Dallas and silence the crowd was a long awaited joy.
The Septien kicks before half led to the Smith TD right before the half. The last TD to Texan Billy Waddy was a great pass, but was tipped by Cowboy lineback Mike Hegman. You're right, it felt like it was destined for the Rams. As a Cowboys fan, I'll never forget Jack Youngblood playing on what they didn't know at the time was a broken leg. He wanted it. As disappointed as I was in this loss, I was more hurt when the Rams lost to Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.
Long awaited joy? You completely forgot the Rams did the exact same thing in 1976 - beating favored Dallas in Dallas 14-12 to advance to the NFC Championship. And the Rams beat the Vikings in 1978 34-10 to advance to the NFC Championship though that was an easy win. Prior to that you guys were the Vikings bitch - you lost in 1968, 1974, 1976, and 1977. By the 1978 NFC title game, the Rams were so spooked that even though they had home field advantage they wore white jerseys at home to break their jinx. That jersey BS doesn't work and they lost 28-0. The Cowboys did the same thing in Super Bowl V by wearing their blue jerseys to break their supposed jinx as if the jersey had something to do with it. They still lost. The Broncos wore white in Super Bowl 50 to break their orange jersey jinx and they did win but give me a break. It means nothing. As to this game, amazing that the Hail Mary at the end of the half was the difference. Of all the Rams teams to get to a Super Bowl it was the 9-7 one. But the Steelers were not going to lose to a 9-7 team with Ferragammo. No siree Bob.
As an Eagles fan I know how you feel. The Eagles beat the cowboys next year in Philadelphia to go to their first superbowl only to lose by the mighty Raiders.
Of ALL the Rams teams of the 1970s to make the super bowl this 9-7 version did it. They always had trouble with the Cowboys and Vikings. They gave Steelers a tough challenge and it was a great game to watch.
The 70's Rams beat the Steelers more often than not. Actually, the Rams have more victories overall against the Steelers over the course of several decades. The Cowboys only beat the 70's Steelers once in that decade.
Awesome to see this put up on the channel. I had a feeling it might show up seeing the matchup this weekend. The entire '79 playoffs AND the pro bowl saw Jack Youngblood basically play on one foot as he had a broken left fibula! This game was also the last for the great Roger Staubach.
That took more guts than anything of him! But, his team did make the Super bowl unexpectedly so the sacrifice worked out for his team and for himself. Absolute legend! (Essentially reduces John Wayne at his peak to nothing in seconds basically on that)
Remember this like it was yesterday, I grew up a huge Rams Fan and still am to this day, despite Georgia stealing them and moving them to St. Louie!! Thank God Stan brought them back home where they belong!!! . I'll admit whole heartedly I didn't think we had much chance in this game in Big D, the Cowboys were damn good, especially at home!! My boy Vince Ferragamo, despite his picks in this game, came through HUGELY to Waddy when we needed it most!! Most memorable to me in those in those days was Vin Scully on CBS calling the Play by Play like the Great Pro he always was!!!
The Rams had a good team and were hungry. The Cowboys had a good team as well but didnt play well. Staubach didnt play well. Rams won. Good win for them.
The "Cow Craps " (aka Dallas Cowboys) lower than the bull's...... wait, I mean to say, lower than the HEIFER'S dung dropped on the lowest internal soil!!!!! The "Dallas Cow Shits" are just that!!!
Saw it then saw it now great rivalry in the '70's. Cowboys beat LA twice in the Colisium in the playoffs and rams beat Cowboys twice in Dallas. Go LA rams!
I was 18 bro and watched it with my older brother, may he rest in peace. I actually made a dummy with some old baseball pants and a t-shirt that said cowboys on it. Beat the crap out of that thing after the game. Good times.
I think Starbach suffered a concussion but played through it. Did Yougblood break his leg in this game and played 16:29 on it? NFL circa 1980 was brutal compared to now
One of the great playoff games of all time…. Billy Waddy’s catch and run was truly shocking…. The Cowboys had the game in the bag and lightning struck!

Almost made the frustration of being a Rams fan for the whole of the 70s worth it. Billy Waddy is the legend of the 70s like Flipper Anderson was in the 80s. Go Rams!!
Fox started the practice of having a constant score grpahic on the screen when they got the nfc package in 1994. NBC was the last holdout, didnt adopt the practice until the early 2000's, but before they got the nfl back with the sunday night game.
Yeah, Youngblood wins the awards for the toughest and most stubborn player of all time. He had his fibula snapped in half, yet came back out to finish this game, played in the conference championship game and Super Bowl XIV, AND played in the Pro Bowl.
charles dunn: Such a sad way to go out. Over the next three seasons, the Cowboys made it to the NFCCG with Danny White under center. Unfortunately, they lost each time. I wonder if things would have been different had Staubach still been the QB.
I will NEVER forget this game!! As a Rams fan I could not have been happier to see them beat the Cowboys, in Dallas, on their first Superbowl!!! Youngblood finishing the game on a BROKEN LEG no less!
I HATE this game. I remember crying because we all knew it was probably going to be Staubach's last game. His last ever completion was to Herb Scott and was a penalty. LOL! I still cheered for the Rams when they made it to the Super Bowl though because my dislike of Pittsburgh was even greater.
I to remember that game was only 9 years old and barely getting to know football and asking my dad who to go for rams of course we where from L.A i think fans are different know going for other teams.. even if yo have a home team...i am sure clad the RAMS came back to home to L.A where they belong........
I despise Staubach so for me this is wonderful. I used to enjoy him losing to the Steelers. Though I must say that I don't despise Staubach nearly as much as I do Le Woke Claims.
This game ended the 79' campaign & proved to be the very last game for Roger Staubach, Cliff Harris & Rayfield Wright. The 3 all pros retired before the start of the very next season but neither are forgotten.
I appreciate you sharing this video. Two things stood out to me. The way they used to tackle. It looks like a car crash. Secondly, I miss Vin Scully. He's now in Dodger Valhalla with Tommy Lasorda.
I think this is the game where Jack Youngblood broke his leg but still played the whole game and the rest of the postseason. Personally, I think that crosses the line between playing through pain and just being reckless.
Jack Youngblood to reporter who asked him if he was going to play: "Does it look.like im breathing to you" Reporter: "yes" Youngblood: "alright let's play some football "
This was referee Jerry Markbreit's first playoff assignment. (He did the 1978 Pro Bowl.) When he retired in 1998, he finished with 25 postseason games including four Super Bowls. And the line judge (#4) in this game is Bob McElwee, who was later promoted to referee and ended up doing three Super Bowls.
I was in a week long coma at USC Medical Center intensive care unit. I had a bad case of Spinal Meningitis and I was fighting for my life. While out of my mind talking gibberish, I told nurses and family members the Rams had to win this game for me to survive. This is the first time seeing this game. Oh yea, I survived (obviously), thanks to the Rams?

I will never forget. Jack Youngblood breaking his leg in this game. Then playing with it broken in a shutout of the Bucks in Tampa to go to the SB. AND his leg was still broken when he played in the SB.
Was 13, on vacation in Mexico and listening to this game on an AM radio. So excited about beating the Cowboys after the embarrassing lose from the year before.
Staubach really stunk in this game and should've been benched for Danny White who was the better Qb at this point.Absolute horrendous loss by Dallas they never recovered until Jimmy Johnson became HC.
First year I watched football as a seven year old. Giants fan in Phil Simms rookie season. The 70's Giants were so bad and now they're attempting to replicate it again.
I remember this game, parts and bits seem like it was yesterday……. Cullen Bryant was clear to me like it was yesterday, Wow the offense was so vanilla, what a difference in the offenses that are today… Brought back fabulous memories for me, love the Rams since 68….. the next week the Rams went to Tampa and won 9-0 I do believe….
Danny White was the back qb who became the cowboys starter the next season, stabauch retired after this game. Danny white was the punter for a couple of seasons and qb
Me too, but in hindsight the loss isn’t as shocking. The 1979 season was chaotic for Dallas. Ed Jones retired to Box. Charlie Waters missed the entire season with a knee injury. Thomas Henderson was kicked off of the team in November. Dallas literally lost the strong side of their defense that year. The 1979 team wasn’t as strong as the ‘’77 and ‘78 squads. In fact, I think the ‘79 Cowboys and ‘79 Rams were among the weakest teams either franchise fielded in the 1970s.
Strange symmetry with the way this game ended and how the 1976 Ram upset finished. In 1976, the Rams ran out the clock on the final play by setting up to punt, then having their punter run out of the end zone to give up a harmless safety. Here they faked a FG.
I'm not sure if this is correct but my memory is telling me after the the game Roger Staubach retired in a tearful goodbye As a Green Bay Packers fan and a cowboys hater I just love this game at the time as a teenager watching it
Everyone talks about Joe Gibbs.. but after Vince Lombardi brought a perpetually moribund franchise from the grave in only one season, George Allen WAS THE ONE who started the winning culture in DC as a regular thing (pardon the irony of this comment... Because after another bad season in the 2010s, his son Bruce Allen said "we have good culture" as a lame excuse or response. Us Redskins fans tore him apart immediately online!). Anyhow, thanks George Allen.. even though I'm not Rams fan, I could not help but to think of his natural enjoyment of them finally pulling it off a decade after he left the team
I became a Ram fan because of John Capelletti's story with his brother, and this game has to be the most memorable Ram game I ever saw. I just couldn't stand the cowboys. I also liked the Oilers with Earl the Pearl and Pastorini, but the Steelers and the Cowboys were the two teams I couldn't stand.
Both these QB's came from colleges that ran the wishbone or triple option offense, in Navy and Nebraska. Where they next to never passed the ball unless they we're trailing. Navy only throws 10 passes a game now in this era! Staubach probably only attempted 100 passes his entire 4 years at navy!
Staubach suffered a concussion in this game. He hit his head on the turf on the go ahead TD throw to Saldi in the 2nd half. It didn’t knock him out, but it did affect him. Here’s a quote from him about the 1979 playoff loss from 12/11/2015 article in the NY Daily News. “It wasn’t like my normal bad concussion, but if definitely screwed me up. I wasn’t myself. So afterwards I was really thinking about retiring.” I’m sure that made throwing the football a little more difficult on that last drive 😔
Fun Fact: The Los Angeles Rams defensive end wearing #89 is Fred Dryer, who after calling a career in 1981 and a brief broadcasting stint as a color analyst for CBS, decided to take up acting and from 1984-1991 he played Sergeant Rick Hunter on the NBC TV series Hunter.
My Claim to Fame: I graduated from El Camino jr college, which is Dryer's alma mater. The administration hall displayed a trophy case, and I would always point out his picture to my classmates. He came from Lawndale high, and moved on to San Diego State.

Strange symmetry with the way this game ended and how the 1976 Ram upset finished. In 1976, the Rams ran out the clock on the final play by setting up to punt, then having their punter run out of the end zone to give up a harmless safety. Here they faked a FG.
Vince Ferragamo back at the wheel. My favorite Vin Scully line
3:07 The Jack Youngblood injury, he went on to play through that injury in the Rams’ next two games, I couldn’t do that at all
War dang eagle Auburn!
I saw this game on TV back in 1979 it was one of the happiest of my life
I'm not sure if this is correct but my memory is telling me after the the game Roger Staubach retired in a tearful goodbye As a Green Bay Packers fan and a cowboys hater I just love this game at the time as a teenager watching it
Vin Scully George Allen broadcast crew for CBS
The game has evolved so much
George Allen just couldn't get enough of himself
Roger Staubach. Top 10 quarterback of all time.
1979 leading into the greatest sports decade..the 1980s..
RIP Vin Scully.
The Cowboys, Americas Team blowing in the playoffs since the 1900s
Cullen Bryant was a stud he played defense at Colorado in college
I'm sure George Allen loved this victory by the Rams (RIP)
Note the midfield star alignment. I’ve never seen it angled opposite the television cameras like that. Was that common in the 1970s?
Youngblood playing with a broken leg!
Finally. Good Lord I Hate those freaking Cowboys.
So basically Rafael Septien shanking kicks at the end of the half cost them 7 critical points.
Ron Smith had almost as many career playoff TDs (3) as regular-season TDs (4).
Most joyous day of my 14 year old life especially since the Cowboys beat us 28-0 the previous year.
Were you on the 1978 Rams since you said " us"?
Roger Staubach was a great player, but he really stunk on that final drive.....
They don't make 'em like Youngblood anymore...
He played all the playoff games including Super Bowl and even the Pro Bowl on that broken leg that year!
Last NFL game in the 1970’s.
I remember this game well. Thought the Rams would be the world champs. Then the Steelers did their thing.
L.a beating dallas again
Can't believe how "Off-target" Staubach was in last few passes of this game.
I was thinking that he'd grown old right before our eyes. 36 back then was old and he'd taken a lot of hits.
That's right! Dryer was giving a great impression of dirty Harry in that show
He actually tried out for the role of Sam Malone on rhe TV show Cheers. Obviously he didn't get it but still made guest appearances.
My Claim to Fame: I graduated from El Camino jr college, which is Dryer's alma mater. The administration hall displayed a trophy case, and I would always point out his picture to my classmates. He came from Lawndale high, and moved on to San Diego State.
I still watch Hunter from time to time.
40 years ago, today. Staubach, Wright and Harris's last games as a Dallas Cowboy.
